"Enormous, beautiful, and elegant-trendy restaurant! Service was outstanding... our server was very attentive and always had a smile on her face! Definitely one of my top 3 favorite restaurants in New York City. Definitely do the rock shrimp for appetizer, and the kobe beef for entree (what a presentation!)."

"THIS WAS OUR FIRST VISIT TO MEGU WHICH IS A HUGE RESTAURANT - DON'T EXPECT A TRADITIONAL JAPANESE ATMOSPHERE - IT WAS NOISY WITH LOUD JAZZ MUSIC PLAYING WHICH MY HUSBAND AND I FOUND STRANGE. THE FOOD,A MODERN TAKE ON JAPANESE, WAS VERY GOOD AND THE PRESENTATION EXCELLENT. HOWEVER, BEWARE, THE BEERS ARE EXTORTIONATE, EVEN THE LOCAL BEERS, WINES ARE VERY EXPENSIVE BUT THAT IS TO BE EXPECTED - THE BILL FOR TWO WITH TWO BEERS, ONE VODKA, WATER CAME TO A LITTLE OVER £150 - NOT ESPECIALLY GOOD VALUE AND WE HAVE BEEN TO BETTER JAPANESE RESTAURANTS IN LONDON THAT ARE CHEAPER - WOULD WE GO BACK, NO I DON'T THINK SO"

"My new favorite for sure. Beautiful, trendy, delicious. The ambiance was wonderful, the food incredible, and the presentation superb. The menu has so much on it that it can seem a bit overwhelming. Even picking a drink is a daunting task considering they have separate menus for wine, beer, sake, and cocktails. I highly recommend the lychee martini and blue fin carpaccio appetizer. The Kobe skewer tasting and Kobe filet mignon were also incredible. Our server could have been a bit more helpful in choosing from the menu, but he was prompt and fairly attentive.
Prices are VERY high, but it was worth it in my opinion. Not an every day thing, but a great destination for a special occasion"

"Average at best. While a beautiful restaurant there wasn't anything distinguishing about the menu. We had a broad selection of dishes and were really underwhelmed. Our waitress was inattentive and forgetful - quite suprising in a restaurant that wants to compete with the top tier of NY and was half full. Dissapointing"

"The Ambiance was very new to me figuring that this is the first time I heard of the restaurant. The food presentation was very good. I did not want to eat it because of the way the food was laid out on the plate. The service was great and the staff was very attentive to our needs. Just a footnote, do expect to dress a little better for if you are to dine here"

"The ambiance of Megu was unique and interesting and accentuated our view and discussion during dinner. Service was great as many waiters kept an eye on the table to ask if needed anything and to clean up empty dishes. I ordered the Sushi/Sashimi which was a fresh piece of fish and my girlfriend got the Kobe beef served on a rock, which was a great presentation.
If you are looking for a moderately priced dinner and a ton of food, this is not the place for you. Prices and food are what you would except at a casual upscale Japanese restaurant in NYC: a small quantity of food for a large quantity of cash. Not the best food I've ever head, but I was not unhappy with the splurge as it was good food."

"Great food and service. Prix fixe menu highly recommended.
Unfortunately, this restaurant is frequented by patrons that have more money than class. They make a loud scene, are rude to the staff, and often manage to ruin the otherwise cheerful ambiance. We had the misfortune to be seated next to such a party for the second time."

"Went for Restaurant Week. The RW menu selection was excellent and the food was superb. Decor was modern and since it was a large space, the seating was very comfortable. I will definitely come back either for a special occasion dining, or for Restaurant Week again."

"I would say the ambience and presentation were off the charts. The food was good, but not as great as you might expect considering the prices. And the service was OK for the most part, except for the fact that they messed up bringing us Edamame until after we had received our first dish, they didn't replace my glass of champagne that I accidently spilled but instead charged me for another without telling me they would, and they brought out a second sushi platter by accident after we had already ate ours. It's a good choice for the "cool factor" and the ice statue and all that, but not if you want great food."

