"This was our second time at Root 246. While the menu has changed, the basics have not. Excellent ingredients in relatively simple recipes, executed to perfection. We started with an order of muscles that were the most tender I've ever had. Simple broth with some white wine and herbs was delicious. My wife had short ribs while I had the New York. Both cooked perfectly."

"I was really impressed by this restaurant. It by far exceed our expectations. The employees were really friendly and very service oriented. The martini flights were fun and the desserts to die for. I loved the Candy Bar! I really enjoyed the entrees as well and can honestly say I have never had a better scallop. They were cooked perfectly. I would recommend Root 246 to anyone who loves food. I guarantee I will be dinning there every time I visit Solvang."

"Spent a night in Solvang on our way up from San Diego to San Francisco. Stayed at Corque Hotel, which was very convenient, and had very nice rooms, albeit a bit over-priced. The restaurant was definitely a local night life scene with a very vibrant bar. Appetizers were excellent, especially the grilled octopus. We had picked up a bottle of local red wine, grenache I believe it was for about $20 in the local market. Ordered 4 glasses of the same and was hit with a $54 wine bill! It was almost half of what we paid for our food! Overall I would recommend this restaurant, but beware of the wait staff recommendations on the wines!"

"My wife and I were looking forward to reliving our previous experiences at Roots 246. Instead, we found the menu lacked the innovative selection of the past. Our choices were few, expensive and postions small. For example, the kale salad was drenched in dressing which choked the kale flavor. The short ribs were good yet few served in a small "soup" bowl."

"We love making the Sunday drive from Santa Barbara to Solvang for Root 246's brunch. The food is delicious and there is a good variety of items. Mimosas are a must! Warning, if you like to indulge, expect to spend a good 3-4 hours dining. I promise it will be worth it. We love the modern yet comfortable decor. Its a nice change from the old Dutch look of Solvang. The service is attentive, not rushed and personable. We always have a great time!"

"A really nice brunch with a nice variety of fresh and well prepared delights. Orange juice fresh squeezed, french toast with apples, wonderful salad, omelette bar, nice pastries, etc. A real treat for anyone visiting Solvang on a Sunday. The Sous Chef gave us information about some of the specialty items...a pleasure. Service was very good and very friendly."

"We had several friends rave about the food here so decided to try it. And I'm happy to say - they were right! Living in LA we are used to amazing cuisine but Solvang's Root 246 dished out one of the best meals I've had. The salted potatoes appetizer was simply done and delicious. The salad as well, lightly dressed greens that exuded freshness. The quinoa was the best I have had anywhere - we asked for a spoon to get every drop of the sauce. And we ended the night with fresh lime sherbet. Oh - and every bite was vegan. Amazing and beautifully presented. We ate on the patio and it was a beautiful night. Our service was impeccable. I have nothing but great things to say and recommend Root 246 highly."

"We hadn't eaten at Root 246 since chef Bradley Ogden had left and weren't sure what to expect. We weren't disappointed as the food was delicious, particularly the short ribs and the scallops. The only reason for my 4 star rating is that the entree portions are small in relation to the prices. It is a beautiful restaurant and we will definitely return."

"To start, the drinks at the bar are great. Cocktails were great and I usually love getting wine but heard the drinks were good and they did not disappoint. I checked in on FourSquare. Me and my date shared a Kale Caeser and was very happy with that salad.
The hanger steak was recommended by the server and FourSquare reviews. I ordered it but it was too salty. I wanted to give it a chance, but it was crusted in salt and also was presented on salted potatoes which were too salty. So salty that each bite I tried to give it a chance, it just ranged from salty to extremely salty. I had to send it back. At that point, my date was almost done with his dinner and so I ordered what he ordered as it was vegetarian and cooked fast, so I got the Quino"

