Charlie Palmer's signature Progressive American cuisine first took root in the original townhouse location of Aureole, where the chef made an early commitment to farm over factory food. Today, Aureole continues to shine at One Bryant Park under the kitchen leadership of Michelin-starred Executive Chef Christopher Lee. Dining at the contemporary Aureole is staged in two venues: the formal dining room and more casual bar room. Designed with modern conviviality in mind, the smart, casual bar room offers a la carte access to many selections that share the same style and ingredients as tasting menu dishes from the Dining Room. Or, select from a list of inventive “bar snacks” for lunch and dinner, followed by indulgent desserts from pastry chef Jennifer Yee. Reservations can be made here for the Bar Room only. "THE ONLY THING I WOULD COMPLAIN IS THAT THEY HAD SEVERAL EMPTY TABLES IN THE CENTER OF THE RESTAURANT AND SINCE THEY WERE FOR THREE OR FOUR PEOPLE WE WERE SEATED ON ONE CORNER. THIS ONLY SHOWS THAT THE GIRL AT THE DOOR DOES NOT HOW TO PLEASE THE CUSTOMER. THEY EVEN HAVE A TABLE FACING A COLUMN FOR ONE PERSON, AND REALLY WHO WOULD LIKE TO GO TO AUREOLE AND HAVE DINNER FACING A COLUMN. THE REST WAS EXCELLENT, THE RESTAURANT IS REALLY NICE

"We loved Aureole; especially the food. The Bar Menu is fairly limited. The wine list was fantastic and the "wine angel" was terrific as was our waitress. I thought the ambience was a little more casual than I expected. Several young children in the Bar Room. Another time I would select the main dining room. In all, we had a lovely evening. It was certainly a terrific refuge on the rainiest evening, ever."

"For our pretheatre dinner,service was unacceptable,we were seated for 20 min and no service person appeared so I flagged down a staff person to request menus and drinks.We told our server that we had to lv in 90 min to make theatre. She gave us unenthusiastic descriptions of the selections. The tenderloin then arrived undercooked after we had been sitting@the table for 80 min and had to be returned. It reappeared 10 min later w the bill and we hurriedly ate, no time for dessert. The tuna tartar arrived with a yellow vicose blob atop and was stringy. The scallop 'sandwich' was bring and lacked flavor. The beef tenderloin was well prepared, the parsnip puree excell.The excolar had great flavors but arrived tepid.Best pt was the dramatic room."

"First time, but not the last. We were seated promptly and pampered with just the right service...not too much - just right. The waitstaff was friendly and knowledgeable and dinner was truly great.....delicately seasoned, just the right portions and presented with a flair. We went before a show, were not rushed and had a wonderful experience. The bar was active, but not noisy and the children seated next to us were also treated with respect by the staff. This fine restaurant gets it right. Worth a try and you'll come back too."

"Really enjoyed the black cod prepared wonderfully. Salad was good The dessert a favorite of our server was mediocre fruit & some sort of cream ..The service was excellent . We were there the Friday of the snow storm for a pre-theatre meal. Restaurant was half empty because of the weather. The room is a bit cold & austere ..I used to love their townhouse on the eastside. Would definitely try again when I go to the theatre."

"The $55 pre theater menu was a good value, esp this close to Times Square. Details were a little off...hard butter, pasta a little underdone (working the dente a bit much!), tenderloin a bit undercooked per order. Nice presentations. Overall, the flavors were not as strong and defined as I have come to expect from excellent NYC restaurants like Gotham and Jean Georges. But still a good deal before the show."

"Totally different than the former NY Aureole it reminds me more of Vegas and that is not necessarily a bad thing....it is vibrant, the food is fresh, and presentations are well executed. There is a vibrant feel to the place, and the food tastes good. Well worth a visit, and I definitely would go back. They made the solo diner feel like a king."

"Overall not what I expected from the legendary Aureole. The Tihany interior felt so familiar now that all NY restaurants look Tihany. The service was very attentive and friendly. The chestnut ravioli and scallop sandwich appetizers were the highlight of the meal. The main courses were less inventive and the one bold attempt at inventive- the "forbidden rice" should stay forbidden. It was rubbery and flavorless. The rest rooms are dark and coed--not at all appealing for ladies who want to see the shape the men left them in or at a minimum want to freshen their make-up. My husband and I will give it another try and sit in the formal dining room. Maybe then we will see why it has a star."

"The food was good, the service not so good:

We were left 40 minutes waiting for our table even with a reservation. No one came to serve water or bread as we sat down, and there was an additional 20 minute wait to get the menu and order. Bread and water arrived a few minutes before the first course.

Service at the peak hour was unsatisfying.

It will be unlikely that I will return to this restaurant for food."