"While the food did taste good, and the ambiance was quite impressive (especially on Valentine's Day), it took us 4.5 hours to get all 8 items on our $125 tasting menu. I normally wouldnt mind taking that long for a meal, but when a very small portion comes out, is consumed within 2 minutes, and then there is a 30-45 minute wait for the next small portion, this did not really feel like a meal, and certainly was not worth the $380 total (which didnt even include a bottle of wine - just 2 tasting menus, 3 drinks total, tax and tip). Overall, I would recommend avoiding this place. You can find similar atmosphere elsewhere at a much more reasonable price, and with much better food."

"I ordered the chef selection special and every dish came out was great except their spicy crispy shrimp which is nothing special than regular fried shrimp. Kobe beef was definitely tender and beyond delicious. The ambiance is very modern and romantic setting. Price is a little above the norm but it is worth it. Although, they could be a little more generous with their shochu drink since it cost about $10 per glass. Except it was more like a shot than a glass of shochu."

"The tasting menu with a flight of wines offered a gastronomic treat; bleamished only my the over eager and sometimes instrusive waitstaff. It's great to be waitied on, but not at the expensive of disrupting table conversation to remind us that we are being waited upon. We felt rushed because they brought the wine before the approprate course instead of with the course, but the pairings were excellant, as were all eight courses. The Kobe beef is wonderful!"

"This was our second trip to the Tribeca Megu. This restaurant is phenomenal. The food is exquisite and the atmosphere was comfortable. Some places cram you in like sardines, but the seating was relatively private for such a popular place. I can't believe this restaurant is not rated my Michelin. It deserves at least 2. I will be back as soon as possible. They need to open one in Vegas, too. It's very hip and I can't think of anything bad to say about it."

"The restaurant was amazing. I went with my boyfriend for Valentine's Day and it was time well spent. The service was a little slow but I guess you should expect it on a day like that, they should have had a few more workers then, and because it was packed it was very noisy and we almost had to yell across the table to each other. Also, the seating arrangement was too close, we heard everyone's conversations from all sides. Other than that, the food was delicious, both the Kobe beef and chicken. I loved it and would with out a doubt come back again!"

"I will start saying that this was the most sophisticated and vibrant japanese restaurant I've ever been. I'm from Sao Paulo, Brazil, and in some neighborhoods there are literally one japanese restaurant in every corner. And there are some very, very good japanese restaurants in Brazil. But this restaurant managed to impress me. They have such a great variety of food in their menu and everything seemed to be great to me. I had a marvelous crispy shrimp for entrance and simply the best kobe beef I ever had for main course. We also asked for a pairing sake which matched perfectly with our dishes. The bottom line is that this is an impeccable japanese restaurant and would certainly recommend to everyone."

"I attended for restaurant week with 3 friends. The food was good. I had the shrimp as an appetizer & it was good but nothign out of this world. For entree- The Kobe beef melted in my mouth & the presentation was impressive. For dessert we had the NY cheesecake choice which was good but nothing out of this world. Everything tasted good. So I say it's good but since the Kobe was amazing, I rate the overall very good. Atmosphere- friendly, service is polite & well poised, lighting dim, noise level- you have to be a foot and a half away to hear your guests. I really enjoyed the traditional welcoming motto "I-ra-shai-mase" It's inviting. The welcoming & Kobe were my highlights."

"The food was very well executed and creative; not the best, but good. The wine and Sake list is extensive and impressive. Great decor and ambiance, but the price is a little over inflated given the hype. Dessert is awful, seemed like it came from Costco. The service was fair but seemed understaffed, and lacked any personal attention."

"The service from entry to finale was impeccable! the actual restaurant itself is stunning in terms of decor and not gaudy at all. the food was wonderful, and what topped it all off was the beer, wine, and sake pairings from low to mid twenties. the dessert i found could be better in terms of the chocolate cake, the cheesecake was great. i will definitely come here again for the kobe sashimi."

"Decor was nice with a water sculpture which was great for pictures. Layout was a bit tight with the tables but very comfortable.
I had reservations but still had to wait 15 mins past my reservation time to get a table. Also upon being escorted to my table, they were not sure which table I should have been sitting at. Then once seated, no one attended to be for about 10 minutes, then finally a menu.
However, other then timely issues the food and service was great once things begn to roll. I had to get my servers attention each time because we were not checked on from time to time, but it was good service all in all.
Great food, especially the Kobe w/Henessey"

"We went for the restaurant week menu. The food was beautiful for your eyes and delicious for your mouth. However, the portion for the main dish is a little bit small. (If you love rice, you would not feel hungry with the bowl of rice though.)
The seatings downstairs are decorated beautifully, but the seatings upstairs, in the middle part of the restaurant, have the whole view. Would love to try the special evening events next time."

