"Not nearly a great experience. Loud, rude servers, too much fluff and not enough substance. Sushi grade an quality was very average. Server could not answer questions about where fish came from, whether farmed or wild caught. Other than what was delivered that day.
Would I return? Only if someone pays me. Katsuya +stark is suppose to be upscale and chic. Like the Mondriain, like the Graves Hotel in MN, etc. Thought I like the large illuminated wall prints. The full take was more flash fast food than anything of character."

"We have dined at Katsuya in Brentwood, Hollywood, and Glendale. I have never been disappointed by the food at Katsuya. This by far was the worst Katsuya food experience that I have ever had. We were entertaining a friend from out of town and I spent all evening before dinner telling her about all the food and how amazing it was, only to be let down by this venue.
The crab roll, that is always soo good, was bland. The only thing we ordered that was not underpar was the creamy rock shrimp, but that is fried and hard to not mess up.
This location gives Katsuya a bad name. I was so disappointed. We truly love Katsuya's food and don't mind walking out of there paying a lot of money for our food, but the LA LIVE location was disappointing."

"Had high expectancy about the food and atmosphere but experienced something totally different. Tables were too close together, which made it uncomfortable to get in and out of where we sat. To get to our table we had to bump into and go around other tables. We could not have a conversation with each other unless we were on top of our lungs. It felt like an upscale sports bar more than a restaurant. Our waiter was nice to inform us that the portions are small and would be coming out at random. The food there was good, I would give it a 7/10 for taste, but of course the portions were small. The ratio between price to portion size was just poor. IMO, Its not worth the visit or your wallet. 5/10 Overall rating."

"The Kobe ribeye was not a solid ribeye steak but slices of ribeye. I requested a medium done steak but received a very rare interior with a seared crust (I ate 1 slice & my date ate 1 slice. we both were disappointed in the taste & tenderness. The sashimi was pretty good (salmon, yellowtail, scallop & ahi tuna). the halibut was decent & the rainbow roll was good on the sushi side. The mushroom salad was excellent. Our waiter provide excellent service (Jay k)but we asked 2 other servers for forks & neither severs brought forks, We received the forks promptly from our actual waiter when I asked for forks"

"Me & my family just went to this place like between 2/20-2/22 of 2010. First you have to reserve but instead you can jst go walk in (which was a waste of time) service was good, ambiance was good & i agree the food too, but doesnt mean WOULD CHARGE ME TWICE IN DIFFERENT DAYS (yeah not a coincidence) bcoz if its an accident then should have been charged 2 at the same day.. anyway, i'm still trying to get the restaurant on hold by phone & looking for an email where i could send reports to them, i failed & so weird that THEY WERE SOO HARD TO REACH!! like i guess you really have to go to their place to show directly in their faces!! i called so many names & phone numbers that links them & promised me to connect with KATSUYA but still never ans!"

"The outside seating although cool was really awkward for eating. The food is EXTREMELY overpriced and the suggested plates were really not that good. The portions are a joke as well... I LOVE sushi but ended ordering teryaki New York steak that was served with really bad mashed potatos and the steak was NOTHING special. I would NEVER go back there again."

"I just visited Katsuya at LA Live for Valentines Day. Before I made the reservations I checked out the website and although I thought it maybe another Nobu impostor, I thought I would give it a chance. First thing I noticed is that the clientele is dressed extremely casual, oversized jerseys and shorts. Not a place I would go for a romantic dinner or elegant one as well. The atmosphere was lively. The furniture is worn and does not come close to their web page clean look. The food was good, not a great value but good. Lot's of ponzu like sauces and small portions. Best was the yellowtail collars, excellent. Service was excellent. For about the same money go to Nobu, better preparation, food and ambiance. Katsuya is an imposter."

"We were catered to quickly and although the noise level was high the feel of the restaurant was energetic and at the same time romantic. The tables were candle-lit..and all the waiters were dressed professionally. Everyone was dressed semi-formally. The food was absolutely amazing. Though it was a bit pricey, the food was definately worth it. [14$ for 4 pieces of sushi]. Loved it!!"

"Had reservations for Katsuya at 7 on Valentines Day, so was glad to even get a reservation. We got there really early, but they were very accommodating and allowed us to be seated early anyway. The place was packed, and they had even added tables for the holiday, so seats were nearly elbow to elbow/back to back. The food was very good, though with the new table set up, food deliveries were not accurate. We had ordered the spicy tuna on crispy rice and it took 3 tries before they actually got us our order. The drinks were good, and aside from the above mentioned mistake, the service wasn't too bad."

