Franco Reviews List
Franco
Franco offers classic, rustic French cuisine. We utilize only the best and freshest ingredients and support our local farmers as much as possible. Located in historic Soulard we are 20 feet away from the Soulard Farmers Market, the oldest market west of the Mississippi. Everyday our chef walks the market and changes the menu to incorporate the inspirational seasonal bounty he finds. Some of our favorites are Braised Lamb Shank, Steak Frites and Steamed Mussels. At lunch, don't miss the Coq au Vin.
Franco opened in late 2006 and received the honor of being named St. Louis Best New Restaurant by Sauce Magazine, The Riverfront Times, Alive Magazine and St. Louis Magazine.
The interior of the restaurant received an AIA design award. It is beautiful and elegant while staying approachable and inviting.
Franco has several different seating options with a private dining room, bar, patio and private event space.

"The food was delicious and served in an appropriate manner! The service was excellent! We ate early and the restaurant was not as busy as later. Sound can be a problem for those who have hearing issues! However, because of our early arrival we had no problem and the evening was delightful. The dessert Beignets are to die for!"

"My girlfriend and I went on a date to Franco cause we live in the neighbourhood and have never been there. The best part was that our server (who was great) made up our minds for us, because we are both indecisive but also 'go with the flow'. Like this:
me: "I want a red wine, but I'm not sure which one."
her: "Okay, be right back."

"We had an 8pm reservation, arrived early at 7. He said 20-30 min. Sat at window table in bar. 15 min before we even got a drink. Once we got our drink, we were never attended to again. It was finally at 8 when we were seated. There were empty tables, we were wondering what the problem was, guess they were short staffed? Food: I ordered the escargot, one of my favorite foods, they were okay, and very different- served out of the shell in a bowl of cream sauce, without the traditional garlic flavor, with slices of sausage?-wouldn't recommend this. I ordered the trout, it was really great! The other meal was the steak, it was good and the french fries were great. Didn't have dessert, wanted to go elsewhere. Our waitress was just ok."

"We liked the industrial feel of Franko and the staff were all very friendly, but we weren't wowed by the food. The best dish at the table was some sort of fish stew which was outstanding. Two of us ordered the trout which could have fed four - it tasted good, but the champagne chicken wasn't well-liked, a combination of richness and bones.
I wonder if we had an off-night or ordered wrong because there are so many glowing reviews and the fish stew was a taste of wonderful potential. I would give Franco another try."

"It's rare when all the food is perfect, the staff in friendly and I leave a good restaurant feeling I really received value for the cost. All of that was true at Franco's. the food was over the top good and the only negative, and small compared with all that was good, was that service was a little slow at first, but they were busy. A huge positive was that when the AC was blowing on our table and I asked our waitress if she could turn it down, she simply said no problem and did it, instead of looking at me like I was crazy or promising to turn it down and have nothing happen."

"My friend just returned from France and was still craving French food, so we went to Franco. Delicious all-around! We just got a little bit of several things and shared. Scallops and escargot were our first choices. Both were delicious, but the escargot and it's cream sauce really stood out! We went through two servings of bread as we mopped up every drop of that sauce! Brussel sprouts with bacon was our next choice, then onto the pork belly app. Sprouts were delicious (esp. with bacon!), but we were slightly underwhelmed with the pork belly. In my opinion, it was just a matter of preference. The visual of the columns of pork separated into fat and some meat was just visually unappealing. Apple tart desert was awesome finish!"

"I have been to Franco many times. This visit was the second time that the bar was clearly understaffed. We sat at our table for 35 minutes after ordering drinks before they arrived. But the food, as always, was quite good. I had the the most delicious lamb shank I have ever had. If they could improve the bar service, this restaurant would get 5 stars from me."

"The food was absolutely amazing I finished my fish and then moved on to finish what my sister left on her plate. It was my birthday dinner and I wanted to find somewhere that would be just perfect and this was an amazing find. I'm taking everyone I can back to visit. The dining room was open and the lighting made it intimate while the live music made it just the right feeling. I could've sat there for hours ordering more and more. Oh and my whole group decided that the bread was the best we have ever had, everything was perfect."

