"This was my second time here and both times have been great. They have a good sized brunch menu and good cocktails. I will definitely be coming back again. The place is small and I think there is only one table that fits more than 4 people. The first time I came here was with a group of 6 - I was lucky that a large party had apparently just cancelled their reservation, so we were seated right away - but I would definitely recommend a reservation."

"The Buttery was charming , friendly , and very cozy. Had the beet and goat cheese salad........excellent . Unfortunately the beef bourguinon, the recommendation of the bartender, was rather dry and overcooked. I was rather disappointed with it.

"My daughter and I enjoyed everything about the South End Buttery. They were flexible when we had to change our reservations. and the basement is snug and comfortable.We had mushroom mac and cheese-fantastic The mussels were absolutely wonderful-we would recommend them to anyone. e had the eggplant, which we both enjoyed but it was very filling. My daughter loved the little cupcakes even though we didn't have any room to put them in our tummies. Ambiance was great, cost was reasonable."

"Not everyone can walk for 6 minutes and reach the Buttery, but fortunately my family now can. Moving to the South End puts you in close proximity to lots of good restaurants. You want to try them all, but some are going to be the ones you keep coming back to. South End Buttery is one of those - we stop in there for coffee, lunch, snacks and now, dinner. Never does it disappoint. The food is delicious, inventive and priced reasonably. The dinner service is much calmer than the daytime frenzy and its tucked away, downstairs dining room adds to the experience."

"It is a very nice place in a lovely neighborhood. Despite I think it was a bit of a hassle to make the reservation providing a credit car, it was worth it. The food was very good and the staff very kind. We enjoyed a lot and definitely will come back soon!"

"Great food, great service. This was my first time to the restaurant and I found the entrance difficult to figure out. Could be a little more clear on where to enter the restaurant versus the cafe upstairs. Additionally, the music that was playing was very odd and a huge mixture of genres. At one point a Christmas song was playing. Who knows, but it definitely didn't ruin our evening. I'll definitely be back as this is a great place."

"Service was excellent and the ambiance was very soothing, friendly. the food is good but not memorable. I did have salmon which came with parsnips. I don't like parsnips so asked for cauliflower instead. My friend had the special fish and chips which was excellent. Too bad I can't eat fried food, I would have ordered it. Took us 30 mins to find parking. They held our table on Friday night (I had told them we had arrived but were looking for parking) and did not rush us through our meal. At the end of the evening, went in the front - was give a chocolate delicacy at the end of the evening. Well worth the trip in from JP and WR and look forward to returning."

"We were seated at a table downstairs in the hallway between the stairs and the main seating room. It was like sitting in a storage basement and we were practically on top of the people sitting next to us. We had to yell over their conversation and the noise from the serving station that was right next to us. The food was fantastic but I won't return. There are a number of excellent restaurants in the South End serving high quality food and The Buttery's dishes were not so unique so as to overcome the atrocious seating. If I wanted to sit in a cramped cellar, I can do that at home."

"Went to South End Buttery for dinner based on a recommendation from my daughter (it's one of her favorite restaurants). It didn't disappoint. The restaurant is small but the food was great. I'm on a veggie burger kick, so I tried their veggie burger, which was based on chick peas and a bunch of other things...... innovative and delicious, plus it came with a scrumptious mayonnaise based sauce. My colleagues had more "normal dishes", like meat loaf, trout and chicken. All were scrumptious. For dessert we shared a pear soaked in something delicious (so it came out red) - it was spicy, savory and eaten quickly. We also had their sunday, which was also great. All-in-all, a great place."

"Brunch on a Saturday with a reservation for 5. Was seated right away. The french fries are excellent: crispy outside and warm starchy inside. Eat them with the aioli; both are terrific. The brioche french toast is nice and fluffy. The Angus cheeseburger and the crab cake sandwich were both good, however the arugula salad with the crab cake was better than the greens that came with the burger."

"The food at South End Buttery never disappoints, especially the pancakes with fresh berries and a side of home fries. The pancakes are light and fluffy. The home fries are a small bite of heaven - they are not your average home fries, but instead are crisy/fried on the outside, but soft and potatoey on the inside. While the food here does not disappoint, this time our server did. I am not usually picky about service, but between not bringing milk or cream for the coffee and practically ignoring us the entire time, it seemed evident that we were not her favorite customers. We will go back to South End Buttery and recommend it to others in spite of the service this time around. We have had better experiences in the past here."

"Trying hard and failing, especially given the high-ish prices. Following the uninspired caesar salad was the supposed 48-hour brined pork rib chop, which was small, tough, and flavorless, not helped in the least by the small hill of golden raisins heaped on top (they called it chutney; it wasn't). Wine list was basic and overpriced (not unusual for the South End). The setting in the stone-walled basement was cozy and comfortable; especially nice on a cold later winter evening was the gas fireplace casting a warm glow on the guests. But can't imagine the same space being satisfying during warmer times of the year. If I go back to this place, it'll be solely for the few things they do well: espresso drinks and breakfast pastries."

"I understand most restaurants in the South End are small and cramped but having to squeeze in between tables was a little annoying. I went for brunch and got the scrambled eggs with salmon. Salmon was fresh but the eggs weren't fluffy and not that great. However, our waitress was nice. I saw a runner bring the wrong food to a table. Then same runner walked past our table with our food and had to back track. Seemed unorganized. Probably would not go back."

"Small, but you don't feel like the next table is on top of you, and I thought it was quiet and made for easy conversation. The food was sensational, a great apple salad, salmon cooked perfectly, and I loved their take on mussels. Lots to choose from for interesting, if not outrageous, eating. We'll be back."

"This was our second brunch at the Buttery. Both times the service was excellent and the food wonderful. Their take on huevos rancheros is special, and the breakfast tart was great. But we would keep coming back just for the home fries. The room in the basement is a bit cramped and the noise level high, but these are minor considerations when the food and staff are so good."

"Our group of 6 had a great time at dinner! They really shift the ambiance beautifully - you almost wouldn't recognize it compared to the daytime bakery. The vibe is classy but laid back. Upstairs the large windows offer a view of beautiful South End buildings, and the Prudential tower; downstairs is a cozy brick cave.Service was responsive without being intrusive. We hung out at te cafe bar in front (the back bar was full) and then were seated early. They configure the upstairs tables well for groups -- lots of space but still intimate and lively.The cocktails were outstanding, and everyone lived their entrees (chicken, pork, mussels, trout, prawn curry). The Parmesan fries are insane, the calimari perfectly cooked. Beautiful!"

"We had an awesome brunch! The eggs benedict was scrumptious and the french toast was delicious. The strawberry cream was addictive! The only downside was that it was incredibly loud (a loud group of 6 right next to us) and since we were seated next to the fireplace it got to be scorching! The food made up for it though."

"Food was very good and menu selections diverse. I made a dinner reservation and ended up at a high top table in the bar area. Would have expected that with a reservation I'd at least have a "real" table. Service was friendly, but the 1/2 hour gap between starters and main course left us wondering if we'd been forgotten, and we didn't have time to try the desserts, which looked enticing."

"The South End Buttery serves excellent food.
It suffers from being a cafe trying to be a restaurant resulting in cramped awkward conditions. This includes rooms with horrible acoustics that get way too loud, tables in corridors and limited space to wait when your reservation is invariably not ready at the time you had booked for.
The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable, though often rushed.
On the latest visit the food was excellent as usual with some great new seasonal additions to the menu. I had one cocktail served up with flat soda and had no issue in the waiter having it replaced. The food helped us forget the wait, the cramped conditions, and the initial issue with the drink."
