Bar Lola - Portland
Guy and Stella Hernandez opened Bar Lola in May, 2006 on Munjoy Hill in Portland's East End. We serve a changing menu of carefully crafted dishes made from the best seasonal ingredients. We offer a five-course menu of small, medium, salad, large and sweet plates. Our small plates are just a few bites and our large plates are a bit smaller than a conventional main course. We offer a 5-course prix fixed menu every evening, as well as the Feed Me option, which is a 7-course tasting menu selected by the kitchen. You can try one, two or even all five courses - depending on your appetite and curiosity.

"Four of us enjoyed all five of our selections from the menu. My oysters on the half shell appetizer was amazing as was the fried calamari with a piquant roasted pepper and preserved lemon slices. My husband said the slow cooked lamb with roasted tomatoes on pasta was delicious. My arugula salad with fava beans and shredded beets was wonderfully flavorful. The striped bass was cooked perfectly. The panna cotta dessert had a topping with fresh citrus flavors that made it light and entirely satisfying.
The co-owner, Stella always remembers us and makes us feel welcomed and appreciated."

"We had our 27th Wedding Anniversary dinner here recently. Everything was wonderful from the complimentary Prosecco to the wonderful meal and service. We had the 7 course Feed Me chef's choice dinner. They listened to our requests and brought out 14 spectacular dishes for us to enjoy. We were amazed that we each got different dishes allowing us to taste so much of the menu along with some dishes that were not on the menu. For $44 per person we felt it was an excellent value with just the right amount of food allowing you to enjoy course 1 through course 7. We can't say enough about the service, our waiter made sure every dish met our needs and somehow hit every course perfectly based on our preferences. We'll be back!"

"Every note was on key at this restaurant. The menu and multi-course format complexity would seem impossible for the well trained and personable staff to execute without the help of magic. But performance was complete with the delivery of plate after plate of wonderfully prepared food with a nod to the healthy; neither too rich nor oversized servings."

"If you enjoy the pretentious foodie environment Bar Lola may be for you. I walked away less than impressed with the experience. The wait staff used exaggerated pronunciation in attempt to create a high class affect. The food which although above average often tried to bring to many flavors together often muddying the palate. As an example one of my courses was a fennel salad with a citrus dressing and an olive tapenade. The Grapefruit based dressing completely overwhelmed the primary flavor of Fennel leaving you just a hint of an aftertaste of Fennel and when you added the olive you ended up tasting a slightly sour(from the grapefruit) olive tapenade with a feint aftertaste of Fennel."

"I took my wife here for our anniversary and we ordered their "Feed Me" option; Seven courses chosen by the kitchen for our table.
We gave each other bites from every one of our plates and were pleased to find that I preferred the kitchens choices for me and she, hers. The presentation of each plate was beautiful and the flavor combinations were well crafted.
Our server was excellent and professional. And the interior design was cheerful and warm.
We'll definitely come here again."

"Bar Lola offers a formula few American restaurants attempt--small plate sizes of deliciously prepared local gems at the most reasonable price you will find anywhwere. The four-course prix fix menu is the price of most entrees at our local restaurants. The food is 5-star quality--exceptional. We recently celebrated a momentous family event at one of the most extravagant restraunts in Kennebunkport, and for taste and quality, Bar Lola not only matched but exceeded this restaraunt in all areas. And the bill was a small fraction of the cost. The wait staff is friendly, professional, and knowledgable. A tremendous dining experience."

"This truly was one of the most amazing dining experiences my husband & I ever had. We eat out quite often, & over the years we've had a handful of memorable favorites from all over the world. Our Lola experience was like finding a rare gem in the sea of countless nondescript shells..it was such a pleasant surprise. We did the 7 course menu & enjoyed each different tastings. It was spaced out in order for us to fully enjoy each dish. What stood out the most was actually our waitress, Alex. The most charming young lady we've ever met. Her attention to each of her tables made you feel as if you had the whole place to yourself with only her to guide you along the 2 1/2 hr experience. We were visiting from Boston, & can't wait to come here again"

"We try to go here at least twice a year. The food is wonderfully prepared and presented. Service is attentive, not intrusive. Can't comment on wine list for we always end up having Leese-Fitch Pinot Noir, a favorite. We had the prix-fixe four course dinner. All excellent. Especially noteworthy was the sea bass.
Bar Lola feels intimate, but really isn't. Seating only 28 in a small space, you will probably get to know your neighbors. This is not negative, but first timers should be aware.
We love this place."

"Our time at Bar Lola was fantastic. We were celebrating an anniversary and wanted someplace nice and romantic, but not too "fancy" in terms of dress code or atmosphere. Bar Lola has a wonderful ambiance - lovely decor, is quiet, small, intimate, but also very comfortable and friendly. We chose the seven course "Feed Me" menu with the optional wine pairing and I can't recommend it enough. Each dish is unique, but equally tasty. It's a great way to sample the chefs' skills - since we both ordered the Feed Me Menu we each got seven different dishes - 14 in all. Choosing this menu option means your meal is slower paced, so expect to spend 2 - 2.5 hours here. The wine pairing was fun, too: a good way to round out the experience."

