"Decor and ambiance was very nice. Food was fresh and well prepared, yet for some dishes overpriced. Would go back to this restaurant if the staff was more professional and not only 'pleasant' to those guests who ordered three courses and lots of drinks. "This was my second time at Peasant and again it was a great dining experience. The food was very good (I had the seasonal salad and mushroom risotto - both were excellent). Service is also very good - well informed staff - and I love the smell of the wood-burning stove in the kitchen. It adds to the rustic ambience and you feel like you are in someones kitchen. Great atmosphere.

My only negative is that the dining room could use a bit more light and/or larger type on the menus. Reading glasses and a penlight help.

Overall, a great esperience and my out of town colleagues enjoyed it as well."

"Cross this off the list. Too loud, and food was not memorable. We had a 6 PM Reservation and arrived early. We were told we could not come in for a drink at the bar. The chairs are cold, hard metal and not kind to your seat and the noise level is awful. The veal chop was not eatable, way too fatty. We told the server and she said Oh I am sorry. The only good thing was the bread, which they buy and the riccotta cheese which they buy. We had to finally bring our check to the bar to leave. We were very disappointed. Go one block down to BarMarche, much better and very friendly."

"Overall everything was excellent -- service, appetizers, ambiance

"I alway enjoy dining at Peasant. The food was very good and our server was friendly and knowledgeable. My only criticism concerns the menu. The print is too small and is almost impossible to read, especially since the restaurant is so dimly lit."

"The food was terrific, the ricotta spread and warm crusty bread were delightful. Our appetizers were very tasty. We tried the prosciutto and pear - very refreshing - but the pear it itself wasn't great. The orechiette was magical and the four mushroom risotto was very good. The flourless chocolate cake was perfect. Our server chose our grappa, by request, which was delicious. Our server was good but very pretentious, leaving us to feel like complete food morons. She also dictated the timing of our order, which was off putting. Additionally, I felt like we were rushed through our meal. We have three children and were planning on having a nice, relaxing evening."

"Peasant has a warm, lively vibe. The open kitchen in the back with its glowing brick ovens adds to the ambience. I had read that waiters translate the menu for you; ours did not do this, but it wasn't necessary because there werre partial English translations of the dishes. The ricotta that arrives with the bread is delicious, a nice start to the meal. The polpi in purgatorio is spicy and yummy. I had the lamb with polenta, which was very good. My husband had the whole fish; good, but the intense blackening/ broiling process left a slight and indefinably chemical taste. All in all, though, a very plesant experience."

"Experience was mostly good, really nice settings and look/feel of the place. Was easy to get reservations too.
The risotto we ordered was way too salty, ridiculously salty.
The skate was pretty average too.

"I have eaten at peasant 3 times. This last time was one of the worst dining experiences I have ever had. The server was pleasant and attentive enough, but the food for all three of us was really poor. We sent it back for being overly salted and poorly cooked and received replacements that were equally poor. One of the servers was quite rude in the process. I will never eat there again. Really disappointing."

"Food was Fair, but I've had better at Applebee's for a third of the price. Sooo, not a good value food-wise. Our server, who did not seem overly busy, walked by our table 8 times without making eye contact. The bus person working in the area was very good and on two occasions assisted us with our needs (balsamic and salt). She got the hint at that point and refolded my napkin. Nothing to write home about. Not my kind of place."

"Really enjoyed our evening at Peasant. The food was incredible, our waitress was very friendly and very knowledgeable about the menu. She as very helpful with the vegetarian in our group in making sure that her dining experience was on par with the rest of ours. The wine list is very well selected Italian wines and thee dining room is nicely spread out and very well appointed. Will return here for sure!"

"Overall we had a really lovely evening. The decor and menu was a nice change of pace from the more traditional Italian restaurants we usually dine at. "I hate to say, our experience was disappointing. We were sat in a timely manner and bartender/waiter very nice. Our appetizers came out right away and then it was over 30 min. wait for entrees and the food was not great. My friend had to send his entree back because it was not cooked correctly. My pizza, which I remember as fabulous here, was covered in oil. All in all, I would not say the food is worth the prices they charge."

"This is a terrific neighborhood joint. I wish it was in my neighborhood. Nearly all the food we ate was great (one pasta dish was overly salty and rendered unedible) but everything else was good. We were rushed a little but it was a popular place. Surprised to see the menus in both Italian and English. Last time I was there it was only in Italian. I guess the owner broke down to the Zagat reviewers who found the Italian menu pretentious."

"We ate here last night, 1/24/10. The food and service were very good but I feel compelled to write about one aspect that ensured we will never come back. Our reservation was for 7:00PM, which also happens to be the first seating. We arrived slightly less than ten minutes early. A hostess turned us away at the door saying they weren't open yet and we would have to come back in ten minutes. Arriving early is a courtesy and should be encouraged, especially in a city where you lose reservations after 10-15 minutes. An offer to sit at the bar and enjoy a drink until 7:00 should have been made, we went somewhere else and they made the money on our drinks. If you're not open, lock the door or be smart and open your bar up half an hour early."

"We were a large group and had a blast. Great food and service, as usual. The gnocchi last night weren't as good as they'd been in years past (the sauce was different and the gnocchi themselves tasted a little old). I always get the skate, the suckling pig, or the Chilean sea bass (whole grilled). I need to try something different the next time, but each time I'm never disappointed."

