The Lake Chalet Seafood Bar & Grill
The Lake Chalet Seafood Bar & Grill is an Oakland Restaurant located on beautiful Lake Merritt and offers indoor and outdoor dining over the water. We serve a diverse menu of contemporary Californian food with a focus on seafood that's full of new takes on old favorites.
Several dining areas make up our restaurant and offer something for everyone. The Pumphouse is a casual indoor setting that offers our entire menu; the Pumphouse Bar is an 80-foot-long marble-topped bar that looks out of huge windows onto the Lake; the Lake Room juts out over the Lake and offers a more traditional dining experience; the Dock offers outdoor seating on the Lake with bar service and a limited menu; and the Gondola Room will host private events.
Reservations are not accepted for the Pumphouse Bar or the Dock's outdoor seating. Seating in those areas is first-come, first-serve.

"Food was apparently prepared from frozen ingredients. Fish was really bad. Dessert was worse. No immigination in the kitchen. The restaurant has a fantastic location; scenic views, and indoor and outdoor seating, but everytime we go there we get more disappointed with the food."

"This isn't the first time we've dined at Lake Chalet, so we knew it would be good. It took a while after we were seated for our server to come to our table. It had been close to 20 minutes before we even ordered drinks. Maybe it was busy, after all, it was Mother's Day. So we ordered our drinks and food, and it came relatively quickly. The kids' menu was really convenient, because our son has recently started eating solids, and we ordered him fresh fruit and mashed potatoes. Everything tasted great, and we hope to return soon."

"Our night at the Lake Chalet kept going so wrong, it got funny! First, out table was delayed because they decided to accommodate people who unexpectedly doubled their party (shouldn't our accurate reservation count for something?) They tried to put us in the room without the view, but we insisted and got a table in the main dining room. It took so long to get our order taken and our food, that by the time we were finally eating we'd been there for almost an hour and a half! The food is uneven, but the view and the decor cannot be beat."

"This was our second time at the Lake Chalet. We were somewhat disappointed the first time and even more so on this trip. The place may be OK for drinks and snacks outside but we were seated in one of the dining areas. It should have been wonderful but it was rather depressing. The waitress was nice though not very attentive. There was no music so despite the view the atmosphere was somehow dull and lifeless. The cocktails were good but the food was not, especially for the prices. My wife's halibut was the most tasteless dish either of us has had in years and my steak was tough and excessively charred. Worst was we sat for almost an hour between our appetizer and our entrees. Way too much money for bad service and mediocre food."

"Wonderful lake front restaurant. Was very surprised to find such a high quality location in downtown Oakland. The area has lots of potential. The bartenders could use some help being more attentive. Even when not terribly busy, the bartenders appear to be often distracted."

"I love taking visitors to Oakland here. Lovely views of Lake Merritt, warm and friendly service and excellent food. I've taken my tween kids here for Christmas Eve dinner and been here many times for a fun night out with friends. Most recently came with two friends. We ordered the Boathouse punch on our server's recommendation but they ran out so we got Old Cubans, which were great. They comped us a drink because they ran out of punch. We got Kumumoto oysters, Ahi Tuna Poke, Seafood Linguini, Tonno Panzanella salad-all excellent."

"I have been to Lake Chalet a number of times - meeting friends for a cocktail to overlook the lake. I've been for business lunches and have been satisfied considering what one must expect for business lunches. This time I was meeting colleagues for lunch and made a reservation and I arrived a little early. The 2 receptionists at the front seemed too busy with detail - perhaps expecting a large lunch crowd but I could not see that the restaurant was not even half full - they would not seat me at my table until the designated time. When I was seated I could see there were not that many people in the restaurant. This did not set a good tone for the experience but we did have good table service."

"I made reservations because we had guests from Detroit visiting. I requested a table by the window, and were seated at a beautiful table with a view. Our guests were late, and the waiter was very accomodating and did not rush us at all. It was a great evening for six and we enjoyed the food as well!!! No one was disappointed. The appetizer ribs were excellent. I had salmon, which was scrumptious. Highly recommend."