"The food was not good, it was very good to great. I am a food broker in the foodservice area and appreciate exceptional cuisine. The reservation service was great and follow up was very good. Our waiter (Jay) was a snob. The first thing he told us was that the portions were very small and if we wanted to order from the "hot menu" it would be inconvenient because he would be going to a different area to pick up our orders, and offered to have us move to another table. He pushed the special cocktails and begrudgingly gave us the wine list. The restaurant was great but Jay needs to find a new line of work. We'll try it again but specifically request another waiter."

"The food was very good. We had Albacore sashimi in lemon and garlic. Very tender and very good. Overall, we really enjoyed the food. Portion sizes were on the small side, so the value per item is limited. Also enjoyed the "fix prix" 3 course meal. Had the teryiaki NY steak which was pretty good. Service was good, not great. Started off very attentive, but fell off at the end. The environment was clean, but a little crowded. They definitely got the most tables possible into their space. Overall, it's somewhere that we'd go for a special occasion (it was Valentine's day and went to the Kings game afterwards), but not somewhere we'd probably go on a regular date out. Noise was a little loud to the point of having to yell to hear each other."

"This was one of the best dining experiences I have ever had. The restaurant called to confirm my reservation, and they easily changed my reservation to an earlier time at my request. Upon arrival, I was greated and immediately seated. The server had a great attitude and when she gave us recommendations she didnt just point out the most expensive items on the menu. We ordered a couple of her recomendations and I must say, the sushi was incredible. Quite possibly the best sushi I have ever had. I was okay with the prices. Especially when you consider it's location. Definitely can't wait to have sushi on the patio during the summer."

"My boyfriend and I came here for an early valentines dinner weekend.We made reservations early the week. We got at LA Live,Katsuya an hour early and we were really hungry and did not want to wait for our 7:30pm reservation. So I asked the hostess if we can go early since our reservation is not till 7:30. She gladly said "yes" and took us in. The place was smaller than the one in Glendale.When we walked in all the employees greeted us with such energy was very nice. Our waitress was great and our water was filled everytime it was half way done. The food came pretty fast than the last time we ate Katsuya (Glendale). The employees were very attentive. The food was "OK" for our second visit. Would come again just for the Creamy shrimp appetizr"

"Sat 02/06/10 7pm was my first time coming to Katsuya. I came to celebrate my friends birthday. It was a party of 2 & we felt amazing as we left. We shared a appetizer of Albacore Tuna, Miso Cod & Filet Mignon w/Foi Gras. We had 2 bottles of sake & one beer. Our waitress walked by & a paper flew off her tray.. we returned it to her in case she needed it.. in return we got a dessert on the house (which we already decided to order). I believe it was the manager that came out and kept refilling our sake glases along with the waitress. I believe her name was Jane or Judy.. not sure. Her as a server alone made the experience there incredible. I will be returning more often for the food, abmiance and especially the service"

"Went here on a Friday night. Here's my review:

Food:
I wasn't expecting the best sushi here, but i expected more than what i got. Overpriced sushi, but then again it's LA and I think for the most part you eat there because you can afford it.

Ambiance:
The inside was a modern looking restaurant with abstract paintings on the wall. The menu was the same.

Service:
Waitress was really nice, she made sure our drinks were refilled on time and offered different options for the alcohol we were drinking.

Overall:
A place not to go for the sushi but more of a scene place to eat. Don't bring cheap friends on a night out there."

"Food was great. We had to scream/yell when we were chatting because the music was too loud. The service was okay at the beginning but the waiter changed his attitude (to a bad one) after we ordered from the dineLA week menu and ice water. We should get the same service no matter what we ordered."

"I frequently go to Katsu Ya in Encino and Studio City. This was my first time at this location. It was bad. The fish was mediocre quality, the cooked dishes were smothered in sauce, and the service was horrible. The waiter was downright rude. He was impatient about answering questions, and if we hesitated in ordering, he would walk away and tell us he would be back in a few minutes. This is not what I would expect from a $200 meal. Somebody at the restaurant should spend some time at the studio city or Encino location and see how friendly service can be and what good fish tastes like."

"The whole experience was a bit more like being in an airport than a restaruant. The service was rushed,irratic and inattentive. Most of the courses arrived all at once overwhelming us with the food before we had even received our drinks. Then there was a gap of 45 minutes to get the final course. There were many people coming and going from our table but it was difficult to have a conversation with the server. For the prices that are charged you should expect comparable service. The food was fresh but not particularly notable or innovative given the price."