"the food was very average, there are far better japanese restaurants in the neighborhood and the city. the sushi rolls, in particular, were excruciatingly salty. this restaurant is fit for out of towners who are looking for a showy destination dining experience. the food serving staff was fantastic. the hostess staff, not so much. on a sub-freezing temperature night, they seated us directly under an air vent which we later learned from another staff member was directly exposed to the outside air! we asked to move one table over which was obliged-though still very cold-and cautioned the hostess that nobody would be happy there. she pertly replied that some people like the cold. the next two parties seated there demanded new tables asap"

"Restaurant Week: Absolutely delicious and warm, friendly service. It took a bit to get seated but drinks at the bar while waiting were phenomenal. "The restaurant is a bit overwhelming at first... the entry is small, but then they take you down to the dining area, which is huge and dominated by this giant bell. It's a pretty cool place, but the regular menu is expensive. We went to Megu for restaurant week and it was worth it. For appetizers, we had the scallops and fried shrimp. For main course, we had the Kobe steak and cod. Then for dessert, we had the NY Cheesecake and the chocolate cake. Pass on the chocolate cake... it was boring.
Overall, the restaurant was good, but not great. Probably won't go back unless its restaurant week."

"We had a wonderful experience at Megu, after a very disappointing Restaurant Week experience at Lupa. The restaurant was packed with Restaurant Week diners and for good reason. Megu allowed you to combine the RW set menu with a la carte items from the regular menu (which we did!) In addition, Megu included their BEST dishes (kobe beef) on the RW menu. While the servers were spread thin because every table was full and everyone was ordering from the same menu and expecting their second and third courses at the same time, the managers were circulating and catering to every customer's needs. I will definitely take my family back for another meal at Megu!!"

Beautiful place to eat, amazing hostess, and busser . But overall amazing place to eat, go for a drink. We also had a cocktail before our meal and I had a cocktail with pineapple juice, sparkling sake, and bacardi which was one of the best cocktails I have ever had, and my boyfriend had the Ginger cocktail which he really loved as well. "While the food was very good, I don't think I would have gone if it hadn't been for the Restaurant Week specials, based on the high prices. The hostess forgot about us and when we inquired if our table would come up 35 minutes after our arrival, she was very condescending rather than apologetic, and immediately after that we were seated (miraculously a table opened up at the exact time we asked her about it!?). THe bartenders were also useless, but maybe it's because it was a Wednesday night. But our waiter was great!"

As your guided through a hallway, down the stairs to a large, high ceiling dining room with an ice buddha, made the dining experience all that much better. "I went during restaurant week, so you always have to expect the food to be a notch or two below the regular menu.
The appetizers were all good, albeit small, but at a place like this that's what you would expect.
The mains were all pretty good, the coolest being the steak that they bring out on a rock that is so hot it is actually cooking the steak. Pretty cool, kobe steak was pretty good, but didn't knock my socks off.
Dessert was dessert, chocolate cake and cheesecake, don't even know if they were made there or bought at the deli down the street. Again, restaurant week.
The overall look of the place is pretty awesome. From the Ice Buddha in the middle of the room to all the patterned walls. The bar is a nice place for a drink"

My friends took the Kobe stake, now, not only was this stake mediocre, it was nothing like a good Kobe steak (and we ate Kobe steak at Kobe, Japan) - so we were really disappointant with that entree. "This review comes immediately after a single dinner during restaurant week. It is always difficult to judge a restaurant based on one experience but I deem it important to report the evident flaws and limits of the restaurant here: 1) Megu is one of these businesses which have clearly chosen to consider restaurant week cheaply, serving downgraded quality for the prix-fixe and to treat dinners who want to discover the variety of NYC food scene with very little respect. It is clearly not using the opportunity of Restaurant week for self promotion and fails to give any desire for new patrons to come back. 2) Pre-appetizers: we ordered some sushi in addition to our prix-fixe menu to start our meal: Fine, interesting, high quality spicy Tuna"