"The reservation process was excellent; We arrived early but were accommodated nonetheless.
We were disappointed with the meal however. Our dinner arrived lukewarm at best and the arrangement of the food was awful. My polenta was swimming in a pool of lamb sauce and the garnish of grilled radicchio completely covered my meal. I was in the retail food business for the better part of forty years so I do have a critical eye. That said, I will give Peasant another chance to redeem itself. I do understand that things can go wrong at any given moment but my hope is that the owner will take note of this criticism
and get his kitchen staff to be more attentive as to how food is paired and served properly."

"Love, Love, Love Peasant. Make reservations a good two weeks ahead of time (use OpenTable.com), as it is impossible to just walk in. "Most impressed with it all! Atmosphere was just what I expected. Kitchen was a work of art with the wood burning brick ovens - very much like dining in Northern Italy. Service was attentive and professional. Food was great with many unique dishes not found elsewhere AND resonable prices. Stuffed roasted quail and siuckling pig were cooked perfectly. "The food was very tasty and came in good time. The price was reasonable for food and wine and the atmosphere was very nice. The only complaint was that at the end of the meal when we paid the waitress came back to our table and told us we did not tip enough. It was frustrating because if 20% is expected as she seemed to think, it should be added to the bill. SHe also told us that she does not make a wage at all and that is why it is important for her to recieve tips. I believe we tipped her 13% on a bill that was 180 dollars, however 50 dollars of the bill was wine. We weren't aware that in New York standard was 20%, however we were quickly educatated by her while other dinners looked on. Ruined a nice evening."

"We are from Denmark and had read about the restaurant in a book about cool places in NY. As we were sitting pretty close to the entrance the place was very cold and we were not really part of the restaurants atmosphere. Also it took an hour and a quarter before we received the main course. First time we have had Risotto served on a flat plate.
In general poor service and complete lack of attention from the staff."

"Overall experience was great. Service was very good--staff was very professional and pleasant from the waitress to the serving personnel. "This restaurant (locally sourced products, natural vibe) would benefit from providing adequate variety, quality choices, and a bit of imagination in their menu for the many non-meat-eating customers who could well be attracted to this type of cuisine. Again, the only veg entree on the menu was a pasta dish. Yawn. And we couldn't order a variety of vegetables and beans from the existing entrees to cobble together an entree because the kitchen would "run out of them because they go with the other dishes". Your customers are your guests, and you need to put your energy into providing all of them with a reason to enjoy your product enough to want to return, especially in this economy."

"The best part of Peasant is the ricotta and bread that comes complimentary with the meal. Dining during the holidays should have been a pleasant, warming experience with the brick oven etc, but the front end of the restaurant, the hostesses, were cold and nasty-although that word is doing them a favor. Why would anyone want to go to a restaurant, let alone pay money for hostile, cold service? I'll hang on to my money and skip Peasant for the future. I can cook better Italian at home, go to Paolos and not have the hassle. I should add, the bartender was very service oriented and friendly."

"What makes Peasant attractive is its wonderful food, creative, delicious, and above all comforting. This is not reflected in the service or the discomfort of its dining room. Everything about the place is the antithesis of the "come and taste, stay and savor" menu. Wooden chairs and banquettes without cushions may fit in with the shabby-chic decor, but it is far from comfortable. The wait staff was attentive, but our first course came out within 2 minutes of placing an order. Plates were removed while we were still chewing. Dessert menus were on the table before the second course was cleared. Feeling harried, I noticed that on our way out, they had already seated another party before we had our coats. SLOW DOWN!"

"Wonderful time except that there was a very long gap between our apps and entrees. It might have been 30 minutes or so. Our waitress wasn't very apologetic, seemed like she's just disappeared. But otherwise, delicious and very romantic, fun, cozy atmosphere, an unexpected find in Nolita."

"Great food that was expertly prepared, but out server was unfriendly and distant during the entire meal. At the end of the meal we submitted several hundred dollars in cash with a request to charge the rest. The server brought back a charge slip for the entire amount of the check, then offered no apology for his mistake. I spoke with the manager, who did apologize, but did so in a condescending manner and told me "If you didn't like your treatment here, just don't come back". Unacceptable."

"The razor clam appetizer was slightly gritty which is always a bummer. The suckling pig which the waitress touted as amazing was really dry and flavorless but my friend's lamb was awesome. Waitress walked by several times and observed I wasn't touching my plate and not once came over to ask if the food was ok. Then the host came by after my friend was done and offered to replace my entree. Too little too late. Loved the all Italian wine list but too bad my entree was a disappointment and the staff dealt with it poorly."

"Peasant is fantastic. The restaurant is gorgeous: rustic and glowing from the open brick oven in the back and the candlelit tables. Exposed brick walls and modern chairs give it a hip feel without detracting from its warmth and charm. The service was expert and the prices were surprisingly low for the quality of the food and location. Delicious, freshly made ricotta cheese arrived at the table with a crusty, delicious boule. My appetizer was burrata cheese with oven-roasted tomatoes, roasted right on their vines. The creaminess of the cheese paired perfectly with the sweetness of the tomatoes. For an entree, I had pumpkin gnocchi with chanterelles. Sublime. The pumpkin tart we had for dessert was perfect. And don't miss the house prosecco!"

"Octopus appetizer and skate entree were both good (octopus in particular). The cuttlefish appetizer was way too fishy and the suckling pig entree was chewy and lacking in flavor. The restaurant has a very nice vibe- somewhat romantic and rustic- yet they have these metal chairs that are very uncomfortable. There is a wine bar downstairs and have a feeling that is the better way to go."
