"We arrived early at the restaurant (5pm) and found out that the service starts at 5:30pm. Fortunately, the waiter told us we could have a seat and have something to drink if we wanted. We were in the mood for a bottle of Bordeaux and the waiter suggested a Margau which was great. We started with a vegetable soup followed by mussels basquaise which was recommend by our waiter. Great appetizers. We then decided to have the steak and the short ribs. The steak was not as tender as expected and my partner's short ribs were really dry. The desserts were good and we received a complimentary glass of sweet wine which paired really well with it. Overall the food was just ok but the service made up for the whole experience."

"Last weekend was my second visit to Chez Papa, both were wonderful. My girlfriend and I first dined at the restaurant for her birthday and had a great experience. The mussels were extremely tender and very tasty. The Lamb was the best I have ever had! We decided to visit Chez Papa for the romantic atmosphere and to taste the fabulous lamb again. We plan to be regular patrons of this fine restaurant. I highly recommend Chez Papa to all of my friends."

"We always enjoy this great bistro! The food is imaginative and truly yummy! Took a "foodie" New Yorker there recently and she claimed it some of the best food she'd had in San Francisco!"

"Me and my wife went to chez papa last Tuesday night for dinner,we love that cozy French bistros that remind us our trip to Paris.Unfortunetely the food didn't quite meet our expectations,we were first disappointed to find out that they no longer serve their delicious rack of lamb with ratatouille, our waiter did recommend us the beef short ribs and oh boy he was right..A must to have! We also tried the asparagus salad again ,it was good but could have used more cheese on it (it says tome de savoie on the menu, but wasn't that night..maybe ran out..?) The burrata salad not so fan to complex in flavors...The lamb daube was delicious as usual! Thanks to our waiter for the great recommendation on that bottle of cote du Rhone and friendly service"

"The food was very good and service efficient and pleasant However, the noise level was deafening to the point that conversation was nearly impossible and dining experience essentially non-existent. It was simply a fill up with good quality fuel, definitely not a special occasion spot."

"Wanted to treat my family to unique dining experience from the usual chinese/asian dinner. Chez Papa hit the spot with the flavorful sauces, tender meats, and succulent mussels. Water and bread consistently refilled. The wine recommendation on the chalk board was very good value for $30! Overall the fantastic dining experience. We thoroughly enjoyed all the dish offerings here and will be sure to return!"

"This has always been one of my favorite neighborhood gems since it first opened when I moved to the Dog Patch community. I regret that I have not been here as much as I would like to but it was great to know that it's just as good as it always was if not even better. I visited Chez Papa with a dear friend from Paris. She loved the meal of mussels and fries and showed me how to eat it the french way. If she enjoyed her meal -- it's gotta be good. Oh, the creme brulee was excellent too."

"Lots of variety and great skill, with attention to presentation. Life fills the restaurant from the creative energy the staff puts into the preparation. These folks enjoy their profession and it shows in the results. A great example that a restaurant can be less formal but still top notch.
Went back a second time to see if the first time was a fluke. No fluke--it's still great."

"It is always a great pleasure to dine at Chez Papa, because of the consistent quality of food and the gracious, wonderful staff. My favorite mussels Moules Mariniere are my "go to" dish. My husband loved the Salade Nicoise with the sardine toasts. Mandatory are the Allumettes frites, which are always hot and superb. But don't forget the incomparable side dish of Canneloni beans in olive oil and mixed herbs. We both tried the escargot with Pernod and they were fab. The Rose Provencial was flavorful. With this intoxicating food, we could have been in Paris or the Cote d'Azure!"

"For a small menu, there is abundant variety of flavors. We shared three small plates (beef tartare, grilled local sardine, and mussels in white wine with pommes frites), and one entree (lamb daube). The food was uniformly well composed, skillfully prepared and quite delicious! Really nice, well chosen wine list presented some good pairings with the food. Very attentive, but not intrusive service with no gaps between courses. Oh, and the raspberry macaroon is to die for! Powerful fresh raspberry flavor ... crispy exterior, pillowy soft interior. The view from the hilltop is a nice bonus too!"