"We went for Restaurant week. The Kobe Beef entree was very tasty & fun with fire (ooh ahhh) but I must admit that the scallop appetizer I ordered came to the table luke warm and slightly overcooked. It was as though they had cooked it & put it under a heat lamp... the flavors, however, were decent. The New York cheesecake was average at best. They neither put an interesting sauce on it nor made it look good. It was disappointing to say the least. My friend had the Sushi that she said was about as good as Avenue A Sushi in Village (and Avenue A is decent sushi... just one would expect to be blown away by Megu and we were not. All in all if you go get a beef entree and skip dessert.
The service was horrific."

"My husband and I dined here during restaurant week, which helped make the evening more affordable.
The decor is spectacular, but, the service left a lot to be desired. I ordered a la carte, while my husband ordered from the 3-course restaurant week menu. My choices were all brought before my husband's first dish ever even arrived. Staff was quick to perform their planned theatrics but failed on the most basic tasks (trying to remove my husband's appetizer while it was only half-eaten, not explaining what sushi the chef had prepared).
Some of the food was very good - kobe beef and snapper oriental salad - while some (salmon tartare) fell short of the high price tags.
Would not return at full prices."

Review 82 for Megu
Overall Rating
(Very Good)
"Great ambiance, impeccable attention to detail. Service was a tad tiny slow, but you are enjoying your surroundings so you don't notice as much. Food was very good, but nothing spectacular and out of the ordinary. (Though we went during restaurant week so this MAY not be a reflection on their regular menu). Would definitely go again if I wanted to spend a large amount of money on a special occasion. Entrees do not come with sides so you are looking at about $80 a person for food, appetizers, dessert and drinks. Worth the experience."

"Service was terrible. They constantly delivered wrong dishes to our table, in apparent mix-up with neighboring tables. The waiter who took our order was OK, but the guys who brought out the food were just some guys from the kitchen. After a while, we didn't bother complaining. We just ate the wrong dessert dishes they gave us. No training whatsoever. They need to focus on improving service."

"We went to Megu during restaurant week and was so disappointed. First og all, the restaurant was freezing cold. We just had to get the check during out dessert, because we couldn't take it anymore. We bought a wine paring with our meal, and even though we paid full prize for the wine glasses, they only gave us a taste. The service was poor, we had about 10 different waiters coming to our table during our meal. Stay away from this place if you can!"

"Bad service, the food was mediocre and overly expensive. The waiters attempt to memorize your order instead of writing it down and got the order wrong every time. Did not get seated until 40 minutes after arriving. The restaurant's acoustics made it very noisy. The food was ok but no where near the quality they are charging for. There are much better and cheaper Japanese restaurants in NYC who take the food, instead of themselves, more seriously. Epic Fail."

"We went on Friday during Restaurant Week at 7:15p. Food was execellent. It was early, attentive service at first, then forgot us when it got busy - servers brought other table food as we waited for our entree, then rush out after dessert. Dim lighting & fine print menus, either provide more lights, bigger print menus or bring a flashlight. Servers needed help with dishes - almost dropped the 4 plates of hot rock on us! Overall, Megu needs improvement on service coordination and would go back/recommend the food!"

"I love Megu!! This was my second time at Megu, both during Restaurant Week. Each time, we've gotten there a little early to allow time for a cocktail in the lounge upstairs... the lounge is very trendy and plush. The ambiance in the dining room downstairs is beautiful. There is a large Buddha ice sculpture surrounded by rose petals in a fountain in the middle of the room. The portions were extremely small, as expected during restaurant week, but delicious! I got the scallop appetizer (2 perfect scallops), cod entree (tasty, but tiny), and chocolate cake (a sliver of goodness, but a bit dry). We anticipated small portions, so had ordered a few extra appetizers off the regular menu.. so we left feeling full. Had a great experience!"

