Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"My husband and I had talked for a long time about going to Slocum House, but had never gone. I needed a special place to take him for his birthday dinner. It is our custom to find a special NEW place to take each other for their birthday. I decided to take him to take him here. WOW! What an absolutely fantastic evening!! We would give this 10 stars for food, service, and intimate quiet atmoshpere! We have dined all over the SF Bay Area and Slocum House ranks with the best. We are already planning return trips and want try brunch as well. We live in Davis and it is an easy drive and well worth it!"

Review 5 for Slocum House

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"We've been repeat customers and have been coming to this restaurant for a number of years. I did notice a change in their menu prices (a considerable increase). I'm not sure if we will return--I love the ambiance, but for the price??? I think in today's marketplace it's getting a bit pricier than we feel comfortable spending . . ."

Review 7 for Slocum House

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"I used to work in the Bay Area restaurant scene at places like Aqua, Jardiniere, and Stars. Maybe my expectations were a little high but, with the price point and (undeserved) reputation of the Slocum House I would expect the little things to be taken care of. My wife and I went for dinner on Saturday for Valentines and even though they were doing a prix-fixe menu (which restaurants normally don't execute as well as their regular menu and sometimes can create problems with things like silver and glassware) the service was abysmal. The food was passable. Food reminded me of decent hotel restaurant."

Review 8 for Slocum House

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"This is truly an amazing restaurant. The food from the Beef Tartar appetizer to the Pancetta wrapped Pork Tenderloin to the Flourless Chocolate Cake for dessert was impressive. The wine list is bery comprehensive with a good mix of French and California wines. The service was very good. They knew exactly when to check on us and exactly when to leave us alone! Overall, I had an wonderful time and I recommend it to all."

Review 13 for Slocum House

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"Our Valentine's Day dinner-for-two was a surprise in more ways than one. The total cost for our choice of the filet mignon, one bottle of wine, tax and tip, was $240.00.
But high price aside, it was a most pleasant evening. The room was quiet enough that we could talk without having to shout (unlike TGI Friday's for instance) but not so quiet that we were able to overhear neighboring tables, and the service was timely and attentive without being intrusive. The food was good, but I've had better elsewhere for much less money. Still, it was an enjoyable event.

Review 14 for Slocum House

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"This was my first visit to Slocum House. It was Valentine's week-end so a 5 course meal was offered for $85.00 per person. My husband and I also ordered one bottle of wine to share. Service was great (although I think there was an employee for every one of the twenty people dining there at the 6:30 - 7:30pm dinner hour) but the restaurant itself is claustrophobic. We each had the filet mignon and it was fine, but for a $275.00 meal, I think we could of had a wonderful meal at say Ruth's Chris for less."

"It was a set menu for Valentine's day which was fine and the food was very good. However, the set price per person was overly expensive (and we usually have very nice dinners). Service was too good (very fast probably due to the need to turn tables)."

Review 17 for Slocum House

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"We made a reservation for Saturday night based on the information provided on your web site. Your web site indicated the prices were approximately $30.00 and under per person. The actual price per person was $85.00 per person! That was a huge difference in price and it would have been nice to know this ahead of time!!!! Dinner for two came to a staggering $250.00 total including one glass of wine each and gratuity! That was not worth the cost!"

Review 18 for Slocum House

Overall Rating 1.0 out of 5 (Poor)
"We had been to Slocum House years ago and were excited to try it again after it received a great review in our local newspaper. It was awful. I made the reservations weeks before and called ahead for a rose to be on the table for my wife. It was there, they knew I wanted it special, but they sat us in their bar..not loud from people but from the blender going all the time. My wife's drink came really late, I was never asked it I wanted more wine, mine was gone befor the meal Salad was awful, soggy lettuce. They did not give me what I ordered, it was the wrong steak. My wife got sea bass and it was cut in little pieces and battered in a awful batter with not taste. It was awful...we will let all our friends know how bad."

Review 19 for Slocum House

Overall Rating 1.0 out of 5 (Poor)
"We arrived on time for our reservations, (made about one week previous) suitably attired, and looking forward to a nice evening. We were shown to a tiny bar table in the middle of the bar area which was quite noisy. It was obvious due to the busy weekend this area was being used as additional dining space. We politely asked to be seated in the regular dining area. After about 10 minutes the waiter returned indicating no other tables were available. No alternative was offered. After waiting about 10 minutes for the manager, we voiced our displeasure (again politely) to the hostess and left. She said they were overbooked and apologized. Pretty brazen and amazing lack of customer service for an establishment of this caliber!"

"Our waiter was wonderful. Our appetizer and cocktails were yummy. It took almost 30 minutes for our entrees to arrive, way too long!
We ordered our steaks medium and they were rare, so it all started off well, but ended not so well. I don't think I will return.

