"Perfect for romance and atmosphere. Cozy and intimate. You cannot order anything that would be a bad choice! Everything I have ever ordered is amazing - and my mother was a caterer, so I know good and well-seasoned food. This place is a "must go!""

"Service was great, unobtrusive but attentive. The wild boar was over cooked and lacked flavor. The halibut was slightly over seasoned with salt. Off night for the kitchen, but the service was excellent."

"If you haven't been for a year or so, don't go! The food doesn't compare to what it once was and the service is a joke! The attempt at having a gourmet menu coupled with amateur waiters led to real disappointment! The timing between courses was far too long, and the restaurant wasn't even busy. Just the basics: always serve women first if you can't get the food delivered to the table all at once like any respectable higher end restaurant."

"There were a few things that my husband and I really enjoyed about Kitchen 1540.Our scallops appetizer was amazing, and I would recommend it! Our dessert, which was not on the menu, so I think it was a special-amazing.It's now part of my top 5 favorite desserts. Our service was lacking- our waiter seemed rushed and not really into providing quality care or service. He didn't even know about the dessert special, he told us he would bring back bread and butter and he never did until we asked him right when he brought our meal.It took him 15 minutes to notice(or care)that I had an empty drink and then it was difficult to get him to come back and refresh my wine or even order the wine- our busboy provided better service."

"We have been to Kitchen 1540 several times because we enjoy the food and the outdoor courtyard. This time, our server Clyde was outstanding. He is extremely knowledgeable and attentive. Plus, steered us toward some great wine and food recommendations... including the wild boar and a frozen yuzu dessert which tastes the the cool older cousin of key lime pie."

"As Del Mar locals, used to love going to Kitchen 1540 for breakfast. But our recent visit left us disappointed. They took one of our favorites off the menu, the corned beef hash is gone. :( Also, the new menu comes with very high prices for small portions. My husband had their take on Huevos Rancheros which tasted pretty good, but was served on tiny tortillas and he left hungry. I ordered the kale salad which was delicious, but also very small for $12, and I am a small person! My kids shared a waffle which they liked and the fruit plate is still beautiful. The bacon is better now (especially for kids) because it is not pepper crusted. PLEASE bring back the corned beef hash and give portions that are a bit more generous! Thanks."

"Wonderful server and delicious food. But we're still wondering what took so long to get our food out of the kitchen. And the restaurant wasn't at all busy............"

"I do love going to L'Auberge & Kitchen 1540, got married at the hotel so full of nice memories. This is not the first time dining here and usually the food has been very good, this night I was disappointed. The food was not bad, it just didn't live up to expectations. The service was prompt, the waiter excellent and full of advice. I went unusual (for me) with un-French onion soup as they call it (more of a crème of French onion soup) and a fish dish called cobia garnished with sea urchin and crab, Asian style. Just didn't grab me and both were over salted for my liking. I have had some wonderful meals here, might just have been an off night."

"It is obvious that the chef takes pride in the avant-garde cuisine, but the dishes I tried fell flat. The cobia fish is served fried in two inch cubes, with a definite barnyard smell. Presumably this is intentional from some exotic spice, and the dish did not taste bad, but it was far from enticing. The desserts and the kale salad were also weird and a bit offputting. I say this as someone who is adventurous and who appreciates molecular gastronomy. iPrices are high, and the restaurant was mostly empty. The hotel lobby was hopping with happy happy hour patrons. They are wise to steer clear of the restaurant. The hotel should learn from successful nearby restaurants such as Market and Arterra that provide a far more satisfying experience."

"Compliments to the chef of Kitchen 1540 who made this truly a memorable dining adventure! Every course, from appetizer to dessert, was not only a feast for the palate but also for the eyes! The L'Tini is so refreshing and smooth - you just want to keep coming back for more! It is a bit pricey, so maybe save it for a special occasion. I will definitely be back!"

"A more friendly approach to corkage charges for those bringing wines from their collections (clearly from their wine cellar and not from a recent wine purchase) will probably result in more patronage from those with wine cellars."

"We thought we were lucky to get a table outdoors, but we found out what apparently everyone else already knows: the food is not good. It used to be very delicious and trendy- now it is just trendy. The dishes were fancy, pretty, very expensive, but were bizarrely lacking in coherent flavors. Some were cold. Some were overspiced (and that was the best). Overall, it is a failure of a gourmet effort. A waste of triple digits."

"The food was done in a very different way, and the staff was happy to "define" to us what is "going on, on the plate". the tastes were intersting and outstanding. Service was great. the Brussel Sprouts were unbelivable."

"WOW! I took my girlfriend there for her birthday. We both like to try different places and after a lot of research online this place had awesome reviews. I liked the menu, it was just enough to have great options but not overwhelming. She had the duck and I had the black cod along with the prime steak carpaccio appetizer. Everything tasted amazing and the staff was on point. Highly recommend this place."

"We've been here several times, and the food is always good. I decided to venture out and try something new - the lamb dish for dinner was excellent. Cooked perfectly, and wonderful flavors. We had the "milk" dessert which was a tres leches cake with coconut sorbet and pickled blueberry - it was wonderful. My only problem is that the menu descriptions could be a bit better - when reading the menu, nothing sounds appetizing. But then you order the food, and it is awesome."

"We went during restaurant week for lunch. Our table for four on a week day was ready and we had a choice of tables. We sat outside since it was a great San Diego afternoon aourn 70 degrees. Service was oprofessional and prompt as well as non intrusive. 3 of us ordered the salad and it was superb with local greens and a grilled small pear and half of a perfectly ripe avocado. The fourth had the seafood soup which was also excellent. The salmon with fennel was well prepared and great for a sunny day. The hamburger was very good as well. This a great restaurant for outdoor dining in the evening as well. The food is very simple and thoughtfully prepared. The service is always professionl. One of my favorite places in Noth County."

"Overall, this is a better hotel restaurant than most, but it lacks a good atmosphere and the decor leaves much to be desired. You kind of feel like you're sitting an an upscale cafeteria. The food is prepared well and seems to be fresh and local. Service is good. I would definitely recommend the food, but it's not exactly a special place."

"A friend and I ordered off the restaurant week lunch menu. I had the seafood chowder appetizer, which was very good and the kale salad entree, which was a disappointment because the lemony dressing did not compliment the salad very well. My friend had the same complaint about her salmon salad. The buttery, salted rolls they brought to start us off were excellent! Service was rather slow--took 1.5 hrs for lunch. Would like to check out the regular menu. $20 for this meal did not seem like a good deal."

"Very eclectic food choices, prepared and presented perfectly! Our waitress was knowledgeable and very patient in explaining the different choices.
We came for the restaurant week menu, but my friends chose some of the regular menu items and enjoyed them very much! This is one of my favorites in San Diego, the food never disappoints.
Only bad thing is how loud the place can get, this time we did not mind, but for a romantic dinner I might choose a different place just base on that."
