"The reputation and past reviews motivated us to try this for our 2nd anniversary. Needless to say, we were not impressed. We wanted to be, but we were put off by the steep prices, minuscule portions, and decor...(plastic chairs?? Really?) There are far too many sushi houses that are better, cheaper, and trendier. We should not have to pay such a premium for the name."

"My sister and I told our server, Christina (who was great), to bring the chef's choice for us. Each plate that was set in front of us was perfection. From the presentation to the taste, it was some of the best sushi and sashimi I have ever tasted. Next time you are there, be daring and let the chef decide what you should eat!"

"My boyfriend and I had been very excited to try Katsuya on our LA visit. The food was good, we were very pleased with the crispy rice and spicy tuna dish--a perfect appetizer with great flavor. He ordered the rock shrimp tempura roll and I ordered the Japanese prix fixe. The miso soup was hot, salad was good, but the chicken teriyaki was nothing special. The roll was yummy, and if we were going back, I would order a few of the special rolls for that night and share, they sounded delicious from the server's descriptions. The drinks were good, yet overpriced. Only complaint is that we felt like the server was rushing us the entire meal."

"We were 4 in our party and we all got our sushi at different times. Service too slow and the place is way over priced. The one in Manhattan Beach is superior by far."

"Had table waiting when we arrived and we were seated promptly. Our waitress new the menu very well and was able to provide excellent recommendations based on our requests. Drinks were excellent as well. The noise level of the restaurant got to be loud at times due to the music and crowd. Our waitress took care of us and we didn't feel as though we were being rushed to leave, which can happen at other dining locations."

"It was our first Katsuya experience. Had an awesome time. Service was excellent, even with regards to our 5 year old. They do not have a kids menu, but he ate well regardless. Thank you for a great meal."

"I am a fan of fine dining and am accustomed to small portions but this was ridiculous!! We spent almost $500.00 for four (thin/fit) people and we left hungry. We only had one bottle of wine so most of bill was on food. The food itself was OKAY, it all kind of tasted the same, nothing really super wowed any of us. Our main dishes all came out at different times which was very annoying; there were only maybe 7 tables taken at the time. They brought out and comped some very wonderful desserts without us asking or complaining so that helped save the night.
Ambiance and staff was great."

"convenient when going to the Staples Center. The food was good but not great. I don't mind paying high prices when I get top quality food. Here the prices were high and the food was better than average for sushi but not great. The service was friendly and excellent."

"Not this time, but LAST time we dined, we accidentally let my birthday present on the floor next to the table. Staff called me at the end of their shift and held it until I could return the next day. This was GREATLY appreciated! That's why we came back-- great food and I know I will be well cared for."

"We visited Katsuya before a Kings Hockey game at the Staples Center so this review may not be indicative of the restaurant on a non-event night. The service was fantastic. The food came out REALLY quickly which was great because we were heading to the game. Everyone was super helpful from the hosts, servers, and managers."

"I come here a lot before events at Staples. This experience was poor. Our waiter was no where to be found and we couldn't order our food. We had to grab a host to order. He was nice to help but got the order wrong. Very disappointing experience."

"Long lines, always tough to get a table even with a reservation. Typical LA hot spot. Food is unique and satisfying but the prices are very high. Its loud and filled with glitter and glam. High energy restaurant, decent service. One of those places to take a date if she is into the "hollywood" party scene."

"All was good, except they ran out of the rib eye, they threw away the white rice before we were done with our meal, so we couldn't get seconds and the edamame took so long, we didn't want it any longer, so they took it off the bill."

"Decent food, good drinks, overpriced of course. Mediocre service in a loud restaurant that's trying too hard to be hip. LA Live convenience helps make Katsuya a decent spot to get a bite before or after a game. No way I would go there otherwise."

"Do not bother!! After having been here I can't imagine what all the fuss is about. The sushi is NOT innovative - it's simply expensive. We've had much better in many spots around the country. Their "signature dish" is just overcooked, crispy rice with overly processed tuna and their Hamachi and Jalapenos was underwhelming as well. The restaurant itself is loud and has kind of a cafeteria feel to it - no atmoshpere to speak of whatsoever. After sampling the two dishes mentioned above we finished our wine, paid the check and left. This place is a total tourist trap and true sushi lovers should avoid it like the plague!!!"

"This is a nice place for getting together with friends to get the night started. If it's your first time here I think that The Prix Fixe is the way to go. It's a complete dinner... Soup or Salad, Entree and dessert. I had the Salmon and it was delicious!!"

"The fact that sushi and hot food come out at different times is quite problematic. My wife ordered sushi for dinner and I ordered a hot plate. Her food came out a full 15 minutes before mine. They need an expediter to ensure more seamless and simultaneous food service."

"Katsuya is our "go-to" restaurant when we visit our daughter at USC ... not only did we celebrate her 18th birthday there at a private table, but we are there frequently to feast on our favorite dishes. Our recent dining experience was made even more special with our enthusiastic server, Liberty. She was so friendly and attentive! We are from OC, so with the Laguna location closed, expect to see us at the LA Live location even more often!"

"I had been to Katsuya several times over the past year when visiting LA... I was down this weekend for the NCAA Regional Finals. I could not have asked for a better experience.
We asked the waitress to pace the servings... So we actually ordered at three different times. The food was AWESOME. I thought the portions were good sized for Japanese.
But more importantly, we had an 8:00 reservation and were able to enjoy a great relaxed evening... We let at 10:00.
My recommendation is IF you are going to a game, you may not want to go to a 5Star restaurant and have to be out by 7:45..."

"I used to love this place so much but its gone down hill. Don't get me wrong it still has the cool looks and feel but the food just isn't what it used to be. Our server was nice but we were brought out dishes that we didn't order and later realized that we did not get the two orders of baked crab hand rolls that we ordered and paid for. I will not be coming back here again. If I am going to spend this kind of money I would rather go to Nobu."

"Took my customers to dinner. For the price you pay you do not get enough food and the the server does not make sure you receive all the food you order. I expected great service, food and drink for this upper class restaurant.....which I did not get."

"we usually go to the Katsuya in Brentwood and my daughter Nia who turned 18 on March 17 this is her favorite restaurant. We went to a Clipper game at Staples Center and we decided to go to Katsuya at LA LIVE. The service was OUTSTANDING from the hostess to our service they were both AMAZING. Since it was an early dinner I didnt get that ambiance of dining at a 5 star restaurant but it was still lovely."

"Katsuya definitely lives up to it's reputation! The food was very good - unique. There is a nice area for dining outside, or inside you can sit at the sushi bar, or be seated at a table. The chef's special dishes are the ones you need to try - they will not disappoint. The other dishes are basically the same thing you can get at any Japanese restaurant. I was a little taken back by a couple of incidents with the wait staff. When my husband and I rolled up for our 5pm reservation, the staff was rude to us and said in a not so nice way, we are not open yet until 5pm and to wait outside."

"This was a great way to start the night before the Kings Game with an energetic vibe in the restaurant. The food was not only delicious but beautifully presented! The service was impeccable. The manager even compt part of our meal because it was taking awhile. The table we had was seated next to the sushi bar so we could see them creating beautiful dishes for people. Overall it was a great start to a fun evening!"

"Well we made the reservation 3 weeks in advance as well as called to confirm early in the day. When we arrived the host was acting as if there was nothing available unless we wanted to sit outside. After asking for the manager we received our table. There was 6 of us eating as well as drinks. The food was great except it was never enough!!!! Small portions. The service was sub par but in there defense it was right before a concert and it was packed. $700 for 6 people a little steep but good."
