"My girlfriend and I had a wonderful experience at Yamashiro. The view was priceless, the drinks were well-made, and the food definitely exceeded expectations. Our "dessert sushi" was a nice attempt at being whimsical, but I don't know if it quite worked. All the pieces tasted the same. However, everything else about our evening there was outstanding. I can't wait to go back!"

"We went out for a cozy dinner for 2 and it was great. Wonderful design and atmoshphere. The food was good could have been a little better or had a larger sushi menue. I loved the fact that there was a variety of areas to sit at. We had a beautiful Hollywood night view, the garden was cozy and beautiful, there was a romantic sunset view, in other words we had a number of places to choose from to sit at. We choose the garden which was new and pretty. The view you can always try and find at other places, but the garden was unique."

"The restaurant itself was amazing. I took my girlfriend here for our anniversary and it was a very good choice. During dinner, all of the lights in dowtown LA are extremely vibrant. The ambiance inside is second to none. The food on the other hand was "different." Was nmot the best, but it was still pretty good. Seeing as the food was a bit pricey, I would suggest Yamashiro for a special occasion such as an anniversary, valentines, or even a romantic birthday dinner. Also the valet parking was an extra $7.50."

"Maitre D' was rude when she sat us down. We asked for another table in a quieter, more remote area and when she was walking back after making the changes, she made a comment to one of the servers that we were being difficult. That was not very professional. Our server was also very unattentive. We ordered an extra Miso Soup in the middle of meal and it didn't arrive even after we were done with our meal so when the server finally came around, we told him to cancel the order. We had to wait with the necks extended to get some attention from our server. I usually take my out of town guests here for the ambiance but I've been very disappointed the last few times I've been there."

"Even though we had reservations for 7:15, we got there on time and had to wait for 20 minutes to get seated. I had specifically asked for a garden table, but we were taken to a window table. Therefore, had to go back and wait another 10 minutes to get seated where we had asked for. Food was okay. Appetizers came in very staggered. Waitress checked on us only a couple of times. The heaters were strong and we asked from the beginning to get them turned off and it took around an hour for it to happen and then suddenly half hour before we leave they were turned on again. I don't think this place will be on my top 10 places to go to any more."

""Yamashiro" is Japanese for "Mountain Palace," and we felt it certainly was from the moment we stepped out of the car. Upon entering we were greeted and sat in the garden, a tremendous site! The server was very helpful with describing the items on the menu and how to eat them for we were new to Cal-Fusion foods. One of our most prevailing problems is that we were seated right next to the Ladies' room and the entrance/exit to the front of the restaurant. This provided noise, traffic, and onlooker issues. Other than that, we had a great time!"

"Impeccable view of the city and seating area in the botanical gardens is just absolutely breathtaking! I was a little disappointed that the Pagoda Bar was closed because I had guests from out of town that I really wanted to show that to. We also had a problem with the Monty Python screening. I love that movie but it didn't fit the mood of the restaurant and got too loud and distracting.....especially the scene where this fat guy ate so much that he literally exploded. I would recommend a martial arts film maybe but muted or at a very low volume so that people could eat their dinner peacefully and chit chat with their party."

"Gorgeous restaurant, very romantic. Our waiter was a little off, possibly new, but we got the wrong food twice, which the waiter blamed on the 'runner.' But it was fine, he corrected it promptly so it wasn't a big deal to us as we're also in this industry so maybe we're a little more understanding of such. The scenic view is for anyone who is new to California, a MUST-SEE of all of Hollywood! Steak and lobster were cooked to perfection, so it was worth the price. "Jenny was our waitress. She was very prompt and anticipated our needs well. The restaurant has BEAUTIFUL views of L.A. and the sunset. Our reservations were at 5. We arrived at 4:45 p.m. to tour the property (Japanese gardens on site) and take pictures. By the time we were seated, it was nearing sunset and the sunset was gorgeous during our dinner. "We loved the view and the food. It was terrific. The Bushido martini was fabulous! We were disappointed that dancing didn't start until midnight. We went for New Year's Eve so our dinner reservation was at 8pm. We didn't get to enjoy ringing in the New Year. They should have specified that dancing wasn't until midnight. The food however, was well worth it."