Review 24 for Slocum House

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"My husband & I were really looking forward to a good meal because we heard there was a new cook and the food was very good. I ordered the Chilean Sea Bass with a tapioca crust. There was very little fish under the thick tasteless crust and the fish was over cooked and dry. The rice was dry. The veggies were good. My husbands fillet was not bad but lacked flavor. It was bla. The rhubarb/strawberry shortcake was small and unimpressive."

Review 25 for Slocum House

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"I would recommend Slocum House for an above average dinning experience. The noise level was quiet except for one exceptionally vocal four person party in our area. Our food order was delayed by a mix-up in the kitchen but, management was considerate and professional enough to offer complimentary desserts to my wife and I because of the delay. We will go back and also, recommend Slocum house to our friends."

Review 26 for Slocum House

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"There was a delay with our table so we waited in the bar. Then, the table was in a tight little corner but they offered us the option of eating at a table in the bar which is what the four of us chose. We wanted a bottle of wine and thought we had ordered a full bottle as it was $28 but it turned out to be a half bottle. The pastries were nice but you are only offered them one time so if you want one with your brunch you are out of luck. The main entrees were quite tasty. The biggest change I would make would be moving the tables so diners can have a conversation without yelling. Even in the bar area, they seated another group of four at the very next table and they were very boisterous. It was impossible to talk."

Review 27 for Slocum House

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"Service was poor. The kitchen 'forgot' my crab meat on my crab cakes. The waiter said he would check on why no crab on the crab cake, but he never got back to me. The kitchen also 'forgot' the bacon for my friend's waffle(it was her birthday). so two table-mates had to give up our bacon for her.

I called the manager to complain, who sent me a gift card to make up for the poor service. When I called back to thank the manager and to ask the amount of the gift card, I was told that she no longer worked there. Obviously the old Slocum House isn't what it used to be!

"THis restaraunt always has excellent food and a romantic feel to it. It has the feel of a fine dining establishment yet is is made out of an older home in an older neighborhood that gives it a very nice feeling of being at home.

We highly recommend this place for any speacial occassion. We have been going for 18 years for our anniversary.

Review 30 for Slocum House

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"What a disappointment! I went expecting a 4-star meal only to find high prices and average food. A new chef had just joined the restaurant a month ago, but the website still points to its recent 4-star review with the former (and short-lived) chef. While the food was good, it was not very special. We had reservations for 7:30 and planned a leisurely meal; the restaurant was empty by 9 and the waitstaff appeared eager to leave, so we did not linger. How unfortunate."

Review 33 for Slocum House

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"It was a special date night the night we chose to go to Slocum House. We had known it to be a special occasion restaurant, and I had been told it was over-priced and food mediocre. I was hoping to combat that thought. The night began as we were tucked in to a corner. This wasn't a big deal, but it would have been nice to be in the open room with the fireplace. It wasn't really a big deal though. My lamb was excellent - one side (the shank) but the lollipops were ridiculously under cooked. I waited and waited for our server to come around and ask me how my meal was so I could inform her, but she never arrived (she did not bring the food out). I finally had to track down the buser to grab my waitress. I expected more all the way around."

Review 35 for Slocum House

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"The menu was extremely limited and not what we remembered of the Slocum House. We were surprised to see no filet on the menu only rib eye. The quality of the Ahi was very good but it did not have much clavor and the mango slasa was hard to find on the plate. The texture of the chicken was not that good. Chicken was selected only because there wasn't a desirable meat choice."

Review 36 for Slocum House

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"We were NOT seated at a table near the fireplace as I requested although that room was not busy.

The scallop dish was delicious but the portion skimpy--a third scallop would have been perfect.

The butternut squash soup was tasteless. I make a better one at home.

Review 37 for Slocum House

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"The food was expertly prepared and imaginative, but well short of crossing into wackiness. Slocum House lived up to their excellent reputation again tonight. The lamb with a Moroccan spice rub was the best I've ever had. My wife's short ribs were just as good. Our server (Brandon) had a perfect feel for a diner's rhythm, so he was always helpful, but never intrusive. He was so good that the floor manager's frequent stops asking if everything was alright were a bit of bothersome overkill. The only other tiny quibble is lighting and decor that, while adequate, are best described as beige. Still, the food and service assure our return very soon."

Review 40 for Slocum House

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"Alittle disappointing from past times at the Slocum House. My husband and I were put in a funny little area-room enough for 3 tables for two. I think they used picnic like tables and chairs-chairs were uncomfortable. My drink order was wrong but OK-didn't want to make a fuss. Dinner was delicious. We asked to take dessert home. They were out of my first choice and then put the wrong second choice in the box. Very disappointed later in the evening. We were secluded from Christmas decor-they could have at least put a wreathe in the room."