"Its hard to enjoy the food at this packed restaurant at LA Live. Its noisy and you will vie for the waiter's attention as he struggles to get guests served before showtime at the nearby venues. "We booked here because we were going across the way to the Nokia but we won't return. The place was so incredibly loud with mediocre food. Our poor waiter was completely unprepared for what I would assume is a typical Saturday night. It took 20 minutes to get our first drink-the food had already started to arrive. We had to remind him twice on one of our appetizer and got the standard line "it comes out when the kitchen has it ready" even though the two tables around us, who were seated and ordered after us, both received the same dish 30 minutes before us. We could never find him and had a 30 minute wait between courses."

"It was not clouded as I thought but the seat we had was not that great.
Although we had a reservation, a lady at the restaurant was gonna give us very close to a front door where was SO COLD. There were so many empty seats.

Before we arrived, I called them to ask directions and I did not know where "LA LIVE" was and the lady on the phone told me ONLY "in LA LIVE" and sounded like we should know where LA LIVE is. That's not nice.
She also gave me the direction of parking which was not correct street name that was confusing us. People work at the restaurant should know better direction and attitude.
I feel this restaurant can be a only casual restaurant...

Good for young party people..."

"We left before ordering. We sat there for a while but the noise was absolutely deafening, and we had just seen a great show that we wanted to talk about, not shout about. "I was with a group of 7. All of us found the resturant noisy, the service poor and the food overpriced and not extrodinary. Our food was brought out in shifts and the last 2 orders were forgotten or something. They arrived 20 minutes after the other plates and only after we asked twice where they were. There are more servers and employees coming to our table and no one knew what the previous server asked, stated or was told. It seemed to be mass confusion. It even took 10 -15 minutes to get our bill back with the credit card receipt. I will not recommend this resturant."

"The restaurant staff was overwhelmed with the amount of poeple. Everything was a hassle. Ordering took a long time and actually recieving food and drinks were required the manager to intervene. "Believing the hype on their site, I was seriously disappointed. The menu offered traditional yet creative food and some failed miserably (teriyaki anything) or were uninspiring (crispy spicy tuna appetizer). Others were phenomenal (Kobe Tobanyaki and panna cotta).

What tipped the experience to almost unacceptable was the service. It was slow, inaccurate and the waiter wasted our time by constantly asking what we ordered. Not only that, another waiter decided to berate the bus staff (who, frankly, was doing almost all the work!). I will not return."

"Food was great as always. A bit pricey in the sushi department, but it was good quality, so maybe worth the few extra dollars per serving. The service is fantastic. I went with my wife and had the same waitress from my last visit two months ago. The last time I took my 10 year old son. The waitress remembered me and even remembered what we ordered. All the staff is right on top of your needs."

"This restaurant had AMAZING food, I can't complain about taste or quality. The only drawback is that is WAY overpriced! My boyfriend and I went there before a basketball game and spent $189 between the both of us and we didn't drink that much at all. I've gone to other Sushi restaurants that are great but cheaper. Overall, if you are willing to pay that much for a meal, it is definitely really good food."

"Though sushi joints line the boulevards like the common man, this place took it to another level. The atmosphere is mild to cool; the lighting sets a mood for the intimate conversation. The food is a nice treat from your run-of-the-mill fish bar. Service however lacked on a busy night and my appetite suffered. I suppose if I had joined the 6 people at the table next to me, I alone, would have received the same royal treatment that they did."

"Very slow service. It took me 40 minutes before I even got my drinks. On top of that it took another 30 minutes for my food to come out. When it did come out the food came out, it came one at a time with lots of time in between. So by the time my dates food came out, mine was cold. The waiter was completely awful, extremely slow, never introduced his name, and for some reason served everything from over my shoulder. It even took him 15 minutes to bring out the check, which is completely unacceptable seeing as to how the restaurant was half empty."

"Since this restaurant is in the middle of a very busy venue it is very loud and not the most intimate of places to eat, I get that. The service was ok, just ok, the waiter was as attentive as he could be but it should not take more than 10 minutes to get 2 simple cocktails and it did, that was off putting. The food came out really quickly, in contrast to the cocktails so that put the overall pace ofthe meals at odds. Now as for the food, presentation was good, quality of the fish was good, taste was average. I would not return for the sushi alone, so I hope that this was helpful for the restaurant."