"The quality of food was at the "C-" level. My husband's filet mignon was worse than something from Sizzler's! My chocolate souffle wasn't really a souffle - it was a chocolate cake. My soup was as far from delicious as the Earth's distance from the Sun.

"The last time I went to Yamashiro was in 1979. The experience this time was not something that made me regret the 30-years' gap. Why do I say that?
1) Now, as then, the selections---while good---were largely overpriced for comparable fare in other restaurants around town (i.e., on Restaurant Row, at Crustacean, et al.)
2) The waiter brought me a noticeably-chipped cup from which I was supposed to drink my tea. And the post-dinner green tea reeked of fish oil (a sign of cheap tea). Yuk!
3) The dessert menu was a joke. "S'mores?" C'mon...and surprisingly (for a Japanese restaurant) nary a sign of mochi ice cream! They had New York cheesecake, and five other dessert offerings, none of which would require the services of a pastry chef"

They went out of their way to make the evening unique and memorable. "My wife and I are long time patrons of Yamashiro, so we know what to expect when we dine at this gem of a restaurant overlooking the city lights. It's a wonderful destination for special occasions; we were celebrating our 28th Anniversary on our recent visit. One of the things that I really like about the restaurant is that their menu changes fairly regularly; it's great that they don't stay with the same dishes year after year; that keeps it fresh. "One of the best meals I've had in a long time. The Black Cod was superb. The Hawaii Five-O rolls a table favorite, as was the sashimi in truffle oil. It was a very rainy night on Friday, but the place was full. A testament to the food AND service. Our server was attentive and quite knowledgeable about the menu. I ordered the Black Cod on her recommendation that it was her favorite dish on the menu. My husband's short ribs were also excellent. And everyone had a great time. My husband, an executive chef, even went into the kitchen to thank the chef for the great meals. He brought him back to our table so we could all thank him. Can't wait to go back again when the weather is better. The view would be incredible."

"One of the worst meals we've had. The crabcakes were mealy and tasteless, the tempura was doughy, the salmon was overcooked to inedibility, the asparagus were tough, woody and tasteless, the fillet was a nice piece of meat ruined by a cloyingly sweet sauce billed as a "peppercorn" sauce, the accompanying vegetables were completely raw. Only the mashed potatoes-preserved lemon with the salmon and wasabi with the beef-were correctly prepared. The setting was nice, although the "view" table I had requested was 1/2 obstructed by pillars. It was my husband's 55th birthday and I had hoped for a better meal than the amateur effort we got. I would not recommend Yamashiro, with the possible exception of a drink at the bar to enjoy the view."

"We love Yamashiro's! We always spend special occasions at this restaurant and Tuesday night was my mother's birthday; my parents are from Chicago so this was an amazing treat. I've always found the food 8 out of 10 but the filet mignon and lobster tail I had was actually one of the better I've had ever. I'd stay away from the tempura calamari, bland and not not like traditional tempura I was expecting but overall wonderful food as usual and our server, forgot her name, but tall blond was OUTSTANDING, left her additional tip on top of the 18% gratuity due to her amazing service, gentleness, friendliness and professionalism! "Take your GPS system, but once there the view is spectacular. It's good sushi, but doesn't compare to Katsuya! My soup, a spicy seafood, was a bit heavy on the mushrooms and kind of ruined the spicy seafood part. Waiters were kind of slow, especially since there was almost nobody dining the night we went. Apart from that, it's a clean well taken care of restaurant with an amazing view!"

"I took my wife to Yamashiro's over a year ago for the first time on her birthday. This year, we returned for our 2nd wedding anniversary, and it did not disappoint. Through OpenTable I requested a table with a Western View so we could see the lights of the city. They seated us in a very romantic corner table, quiet, with a great view. The view, champagne, food were all fantastic again. We had albacore tuna sashimi, tropical albacore ceviche, field green salad, and both had the cracked pepper filet mignon (drool). AMAZING."

"This is the last time I will ever go to this restaurant. My last experience was terrible also, but the view is what brought us back. It is just not worth it anymore. I think the service is more important that the scenery...especially when the service is so poor that it takes the enjoyment away from your evening. We waited 20 minutes before anyone waited on us, and the another 15 minutes for waters and to order our food. The appetizer was served with our meal. The waitress was very inattentive to her tables. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone ever. If you are going to pay for a good meal than you should get at least average service and ambience."

