"We were overwhelmed with the flavorful, yet subtle spices and accents to each dish. There were four of us each trying something different and we weren't disappointed in a single dish. The blending of south of the border spices added significantly to the appeal of everything we tried, from the oysters to start to the bread pudding for dessert.

"Our group of 8 happened to be celebrating a birthday on a busy night and our waiter told us they were understaffed, which might explain why we felt neglected service-wise. When we first sat down, our waiter asked if any of us had dined there before and when a few of us said Yes, he said that we could then explain how the menu works to the others! We enjoyed the food very much, but we dine out a lot so we all agreed that the service on this particular night was awful. Our wine sat unopened, our waiter never asked us how the food was, and he forgot to bring a lemon slice for one of our guests (the only special request from our table). He was also not knowledgeable about the menu, misinforming us about how many scallops were on the plate."

"Simply put, someone forgot to cook the food. three out of four entrees came with problems. The short ribs and pork tamales looked delicious but was not heated. The half chicken entree came raw.
The service was rated poor because we came with a senior who walked with a cane, while waiting for our table, we were asked to wait at the bar, it is totally inappropriate to expect a senior to get up onto the high bar chair, at minimum, a chair should have been offered, especially since the inside dining area was totally empty.
We dine out often and inevitably we sometimes encounter a terrible restaurant, this was it."

"I love everything about Bocanova, except for one thing. They have a great ambience, great staff and great food. But don't bring a vegan. They have been resistant to add a vegan option to the menu. They will work you, but this is Northern California and no menu should be without an option for non-meat eaters."

"Great Latin American inspired food, wonderful Jack London Square location, and efficient service all come together for a delightful dining experience. Lunch on the outdoor patio overlooking the Oakland estuary is a nice way to spend an afternoon. Dinner inside the nicely appointed restaurant provides a fun evening. "I made a reservation for Saturday morning brunch at 11am (when the restaurant opens) and got seated pretty promptly upon arrival. The brunch menu isn't very extensive, and the menu items are nothing surprising or out of the ordinary. I ordered the waffles, which came out soggy and soaked with maple syrup. The chantilly cream was okay, but next time I would probably either try the French toast or go somewhere else completely for a meal. The waterfront view is hard to beat, though."

"We definitely would return! Our waiter was well informed regarding the flavors of the lobster and white shrimp ceviche mixed with passion fruit, habanero - not too spicy - just a tingle. The flank steak with chimichurri was served as requested - medium rare and hot - just off the grill. And the Seasoned Papas Fritas were so crispy good! For dessert we had the chocolate croissant bread pudding topped with mexican chocolate ice cream - so yummy. The only not so good was the sangria - too bland and no fresh fruit."

"Bocanova is a an a la carte restaurant. The choices are varied and the portions are of reasonable size compared to other "tapas" style restaurants. The only negative is pricing is on the high side. "This is an excellent restaurant that is raising the interest in visiting Jack London Square. Great food three visits in a row. A modern warm decor, open, spacious feel, but not too noisy. Great place for larger groups. Service is very good.Parking easy in the JL Square lot, valet available. Good place to share dishes...not a tapas place but flavors and portions large enough youare so good you want to share. What has been delicious? Flank streak with chimichuri, pork loin, slow roasted pork tamale presented in a reconstructed way, scallops to fire for, good dressing on the green salad, roasted beets, a layered sweet potato dishes, and more. My foodie girlfriend said she would let me take her back often!"

"We've eaten here as a family of four several times now and have never been disappointed by the food and service. The food has great depth and variety. The cocktails and wine menu are diverse. The small plates help with kids with smaller appetites, although it does get pricey, so keep track of how much you are ordering. "You're paying for the view. Otherwise the food is extremely overpriced. $155 for 4 people to have brunch, without buying a bottle of wine? $9 for 3 deviled eggs with a tiny pinch of crabmeat. $12 cheese plate with 2 bites of cheese. The flavor was very disappointing as well. I knew it would be a pricy fancy brunch but this is just ridiculous."

"The Bread Pudding on the dessert menu is awesome, I would go back just for that. My husband thought the wilted greens were the bomb, although a little spicy for my pallet. My only concern about going back was the service was slow. I am sure that was not the norm but unfortunately that is what we experienced. The servers were apologetic for the slowness of the kitchen and bar, we waited 15 minutes for our drinks, so we knew they were aware of the issue. Like I said in the beginning I would go back for the bread pudding!!"

"They were very accommodating with my no fat, no sugar diet regimen. Food was exquisitely prepared and presented....flavors danced on my palate even with elimination of fat and sugar. Loved that they had a dessert for health minded diners....meyer lemon sorbet with quinoa crisp....GO BOCANOVA! Will be returning Friday, 4/19/13 with my daughter."

"What a great evening with friends at a restaurant that we'd none been to. From the service to the food to the view...excellent. "On line reservation indicating the occasion was a 'special one' (meeting our son's intended as we are from out of town) and we had never before been to your restaurant. Upon arrival and check in, the greeter had our name, but no information about any particular table. I asked about tables outdoors (it was a gorgeous evening) and was told absolutely not that the wait was very, very long. We were all very disappointed. The only tables available were apparently inside and were in no way 'special'. So much for my special requests.
So, feeling everyones disappointment I returned to the greeter and emphasized that I had made this special request on line. Suddenly, he 'discovered' a table. Hmmmm. Also, server was sullen, ungracious and disintere"
