Peasant is a modern restaurant using century old traditions of cooking with fire. The cuisine is rustic Italian from all regions with concentration on the freshness and purity of the food.
"After having the tripe for a previous course, I considered it for dessert. It was like the most tender veal. As rustic as the dish was it exuded finese. No one ingredient spoke louder than the other."

"Really enjoyed my time at Peasant. Everything was delicious, the wines by the glass were really well-chosen, and the bread pudding was possibly the best I've ever had."

"The food is superb. Love the bread and ricotta that they serve, but be careful not to fill up on that because it's just the beginning of what is a great, memorable meal. Always looking forward to going back after each visit!"

"Hot spot in Nolita - terrific menu, inventive and just different enough. Fresh ricotta and bread were served and wonderful. Had a mozzerella wrapped in ham, baked to golden ooziness appetizer! Of the dinners, only the marguerita pizza was average - a bit soggy towards the middle. The gnocchi with mushrooms was earthy and terrific. The pulled pork was not bbq, but a rich, flavorful dish served infused with creamy potatoes - hard to describe, but terrific. We did not have but saw several grilled whole sea breams that were beautifully prepared and could only imagine how good they were."

"Pasta cooked al dente and very flavourful; Pizza not the "common you find everywhere", but very flavourful. Only downside of restaurant is to have to place your order all at once...cant change your mind and want more after...weird."

"Wine list has Italian wines but not good ones. Markup on wines is 300-500% over retail. The wood burning oven is beautiful but the chef does not know how to use it. Razor clams were loaded with salt and breadcrumbs; tasted like frozen clams oreganata at a diner. The skate was all breadcrumbs and butter and way too much salt. The pasta with langostinos had a thin watery sauce and a pound of salt. The suckling pig was bathed in a mayonnaise cream sauce with potatoes. It tasted like supermarket potato salad with pork strips in it. And the seafood salad appetizer was like a potato salad with cold underboiled seafood. A charming atmosphere but a total failure in both the food and the wine list."

"The service and food at Peasant have lapsed since my last visit. The decor with its burning ovens and Italian coziness is still nice - probably more so in winter - but fish is crazily overcooked, not very nicely presented starters are uninteresting and desserts out of sync with the rest of the meal. Wine list is very average.. Service is friendly enough but noone saya goodbye when you do. All in all OK but not one to put on your a-list."

"Ambiance was fantastic. The food was decent but I have one complaint. I ordered the swordfish because the waiter described it as light, fresh and tasty. The fish was excellent except it was drowning in olive oil - the entire plate was filled with oil and the swordfish was sitting on top if it."

"What could have been a great evening was spoiled by excessive noise. It was impossible to talk to the people on the opposite side of the table without yelling. We simply gave up - ate an average meal and left early."

"horrible, arrogant service led to a pretty poor experience. portions are way too small and significantly overpriced. its a shame because this used to be one of my favorite restaurants in nyc, great ambiance, warm atmosphere nice wine list... i bragged about it all day, ended up being a total flop! would not go back."

"I booked peasant a couple of hours before online. However after we were seated we asked about WIFI access as we needed to check in for our flight home the following day. The girl gave us the code and then fetched drinks, when she returned we said it didn't work, she then checked and advised that they no longer had guest access! We wished she had said this when we asked as we would have gone somewhere else. The food was good, however the service was poor, our waitress had to be asked to take our order, didn't go through the specials, didn't check things were okay with meals. Overall we felt she was a little un-interested as we were only a table of two compared to the table of 6 nearby. Were both very disappointed and wont be returning."

"My group of four were greeted and sat promptly. Our meals were correct, temperatures and numerous changes by one of my guests, were met with great attention by the kitchen. My only gripe during this visit: an over-zealous waiter, who kept interrupting us during our conversations, and his poor recommendations of wines. Mind you, other than those two flaws, he was great."

"Peasant has a rustic, warm atmosphere except for the hard stainless steel dining chairs...not the most comfortable. I had a delicious asparagus appetizer and stuffed baby hen, which was a bit dry. My son and daughter had well-prepared skate. My husband enjoyed the lamb. We all shared a very rich flourless chocolate cake. Although my daughter ran almost an hour late, we began our meal on time. My problem with the place is the rapid pace at which they waited on us. I felt very pressured to move from one course to the next. I left with an upset stomach because of it. What was so odd about this, is that there was no one waiting for our table! If your looking to have a leisurely meal...this is not the place."

"Went for our anniversary. Had to wait for our reservation but they couldn't have been more accomodating we both had dessert on the house! Loved the bar atmosphere. Very fun and lively but warm and inviting on a snowy night. The food was fabulous. Can't wait to go back."

"This was my third time dining at Peasant. I love the ambiance but the food is never great. The best thing about this place is the ricotta and bread to start. From there... the food just doesn't make the cut. It's ok - but not anything special. We had a great waiter and the wine was good and decently priced. The food just lacks flavor."

"My husband and I always look forward to our next visit to Peasant and enjoyed our dinner very much. Our waiter, when asked, suggested a reasonably priced wine that was delicious and was paired well with our main course. We'll be back soon with our friends."

"I just didnt put those 5 stars because it is convenient to do so. I really like this place! I took a friend of mine who believes that I know really good places in the city. I had some pressure on my shoulders! She really loved it! The food was amazing as usual! The octopus, the risotto and the rabbit lasagna was just delicious...The reader might think that I am exaggerating, but I am not. Why would I? Just go and try..."

"Our food was excellent. Our waiter was a little preoccupied. Wish the appetizer options were a bit more exciting. We had the razor clam special, which we loved, but the bocconcini were lack luster. I ordered fish and my father ordered the pork and i was hard to find appetizers that worked for both of us. Too many mozarella/pork based appetizers. The bread was memorable. I liked the wine I had, though the difference in size between my first and second glass was wildly different. the first glass I was poured was probably 3 oz. and the second was nearly twice that. I thought the suckling pig was one of the tastiest things I've had in a long time. The waiter was hesitant to help us to de-bone the fish which seemed snobish."

"As soon as you walk in the door, the aroma of the wood burning fire oven is tantalizing, and it would be a shame not to order anything and everything cooked in it! The suckling pig was, indeed succulent, the skin crisped by the very same oven! Salads were great, and used the most seasonal of lettuces, puntarelle in season is sublime. The one failure was the inedible pear pie, but who needs dessert after a wood roasted meal such as the one peasant offers. Not good to be the king..better to be the peasant!"

"We visited on Feb20th while staying in New York on a week long trip from the UK. We loved the ambience, the service and the food. After being a little disappointed with a few other restaurants this was an absolute delight. The pear tart with hazlenut ice cream was exceptional. Thank you for a lovely evening."

"I always try to go to Peasant when I am in town. My son's college graduation dinner was there as well as my 50th birthday. I consider it a special place. Unfortunately a very loud group of men was seated in the middle of the room and made dining miserable for everyone that night. I heard the man at the table next to us ask the waitress to have them quiet down - didn't help. Our waitress even said she felt like she was screaming when giving us the specials - that's because she was. These men were very inappropriate at the bar before dinner as well.
I order the sardines every time I come. This time they were disappointing. They were soggy. The rest of my meal and my daughter, her boyfriend and her friend's meal - delicious as usua"
