Review 7 for Terzo Piano

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Went for lunch during a friday and it was moderately busy. The entrees were decent but nothing memorable. I had the whitefish with fennel and almonds but it only tasted of lemon and a little bit of fennel. The chocolate semifredo dessert was exceptional. It was by far the best part of the meal with peanuts, chocolate and carmel all fitting together nicely."

Review 8 for Terzo Piano

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"The light airy space here is not to be missed -- whether you've just spent a morning in the Modern Wing, or just slipped over from a busy am at the office. The clean feel of the space is matched by the refreshingly simple menu... Loved that they did not seem at all bothered to accommodate a non-meat eater when I ordered the arugula salad without the proscuitto, and also was pleased that the soup du jour (cauliflower bisque) did not include cream. There were a lot of plates of the three mini-burgers and wonderfully looking fries passing our table, but we were thrilled with our light fare. Have made numerous lunch visits here and I just keep enjoying it more and more. K. Anderson"

Review 12 for Terzo Piano

Overall Rating 1.0 out of 5 (Poor)
"Took my wife to Terzo Piano for lunch one day as we both work downtown and enjoy spending time at the Art Institute. The restaurant has a unique atmosphere that really isn't comparable to any other restaurant in the city. Obviously, its very modern and that may not appeal to some people. The food however is not unique and my wife and I agreed that this was one of the worst meals we have ever had. We found the potato and garlic soup to be unimpressive. My wife ordered the crab cakes and they were almost inedible. I had the mini burgers which were just as bad. We couldn't figure out how such basic items could taste so awful. I can't imagine any reason to return especially since our bill with tip was $54 - no alcohol was ordered."

Review 15 for Terzo Piano

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"The overall experience was wonderful mostly due to our waitress and her excellent service and superior knowledge about the food and wine.
The one negative is that the food does not arrive hot enough. We realize how far the kitchen is from the main dining area and we thought that maybe the restaurant should invest in covers for the hot food.

Review 18 for Terzo Piano

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"I was disappointed with the decor---I guess I thought having a restaurant in the Art Museum ---the restaurant would be somewhat themed. Instead---cafeteria style dining.

Review 20 for Terzo Piano

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"I cannot possibly express enough the joy I derived from my dining here. The special event brunch with cocktail pairings was outstanding. Moreover, while the ambiance was minimalist efficiency, I suspect it was done solely to ensure nothing detracted from the warmth of the staff. Every waiter/waitress I have should be so wonderful and attentive. Additionally, the rest of the crew worked together in such a well-choreographed dance that was eclipsed only by the food. The final surprise was a bill which was well within reason. I look forward with great anticipation my return to Terzo Piano!"

"Enjoyed a 2 hour lunch with husband and our 2 boys ages 10 and 13. It all worked. One of the desserts was "the best I ever had" said the 10 year old. It was great to combine a freindly place for a family with a adult vibe. We enjoy looked at and talking about architecture & buildings, and this place was ideal for that."

Review 24 for Terzo Piano

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"service slow, food disappointing.
I wrote ahead asking about birthday celebration possibilities...no response. So, at the restaurant I asked what was available, and they said not to worry they would bring a special dessert. The "special dessert" was 4 1 inch square cookies! And a small blue and white "medallion" of chocolate. It looked like a poker chip. And that was it! My birthday guest and I were both embarrassed.
So sad! What a great restaurant it could be!

"Delightful setting within the Modern Wing of the Art Institute of Chicago with views back to the city and over the Museum. Food was delicious with a wide choice on the menu. Review 29 for Terzo Piano

Overall Rating 1.0 out of 5 (Poor)
"Faster than Fast Food--that sums up my experience. While the food was good, I was rushed through a three course meal in 30 minutes. Fork down, away goes the plate, and the next course was on the table. With the first bite of dessert, the check is placed on the table. At least I was not presented with the main course while I was still eating my soup, as happened at a nearby table. Dining should be a fun, positive experience, and this was less fun than McDonalds."