"The food was good, but my friends and I had a disappointing experience. The wine there was watered-down (it was rectified, but being served watered-down wine at an expensive restaurant should NEVER happen). Also, we were charged for bottled water and additional desserts (which were not ordered). Something like that should never happen at any restaurant, particularly at an expensive and reputable restaurant like Megu. I liked the food at Megu (I have been there before and I really liked it in the past), but the problems with the wine and check ruined the dining experience. I will not return again."

"I went for Restaurant Week with a friend, both of us love sushi. We were tempted by all the fabulous items on the menu, but we stuck to the RW menu for this visit. The sushi selection was tasty, even the roll (I enjoyed that one more than my friend). The atmosphere is great here, definitely a nice night out, not too stuff but the right amount of ambiance for a special occasion. The ice buddha sculpture in the middle of the dining room was pretty cool too. Definitely worth going again, I want to try the kobe beef on the stone. The presentation of the food was beautiful, and searing the red snapper on the salad in front of us was showy yet enjoyable. The service was fine, not spectacular."

"I came to test the food and the service during the restaurant week. Service is great. Food is ok. I got Kobe beef, that I could barely chew. The slices, displayed decoratively on the hot stone, were too large to put in my mouth, and too thickly cut to bite on. My dining companion had sushi and it was "good". Not outstanding. We had a sample of Sake pairings, and a sample of beer pairings. Different sake tastes were actually surprisingly good. The desert was great! we had a chocolate cake which was delicious and a cream cheese cake which was also delicious and the slice was so thin I barely had enough to have a taste of it. Room decor is outstanding and making a wish with the melting ice budda is romantic. Got too noisy by about 7pm."

"Megu was a nice experience. I went for restaurant week and it seems they seated everyone eating restaurant week in the bar area whereas the "normal" diners were in a completely seperate part of the restaurant, downstairs. The bar area was very noisy mostly due to the trance/club music they were playing. I didn't go downstairs but the other part of Megu seemed more peaceful and relaxing(decor and all). The food was pretty good I was really hungry still when I left after paying upwards of $50 dollars for dinner, but thats what Fine dining is all about I guess."

"Went for an 8:30 table for 2 on a Wednesday evening, for Winter Restaurant Week. The food was great, including an amuse-bouche of sesame cracker with cream cheese and black truffle, a simple yet unbelievable fried shrimp dish, and a fun kobe beef served on a hot stone with flaming cognac poured over the top. Recommended for restaurant week, and I'm sure it's great otherwise (though the prices are very high). Extra special was the sake menu, with detailed descriptions of each brand."

"We had the Restaurant Week menu, which was very good. A good selection to choose from, and all were happy. The Kobe beef was very flavorful and beautifully presented (though a bit tough - obviously, the masseuse did not give full treatment to the cut of beef we had); nonetheless, still very good. The Snapper salad appetizer was beautifully presented and delicious.
The only negative was at the Bar, before dinner. After waiting 15 minutes, just to be ignored, we were still not able to get served before we were seated for dinner. The Bar wasn't even that crowded, but was poorly served by a young barman with little interest in serving the customers. The drinks with dinner were fine."

"We went here for restaurant week. We were sat at what had to be the worst table in the restaurant with our backs to the rest of the room, facing the waiter station, and exactly where the hostess shouts her greeting every time she comes down the stairs. The shrimp appetizer and the cod entree were mediocre at best. Our waiter hovered uncomfortably and made it obvious that he wanted to turn our table as fast as possible. It worked--with three courses and a $150 bill for two, we were rushed out the door in under 50 minutes. This place might be worth a try if you are ordering off of the regular menu, but I would not recommend it for restaurant week."

It was indeed delectable as was the sushi(eel and advocado and the spicy tuna) the boulaibaisse soup, the fried asparagus, the spinach, the parmesan fries and the parmesan lobster. Oh let's not forget the signature drink called, "Blessings". You have not dined until you have eaten at Megu. It was an experience that I will never forget. It was worth every cent!!!!!!!!!!"

"I spent New Year's Eve at Megu. Ambiance was perfect for the occasion, design is trendy but not formal. Prix Fixe option was very good, presentation creative, however it took forever to get to our table. As a result we were having dessert at around 2AM when the restaurant was almost empty and they were starting to clean up. Also they forgot an extra item we ordered a la carte. Overall, it was a good experience and I would go back for a regular dinner."