"Root 246 was good, but nothing compared to what it used to be when Bradley Ogden was linked to it.It's sad to see & taste how different the food is. The food is no where as incredible as it used to be. The decor is still the same which makes it a very nice restaurant but then you are handed the menu it's a simple one sheet CHEAP LOOKING THING that looks like it belongs at a car hop burger joint. It's confusing, we overheard at least two other tables asking the server to explain it. Skip the appetizers, they're expensive & tiny, but if you must go for the chicken dumplings, but don't expect to even be satisfied, you'll need at least three orders of them for that. Main dish=short ribs & new york steak were good- dessert= chocolate cake was ok"

"Wished we could have dined both nights we were in Solvang but they were booked w/ priv. party. Celebrated husband's birthday on a Sat. for romantic getaway to Santa Barbara area for a few nights. The service was outstanding, it was very lively, fun but not overly so. They accommodated me somewhat being gluten-free but would have liked more choices on the sharing plates (Ours) menu like if they had used a wheat-free soy sauce on the bacon wrapped dates or just a few more choices beyond olives. Also, salad came w/ croutons after I made it clear thru many questions re GF.
The main entree menu had plenty of items that all, including myself, could eat. Root 246 had, hands down, the best ambience AND service AND food quality in Solvang."

"We were seated for 15 min. and had to get up to find someone to help us with a drink order. Poor, poor customer service! After being there for 30 minutes, they came to offer bread, which was very good. Our food came shortly after that, in a timely manner. Food was good, small portions for the value. I had the $31 scallops (4 to an order), tasty sauce. The quinoa my friend ordered was good. Again small portion of veggie quinoa for $24! Not once did any server or anyone apologize for the delay or slow service. Maybe this is customary for this restaurant., who knows My girlfriends and I plan a girls( 4-6) trip once to twice a year and look for great restaurants, unfortunately, we will not be back. Beautiful restaurant and bar area!"

"I had my husband's birthday dinner there upon my sister-in-law's recommendation. There were six of us and we were seated at a round table which was great for conversation. Our server was wonderful, knowledgeable and was right on with her recommendations when asked. Great service from everyone beginning with the hostess. We loved the menu, the taste of the food, the wine list, and the overall ambience. I definitely would recommend this restaurant and can't wait to return."

"Root 246 is a real find in Solvang. High concept cuisine, fine drinks and a good wine list. Menu is smaller than last visit, but that makes sense in a tourism-dominated economy. Some interesting drinks on the cocktail menu, and their basic martini was good."

The bread was tasty, light and well-herbed.
Kale salad good but heavy handed on what they called caesar dressing and the chicken spicy meatballs were ok but shape was cumbersome and messy to wrap

The Halibut was tasty, not exceptional. The Monkfish portion was miniscule with a thick bacon wrap which overpowered the fish and tough to cut. We suggested to the waitress that she tell the chef to consider using the bacon as a garnish sprinkled on the dish instead. Chocolate cake with raspberry sorbet was very good.
Overall, the intentions are very good, we see where they are going, but it is very pricey and doesn't quite measure up."

"My wife and I love our annual visit to the Santa Ynez Valley to taste wine and enjoy great food and on this trip we visited Route 246 at Hotel Corque. I started off with oysters "Our Way" and found them to be very fresh and enjoyable, then we started with dinner. My wife had the Hanger Streak with citrus braised cabbage, salt wrinkled potatoes and kimchee and loved it, streak was very tender and cooked perfectly. I had the Lamb Poutine with fries, gravy and cheese curd and it was fantastic! I had heard Poutine was a big thing in Canada and wanted to try it and I wasn't disappointed!
Route 246, we'll be back!"

"Root 246 was fabulous!!! The staff was professional, friendly and efficient. The management was outstanding. We were given a tour of the restaurant, the kitchen and met the chef. Our suggestions were noted. The food was fantastic and the presentation inviting. We will return. Our server Bethany was informative and attentive to our needs without being too intrusive. Richard, the manager was friendly and truly wanted to hear our ideas. He wants to work with the customers to create a good dining experience. We ordered the kale Caesar which was out-of-this world great, especially with the lemon essence. The spring rolls were tasty, I loved the duck inside. The scallops and hangar steak were cooked to perfection."