Review 34 for Terzo Piano

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"Pretty high prices in a cafeteria setting. The four of us all chose the prix fixe and one bottle of wine (as modest as the wine list allowed) and the final tab was almost $300. Portions were extremely small and the lag time between the three courses was too long. Our waitress was apologetic and stressed. No one asked how our meal was or we would have shared our disappointment. Unsatisfying ending to a great evening at the Modern Wing of the Art Institute. I can't see any reason to recommend or ever return."

"Really disappointing food, expensive and tiny portions. Beautiful space, comfortable seating, decent service but still the feel of a sleek cafeteria. Went there for Valentine's Brunch with another couple and was embarrassed that I recommended it; went back (shame on me) for a "women's lunch" with 4 other friends from college and was embarrassed yet again. It's such a great tourist destination that the chef may want to recognize that his customers may be a broader mix than his Spiaggia clientele and adjust/expand the offerings accordingly."

Review 36 for Terzo Piano

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"what a setting! what disappointing food! the lukewarm potato/parsnip soup cried for pepper, but we were offered none. we were rushed. our waiter awkwardly placed our entree on the table next to our huge soup bowls "not to rush us, but just because it was ready." well, i never--- anyway, the ravioli dish was OVER SALTED. the chocolate dessert was frozen and would have been more "moussey" if it had been allowed to thaw. at the end of our dessert, we enjoyed the chocolatey fluffy texture more, as by then it was just beginning to defrost from its frozen "tv dinner-like" state. trying to share the microscopic happy birthday disc of white chocolate was laughable. and we needed a laugh at this point. a museum of this magnitude deserves better."

Review 38 for Terzo Piano

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"Loved the interior of the restaurant. I realize this sounds very midwest, but the portion size for the prix fixe was pathetic. I have been to five restaurants during restaurant week and pleasantly surprised that the portions were what was "normal" on the menu. Did the same last year and have returned numerous times to all of them.

Terzo, not so much. How much did you really save? Lost a customer -- and I have been to Chef Mantanuao's (sp?) other restaurants and like him.

Review 39 for Terzo Piano

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"This was a positive first experience at Terzo Piano. The food was a delicious selection of seasonable organic items like a potato parsnip soup and a delicious salad with roasted winter vegetables, candied pistachios, and feta. My companion had the butternut squash ravioli with crumbled sausage in a sage butter sauce. For dessert we shared a chocolate semi fredo and a butter scotch cake, both of which were yummy. We had a nice chardonnay to drink. Our server was good, but a little too friendly which frankly just gets annoying after a while. I appreciate good service, but am not there to make friends. I would reccomend this as a lovely spot to take out-of-towners or to the locals for an upscale lunch."

Review 42 for Terzo Piano

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Excellent Restaurant Week menu--look forward to trying other menu items some day. Very, very nice server, but the food was a bit slow to come out between courses. We also received our bread just minutes before our main course, rather than soon after sitting down. We were at a hi-top table and had a great view/table, but we were next to the server area and you could see the white counter/cabinets looked a bit worn out and had chipped/dented edges, which seemed very out of place for such a new, sleek modern restaurant. Overall, a great meal and experience and look forward to coming back. There is obviously a great chef behind the menu and great staff to back it up."

Review 47 for Terzo Piano

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"The taste of the food was wonderful The quantity for a man's appetite was not enough - even for lunch. Excellent chairs for sitting but the ambiance is too stark for my taste. I find it hard to believe that the downstairs restaurant with service would be replaced by this restaurant. The wine could also have been a little more generous. It was a very pricey lunch (especially when you consider the amount of tax) but an experience."