"As always, a neighborhood favorite when I am back in my old 'hood! Celebrated my Dad's birthday and they decorated the dessert with a candle for him. Glasses of dessert wine on the house made it even more special. I live in NYC now and miss my special Chez Papa!"

"I live on Potrero Hill and have dined several times at Chez Papa, but the last two times I've had dinner there ( the last being just this last Monday March 11) I was just aghast at the level of service and so embarrassed to have brought friends there. ( Yes I made reservations) It took at least 10-15 minutes to even get a waiter to take our drink or dinner order. The wine came--and the waiter literally reached across my face to pour the bottle...our dinners arrived and plates were slammed down like a mess hall. The wait staff seemed stressed and angry. It's too bad because the food is always good-- that's what keeps them coming back."

"Chez Papa never disappoints...it's on our list of "much go there!" places in SF, and we do enjoy a wonderful dinner there every time...and everything on the dinner menu is even more delish since the new chef took over sometime late fall 2012. Kudos to the CP team!
Now, maybe just a little attention to the dessert menu wouldn't hurt -- more variety -- but otherwise all is topnotch!"

"Great little spot. My butter lettuce salad came with less components than I thought given the description, but all of the other food was above expectations. The creme brulee was out of this world good. I will dream about the creme brulee for years to come.If you're sound averse, I wouldn't come here for dinner, though. I guess because it's a small place it got very loud when we dined on a Wednesday night, and there wasn't music playing. On the other hand, I came once for lunch and it wasn't nearly as loud..."

"I took my wife to Chez Papa for Valentine's Day. The dining room is fairly small (maybe 20 tables), and it was busy but we got a table right away, just before our reservation time. We found street parking just up the hill. They were only serving a pre-fixe three course menu that night, and the price was twice as much as their daily pre-fixe, which I thought was a bit steep. It was a special occasion, though, so I didn't let it spoil the night. It took quite a while for the waiter to take our order, but once he did, the food came relatively quickly and successive courses came promptly. Food was delicious and beautiful. We brought our own wine."

"Chez Papa is one of our favorites, and we've been there a number of times. Usually the food is consistently excellent. This last time the chef must have had a bad night. On the appetizers, the mussels were, as usual, outstanding. However the Kobe beef tartar had an excess of ketchup (ketchup???) and we could not eat it. On the main, the cod was again excellent, but the duck breast was very tough and stringy, and barely edible, though the tastes were good. The deserts and wine were wonderful."

"This most recent meal at Chez Papa was a disappointment. Vegetable soup was pallid. Black cod was mushy and the accompaniments to this main course were too sweet."

"My boyfriend and I went here for here for our anniversary and it was a wonderful experience. He had the salad and steak. We shared the mussels with garlic and I had the lamb. Everything was delicious and they didn't rush us. The restaurant was very busy for a Wednesday night. They actually only sat people who had reservations so I would definitely advise people to do that. Great service. Great food. Will go again"

"The food was superb! Creatively presented and reasonably priced for a French bistro in the city. I enjoyed the 3-course prix-fixe dinner for $37 that began with a Lyonnaise salad with a poached egg. That refeshing dish was followed by lamb & root veggies in a tasty red wine sauce. The lamb was cooked perfectly and melted in my mouth! For the dessert course, I shared the chocolate fondant with my husband, who had previously enjoyed his soup and cassoulet. His entree included chicken and sasauge, both very tender. The service was great. What a gem to find such a tasty neighborhood restaurant just off of I-280 and only a 10 minute drive to the Orpheum Theater. We now know where to dine before a show! Merci!"

"It's a good neighborhood restaurant. Their prix fixe menu just went up in price. I don't think it's worth it anymore before the deserts at Chez Papa are only so so. You will be better off ordering full size portions instead of the prix fixe menu."