"I'd been wanting to try Root 246, and decided this past weekend was a perfect time. We were with two other couples. After our dinner, I was giving myself a high five. It was one of those moments when you pray the choice you've made for everyone turns out ok, and it turns out better than you could have ever anticipated!! I LOVE Root 246, and my only wish is that it was closer to my house so I could go more often:)"

"We loved the the look of the restaurant, it came highly recommended so we were excited to eat there. I thought it was a very limited and odd menu. If I wanted to have just a glass of wine and maybe an appetizer that would be the only reason to go there but not dinner."

"We had been wanting to try 246 for awhile. we were delighted and looking forward to going back. I was disappointed that they were out of the wine we wanted but, the food and service was fantastic! The kale Cesar was delicious and the chicken dumplings are anything but as bland as the name would have you think. they are Fantastic!!! Thanks to our waitress for recommending them. We LOVE love love them!
My only dig is that the acoustics make for a pretty noisy environment inside."

"My husband and I ate at Root 246 prior to the Solvang Century. I wish we'd been able to access the menu online as the food was a bit too 'trendy' for what I wanted that night. The salty potatoes were outstanding, the Jidori chicken less so. The flavors & varied temps of the chicken dish were good; the chicken was just a bit tough for my tastes. The wait staff was attentive without being overbearing and a mistake on one of the dishes I ordered was swiftly corrected. Just a bad night for us to be trying experimental dishes."

"Waitress had a very difficult time figuring out what was vegetarian on the menu. She had to go back and ask, and even then, she asked about one plate and still could not point out all the dishes that were available to me. Decent cocktail menu, featuring mostly flavored vodkas, but poured in a lazy way (strained between two glasses rather than using a strainer so there were chunks of ice floating in a martini). Would not return."

"My husband and I dined at Root 246 for our 5 year wedding annivesary and were very impressed by the menu, ambiance and service. Solvang doesn't have many fine dining options and this place definitely fills a void! We had the shortribs, pork sausage flatbread with arrugla and fennel, king crab legs and bone marrow. The shortribs were delicious and the portions were nice. The king crab legs were some of the best we've had! Their wine list is extensive and even though we didn't try the specialty cocktails we noticed the tables around us with lots of fun and festive drink drink choices. The restaurant treated us to a dessert since it was our anniversary but after a very large meal we could only fit in a scoop of raspberry sorbet."

"This restaurant is attached to Hotel Corque, where we were staying on a quick wine country visit with friends. Its new, attractive and has an interesting menu. We tried a couple of appetizers and a variety of entrees. The food was excellent. Portions for entrees were varied. The scallop entree would not have been sufficient on its own as an entree, for even a light eater, while the steak, chicken hamburger were ample. The seats are high, upholstered wing chairs that are a bit better suited to lounging than dining. There are lumbar pillows on the chairs, but its not quite enough. Some of the descriptions on the menu are a bit pretentious - I had a burger that included "classic garniture", I doub the French Laundry uses that term."

"My wife and I USED to love Root 246. That has all changed now since Bradley Ogden, the original chef, has left and the new chef has chosen to take Bradley's masterful menu and change it all around for uninspiring food. The old Caesar salad with poached egg on top, was one of my all time favorite salads, while the fried chicken was a Root 246 specialty. All that is gone now and the restaurant has changed to a boring, predictable, Tapas style restaurant.
Don't fix what isn't broken. Other than our server, who was spectacular, the restaurant is run of the mill.
We are sad to say this, but until they make some changes and bring back the original menu or at least the favorites, we will not be returning to Root 246."

"The restaurant has an upscale decor with a clean, fresh look. Our short ribs were delicious. I know these can be cooked ahead and taste even better when they are. The service was so fast I swear it was faster than McDonald's."