Review 49 for Terzo Piano

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"We went for restaurant week, because the restaurant week menu was limited to only one choice per course I was the only one who got it. The food was delicious, however the service was terrible. My dining partners all received their entrees before I did. When I didn't get mine I let the waitress know, and by the way she went over to the computer it appears she had never put it in. It then took her a couple minutes to come back to me when she told me it would be another 3 minutes. I had the restaurant week menu so I assumed that many of the entrees were being prepared at the same time, why couldn't she just have grabbed one and brought it right out. She was insincere and inattentive. In spite of service the meal was highly enjoyable"

"Food for the most part was creative and well presented. Had a problem with alot of grit in the clam dish and the server's response was 'it's shellfish' and mgt response was to throw three extra cookies in with the bill (which was over $100 for 3 people). The burger trio was quite good, the buttersquash ravioli had too much cardamon flavor and the sausage crumble was not very tasty. The desserts were outstanding."

Review 64 for Terzo Piano

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"Most of the food was quite good, and very original. However, the calamari was so peppery we couldn't eat it. We did like the potato/fennel soup, which somehow reminded us of a good leek soup - perhaps in texture. The whitefish (spread?) was really delicious; we ate it with the table bread rather than the pretty but unmanageable artisan flatbread that it came with.
Our server was lovely and knew her job well. The restaurant looked beautiful but the chairs were a bit uncomfortable. They are good if you are 20, thin, and over 5'6"; we are none of those things. Remember that most of the Art Institute's paying patrons are not poor thin young people.

Review 67 for Terzo Piano

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"This restaurant, located in the new modern wing of the Chicago Art Institute, only serves dinner on Thursday evening (it's primarily a lunch spot for museum visitors). Aesthetically, it resembles an upscale cafeteria, but the food belies the utilitarian appearance of the space. The appetizers were inventive and generous, and the main courses were perfectly prepared. Fresh local ingredients are prominently featured. The wine list is brief, but there are a number of good choices. There is a $45 prix fixe menu that looked quite interesting (although we opted for individual dishes), and the restaurant offers wine pairings for each course. Dessert was the only question mark -- the sage ice cream was not as compelling as the rest of the meal."

Review 75 for Terzo Piano

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)

Review 76 for Terzo Piano

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"We are not foodies, but we do dine out frequently. And we love this city. Terzo Piano is a really great place. A great place for a special occasion, or just to feel like you're on vacation, when your really not far from home. We thought the food was great, although slightly expensive (but who cares for a special occasion?) The views are spectacular.

Unfortunately the service leaves a lot to be desired. They were understaffed and untimely when we were there. Not impolite, but behind and not what we would describe as professional wait staff, like you'd find at a "Kinzie Chophouse" or "Nomi" for example. If they had that wait staff this place would be unbelievable!

Review 80 for Terzo Piano

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Very nice venue. Stopped by for a late dinner w/ friends. Gotta confirmations call 30 min prior to, which was also a nice reminder. Very friendly staff and service was great. Menu is simple, easy and well balanced. Prix fix menu for dinner but also items available ala carte. Nice range of wines btg or bottles. Food was delicious. Smallish portions but intense flavors and great preparation. Every dish was a surprise, starting w/ a delicious appetizer of micro-thin sliced meats and robust cheeses; simple baby arugula salad w/ cumquats; fantastic skatewing hovering over the creamy whipped cauliflower-parsnip puree. Light as a feather."

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"We have eaten in other art museum restaurants and expected this to be extra special as well. This lunch was not. While the food is excellent but pricey and wine by the glass very marked up , I had expected a more "high end Italian" experience..I was disappointed. "Our food was delicious and crative as well. The menu listed foods that I have never had in certain combinations. I had the Yuppie Egg Sandwich with creamy spinach. Review 86 for Terzo Piano

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"This is wonderful restaurant experience (3rd visit for me) - but the core menu is so meat centric that it's tough for a vegetarian to see many options at first glance. All three salads each contained meat (2 of which can be modified as vegetarian), and bread that contains pork fat are discouraging to non-meat eaters."

