Fringale, which means "the urge to eat," has been a major contributor to San Francisco's South of Market culinary renaissance. From its opening fourteen years ago, it has remained a favorite dining spot for food lovers, socialites, politicians, artists, celebrities, and journalists. "Fringale is small and quiet while the food is big in taste. We have never had a disappointing meal here whether for lunch or dinner. I think they have many regular customers as it isn't in the restaurant "section" of town so can be easily missed while out driving around. Be sure to spoon up on the wonderful sauce that comes with the entree."

"It's been a long time since I dined at Fringale. We had a group of six which I thought may be too large for such an intimate restaurant, but this was not a problem. In fact our table was perfect, quiet enough so that we could all hear each other but not too crowded. The service was excellent and all the courses were delicious, especially the duck. My wife enjoyed the fish and the pork was perfectly prepared. I might also mention that my cocktail was a nice large glass. All in all a delightful evening, glad to see that they are still doing such a great job."

"The food wasn't too impressive, especially my steak frites. The braised veal short rib was good, and the chocolate flourless cake was very nice, but the pain perdu was lackluster. I went here because of the high ratings on Yelp, but found it to not meet the standards I thought it would."

"A French bistro at its best. The pork tenderloin was according to my husband "the best ever". The Fri./Sat, duck special with port reduction was done to perfection--medium/rare. They are known for their moules and frites--but we went for something different this time. We shall return.

"The atmosphere is cute and intimate. But the food was only fine. None of it was exceptional, except the Basque tart. The seafood basquaise was very uninspired. The appetizers were nice, especially the onion tart. Given the cost, you can get a lot better food in SFO. If ambiance is as important to you as food., then this is a great place. Cozy, full, with a pleasant buzz of conversation, but not too loud."

"My party of four ordered about a third of the items off the dinner menu. The appetizers were excellent (salads, calamari) but the entrees was just "okay". The short ribs were not tender or juicy and too fatty. The lamb was decent. The ravioli was overpowered by the cheese. The seafood creole was good but could have used some spice. Service was attentive considering there was only one waiter serving the entire dining area (like 10 tables). However, that was not good enough. They served half the table of entrees and we waited at least a couple minutes for the rest which for a restaurant of this caliber should never be the case. Our water glasses became empty frequently. Drink were strong and tasty though. I may or may not return."

"It is not "foodie" oriented with the latest trends of ingredients arranged with tweezers served on big plates in small portions for big dollars with over loquacious waitpeople endlessly describing each ingredient like their guests were first graders. We were greeted warmly and professionally at the door by the host waiting at the end of a small but well stocked bar. Our waiter appeared promptly and was also friendly and attentive without being intrusive for entire meal. The wine list was more than adequate with good to excellent French an California selections. Excellent appetizer and two excellent entres made for a happy evening."

"We had an absolutely wonderful lunch at Fringale. We took some friends there for their first visit, and they loved it. We had the steak, the dungeness crab napolean, and the organic roasted chicken breast, and every dish was delicious. And the pommes frites were thin and crispy, just the way we love them. "Fringale fits to a tee the definition of a neighborhood restaurant offering quality food and outstanding service in the expectation that customers will keep returning, and they do. On a busy Saturday night many of the tables were filled with diners known to the wait staff. Our waiter has worked at Fringale for a quarter of a century. He brings enthusiasm, friendliness and professionalism to his work. His timing was impeccable. We never felt rushed. Food arrived at the right moment. Our water glasses were always filled. Yet, nothing interfered with the rhythm of our conversation. An excellent evening."

"Service was good. Dined here a few times already. Get the dungeness crabcake. It's my favorite appetizer. Goodluck finding parking. We had to pay $12 to park across to dine here. But it was nice evening and we didn't really mind it. I always get their duck confit here. But I tried the Corvina Seabass instead. It was good fish, but a little bland for me-the entree wasn't that exciting in terms of taste. I'm sticking to usual duck confit again next time."

"Jean Marie the owner and the staff Andre and Samuel are just incredible. I have been going for over 10 years and the quality of the cuisine has only become better. Kudos to the chef!!
It is also a great place for lunch, reasonably priced for dinner with a very reasonable wine list. Try the squid, the seafood basquise and of course the steak with pomme frites."

"The food at Fringale is strait forward classic French fare. The menu holds no surprises, composed of dishes that appear on many French SF restuarant menus. However Fringale execute these dish beautifully, the lamb shank in thyme sauce fell of the bone and was succulent. The Duck confit, had a fantastic sear, giving a it a crisp outside will not being overly fatty. The side that accompanied this dishes were pretty middling and uninteresting, it was the only part of the meal where I felt a bit let down.
The service was EXCELLENT. Attentive, funny, and extremely professional. It made the experience for me. Also the price point is amazing, a must try if in the SOMA area."
