"Went for Mother's Day brunch. Live music good but had to have volume decreased. Brunch items good but any menu items were a la carte. Max's is known for their fried chicken on waffles and these were not a buffet item and we were disappointed by that. Guess I should have called to clarify or ask when they confirmed.

"The crew at this restaurant all seemed to work together as a team, great attention to details and to your needs. Wine selection was very good, service perfect, a great place for my wife and I to relax and just be together. We look forward to visiting at different times of the days, and days of the week to see how the mood of the place changes. This will be fun."

"5/13/13 My son wanted to have a brunch for his graduation party. Heard this place had very good food with new/old feel. We had a great time with good service and really good food. In particular, the lemon poppy seed pancakes and almond crusted french toast were our favorites. Even though menu is limited, food was excellent. Modern feel from outside resturant with historic decor inside. Give it a try. You won't be disappointed."

"We had requested a quieter table, and after a short wait they were able to accommodate that. Our server, Kendall, was very patient and informative and overall we had a great experience. If you don't mind a little bit of noise and are looking for good food in a semi-casual atmosphere, this is a great place to check out."

"We chose to dine after 2 for a late lunch in the middle of the week. The restaurant was quiet. The waiter was friendly and helpful. We had shrimp with grits, a gown up version of grilled cheese with tomato soup, and hummus. The food tasted delicious. It is worth checking into."

"The place was so loud that it was almost painful. We were seated within about 10 minutes of our reservation time. Appetizers were mixed. The fried oysters were excellent, the bone marrow popcorn was pathetic. After that we waited forever for our entrees. The fried chicken, advertised as the best, was just pedestrian. The burger was very good. The mac and cheese was also worth the price. And speaking about price, that was about the most satisfying part of the evening. Very reasonably priced. In fact, in retrospect you actually do get what you pay for (except for the popcorn, not worth it at any price!)."

"Arrived early for a reserved table. Sat at bar and ordered a glass of wine. The place is really just a large bar with tables on 2 sides of the bar. It is a loud place with bar/nightclub feel. We had oysters and quail leg appetizers and shared a Tuna main course. All were very good and we plan to return to try other menu items. The service was Ok. Hostess was nice, as was the bar tender. but I think we just got the wrong waiter. He seemed more interested in taking then providing service. which was ok at our table but kept him away for long periods at other tables. He was terrible at check our status. We had a 10 minute stretch with empty glasses. Wine: They do give tastes no charge and it only took a few to find wine that was to our taste."

"Went here for a Bachelorette party. The ambiance is great; it's laid back and fun. I had set a really high bar for the food, so although it was excellent, I didn't think it was quite outstanding. "Third time we've been to Max's, and the first time we've been disappointed with the food. The chicken simply wasn't up to par. It lacked flavor, and we had to ask for the honey that usually comes with it. The mashed potatoes were very bland as well. Definitely didn't live up to our expectations for Max's based on our previous visits.
Also, we had a reservation. When we got there the place was empty, yet they stuck us in a table in the corner which was disappointing."

"Well, let's start with the good---The food was fantastic. I had their truffle egg sandwich, which was enormous and very tasty. I just wish I had split it with someone because it was too much for just one person.
My only complaint was that there were very limited drink options. Their menu offered both white and red sangria, but when we ordered the white sangria it was unavailable. Also, for those who don't want wine or champagne, it would have been nice to offer some type of beer/bloody beer special."

"We went there for Easter brunch and will never go back.Im sure the upstairs menu and atmosphere are worth going back to,just not the downstairs brunch.They were out of several items, the prime rib station employee informed us the prime rib was "over cooked" and he was right.Max's is famous for their chicken and none offered at the buffet.Desserts were bare bones and picked over.They ran out of plates twice and had to go to other room to get one.We had to ask if they could bring more ceviche out as it was empty when we arrived.Our reservations were at 2:30.I realize that is towards the end of the timed brunch but if they offer the brunch till 3, then they need to have it stocked and available.For the price it just wasn't worth it."

"A fun blend of fine wine and comfort food. A typical dish might be a nice Malbec paired with fried chicken or maybe the breaded sea scallops and a good Pinot Grigio. The staff is friendly and familiar and knowledgeable about the wines. Don't look here for hard-to-find small production wines. The wine list is complete but no wonderful finds in the sometimes overpriced selections. I would put this on the must-do list for a night out in Austin if you live there and for the traveler who wants some good local flavor. The scene is happening. Walk three blocks up to 6th Street for the heart of the Austin night life and music scene but better to eat here. Other recommendation for better food: iron cactus."

"Service was relatively slow, the restaurant was VERY loud, and the food was quite underwhelming, especially at $70 for two people. There are much better options downtown. I could not believe how underwhelming (and small) the burger was, with a base price of $15 (without any additions of cheese, bacon, or anything). Much better burgers can be found at Roaring Fork, Congress, 1886 Cafe and Bakery, Casino El Camino, Swift's Attic, and Clark's Oyster Bar, to name a few."

"My first trip to Austin happened to be on the first day of South by Sputhwest! Our dining experience was wonderful! Our server made excellent suggestions for both wine and food! So enjoyed the skillets for appetizers. Cant wait to return."

"My ceaser salad was so salty it could not be finished. Food took over an hour to arrive and the place was only half full. The waitress was extremely nice and pleasent but the rest of the experience was just not good. Sorry Max. Love the restaurant in Houston and San Antonio but Austin just not up to par in my opinion."

"I think this is more of a happy hour place than a dinner place. It was very loud and the check at the end was much higher than expected for the quality of food. Also the bread was very greasy, toast with too much butter. Overall it was a fund place to try. I just don't see myself going back again.
Annoying that the restaurant doesn't offer any discount on the valet service. When I spend that much on dinner, I don't expect full price valet too."

"We made reservations and were running late due to traffic. When we arrived the place was empty, so getting seated wasn't an issue. The wine was great the food in m opinion was ok. The best thing we had was the blue cheese fondue with figs and mushrooms. Don't know if I would go again but it was alright."