Review 87 for Terzo Piano

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"I big disappointment on a number of points. Far too much of the menu is at the high end, not surprising that the space is not fully utilized. (If you don't wish to spend a lot of money head for the dreary cafeteria in the basement at the other end of the museum). The food was ok but nothing to write home about. The waiter's attitude was an irritation, though food arrived in a timely fashion and he was around when needed. During the day the views are considerably underwhelming, perhaps better at nigh? The decor lacks the understated elegance one typically finds in a Piano building, unfortunately it's more like an over-chromed late fifties white Cadillac convertible."

"From the moment we walked in, from the hostess to the server ... everything was wonderful. Felt like THE place to be! Can't remember a better restaurant meal in a long while. Tried a few things: spaghetti squash flatbread with creamy mozzarella and basil (delicious); tempura battered perch & veggies with dipping sauce(amazing); pan fried trout with fingerling potatoes and brussel sprouts (to die for); and short-rib sandwich with fries (perfect for a cold winter day). My friend and I split everything. We each had 1 cocktail. Pricey but overall top-notch food, service and ambiance. We will go back. The new wing is fantastic. Great way to spend the day!!"

Review 98 for Terzo Piano

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"Blair Kamin at Chicago Trib said the panoramic view through the high-wide windows of the western exposure, facing Michigan Avenue Wall of skyscrapers, feels as though Superman will do a low-level pass at any moment, and he's right! The room has very high ceilings and difused light typical of the entire West Wing. For lunch we had sweet potato soup and prosciutto salad which were good but not exceptional. Service is good as is seating. Prices are reasonable. I gather walk-ins are okay if you don't mind waiting 10-15 minutues."

Review 102 for Terzo Piano

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"SCENIC VIEW? We asked for a table near a window. The request was not honored by the hostesses who could have cared less. Perhaps because there is no decent view, perhaps because of the poor architecture. Why the charm of previous locations has deteriorated to these cold environments with plastic chairs, etcetera. So, our SERVICE rating was not based on the waiters, who were excellent, but on the hostesses. Would we return? Only because it is the only place that is half-decent in the Art Institute (and the food IS excellent). The cafeteria is for school kids, and really unpleasant. Where are all the intelligent people and designers? Where is beauty these days? Not in the Art Institute dining areas."

"OK here it goes. Excellent service, great food taste and....nothing else. The food was superb but with half dollar size servings at premium prices, you have to wonder. It might be the “in” thing these days of, that’s right, recession, but I walked away with no sense of value. I understand that a Mercedes is fine dining but when your in an Art Institute mode of a day, be prepared for a Bentley meal. There were plenty of suits and hausfrau's there, but I was visiting the Art Institute and not on my companies expense account."

Review 107 for Terzo Piano

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"Service slow, not very attentive waitress. Beautiful decor far outclasses the food. The food was good - but not great. My wife's toast was burnt, which was noticed by a manager very quickly as she pushed it aside, but the replacement dish came slowly, as did the original.
Not a good choice of vegetarian dishes, but they were willing to adjust their salads by making them vegetarian.

Review 110 for Terzo Piano

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"View, interior design, decor, tableware all make for a terrific, bright lunchtime feel of being in an aerie, with a fabulous view onto Grant Park/Lake Michigan on one side, the Art Institute and Michigan Avenue on the other. And the food is excellent and right-sized portions. The potato-celery root soup was delicious, the trio of mini burgers inventive, fun, and delicious. The wait staff are very friendly and helpful. A great new lunch place in the Loop!"

Review 111 for Terzo Piano

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"My first time. We were meeting an old friend and wanted something special. We were to view the Caravaggio at the Museum so I checked the Museum website first to preview restaurants--and to make connections simple. The website picture almost put me off--it seemed so austere. But when I entered the restaurant, I found the atmosphere modern, with loads of simultaneously bright and warm light, a lovely contrast to the lush (equally interesting) darknesses of the Caravaggio exhibit. Though I found the menu pricey, fresh flavors and presentation overrode objections. Exquisite. Because of the high ceiling and hard surfaces, noise level is a bit sharp when the room is full--which it was. I was glad for our Open Table reservations--also a first."

