"Take your GPS system, but once there the view is spectacular. It's good sushi, but doesn't compare to Katsuya! My soup, a spicy seafood, was a bit heavy on the mushrooms and kind of ruined the spicy seafood part. Waiters were kind of slow, especially since there was almost nobody dining the night we went. Apart from that, it's a clean well taken care of restaurant with an amazing view!"

"I took my wife to Yamashiro's over a year ago for the first time on her birthday. This year, we returned for our 2nd wedding anniversary, and it did not disappoint. Through OpenTable I requested a table with a Western View so we could see the lights of the city. They seated us in a very romantic corner table, quiet, with a great view. The view, champagne, food were all fantastic again. We had albacore tuna sashimi, tropical albacore ceviche, field green salad, and both had the cracked pepper filet mignon (drool). AMAZING."

"This is the last time I will ever go to this restaurant. My last experience was terrible also, but the view is what brought us back. It is just not worth it anymore. I think the service is more important that the scenery...especially when the service is so poor that it takes the enjoyment away from your evening. We waited 20 minutes before anyone waited on us, and the another 15 minutes for waters and to order our food. The appetizer was served with our meal. The waitress was very inattentive to her tables. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone ever. If you are going to pay for a good meal than you should get at least average service and ambience."

"The only negative part was that my boyfriend and I walked up the hill to come to the restaurant and the parking attendant refused to let us enter without valeting our car! "I had made reservations for 6:15 PM but ended up being caught up in traffic so called in to let them know that we'd be about 30 minutes late and they were very understanding and accommodation of the situation. When we got there the valet was quick to take our car and once we entered it took less than 2 minutes for us to be seated. They were going to place us in the Garden but we asked for a outdoor view and they gladly seated us where we requested. The view is spectacular and the food was wonderful. A little bit on the pricier side but the view is totally worth it. Our server was friendly, our drinks were always full and not once did we need to try to get their attention, they were always near by. Wonderfully romantic date place, a must go!"

"I've been to Yamashiro many times. I always take in-town visitors there, because the view is amazing, the food is great, and the energy is fun. Well...it used to be. I don't know if it's the economy, or if the place has lost it's shine, but it was empty and dull and disappointing. I suddenly noticed the tiny menu that never changes and the mediocre presentation of everything. I said nothing to my guests, because it was still unique to them. But I won't be returning. And I really hate to say that, but there are just too many places in L.A. with amazing sushi and good energy. That's just my two cents."

"I used to be impressed with Yamashiro, but after eating at other nice restaurants I am not. The service was not great for such an upscale place. You go someplace like this to be catered to,not to try to flag down a bus boy so someone can get you another drink. The food also is nothing to rave about. The sushi rolls are just ok. I had the crunch roll and it had a weird vegetable in it that overpowered it. Also the salad I had was incredibly bland. My husband and I are going to break our tradition next year and celebrate our anniversary someplace else."

"Overview: Going to this restaurant for the view alone is worth it! The ambiance is very nice, the service was good, and I love the history. After dinner, we walk a few steps to the Pagoda Bar that featured the same great view and nice seating.
Review of our meal: - Yama-jito (saki mojito with cranberry juice): 3 out of 5. Not very strong but good flavor. - Calamari: 2 out of 5. No flavor in the batter, sauce was a bit runny. Nothing special. - Cod entree: 5 out of 5. Cod was perfectly cooked and complimented well with the wasabi mashed potato and mushroom/mustard greens. Mushroom/mustard greens were a bit salty but when you made a bite with all the pieces, it was perfect! - S'mores dessert: 3.5 out of 5. Chocolate cake part was dry"

"The view and ambiance of Yamashiro's was priceless. I lived in Japan for three years and felt as though I had returned. The building is about 100 years old and furnishings and decor were imported from Japan. I had hoped the food would be more authentic Japanese, or at least the menu would offer authentic Japanese options. But all and all the atmoshpere made it difficult to be disappointed with the food. I would deffinatley frequent this restaurant for a romantic evening, spectacuar view, and a cocktail. Also, I highly recommend visiting the bar down stairs from the restaurant property. It's outdoors so on a clear night it's a great pace to relax and and have a drink."