"We don’t usually comment on our Opentable reviews but the experience at Bar Lola was so superior that we found it necessary to do so. The restaurant exudes hospitality. Our server, Alex, was present, i.e. when she was with us; her mind was not elsewhere as we so frequently find in other restaurants. We discovered this was the case with the other servers we observed. Clearly Bar Lola has great training in service.The menu is fixed price or al a carte. We both chose fixed price with different choices so that we could each taste the different offerings. All courses were excellent with a wonderful blend of seasonings and flavors. All dishes were creative, flavorful, and subtle."

"We dined at Bar Lola this past Saturday,my wife and I were celebrating our 1yr. wedding anniversary.From the start everything was perfect, our service was attentive but yet gave us the space we required to carry on conversation and enjoy our food.I put in a special note when making the reservation letting them know we were celebrating a special occasion, right after we sat down we were greeted with two glasses of champagne and well wishes! My wife was very very pleased. We opted for the 7 course Chefs tasting menu, we were restricted on time,our server checked with the Chef to make sure our schedule was met and they delivered flawlessly and we were out the door when we needed to be! Perfect food, service, and ambiance, we will be back!"

"The concept here takes some work at first in that the various menu options require concentration and group decisionmaking for ordering. But the staff is helpful and patient in guiding neophytes. The food itself is interesting, creative and varied, which makes for a fun night out. Our crowd tried the 4 dish prix fixe, together with the wine tasting option - this provided a great variety of dishes and wines, which made for a fun evening of swapping tastes within our foursome. The atmosphere was intimate but not excessively small, lively but not loud. We were there for a major birthday celebration and Lola's turned out to be a perfect spot for the occasion."

"After many attempts, I was successful in securing a reservation at this tiny restaurant. Our party of four,from the Boston, Massachusetts area, tried the "Feed Me", seven course blind tasting menu. We consider ourselves "foodie people". For each course we were served different dishes for each of us or two of the same. Being good friends, we shared each others courses so we each tasted about 15-20 possible different combinations. Each course was prepared to order, so a little wait time between courses. All combinations were amazing. Waiter was very accommodating and pleasant. The wife half of the husband/chef/wife/G.M. owners visited our table to chat about the food. Try the cocktails - yum!

"Lovely neighborhood restaurant! Small and cramped, but that goes away once you taste their food! There was not a single thing we ate that wasn't absolutely delicious! I had pork, it was tender, cooked perfectly and the flavor was to die for! My friend ordered the beef, which she rarely does, but said it was outstanding and so glad she decided on it! Our waiter was attentive and very helpful! I think my only complaint was that the descriptions of their meals were not easy to comprehend! I don't like having to ask what a meal's description means( especially when there are many of them), and this menu had lots of that. But don't let this stop you, the wait staff is well versed, the place is charming and the food, superb!"

"We had the seven-course tasting menu, and, unlike any other such menu I have experienced, each of us had a different dish for each course. We thus got to taste fourteen dishes each and a full-range of what the kitchen does. It's also an unusual tasting menu in that some of the portions are generous and none is tiny. And it's extraordinarily fairly priced.
Several of the dishes were outstanding and all were at least very good. Service was excellent after an early delay. The wine pairings were skillful, with the wines pairing well with the food but not perhaps being what one would seek out in a store. This was a terrific dining experience."

"A Wednesday night visit to this neighborhood, small but not cramped restaurant. Nice decor. Wife owner is front of the house and selects the wines that are served (excellent advice as we were making our selection). Husband is the chef. You can order a la carte or have a 4 course dinner or 7 course meal. A lot of choices for such a small restaurant. Our dinner was delicious, but I would have preferred my dishes to arrive a little warmer. The service was a little slow for us, but on the other hand we were not rushed. We would go back."

"Why don't we go here more often? As my husband and I ordered and ate our 4 courses, we planned on who we would bring back to this great restaurant. Portland has so many great places to choose from and Bar Lola is now top of mind. Service was great, food and wines were great (the crispy salmon with sauerkraut and mustard was amazing), and our evening was very nice. For such a small place with tight seating, I was expecting more noise, but it was at a level that could allow for quiet conversation between a couple. Stella and Guy do a great job of creating a wonderful spot to dine and relax with those you love."

"This restaurant was everything I expected and had heard. The bar tender invited us to the bar while we waited for our table and was genuinly excited that this was our first time at the restaurant. Our waiter, Jacques, was very knowledgable and had an in-depth understanding of the food and how it was prepared. The food was absolutely amazing and the concept of a multi course meal was something that I have been looking for. The portion sizes were just right to make it through all four courses that I had ordered. The atmosphere was warm and suited for the menu presented. At no time did we ever feel rushed, rather it seemed as if taking our time was encouraged to enjoy all of the food. Will make a point to go back to this restaurant."

"We recently dined here for a post Valentine's day celebration, and loved everything about our experience! The food was amazing, and I would highly recommend the 4 course prix fix menu. "This was a Valentine prix fixe dinner. There was not an empty seat in the house. Everything was spot on.The service was personable, attentive and professional without being overbearing. Just the right touch. Each course was paced well. The food was well portioned, creative and just delish. I'm not sure just how Guy did the oxtail entree, but it was amazing. I hope it finds its way to the regular menu on occasion. Excellent wine pairings as well. Not a clinker in the lot. And of course, despite having to deal with a reservation snafu not of Bar Lola's making, Stella was poised, smiling, warm and welcoming as always. Thank you for a wonderful Valentine's Day dinner!"