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Food was really far better than it was at former Art Institute restaurants. Service was super. It is a nifty place to take out of town guests, even in winter.
They need more signs at street level to point to the correct elevator which is hidden off the coat check room.

Review 114 for Terzo Piano

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"The restaurant is delightful. It is bright with lots of windows, some facing the loop, others facing the lake. The view of the lake is not as unobstructed as I would have liked, but the view of the buildings in the loop is nice. The service was good, almost a little TOO good, too hasty for a group that just wanted to visit and talk. I had fresh trout with vegetables - very good."

Review 115 for Terzo Piano

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"I had a nice meal with good wine and a small dessert before spending the day in the museum, and I enjoyed it all very much. The spare, modern decor isn't to my taste, but it's all done in very good taste. I can appreciate the style and ambiance without particularly liking it. It's spendy for relatively small portions, but there's thought put into the ingredients and smaller meals are healthier anyway. It didn't knock my socks off, but overall it was a nice experience. I'd recommend it to a friend, especially as a precursor to a day at the Art Institute. Reservations on Open Table were easy and seamless."

Review 117 for Terzo Piano

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"With snow softly falling on Grant Park, the east-facing view from the "high" tables was lovely. My lamb ragout was the the perfect tummy warmer with a very reasonably priced Spanish red. The server was very helpful in suggesting the match. We arrived at 11:30 for an early lunch and it was packed by the time we left 90 minutes later. Make a reservation. Loved the lacey parmesan crisps too."

"I like this restaurant and the food is good, but if you would rather not spend $45 per person for a single glass of wine and a salad, don't eat here. Then again, there aren't really any good value options in this part of the city it's nice to indulge in a day at the Art Institute."

Review 123 for Terzo Piano

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"We knew that we were going to have a wonderful New Year's Eve lunch when we were warmly welcomed by the front desk staff. Our server was friendly and knowledgeable, and we liked that the tables were not on top of each other so conversation was easy. Our dishes -- a steak salad and the butternut squash ravioli with sage sausage, were both flavorful and subtle. Lastly, the spectacular view of the Michigan Ave skyline reminded me why I love Chicago! All in all, a marvelous special lunch experience."

Review 124 for Terzo Piano

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Wonderfully enjoyed. Did the family (5) thing, with 3 teenagers who have above average taste and experiences. Soup was well worth the adventure and every drop was something to squabble over. The appetizers cast an excellent pre-curser to our taste buds finished off by a series of must try dessert. While not in my top 10, exceeded my expectations and was worth the adventure for "museum food"."

Review 127 for Terzo Piano

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"Having dined enjoyably for many years at Art Institute restaurants, I was eagerly anticipating my experience at the new Terzo Piano. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed. The food was insufficient in quality and quantity, the squash ravioli with sausage was overwhelmingly salty and the Lake Superior Whitefish was prepared from a frozen fillet, like a fish stick. Refills of water were not offered or noticed until I asked for a refill. I do not plan on dining there again until there is a new chef."

Review 130 for Terzo Piano

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"Fantastic experience at Terzo Piano. The restaurant is beautiful, with an incredible view of downtown. We couldn't eat on the terrace, being January and all, but I'm sure it's incredible in the warmer months.

The food was excellent, with appropriate portions, and a beautiful presentation.

Our waitress was very friendly and helpful, but she seemed to have a rather larger number of tables, which made her presence pretty scarce before our lunch was served.

I've already recommended Terzo Piano to everyone I can, and will definitely be planning a return trip very soon!

"I was somewhat disappointed (but I went in with high expectations). The all-white decor is boring, the service was slow, and the portion size of most things was too large. Half the sandwich would have been ample. Ditto for the very delicious sweet potato chips. However, I congratulate them for using locally-available, sustainably-grown food. The Wisconsin short ribs were extremely tender and tasty. Wish I would have had room to try a dessert! Excellent wine choices."

