The spirit of abbondanza prevails at Briscola, Charlie Palmer's newest restaurant at Grand Sierra Resort. Under the direction of Executive Chef Dave Holman, small plate offerings, including Parmigiano rice cakes, and hand-cut fresh pastas accompany main course dishes that take a light approach to classical Italian cooking, from grilled lamb chops with eggplant caponata and creamy polenta to crispy barramundi with fennel and tomato stuffing.
Briscola, a traditional Italian card game, inspired the club-like comfortable décor, and in characteristic Roman-style, the dining room with vaulted ceiling is almost like eating in a wine cave. An over-sized wooden table used as a meat station takes center stage, and the fire-truck red Berkel meat slicer guarantees that salume and prosciutto are hand-cut and arranged to order.

"We had eaten at Briscola last year and loved the fresh pasta and varied menu. We were so disappointed in the menu and when the food arrived the salads were over dressed and soggy, the food was fair at best, I had the chicken with brussel sprouts, which was the best dish at the table by consensus. I had preordered flowers and balloons; they did not arrive until the following morning early, so they must have been somewhere in the hotel because we left prior to 8:00 am to go the the barn at the Event Center. Not sure I like the whole new atmosphere of the Grand Sierra. Guess we're just too home grown country for Reno."

I liked the wonderful ceiling for decor but think a few more "authentic" things (like a few pieces of art and maybe some light Italian-type music) would give a little more "feel" to the environment since it is an Italian restaurant.

"The hostess and waiting crew were attentive and moved quickly, I would have ranked the "Service" category higher, but one thing really irked my wife and me. When we ordered our main courses, we were asked, "Do you want the House or Ceaser salad?" We were asked in a way that it seemed it was part of the meal, but we found out when we received our bill that it was not ($6.00 per salad). I cannot truthfully state this is a common practice at this establishment (first time dining at Briscola), but the question should be asked in a different manner. Maybe, "Would you like to ADD a salad to your meal?"
As for the food, the bread was stale. The Spaghetti and Meatball(s) were okay, and the Osso Buco was good (not gamey)."

"I had the veal osso bucco--perfectly prepared, very moist and tender, and it came with a spoon for the marrow! Hubby had the chicken marinara, which was tender and flavorful. We shared a dessert of gelato--six small scoops, six wonderful flavors--a perfect item to share. Service was great--casual but attentive. The only odd note was the "market salad," which is served family style in plastic bowls. The salad was good and not overly dressed, but the presentation was so out of keeping with the higher end atmosphere."

"This was the best place for a reasonably priced meal that I have been to in Reno.
The special features like the fonduta were excellent.

"We used to love this restaurant and would take guests for an impressive meal. The quality of the food used to be outstanding; now it is horrible. New menu with very low prices should have made us realize that something had drastically changed. Hard to believe that this could be a Charlie Palmer restaurant. Back to the steak house for all meals in the future."

"Family restaurant. Loud & kids running around. Food portion very small. Service was slow. Filet was $26.00 & had to spit out 3 bites due to grizzle. Bearnaise was brought before salad so it was cold when steak arrived. Menu said sweet potato fries came with but there were only about 8-9 slivers of garnish - maybe sweet potato but too small to tell. Very disappointing. Special - sea bass was good, but again portion size very small. Sorry - won't come back will go to Charlie Palmer instead."