"Sitting outside on the back pier at the Lake Chalet Seafood Bar & Grill has got to be one of the best places to sit in Oakland. How quickly one forgets one is in the city. The food here for brunch is delicious. Marissa, our waitress, was high energy and very nice. I recommend the sweet potato fries and the wild mushroom and goat cheese omelette. A friend had the bananas foster French toast and while she enjoyed the flavor she said the middle of the thick slices of toast were a little gummy so if this is your desire, maybe ask for it well done. Good coffee too."

"First trip to the Lake Chalet, and we will be back. the food was outstanding, with some interesting items on the menu (the deviled egg appetizer with caviar was great). service was very attentive. beautiful building, and outdoor seating on the dock looked to be a nice treat. its a little pricey, but, the quality of the food and service made it appropriate. we will be back. for those wanting to test things, they have a great happy hour with their starters at half-price!"

"The food here has really slipped. This leaves the servers in an awkward position of starting off the meal by telling us what they do not have. Not a good way to start the meal. I work in the area and have eaten here many times. About four meals (or months?) ago, they switched chefs. I immediately saw the quality of the ingredients go down. For example, the calamari and mussel starter soon had less seafood in it. The presentation went from a delightful mix of seafood and thinly sliced fried lemons to undercooked mush with lemon chunks.
The seafood pasta went from large mussels and shrimps to small shrimps. Someone is cutting costs and this is being noticed by the patrons as the restaurant is not as full as it used to be."

"We had a decent time, but when the server brought as the check we found some inconsistency with what the restaurant says on the website.
We were a party of four people, and the server charged a 20% tip right away without letting us write the tip we thought was fair. I have been a server myself and typically an automatic 20% tip charge is added for parties of 5 or more. At that moment, we turned a little sour. No because we didn't want to pay a 20% tip, but because we thought it was fishy and dishonest. We are not sure if it was on her part or on the restaurant part.
Sadly because of that incident, we won't be rushing back"

"The food was good and the prices are raised because of the location and view. The food did come out extremely fast, which if you've worked in the food industry, that can be a scary thing. Everything went well and the food was cook correctly. There server seemed overly concerned with everything which made it a little awkward, but it was overall a great time."

"Good view of the lake but disappointing dinner. We went early on their special prime rib night, was told by the waiter we good get the prime rib as rare as we wanted it, ordered it rare and it arrived brown and medium. We sent it back and was told that's how it comes. Not sure whether they left for too long under a heater, but it sure looked unattractive. We ordered other dishes which were ok, but since we we came for the prime rib, our experience at The Lake Chalet was not a good one."

"The Lake Chalet is a really nice looking eatery located on the west shore of Lake Merritt in Oakland. That's pretty much where to the good news ends.
While we found the servers to be reasonably attentive and energetic, coffee was not refilled promptly, and one order was simply incorrect. I will note that the restaurant comped the corrected version, which, of course, arrived after all other diners were long finished. It appeared that the order for the corrected version was filled at as a regular order at the bottom of the list. And, by the way, the incorrect order involved a hamburger, which one might guess is hard to get wrong!!
Maybe they will get the food and service to match the ambiance in the future."

"Not all bad. The kids really enjoyed their mini burgers. But the cole slaw that came with my husband's brunch was completely devoid of flavor. It looks like it has a dressing on it. But it taste like someone forgot to season it. It did not even taste like cabbage...just nothingness in the mouth. My pouched eggs with hollandaise sauce were ok. The dungeness crab cakes that came with them were dry. The waitress did ask how our meal was. But that wasn't till the very end after the offending food items had been taken away. We won't be coming back for Easter brunch."

"The food is NOT anything to rave about, and the service was lack luster. We had made a reservation and waited fifteen minutes to be seated while staring at twelve open tables while the hostess fumbled with an awkward introduction, as well as not greeting us upon entering the restaurant ; had a lack of politeness, an apology for waiting for a table with a RESERVATION? On a Tuesday night mind you.
Besides the multimillion dollar remodel, the excellent location and view, a great wine list this restaurant is plainly O.K. The food is seriously lacking in any great flavor, flare or even warmth when coming out of the kitchen. A waiter even spilled all three of his dishes bringing them to the table. Time to work on the host/wait staff and FOOD!"