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Set in a large white, open space at the top of the new Modern Wing, the restaurant buzzes with conversation and the back-and-forth of the too-busy servers. The menu is built around locally-sourced ingredients; everything looked interesting enough to try. An appetizer of fried perch was brought alive by an aioli sauce and a few fried lemon slices, a potato and celery root soup was amazingly creamy despite the total absence of cream. A selection of American cheeses was beautifully presented, but in stunningly small portions. The charcuterie was also quite good. The mini burgers were terrific; three different sliders made of different meats, with fries that were "eat just one more" delicious. Recommended, but don't expect speed."

Review 144 for Terzo Piano

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"A beautiful space in the new, modern wing of the Chicago Art Institute. The food was interesting, but short on flavor. The ravioli with chorizo was excellent. The California flatbread would have been a winner with a more flavorful base. The mizuni salad with chicken was good, but not great.Service was good, except for long wait time between courses. Server seemed to disappear to far reaches of the room, but support staff was pleasant and helpful.Overall a good experience. Pleasant dining in a nice setting. Probably a great experience when outdoor garden is open."

Review 146 for Terzo Piano

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"The Terzo Piano is a delicious break in a day-long visit to the Art Institute. The city appears to be a part of the restaurant thanks to the glass walls on three sides. The open concept dining room/bar was full of light on the overcast and chilly shortest day of the year. The wait staff were friendly and knowledgeable, service was timed extremely well even when the customer load started to increase towards capacity, and the food was a pleasure. The flavors were complex from the fresh mescalun salad to the homespun apple dessert, but I most appreciate the intelligent serving sizes. And thank you for serving EXCELLENT coffee to top off the meal. I look forward to returning soon and bringing friends and family to share the experience."

Review 147 for Terzo Piano

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Don't feel we can quite say "outstanding" for the food, but only because we're in Chicago where the bar is set so very high. Our lunch was excellent and relaxed. Service was unobtrusive, but everything seemed to get done efficiently, a real accomplishment anywhere. You will not be disappointed.

Terzo Piano is a good place to go when you want to get away from the office for a little bit. The architecture is a view in itself.

We will go often.

Review 150 for Terzo Piano

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"I rated the food only "good" because I found almost everything on the lunch menu was spicy and I can't eat spicy food. I thought I was safe ordering the roasted acorn squash & pear salad, but it turned out the dressing was so spicy I couldn't eat it, nor could I eat the walnuts. My companions don't have my problems with spicy foods and I'm sure they would rate their meals much higher.
Our server was polite, but as the room filled up and he got busier, his manner became rushed and a little impatient.

Review 153 for Terzo Piano

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"The food was overpriced and the service was unattentive and slow.
I would not reccomend for a complete dining experience. A good spot for flatbread and a glass of wine after a visit to the modern wing of the museum.

"the entree which was skatewing was very salty and not edible. may i suggest that the chef has to be very cognizant about the sodium content of each dishes because i for one has a high blood pressure condition and salt is of minimum per intake otherwise we had a nice time and the rest of the dishes were fine.

thank you,
sincerely,

"First time visit for dinner (only open on Thursday evenings) after matinee concert at Orchestra Hall. Very convenient location. Looking forward to try it for lunch."

Review 161 for Terzo Piano

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Friends and I enjoyed a great dinner there on a Thursday evening, which is the only night they serve dinner. The space is very contemporary -- sleek, monochromatic, with lots of straight lines and hard surfaces, the last of which contributes to some noise. There is a bar area which has both seating at the bar as well as small tables. The wine list is solid, although not very large. They also offer several interesting house cocktails. The menu changes each week and features regional items such as a Lake Erie Perch appetizer and brussel sprouts grown in southern Illinois. Each person in my party had a different appetizer and entre, and all were very good. Both presentation and preparation were great. Service was excellent. Recommend."