Review 43 for Slocum House

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"I enjoyed the delicious salad and my friend and I had a very lovely time, however, I was not offered a refill on my soda nor was there any more bread offered. Based on my experience at other restaurants, the waitress/waiters always refill automatically and offers more bread. Otherwise it was a good experience."

Review 44 for Slocum House

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"It was fabulous. Everything was exceptional. It turned out to be a very memorable Christmas Dinner
for me and my family.

The only criticism I have is that I was not properly informed that (1) The menu was pre-set; (2) Each person
was going to be charged $65.00; and (3) the tip was already figured into the total tab. These are things
that should be disclosed when you are making the reservation. Thank God I have the funds to pay for
such an elaborate dinner for 7 people (it was my treat). I'm glad I didn't call a Dutch treat because none
of my party could have afforded their dinner.

In the end, the experience compensated me for the surprise of the cost and I would do it again in a heart beat.

Review 45 for Slocum House

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"My husband and I ventured to Slocum House for a quiet Christmas dinner. We have been there before--several times, but never on a holiday and not recently since they apparently have changed ownership. I was hoping things would be the same--same great service--same good food--same intimate atmosphere . . .and it was and even better. When I had submitted my reservation request through Open Table, I had asked for a table in a room off to the side and that was exactly what we got. I thank the staff at the Slocum House for making our Christmas Dinner the one highlight of a miserable Christmas season (I'm currently undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer)."

Review 46 for Slocum House

Overall Rating 1.0 out of 5 (Poor)
"We have been going to Slocum House for over 23 years for Christmas Eve, and other occasions. The new chef is mediocre at best...there were no specials, and the macaroni and cheese with the steak dinner was no better than a school cafeteria. Our service was negligent. Waited for water (had to ask) ... no bread for the longest time. Never asked us if we wanted wine. The new owner, management and chef had better "beef" it up, or we will never go back. And we are neighbors of the restaurant. So disappointed."

Review 47 for Slocum House

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"Looking a bit out-of-date, but comfortable. The food is not of the highest quality (salad had lots of yellow/brown leaves hidden at the bottom, mushroom panini was dry/overcooked) but the experience was pleasant enough. Server made a few errors (only asked the male at the table if he wanted coffee, ignoring the two women) but was mostly respectful. It's a nice place that deserves to be supported in this out of the way neighborhood."

Review 49 for Slocum House

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"A bit dated with respect to the decor, but the service was excellent, and the food was very good. The restaurant seemed past it's prime or heyday.
We asked for a table away from the kitchen door and with a window view. Instead, we were seated in a tight booth next to the kitchen door.
We also sat near a large family with a well behaved toddler, but had an enjoyable evening.
The superior food and service outweighed the ambiance distractions.

Review 52 for Slocum House

Overall Rating 1.0 out of 5 (Poor)
"Food was underwhelming, my pork had so much five spice on it that you couldn't taste anything else, the sides were the same old mashed potatoes for both the appetizer of sweetbreads and the pork, only a few lonely green beans as a vegi. The lamb my companion had was cooked well but hardly had any flavor. The desert, the chocolate Aztec was fine. Bread was only served once, the table was crammed up against the wall in a corner, you couldn't move because there was another table right up next to it. Not a good experience. Wait staff nice but not all that pro active."

Review 54 for Slocum House

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Overall, it was a good experience. It had been many years since my first experience at the Slocum House and I guess I had higher expectations. I found the food to be good but not Oustanding as I had expected. To be highly rated as a place to have a romantic dinner, it didn't meet my expectations. My wife and I were placed at a small table in a small room (w/ 5 other small tables) at the back of the restaurant. It felt very confined and there was no privacy. The service was outstanding but that's probably not enough for me to return for another dining experience."

Review 55 for Slocum House

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"I took my grown children to Slocum House for a pre-Thanksgiving brunch as we can't be together later. We had a lovely table near the window.

The food was disappointing in two regards: The buffet before the entree had very little that was special or enticing. The pastries tasted dry and the fruit not ripe. All four of our entrees were luke warm and tasted just OK. After reading out the great new chef, I was really disappointed.

Review 56 for Slocum House

Overall Rating 1.0 out of 5 (Poor)
"We had a privilege of dining at Slocum House before the new chef arrived.

Unfortunately, the new chef Gabriel Glasier gets major thumbs down.

His compositions are discombobulated or downright clashing. To top things off, everything but desert has bacon in it. How distastefully French.

If they re-hire the previous chef, we will go back. Otherwise "Adieu, Slocum House".

Will miss the ambiance but not the food!