"Since it opened, Franco has been my go-to place for celebrations, dates, special events, a night-cap, dinner, drinks, small plate at the bar. Franco consistently out-performs other St. Louis restaurants for food quality and selection; friendly and attentive staff; and just being a relaxed, fun place to be. "Housed in the former Welsh Baby Carriage Factory, the high-ceilinged Franco has an open, welcoming loft space feel to it. The food is inventive and delicious, with both small plate and entrée options. There are plenty of seafood and meaty choices on the menu, and everything our party of four ordered was perfectly prepared. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable; our server was able to recommend wine pairings for our selections. We were visiting from Chicago and will definitely return on our next visit. Our St. Louis hosts plan to add Franco to their regular rotation."

"I've been going to Franco for the past three years, and they consistently impress. The food is inventive and of high quality, and the servers seem genuinely friendly and are attentive without hovering. The flavor combinations the kitchen presents you with are spot-on: trout, shiitake, and hazelnut or corn-ginger beignets, on this last trip. Also, I have never felt rushed - there has never been a sense that they were over-eager to turn tables. I'm a big fan."

"My husband and I went to Franco's for our anniversary dinner. First time there and we thought food was very good and our waiter was excellent. We had escargot for app and those where delicious. They brought warm bread and warm butter which was also good. For dinner he had the french onion soup which he said was good but said his mom makes better and I had caesar salad which was satisfying but I was surprised it wasn't better. For dinner I had the rainbow trout very flavorful. He had the rib eye which was cooked well. Accompanied with the steak was fries and brussel sprouts. We both agreed that entree would have been better enjoyed with more appetizing sides. We had three drinks on our bill and dessert & spent little over $100. Will go again"

"Located next to the Soulard Farmers Market near the Lafayette Square and Benton Park neighborhoods south of downtown St. Louis, this is a consistently great restaurant. We have been dining at Francos since 2008. The interior walls are bare brick from what was originally a manufacturing or warehouse building. The chef uses as many locally available ingredients as possible. Recently,one of us had Missouri Trout and the other a silkie snapper with roasted brussel sprouts. The food is very fresh and cooked to the right crisy tender for the vegetables and crisp exterior on the very fresh fish but moist and succulent inside. There is a good selection of different wine varietals by the glass. The salted caramel ice cream was delicious."

"Franco is always reliable for great food, service, and atmosphere. We were seated promptly and welcomed by the entire staff. Our server was very knowledgable about the on and off menu items. We had the flounder and rainbow trout--both superbly prepared. A mushroom medley was scrumptious!"

"Very impressed. The white anchovies are terrific. My wife loved her trout, and the Coq Audi Biere (a variation of Coq Audi Vin), my beer-braised chicken with vegetable, was earthy and satisfying. The wine and drink lists are broad, well chosen, and fairly priced. Service was attentive. We will definitely be back."

"My cousin and I found Franco through the NY Times travel guide. We are pretty big food snobs and thoroughly enjoy a great, tasty meal! We found an even better option than expected with Franco. Though I thought the menu was a bit pricey, that's only because I assumed the portion sizes would be small (like any typical high-end restaurant.) BUT The portions were actually size perfectly to the price. Every single thing anyone in our party order was simply delicious. I will definitely go back! One of the best parts about Franco is the local, organic, seasonal characteristics to the menu. I always appreciate a menu that takes advantage of local products."

"This was my fourth trip to Franco and it was not as good as I remembered it. There were no specials on a Saturday night which surprised me. The menu seemed smaller and more limited than on previous trips. My food was good although not outstanding. I had two appetizers, the escargot and scallops. They were both tasty just not stellar. My husband had the duck cassoulet and was similarly unimpressed. The duck wasn't particularly flavorful although the Great Northern Beans in the dish were wonderful. The Apple Tart Tatin for dessert was lovely.

"The food was average and for the money that is not good enough. The sausages in the cassoulet were tasteless and the beans were nothing special, however the duck was very good. Our table was 30 minutes late and the service was slow or inattentive. I would not spend the money to go there again."

"Went here for a Valentine's Day date and set up the reservation for 7pm. The location looked like the entrance to a urban loft complex and was right across the street from the local Farmer's Market, which I heard was where they get many of their fresh ingredients. Once we arrived it was quite a wait, even with the reservation we weren't seated until nearly 25 minutes after. So, not too impressed with Franco thus far I was still willing to give it a chance. We ordered the Pan-Seared Dorade and oh my great salivating taste-buds it was incredible! The skin side of the fish was perfectly crisped and the seasonings were spot on! The sauce and everything else about it was amazing and I crave the dish still to this day!"