"The food at the Katsuya chain can't compare with the original Katsu-Ya... and is overpriced for the quality. Excellent wait and bus staff. However, the bar service was very slow. It took about 20 minutes to get our first round of drinks, which were ordered before food, but came after the first dishes were served. Wine selection is terrible, with the least expensive red being almost $50. It's always a good idea to have low, moderate and high price points. Instead Katsuya starts with moderate-high price points. (Even the original Katsu-Ya has a $28 merlot.) Clearly at this site, we are paying for location and convenience. When you have a captive audience, quality and accessible pricing are not a consideration. Also too noisy to talk."

"We went there for my birthday. I made reservations for 12 and they squished us into two tables that were fit for 10 people. It was pretty loud and rather dark; some people complained that they could barely see the food, although I thought the food was pretty good. My sister brought a birthday cake for me, and they tried to charge her $5 per piece that they would cut (which would come out to $60 extra, for a cake that we bought ourselves--pretty ridiculous if you ask me). After she refused to pay that fee and explained that she couldn't come pick up the cake right away (someone else dropped it off an hour before-hand), they told her that they were going to charge her because the cake was taking up space in the fridge."

"The food was pretty awesome. Especially the Creamy Rock Shrimp, that was amazing! The ambiance was very nice and romantic. The music was okay, it needs some hip hop to it but the music was too loud because I could hardly hear what my boyfriend was saying, he had to repeat himself several times. So turn it down a notch. But other than that, everything else was definitely a great experience! :) I will definitely be coming back again!"

"Here is a perfect example of what open table gets you. A seat at a very popular spot with no fuss. While throngs of want to be diners tried their best to get a table at the front desk, without a reservation on a Saturday night it was in vein.
Now onto the food. Authentic Sushi...no....fantastic flavors, creative and fun fair.....for sure. Not to be missed is the Kobe beef and foie gras, the spicy rock shrimp and the crab roll in soy paper. A cool desert selection can be had as well. Cocktails are strong and well made. Our server was very cool, attentive, and despite how much work she had to do with other tables keep things moving along. This is a high energy place to dine on the weekend, don;t expect quiet or privacy. Fun Fun Fun!"

"Katsuya was great! I organized cocktail hour for a business gathering for 12 people and everyone loved it. The manager accomodated our group by letting us close off the lounge area by the windows with the large TV's. That was wonderful, but I did have to get there early in the evening in order claim that section.

The drinks were excellent during happy hour and our waiter was very attentive. It was lively but not too noisy which was perfect because it was a business gathering and I wanted everyone to have fun but still be able to hear everyone.

The food was very good but comes in smaller portions and the menu was definitely more expensive than other sushi places in downtown. But overall a great experience and I highly recommend it."

"Being both to the Brentwood and Hollywood locations, we might have been expecting too much out of this one?? The food is hands down awesome but felt that the service was poor. We frequent the Hollywood one, and if there's even a spill on the table they clean it up. At the LA Live spot, we had to flag down someone each time not to mention if they brought new trays, they wouldn't even take empty plates. Maybe making the location bigger than the rest of them, was a bad idea because the waiters and waitresses can't keep up with volume."

"The outdoor view was nice. We went before an LA Kings game. However, they were busy and they forgot our order. We waited 30 minutes for our food after placing our order and a different server had to ask us again what we had ordered. One of the items we ordered was their sampler which was a mistake. If you're a sushi roll fan and don't actually care for quality sashimi...this is the restaurant for you! This restaurant was roll city...literally every table ordered tons of rolls...very little actual sashimi...but then again they're not specifically a sushi restaurant. Katsuya is a "Japanese" restaurant. The Kobe beef in a reduction sauce was the best item we had. It's VERY unlikely that we'll be back. Too many other better places."

"Set right in the middle of LA Live, when you go can really effect your experience. We got there right as a Kings game was about to start and the restaurant was clearing out. That left us with a little crowd and good service.

Food was all very good. The sushi was fresh, well put together and presented and tasted great. The shrimp dish was excellent, but the favorite was the special crab hand roll.

Overall, a very enjoyable experience."

"We had dinner here before attending a concert. I was concerned about service since the restuarant was crowded, mostly with the concert go-ers. But to my surprise service was on point. Our waiter was excellent and efficient. The wait for our food was very minimal and the quality excellent as expected. Great ambiance and beautiful restuarant. Looking forward to returning."

"the food wasn't that great honestly. The food is pricey and portions are small. My ice tea was served luke warm. the sushi was good, but very small. Inside, it is very simple. Not much of a view, very modern. It is also very loud inside, not a romantic setting or special occasion I would say. If you are in the Los Angeles area and looking for a sushi, I would recommend the Geisha House better. Much better food, ambiance and over all appeal for the price. If you are in LA Live where Katsuya is located I would recommend eating at another restraunt or eating before hand.

