The Heathman Restaurant is located in the heart of downtown Portland and in the midst of the city’s theatre district.
Executive Chef Michael Stanton uses the very best in seafood, steaks, game, and more: from line caught salmon to organically raised lamb….from heirloom tomatoes to the best berries and fruit available in the Willamette Valley. The Heathman Restaurant takes advantage of local bay shrimp and Oregon razor clams when they are at the peak of season, they use mushrooms unearthed and brought to the kitchen early each morning. "It's no surprise that this restaurant has excellent food but the prices make it a special occasion restaurant for us. The prices were high and the amount of food provided slim. Even with a $10 off coupon our dinner for two came to almost $70 (and we ordered some of the least expensive items on the dinner menu.) Salads, starches such as potatoes, etc. are all extra. Also, their dinner menu changes daily. When I checked it one day the menu looked terrific, but on the night of our reservation the dinner menu, while varied, were not as appealing. Very convenient if you are attending the symphony next door, however."

"Perfectly prepared, seasonal food in a comfortable and convenient setting. The service is almost always impeccable and friendly. Our recent lunch was the one exception we had regarding service, and there were probably reasons for it, but mostly I think it was our server."

"The Heathman Restaurant is a great place to catch dinner before a show a the Schnitz or Performing Arts Center! Food is excellent, beautiful presentation, good wine list. Allow yourself time to enjoy the meal. Portions are not large, although delectable, so if you are feeling really hungry a starter with the entree is recommended. Can be noisy on show evenings. Even though it was a busy night, the food was served in a timely manner and the waiter made good recommendations to meet our time restraints."

"I took my Mother and the whole family here for Mother's Day Sunday brunch. The food was fantastic and the service was out of this world. Next year I have a feeling I will be here again for another great meal. I especially loved my Crab eggs Benedict and I know that everyone else in the family was happy with their own personal choices; the corned beef hash as well.
So, I give it a personal A and I suggest to anyone and everyone in the Portland area to try it if they haven't already."

"We came back after eating at the Heathman two years ago. At that time I had the lemon poppyseed pancakes which were outstanding. This time when I had them, all I could taste was the griddle and no lemon whatsoever. I could see there was lemon zest in the pancake, but it didn't have any lemon taste. I was hugely disappointed. Two years ago we had also eaten a wonderful steak dinner at the Heathman. This time around though it seemed like prices went up and the appetizer menu was heavy on organ meat (pate, sweet breads, lamb tongue). Not our thing so we passed. The service was wonderful and had I not been in a hurry to leave, I would have sent the pancakes back. However I am not sure if we will eat there the next time we come to town."

"Mother's Day can lead to some really bad restaurant food. Trying to serve hordes of "mother-won't-have-to-cook-today" families, many restaurants serve heaps of lukewarm buffet table entrees and aged dry pastries to quickly churn their tables. NOT SO at the Heathman. We had a lovely table in the quiet lobby dining room. The food was cooked to order and delicious. The service was impeccable. Well done!"

"Had a lovely breakfast on Sunday with many family members in town. The food was terrific & the service was attentive. Everything we ate was delicious! My daughter was initially disappointed that they didn't have any croissants, but eagerly gobbled the Berliners that the waiter recommended. Loved our meal, and out of town family was impressed. We will be back!"

My wife, a friend, and I were all disappointed with the food, primarily because it lacked character. The butter leaf salad was ok, but lacked any interest. The halibut was dry. The salmon was good but very simple: salmon on a very small pile of greens. The beat salad was good. At a restaurant of this quality, we expect interesting food, flavors, and presentation--all of which we have experienced in the past, but not this time."

"I have dined at the Heathman Restaurant for years, but have been living abroad since 2006. I was recently in Portland on a visit and treated my extended family to brunch there on a Sunday. The food was flawless, the service was impeccable, and we all had a totally wonderful time. Their was not a misstep in the entire meal. I was so pleased to see that the same high quality has been maintained. What a totally lovely place to experience Portland dining at its very best."

"The annual Easter Sunday buffet has continued downhill at the Heathman. This year, the food was exceptionally poor, with no attempt to refill items as they ran out. Meats were overcooked, seafood was unappetizing, salmon tray was empty and dumped in the ice display and virtually everything was either stale or unappetizing. The coffee, however, was very good. The wait for a fixed time reservation was the usual fifteen to twenty minutes beyond reservation time. Service required another ten to fifteen minute wait and provided no value. A real disappointment. We will find another alternative next year."

"I don't often enjoy every last bite of a restaurant meal, but our dinner at the Heathman was a fantastic exception. The service, food and wine were perfect and the ambience just right. It is certainly a place I would recommend to others and hope I can enjoy another dinner there myself. Wonderful evening!"

"The Heathman has always been a favorite but lately it has disappointed us. In my opinion it is a bit overpriced. Mixed drinks are weak and priced at $11.00 and up, depending on what you ask for. Portions are smaller and more expensive then in the past.
Do not sit near the kitchen otherwise the incessant barking of orders between chefs will mar your dinner experience."

"Value Change - One of the things we look for in a restaurant is consistency. We noticed an immediate change when the bread plate had 4 little slices, the beet salad was noticeably small, as were the entrees. Actually the entrees were now appropriately sized, just changed from the past with the same prices.
For the second time the bottle of wine I took would have been taken away the table for opening except, that I requested it be opened at the table.
Having enjoyed this restaurant many times, the changes were disappointing."

"Made reservations for an out of town client based on the reviews. It took 20 minutes from the time we were seated to get a server. That was only after asking a busboy to find someone to take our order. Then it took another half hour until we received our food. The waitress did apologize but after asking for a refill on a coke, we never came. The food was very good but the service was not acceptable."

"On a very short break, with only one dinner in Portland, we opted to return to the Heathman despite all the many options available to us. The menu really 'spoke' to us - both of us were able to partake in dishes we adore (sweetbreads and venison) along with the usual excellent cheese selection and broad wine list. A hard choice between several enticing, seasonal appies.
One of our cocktails was disappointing, but it was quickly removed and replaced with another; recommended wines to accompany our entrees were solid; server (Anna) was knowledgeable and attentive without hovering; and Chef Stanton was good enough to pop by for a chat about some of the dishes.
All in all, a memorable meal - we will definitely return again."

"I have always enjoyed the Heathman but the food isn't what it was even a year ago. I certainly wouldn't recommend it as a good spot for dining. I go back because it is convenient but I'm not sure the convenience is even a draw after three disappointing meals."

"A most enjoyable lunch. The Heathman experience is a must do!! From the receptionist to the wait staff the entire lunch was unforgetable. Now the food--such variety and taste sensations!! Each dish was so delicious, not overdone, not skimpy, not screaming "taste the spice". Just flavors so individual you could distinguish each one. The French onion soup was by far the best I've ever had, including my own. Barley salad with marinated grilled prawns so right on and of course a trio of Pot a Creme au chololate!!! Each of the 3 so individual and the dark chocolate had a hit of sea salt that was right on."