"The critics keep carping about the space, but might want to concentrate on the food. The tuna tartar is served in beef tartar style--with various toppings to be mixed in. "I requested a banquette on open table reservation, confirmed with hostess upon arrival, was taken to a table, repeated my request taken to a 2 top a small leaf lifted for 4 people 2 of which are large.Our server arrived we stated the we had theatre tickets it was 5:00. I was seated facing the dinning room, original open table request asked for the dinning room reply came back that there here no seats available until 6:30,left a 6:45 only 7 patrons in dining room 2 separate tables. The bar room had 5 tables seated the service could not have been slower. 2 of us ordered the pre theatre selection and my husband and I stated that we DID NOT want dessert, the server brought dessert menus for all then disappeared for 20 minutes"

"Those who are used to the small intimate feeling of the old Aureole, might be a little dissapointed by the new spacious location. However, this section of Metropolis definitely needed a restaurant of this caliber! The food was outstanding, the service was sincere and attentive. The bar area had a nice vibe, and although not a fan of bench seating, I didn't feel crammed in!!! The Pork belly sliders and the scallop sandwich are worth the trip alone!! I will be back soon!"

"We eat in New York often and this is the best dinner we have had in a long time. The food was delicious and the menu had many appealing selections. I loved my "scallop sandwich" appetizer. Even the breads were amazing. The servers were terrific--they were efficient, unpretentious and fulfilled our every wish. This is a convenient spot for lunch or dinner before or after a show at the Roundabout's new Henry Miller Theater. I recommend you ask for a table in the back area, partially glass enclosed and much quieter than the main room. We will definitely go back."

"The worst service and noise level I have experienced in 20+ years in NY. My reservation was for 1:15pm and we were seated promptly. The 1st time we saw our waiter was nearly 1:45pm. The food came and my client and I jammed the food down and were ready for the check by 2:10pm. We had to beg for the check which arrived at almost 2:30pm-so we both could be late for 2:30pm meetings. I don't think either my client who is the Head of a large mid-town money manager or I will be back EVER!!!!!!!"

"The food was very good, but it was after theater and we just had burgers at that hour. It was a little odd that they charged an extra $5 for fries, but this is Charlie Palmer, after all. The room is sort of cavernous and slick, not very cozy on a cold night. I know the restaurant will be moving to the Bryant Park Hotel soon, so that observation is more or less useless. Main complaint is that the bus boy kept trying to clear plates before both of us were finished. Bad form."

"This restaurant was the highlight of our trip to NYC. We ate in the Bar Room where the food was excellent, with enough variety available to keep us interested but not so many choices to overwhelm us. The service was outstanding, from the coat-check personnel to the waitress, to the sommelier -- everyone was very attentive to our every request. The swordfish was excellent, but the duck breast was truly exceptional! The wine selection was extensive, and the atmosphere was excellent. The restaurant is located near Times Square so it was very accessible and yet the prices were such that we really felt we got our money's worth. We will definitely be back!"

"Overall, a very nice dining experience. The staff was very attentive however, a bit too much. We felt as if we were being rushed through our meal. We had 5:15pm dinner reservations and were never told we could only have the table for a specified period of time. "We arrived for post-theater dinner only to discover that all of the fish entrees were not being served for the evening. This amounted to more than half of the menu. Rather than comp us something and encourage us to stay, the staff instead just indicated that the lack of entrees would have to be good enough. I wish I could comment on whether the food actually was any good, but we were so frustrated we went elsewhere for the evening."

"We ate on Saturday, December 5 during the busy holdiay season.

Our service was excellent; the course were served in a well-timed fashion and the wat staff was attentive but not overbearing.

The wine selection was wonderful - the smallish selection of wines by the glass was very well chosen. The merry Edwards Pinot Noir is a delight.

Our appetizers - scallops and baby greens were prepared just right.

The entres was delicious - I had a perfectly cooked and presented grilled rib-eye steak with potato puree and roots (turnip etc). My wife's duck breast dinner was also well-prepared. Our only issue was the size of the duck breast plate (it was somewhat small). My steak dish was more than ample."

"Great meal! Tried to get a reservation in the dining room, but settled for the bar. I was concerned when they didn't initially offer the tasting menu, but when I asked, they happily obliged. We did the 5 course tasting menu with pairings & all courses were very flavorful & balanced (not always the case when expectations are this high). The pairings were perfect.. the wines were ok alone but when the matching food course was added, it all came to life!"

"I had eaten here once before and had a better experience. The service seemed lackluster, the bar room was pretty much empty and I couldn't help but get the sense the wait staff were counting the minutes until we left. Our drinks were not transferred from the bar until we inquired about them (We would've happily carried them over but the bartender offered to have them sent to the table.) We were not served bread until we asked.Our appetizers were delicious and perfect, but our burgers were undercooked (2 were supposed to be medium and one medium rare - they were all medium rare and not one of them was marked differently) and one had cheese when it was specifically ordered without. Our waitress was nice but it didn't make up for the rest."

"We wanted to find a top restaurant in the Times Square neighborhood for a pre-show bite to eat, and boy did we find it! The food was marvelous, the service attentive, but not overbearing, the staff couldn't have been more pleasant! It had a happening bar scene and was just perfect for a before theater "foodie" fix! I'd go back in a heartbeat!"

"Everthing wonderful. My only pet peeve is that we had too many waiters servicing our table. It was impossible to tell who was our primary waiter. One person took our drink order, another the food, and each course introduced us to yet another waiter. Finally when we were retrieving our coats, we met a second coat check person. Seems like delegating responsibilities has gotten a little out of control."

"Excellent food and service. Promptly shown to table. I had the pan roasted shrimp followed by the duck confit in the bar for lunch and both were outstanding. The house un-oaked chardonnay was reasonably priced and quite good. I will come back early and often!"