"The food is exquisite. We had the tasting menu which let us try a little bit of everything, and we like almost everyone of them, especially the crispy asparagus, the oriental salad, and of course the steak, so tender and juicy.
We got excellent seat right by the ice Buddha, and our waiter is very very polite, helpful and knowledgeable. We will definitely visit again."

"The food was artistic, not filling, but the seafood was very fresh!! The portions are very small, but created beautifully. The quality and variety is on par with Nobu, however, the cooked dishes does not compare. I would recommend going one time to see the ambiance, enjoy the food, style, etc. but going again would be redundant. The service, expertise of staff needs improvement. The waiter does not know how to serve without crossing entirely in front of the patron while serviing saki or even bringing out plates of food. Cutting entirely in front of guests in the middle of conversation. Also, the food servers need to be able to at least speak comprehensible English, and not speaking a mile a minute while explaining the dish."

"The ambiance and service were superb. The sushi was very good. Waiter was notified it was my wife birthday and brought cheesecake with a candle. That was a nice touch. If you're looking for that personalized service and cool ambiance this it, but if you want an equally good meal you can find about $50 cheaper elsewhere in NY."

"My previous Megu experiece was a modest solo visit. This time, my friend & I opted for the omakase dinner which was exquisite in every way, although the time between courses was over-long and determined, we decided, on the pressures of the kitchen, rather than the proper interval between them. It's known that Thursday night is the new Friday night, and the filled tables attested to that. The noise level was more than energetic; it was so loud that we asked the maitre d', Shawn (Sean?) to kindly seat us in a booth, which he graciously did, allowing us to enjoy calm conversation, in what otherwise would have been a shouting match and not at consonant with the shibui meal. I'll be back, but when it is quieter."

"Pretentious service. False atmosphere. Food was alright but way too pricey for what it was ($25 for one tuna skewer !!). Will not come back as there are many other places in Manhattan with similar very good food asian-inspired food without the exorbitant price tag and false service. Despite our asking for a nice table (it was my wife's birthday) and some central booths being obviously available, they didnt offer the best available table. I had to beg twice before getting a decent seating. Just pretentious from A to Z."

"This restaurant has a good kitchen (great food), the service however need quite some improvement. The waiter was not familiar with the wine list and the order of dishes (fixed menu). We were kept waiting for hours before we received any of our meals. It was windy and cold. Not a great experience. There is a lot of personnel running around but there is a lack of structure or organization. In short; good kitchen, lousy delivery/service."

"Megu serves a wide variety of modern Sushi. Their signature dish is the Kobe beef, served on a hot river stone with Hennessy flambe. In my opinion the food was good, but not outstanding, maybe they concentrate too much on fancy food presentation instead of flavor. But it was a good experience and the Kobe beef was perfectly cooked, it melted in your mouth and had a very deep and rich flavor."

"What really stands out about this place is the service...how bad it was. While the room is nice, and the food is palatable(just have some kobe and nigiri), it's the glib and shallow waitstaff that sack my rating of this joint. They think their services is good because they've been told that Megu is a great place, but sadly, they don't really know -- for themselves -- if it is good or bad. The end result is a sloppy performance with so-so dishes in a visually striking cave.
If ya really gotta go...just order sushi a la carte."

"Megu is a stuning restaurant with outstanding food, faultless service, outstanding cocktails and a lengthy sake list. The Megu special asparagus skewers were crunchy and delicious, the paper wrapped cold sweet, moist and moreish, only the tuna tataki wasn't something to write home about. It's pricey - three courses with sake and service came to about $300 - but if you've got something to celebrate, want to impress or just love your food enough to spend that kind of money, it's worth every cent."

"From the moment I entered the dining room and the maitre d' shouted something like "irashimasu" to alert staff that some important guest was arriving, to the exquisite food, I was entranced. Impeccable, delectable, every morsel worth savoring. Service was attentive without being overbearing or fussy. As a single diner I was treated with as much respect as the party of four next to me, which is not usually the case. The dining room is focussed around a clear glass Buddha, with an antique temple bell hanging over it. A treat for the eyes, the tastebuds and the soul."