"The first few times i dined at Yamashiro i was floored-the view, history &elaborate menu were all very romantic & fairy-tale-esque. In the 8+ times I've visited thereafter, I found my disappointment on a gradual but definite incline- due to the service in particular. Perhaps they're understaffed (though it hasn't been crowded during my last 5 visits)as, while the servers are very nice, they have on the whole been forgetful and less than attentive. If memory serves, the menu has also been significantly abridged. Overall, my boyfriend & I decided this may be our last trip there. Equally magnificent views, larger & comparably-priced menus & more attentive staff can definitely be found in LA w/o the winding schlepp to this hard-to-find spot."

"Great environment for dining on a special occasion, too bad the food was not special. I had the seared ahi tuna which was below average. My girlfriend had the BBQ short ribs, tasty and better than the tuna. We had the S'mores dessert which saved the meal from being a 1-star. Probably a better place to have drinks and dessert than the dinner. Not worth another trip for dinner."

"My dining experiance was good. The food was good. Although the restaurant was busy Saturday night, the wait for my dinner was not long. The drinks however were not good at all. I had a an apple martini & my date had a mango martini. I could have made a better drink & I'm not a bartender. If I'm going to pay top dollar for a drink it better be good. The drinks at the outdoor bar were just as bad. I highly recommend good bartenders."

"Dinner was fine. However, the main reason why I went to this restaurant was for the view and they sit my party at a table facing the the hill instead of the city. I would have expected this if I just walked up, but I made reservations before hand. "It was my first visit to Yamashiro's, and I absolutely loved it. In fact, my boyfriend of nine years proposed to me 9/26/09 out in the garden. The view and landscaping was beautiful. I couldn't have asked for a more romantic setting. However, the one drawback was that the pathway was quite narrow, which made it hard to maneuver around other couples while walking through. Also, my now fiance admitted that he had originally wanted to propose to me in the pagoda, but the gate was locked. The food was inventive and delicious. We loved the lemongrass mashed potatoes and the strawberry preserve donuts. All of the servers were helpful and attentive."

"Overall we had a very good dinner but the service was lacking. The food was excellent. Everyone in our group of 5 thought it was the best sushi we had ever eaten. The seared tuna was perfect as was the spicy soup. We enjoyed our drinks and saki. The view and ambiance was wonderful. The only downside was the inattentive service. When present the servers were very good but we would have appreciated the simple question, "another?". While waiting near the bar we had to initiate drink service. Later at our table, we had finished our first (and only) drinks and we would have been happy to reorder, but the server never asked for the sale. The servers were infrequent visitors at our table. Great food and setting, work on the service."

"I've had dinner here once with a large group and just recently for my wedding anniversary and both experiences were awesome! The filet mignon is the best my husband and I have had anywhere! Yamashiro sits on top of the Hollywood Hills and you can see all of Hollywood and L.A. you can see the Griffith Park Observatory to the left and other notable buildings through out L.A. There are gorgeous Japanese gardens to walk through and they have a Pagoda bar below the gardens. The atmosphere is very comfy in the bar area and the bar tender made some great drinks for us before we sat down to dinner. I have sat in the center garden area both times we have gone, there are coy ponds and a cute garden. I highly recommend it!"

"For our 3rd Wedding Anniversary, I booked a reservation online with OpenTable.com at Yamashiro months earlier. When it came close to the day, I actually forgot where I made the reservation for. Luckily I received an reminder email from OpenTable a couple of days ahead. We were pleasantly greeted by the valet and reception. We were seated promptly upon arrival. The oysters shooters were delicious. We did get a little attitude from the waitress when we asked for additional Tabasco sauce for our shooters, but we let that pass. She commented, "There's already Tabasco in there." But she doesn't realize that we like our shooters extra spicy. The restaurant was surprisingly busy for a Tuesday evening. Overall, it was a good dinner."

We were on vacation from Lancaster, PA and after dinner, out by the Pagoda Bar, we met someone who went to college for drama in Lancaster and lived just 2 blocks from where i grew up. Small world! Overrall i would say it was one of the best dining experiences of my life."

"I hadn't been to Yamashiro for about 5 years. It was always a noted tourist place, but the food was mediocre. My daughter wanted to go for her 10th birthday. We were so surprised. The food was excellent. Apparently, the got a new head chef a few years ago, and it definitely shows. Three adults, one child. We all had wonderful meals and all had a great time. A little pricey, but I will go back."

