"My partner and I went to Ristorante Massimo for the first time about a month ago and had the most wonderful, quiet, romantic and delicious dinner. We both unfortunately have dietary restrictions, and the waitstaff and chef were completely accommodating and gracious and more than happy to make a few substitutions. The food was TOP notch foodie grade food! :)"

"We arrived early and we had to wait for our table and the owner asked if we wanted a glass of wine while we waited. We accepted only to realize that he eventually charged us on our meal bill that shocked us as we expected that to be complimentary since he also new we were there because of my 65th birthday and our 42nd anniversary. Most fine restaurants would give you a free desert as well--they did not. There selection for food is limited but very good but I would not call this an Italian restaurant far from it. The service was very slow and the waitress delivered the wrong salad that my wife ordered because she had two other tables of 4 she was not attentive to us. Other couples came after us and left before us they had a different server"

"On a Tuesday nite, they had more customers than they had staff to handle. As a result, the service was decidedly mixed. It was not good that I had to ask the maitre d' to find our waiter so we could place our order. They tried hard to make up for their shortcomings that evening."

"Decent place, but EXTREMELY over-priced. It's definitely not worth what you pay. It's Portsmouth, NH, not a 5-star restaurant in downtown Manhattan. The tables are way too close to each other. I had to constantly move to let waiters by. Also, all they have to drink is wine and water. It was decent, but we won't be back. The prices are just too ridiculous. Very loud, too."

"Massimo's is our favorite restaurant in Naples for a special or semi- special dinner. The food is always excellent, service couldn't be better, and the setting is so grotto like and cozy- old stone and brick- this place oozes history. If Massimo is there, which he usually is, he makes you feel like you are family. Fives stars! There are great restaurants to choose from here and this is one of the best!"

"Went on a Wednesday evening for our anniversary on the recommendation of a friend who's a "regular." The food was outstanding, well-prepared and very flavorful. Service, however was spotty and largely inattentive - perhaps due to a large party in the private dining room. The owner did come to the table to appologize, which helped save the experience. "After hearing many great reviews about Massimo, we decided upon that. We made reservations for 8:30pm, which weren't ready when we got there. There was about a 10-15 minute wait past our reservation, but Massimo was very welcoming so the wait didn't bother us. Service was pretty slow for the time of night, and it took forever for someone to realize we never got menus. Our waitress was the saving grace of the service, she was so patient and accommodating to my pointing of things on the menu. The biggest downfall is that we had a reservation for two, but were seated at a table fit for 6 people and it was hard to carry a conversation at such a large table."

"The first time I dined here, I had a great experience. The food and service was phenomenal and I could not wait to return. I was very disappointed on 04/13 when I came for Portsmouth Restaurant Week. The food was bland. No flavor what-so-ever on the sirloin steak. The sauce had no taste either! One positive is that it was cooked perfectly medium rare. Our waitress did not remember my request for a side of lemon slices for my water...we had to remind another waiter 30 minutes later. Even then, he only brought 1 piece and it was an end piece with 2 drops of lemon juice in it! Although I had a sub-par experience this time, I am planning to give Ristorante Massimo another chance in the future...maybe it was just a bad night."

"A couple behind us were being served a special meal from the chef.There were four people catering to them, and our service was awful.We were not asked about a second cocktail or wine until half way through the meal.Our bread and appitizer plates were not removed until dinner was served.My coffee did not come until after we finished desert,(I sent it back when served).Parts of my wife's meal was cool not hot as it should have been.I didn't send it back because I didn't want wait all night."

"I love the food at this restaurant, but I must say that this restaurant week menu was not our favorite. Smaller portions and the Gnocchi Bolognese was dissappointing. The Pasta can Ganberetti was light and favorful as was the Anatra can Ciliegie. The Capesante con Risotto, could have used another Scallop, but it was absolutely delicious. Torta all cioccolata was not one of my favorite desserts that we have had here. We will be back but I'm not sure that the restaurant week menu was a great value."

"A group of us were at Ristorante Massimo's on Saturday, 04/06/13 to celebrate my husband's 50th birthday. This is one of our favorite restaurants in Portsmouth so it seemed like a obvious choice. We were promtly greeted by Massimo himself and felt very welcomed. We were seated in a small room which was very nice and quiet and above all we were able to speak to one another without shouting over any noise. The food was tasty to say the least and enjoyed by all. The service was outstanding and overall our dining experience was 5 star. Would certainly recommend and am looking forward to returning again soon."

"This was the first time I have ever been to Ristorante Massimo and I was pleasantly surprised. The table we were seated at was tucked away in a little brick alcove in the basement dining room, and I loved the feeling of the old building all around us. The waitstaff was very friendly and personable, and gave excellent advice on the dishes and wine. The food itself was masterfully prepared, and the wine list was extensive, although the bottle selection was far more varied than the by-the-glass selection. I found the decor and the general ambiance to err slightly towards the tacky side, but the quality of everything really made up for it. This is a fantastic special-occasion restaurant, and I will make sure to return."

"Although under new ownership the restaurant appeared the same. Service was unobtrusive but prompt. A nice feature is the smaller or larger portion sizes for some dishes which definitely expands the menu options. I ordered the braised beef as an appetizer, the sauce was overpowering of the rest of the components and just too strong. The main was the lobster which was as described but really not special. We enjoyed the evening but would probably not rush back."

"The food, service and abimance were fantastic. Our server was wonderful, she really new her menu and wine list and made great recommendations. The owner Massimo truly knows his stuff. He is very visible and strives for perfection. I would highly recommend this restaurant . You will not be disappointed!"

"I was a little disappointed with the fare as the starter a fried breaded eggplant was drowned by the lemon marmalade which overpowered the delicate taste of the flesh. The carbonara had a bitter aftertaste and the pasta was somewhat glutinous and a tad al dante for my taste. The biggest miss was the treatment we received by the owner / (maitre d?) who showered everyone with a generous portion of warmth and friendliness whereas we were left feeling like we were poor cousins. I cannot understand why, we were respectful, well dressed and booked in advance for the Valentine meal and were looking forward to the evening. The waiting staff were both friendly and informative albeit too familiar for my taste."