"The only negative part was that my boyfriend and I walked up the hill to come to the restaurant and the parking attendant refused to let us enter without valeting our car! She said it's a private run business and they can refuse people who don't valet. This makes no sense to us and how are other restaurants not private too? Awful."

"I had made reservations for 6:15 PM but ended up being caught up in traffic so called in to let them know that we'd be about 30 minutes late and they were very understanding and accommodation of the situation. When we got there the valet was quick to take our car and once we entered it took less than 2 minutes for us to be seated. They were going to place us in the Garden but we asked for a outdoor view and they gladly seated us where we requested. The view is spectacular and the food was wonderful. A little bit on the pricier side but the view is totally worth it. Our server was friendly, our drinks were always full and not once did we need to try to get their attention, they were always near by. Wonderfully romantic date place, a must go!"

"I've been to Yamashiro many times. I always take in-town visitors there, because the view is amazing, the food is great, and the energy is fun. Well...it used to be. I don't know if it's the economy, or if the place has lost it's shine, but it was empty and dull and disappointing. I suddenly noticed the tiny menu that never changes and the mediocre presentation of everything. I said nothing to my guests, because it was still unique to them. But I won't be returning. And I really hate to say that, but there are just too many places in L.A. with amazing sushi and good energy. That's just my two cents."

"I used to be impressed with Yamashiro, but after eating at other nice restaurants I am not. The service was not great for such an upscale place. You go someplace like this to be catered to,not to try to flag down a bus boy so someone can get you another drink. The food also is nothing to rave about. The sushi rolls are just ok. I had the crunch roll and it had a weird vegetable in it that overpowered it. Also the salad I had was incredibly bland. My husband and I are going to break our tradition next year and celebrate our anniversary someplace else."

"We ordered a lot of food and enjoyed very much. Recommend appitizer truffle hamachi, kurabota pork carnitas, sear filet caparcio. For entree we had very very spcial American Waggu Steak and cook on top of salt plate came with salad. Oh this is YUMMMM very tender juicy from sea salt and melted to the mouth. You should also try COD with wasabi mash potato. Two thump up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

"Overview: Going to this restaurant for the view alone is worth it! The ambiance is very nice, the service was good, and I love the history. After dinner, we walk a few steps to the Pagoda Bar that featured the same great view and nice seating.
Review of our meal: - Yama-jito (saki mojito with cranberry juice): 3 out of 5. Not very strong but good flavor. - Calamari: 2 out of 5. No flavor in the batter, sauce was a bit runny. Nothing special. - Cod entree: 5 out of 5. Cod was perfectly cooked and complimented well with the wasabi mashed potato and mushroom/mustard greens. Mushroom/mustard greens were a bit salty but when you made a bite with all the pieces, it was perfect! - S'mores dessert: 3.5 out of 5. Chocolate cake part was dry"

"The view and ambiance of Yamashiro's was priceless. I lived in Japan for three years and felt as though I had returned. The building is about 100 years old and furnishings and decor were imported from Japan. I had hoped the food would be more authentic Japanese, or at least the menu would offer authentic Japanese options. But all and all the atmoshpere made it difficult to be disappointed with the food. I would deffinatley frequent this restaurant for a romantic evening, spectacuar view, and a cocktail. Also, I highly recommend visiting the bar down stairs from the restaurant property. It's outdoors so on a clear night it's a great pace to relax and and have a drink."

"The first few times i dined at Yamashiro i was floored-the view, history &elaborate menu were all very romantic & fairy-tale-esque. In the 8+ times I've visited thereafter, I found my disappointment on a gradual but definite incline- due to the service in particular. Perhaps they're understaffed (though it hasn't been crowded during my last 5 visits)as, while the servers are very nice, they have on the whole been forgetful and less than attentive. If memory serves, the menu has also been significantly abridged. Overall, my boyfriend & I decided this may be our last trip there. Equally magnificent views, larger & comparably-priced menus & more attentive staff can definitely be found in LA w/o the winding schlepp to this hard-to-find spot."