"The ambiance and view from Yamashiro is worth the trip. The appetizer menu was so great that we opted for four appetizers rather than two entrees. The appetizers were wonderful and inventive but we were dissappointed in our bland sushi roll. If I go back I will avoid the sushi and stick with great scallops, filet carpaccio, etc. We kept a menu so that we could keep ordering as our meal went on but our server made feel a little rushed. One of those, "Anything else? Let me bring you the check." I don't think I was even asked if I wanted a second martini. We were in and out in less than an hour. This was dissapointing since I had heard service was a high point and we had an early dinner before they were packed."

"Arrived at the restaurant around 7pm with some daylight left. Was able to see the whole city transform as night came. My wife loved the food and the service. It was her birthday, as I noted in the reservations, and without me having to remind them that day, they brought out ice cream with a lit candle for her at the end of the meal. We got set up in a corner window table, so we had two views of the city. It was simply amazing. The only inconvenience I had was when we were given the menus without the waiter's recommendation. When the waiter came again we ordered the food. I didn't realize it until I heard the waiter go over their specials and recommendations with other tables. I would have liked their input before I looked it over."

For my 27th birthday, my Fiance took me to Yamashiro where we enjoyed unique and tasty drinks (I love the Basil-Ito!) at the Pagoda Bar, listened to the DJ spin in front of a 600 year old Japanese Pagoda, and watched the sunset over the Hollywood Hills. At dinner, our server was attentive without being overly so and incredibly knowledgeable. She provided fantastic advice on the appetizers and entrees, which we followed. Our table was bussed and glasses filled without so much as a look or a glance. Yamashiro is the entire package."

"First time at Yamashiro. And I have to say that my date and I were not impressed. Eventhough we made reservation, the table that we got was very small. Before even sitting down; we requested that for larger table. We arrived at 7:30PM, and there were more than enough tables to accommodate our needs. Given the price, we were disappointed by the plating of both the appetizers and main courses, and to top it all off the food was not all that good to eat or look at. And the worest part is the table was too small for both our appetizers & main dish; at which point we requested a 2nd time for a larger table and was denied. They only offered to keep our food warm and serve it later. NO WAY! One of our main courses was a Sear Ahi Tuna...keep warm?"

"We loved the feel of the restaurant, the view absolutely stunning as it changed thro' sunset to evening. My salmon was excellent along with the lemon mashed potatoes and both the Calamari and the Tempura appetisers pleased all of us [4]. "What a wonderful restaurant! The amazing view of L.A. is visible from the time you leave your car with the valet until you pick it up again. Add to that the creative and delicious food and the knowledgeable and friendly personnel, and I was thrilled. I had a couple of visitors with me, and one had never before been to L.A. It was the perfect way to introduce him to the area--food and view at the sametime. When we arrived for dinner, it was still light outside. As we dined, the sun set and the lights of the city stretched for miles. This is a great way to show off the city in a delightful and relaxing atmosphere. "What you're paying for and getting here is the view, but not the food. The food is moderately good, nothing special and you can see how far this place would go if they had better food. The Pagoda bar looks great and I'm sorry we didn't get to spend more time there. The service is good and make sure you ask for a west facing table."

"The entire dining experience was very nice. Food was good, service was good. But one turn-off was the attire of some of the other customers. The restaurant description says "elegant casual" and as it was our 24th wedding anniversary we dressed accordingly, expecting the other patrons to be dressed similarly. We were disappointed when customers arrived wearing jeans, collarless t-shirts, tank tops, hoodies, flip-flops, etc. We were expecting an exclusive and refined dining atmosphere and although the food was good, the atmosphere was very "Applebee's". They should really enforce their dress code."

"Excellent service and food. Be prepared to pay a little extra but the food, service and ambiance makes it all worth it. The view was great. The restaurant is on a mountain over looking the city lights of Hollywood. Everyone was very friendly, felt welcome as soon as I walked in. This is one of my favorite places, and they have not disappointed."

"Took my boyfriend here for his birthday. The american wagyu steak and asian glazed baby back ribs were delicious. Food was served in a very short amount of time. The view was gorgeous, and our waiter was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. Definitely a place to come back to in the future."
