Kula Ranch Island Steakhouse
Restaurant Description: Kula Ranch Island Steakhouse (in the former AJ Spurs Location) is located at the Sanctuary Beach Resort, next to the Marina State Beach, just off Highway One at Reservation Road.
As you drive up the brick-paved entry of the Resort, and circle around to the palmtree lined entry to Kula Ranch, you will begin to feel the Hawaiian Paniolo feeling of the Islands.
The beautifully remodeled Kula Ranch, brainchild of popular local restaurateur Joe Loeffler (former General Manager of Baja Cantina)features a soothing Island feel, mixed with a little up-Country Western Maui!
Executive Chef Darroll Rose (formerly of Fresh Cream Restaurant) has developed an enticing menu of Pacific Rim inspired fresh seafood, steaks, prime rib, exciting Sushi Bar creations, exotic salads and fabulous appetizers and desserts.

"Vastly overrated. If you want a nice evening with your wife or date, go somewhere else.
The server did not know the difference between Sashimi and sushi and the sushi chef was not much better... serving Unagi cold with all the skin still on it and dripping the fat was gross, and when we complained, the server could not have cared less.
Having a school prom party with a 100 screaming kids, very loud music and a DJ about 10-20 feet away from a dozen tables with the door left wide open by the staff and manager over half the time was awful.
Spent $150 for the two of us and the only thing I can say positive about this place is that it is convenient if you're staying at Sanctuary Beach Resort."

"We stayed at the Sanctuary and did not want to drive 7 miles for dinner. We read the reviews showcasing the service issues and decided that we would try the restaurant because it was convenient. We had a good experience and the food was very good. We decided to stay at the bar and not be seated in the restaurant. We had very attentive service and it was an enjoyable experience. We had a minor hiccup when I looked at my email and saw the restaurant had cancelled our opentable reservation. We contacted open table and the problem was promptly taken care of by OpenTable."

"My wife had a great meal at Kula Ranch. We had a reservation and had our table within two minutes of arrival. The waiter was very attentive and took are drink orders right away. The appetizers were awesome. The downside of the evening was a bit of wait for the main course. I had the prime rib & my wife had the swordfish. Both dishes were outstanding. We will be coming back again. Thank you Kula Ranch Island Steakhouse for a wonderful meal a great time."

"When we arrived there was no hostess and we had to wait 10 minutes to be acknowledged. We were never offered the highchair that we requested when we made the reservation. A lot of the buffet food was overcooked and bland. The pastries and desserts were store bought. Two hours after they opened they ran out of cheesecake and the only dessert left was Boston Creme pie and a chocolate cake. The chocolate cake was just a cube of cake, no frosting, no sauce or anything, just a dry piece of store bought cake. The waitress hardly ever showed up at our table never offered me a refill for my coffee, I had to ask. Keep in mind she didn't serve us food. Even though there were only three of us, including one toddler we were charged 18% gratuity."

"Kula Ranch is convenient if you are staying at the Sanctuary (which we were) or Wyndham time shares. However, that is the only positive attribute I can think of regarding our recent dinner there on a Saturday night. While other diners have had a problem with spotty service, our main issue was the food, which was bland and poorly plated and presented. The Kalua pork was one of the most tasteless pork dishes I have ever had. My son's Mac and cheese came in a white runny soup that resembled and tasted like light cream or half-n-half. My wife's dinner, Mahi Mahi in a curry sauce, was borderline tasty. The portions as huge, which given the obesity and diabetes epidemic in the U.S., is NOT a plus. Consider dining in Monterey!"

"Service was very poor the minute we walked in the door. We were ignored by the hostess for about 5 minutes standing right in front of her. Then our waiter treated us like we were bothering him by being there especially after searing a party if 8 that received all of the servers attention. Our food took a long time and I figured it was ready way before it got to us because it came out cold. Then we had to flag our waiter down to ask for a dessert menu because it was my husbands birthday and he wanted cake. Then when we left not one person said a word when we walked out the door. I will never return despite the quality of food and I'm disappointed I chose this place for a special occasion."

"I had been waiting to try this restaurant since it changed from being AJ Spurs. What a let down. I love Hawaiian fusion but the service needs to step their game up. I don't know if our server was just new or simply more focused on her larger table. She tried to talk me out of the kalua pork which she described as "plain", I had to inform her that I knew exactly what I was ordering. When she gave us our iced teas there was no lemon, so we had to ask for that and when we ran low she said she said she'd bring the pitcher back with her. Simple things that could have been avoided with proper training. As a Guest Experience Supervisor at a five star Resort, I know I'm picky. But... simple service is not that hard to find."

"My husband and I were staying at The Sanctuary Resort for his birthday and it seemed like the most logical place to have his birthday dinner. I wasn't feeling very well but my husband had swordfish and enjoyed it. The ambiance was strangely awkward and loud. I actually preferred some of the options on the Lunch Menu which I could no long get at dinner so I wasn't a huge fan of the selection. Nice place but if we stay at the Resort again we will probably look elsewhere. Also, I alerted the restaurant to my husband's birthday ahead of time and they blew it off."

"I made reservations for 7:00 pm, but when we arrived we were told to wait. It was 7:35 when I went back and asked about our table and finally got seated. The waiter was very friendly, but our meal took almost an hour to arrive."