"it was a great experience going to katsuya in LA Live! i have gone to the one in studio city before SBE opened the ones in downtown/ hollywood. Though the food is to die for, the prices are pretty high for very small portions. crispy rice and spicy tuna is 15 dollars for only 4 pieces! a few days ago i went to the one in studio city and i am pretty sure that i got more than 4 pieces for less than 15 dollars. For hipsters and angelenos katsuya, though expensive is a fun, energetic dining experience. they play contemporary music as you munch on the cripsy onion with albacore and the service is OK, but let's be real here. the food is great, overpriced, but the majority of the people that go to katusya are there for the scene."

"At first we got great service, then it all went downhill. I am in the restaurant industry and still felt completely ripped off by the price of a cosmopolitan. $15.00! Really? Maybe at 11:00pm club hours but at 6:30 for dinner? Not only that but it wasn't even full. Their was a good inch missing from the top. It took 15 minutes for my husband to get a drink, but the food was fast and good. In this economy, I can't say that I would return. The check was way too high for what we had received."

"We had another event to attend. Our reservations were at 5:30, and left the restaurant at 7:15. Our order was placed before the guests next to us, and they received their food way before us. They noticed the delay in our food and wondered why. They even mentioned to us that there wasn't a lot of guests waiting or even in the dining area. We all agreed our order was forgotten. Will not recommend if you are attending another event in the area."

"While the food tasted good and was fresh this would not be a restaurant that I would rave about. The prices for sushi items were high in contrast to the small proportion that is served. The sushi/sashimi items were sliced deli thin and when incorporated into a roll you could not taste the fish. I really liked the spicy tuna with crunchy rice, the albacore with crispy onion was good except the albacore was sliced so thin that you do not get enough taste of the fish and was priced to high for the amount that was served. Coffee was $10.00 for a cup. After spending over $200 we were still hungry. If you want good fresh sushi with appropriate servings go to the Samurai in Solana Beach."

"Food was very good. Excellent taste, but a little pricey for the quantity on some dishes. Green tea, which is usally included with meals at most Japanese restaurants, is $5 per order. They do provide a pot of tea per person, but it is enough for 2-3 people, which they don't tell you when you order. Will return to try other items on the menu. Recommend ordering a variety of dishes and sharing."

"Frankly a very unimpressive venture,the alleged decor of Phillipe Stark amounts to a few tacky mirrors on the walls, and the food is done better at my favorite neighborhood sushi bar at a third of the price. The decibel level was extremely high and unpleasant incapable of carrying on a conversation,don't know why they think that it is necessary to have the soundtrack at the mind numbing level."

"We are not big Sushi fans, but were pleasantly surprised. The menu has a great variety of cooked foods also for those less adventurous. I would recommend ordering dishes to share to experience more of the food. We were giving a dish by mistake, the Spicy Albacore Sashimi with Crispy Onions. Not knowing what any of the dishes we did order looked like we started to eat it. I have to say, it was delicious and I would order it again. Other great dishes were the Baked Crab Handroll and the Kobe Tobanyaki."

"The ambiance of this place is great- very trendy, very fun. My guest and I made reservations to eat there after the American Music Awards. We thought it would be a great way to round out the night. But the service was the worst I've ever had in my life. I know that there can be isolated incidents of bad service, but our waitress didn't even try to make it seem like she cared that our experience was terrible. We were prepared to order lots of food and wine, but our entrees came out before our appetizers, and we had to ask several times for everything we ordered besides our entrees. The busboy was more attentive than our server. I will never, ever spend money here again."

"I took my son to Katsuya for a pre-concert dinner. We had a reservation, but being the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, it wasn't very crowded and we were seated immediately. The service was awesome and even my son commented on how well we were treated. The waitress made menu recommendations which we followed and were not disappointed.
We shared the $65 sampler which left me wanted for more of certain dishes. Everything was delicious."

"Its a little pricey but totally worth it. The place is beautiful food was delicious and the drinks were awesome i recommend the burnin mandarin mmm! Great drink!"

"I had a party of 20 and was surprised by the set up of the tables.
My two tables were split up so it made it diffcult to go around to all my guests.
It was my birthday and any my friends and family members had asked the staff to at least sing happy birthday, but their request wasn't honored.
Oveall my party and I had good experience and the enjoyed the food on the menu."
