"While we have some wonderful restaurants in Minnesota, not all of them stand out as an experience that consistently provides inviting and friendly service, and a flavorful menu to choose from. This is the kind of restaurant that you keep coming back to and bringing others to because of what it has to offer."

"FACES was perfect for our family, prior to graduation at Roy Wilkins. It was quiet because we had an early dinner. Their food is prepared by a wonderful chef, the food is local/organic/fresh. It worked perfectly for the special diet requests that we had. The paella was amazing, so was the salad with asian tuna salad on it. The greens were so wonderful and the dressing could not have been better. The staff treated our graduate with special attention and she was loving it! We will be back for other special occasions or just for the treat of eating such amazing food!"

"My wife and I ventured across the river to visit Faces last Saturday evening since we had heard some good things about the restaurant and the owner, David Fhima. We are glad we did! From the moment we arrived, we enjoyed the ambiance of the place. The wine bar and restaurant styling is quite appealing. The tables are spaced comfortably so that you don't feel crowded. The staff is charming. The food was tremendous. The wine list contained some very nice wines that were priced right. My wife had the Pil Pil Tangine and I had the Paella Valencia. We enjoyed tastes that were absolutely delightful. We capped off the evening with some wonderful desserts. Thank you for a wonderful evening! We will definitely be back."

"Showed up on a Sunday night. Very few people there, but it still took 10 minutes to have anyone at the hostess stand acknowledge our presence. Noticed the next two groups had the same problem.
Server, though pleasant, wasn't quite with it - couldn't get any cues when we needed assistance or help. We were there 35 minutes before we had our wine. We ordered a cheese and cold cut tray to start with. THought it would be a little more sophisticated than, yes, cheese and cold cuts. Asked the server what the cheeses were and he pointed to one and said it was camembert - I think he was flustered when I told him it most certainly wasn't camembert.
The tagine food was good, though not outstanding. Ambience is late 1980's... Won't be back."

"We're new to Mears Park, and were delighted to discover Faces. The setting right across from the park provides entertainment value. The night we were there, we witnessed a giant black "dog" (from the Black Dog Cafe) marching through the park, attracting a crowd. The service was very friendly and efficient; our waiter added fresh asparagas to my meal gratis when I asked him if the dish included it. The food was very carefully prepared, fully seasoned with sufficient but reasonable portions. All in all, a relaxing time."

"I really like this restaurant. We were 2 adults and 3 children. The buffet had some good and medicore offerings. The chicken was fantastic. The ham was dry. The hashbrowns were okay and the bacon overcooked. We ordered French toast from the kitchen and it was wonderful. The prime rib was cooked to order, tasty, but a bit skimpy on the porttion The dessert offerings were simply amazing. The best chocolate covered straberries ever. Cream puffs and eclairs were excellent. Assorted truffles were a taste sensation."

"$80-$90 for two people on a brunch with very few options. Will not be returning to this place. Our service was great though and I don't want to overlook that."

"Last year for Mother's Day, we got a late seating. The food was luke warm, sparse, and not so appetizing. I chalked it up as the result of being at the end of the Brunch. This year, we got in at the first seating, 10:15. The Buffet was lacking: hash-browns were cold and stringy; ham overdone and dry; bacon warmer was empty; rolled salmon was great; pepper vegetables were OK. Eggs were 'made to order' from your table. My wife and daughter ordered eggs over easy and I ordered a 3 egg omelet with med. rare prime rib side dish. The eggs came out 30 minutes later, hard, and only warm at best. My prime rib sidedish was overcooked and greasy. I never received my omelet. The pastries are Excellent. ."

"First off the service was outstanding. The happy hour apps and house wines were not very good at all. So we were worried about the entrée. We selected the seafood Tangine, which was actually very good. Could have been a bit larger portion considering the price. Also they only had two servers on; I don't think they planned for more people being at the concert that night."

"Even though we had an early evening reservation, out table was located near the walk area that service staff used and they were hurrying by constantly - the waiters were managing in a rush and service delay matter. Waiter was friendly and apologetic about being short staffed."

"We had a nice time at Faces. The food was really good. Our server was very nice but the service was a bit slow. They set the wine bucket far enough away from our table that the expectation was that the server would be stopping by to keep the glasses filled. I think he filled our glasses once and I ended up getting out of my seat a couple of times to get wine for my wife and I. The chef was speaking to a group of people as we were leaving and he made it a point to stop us and ask how our meal was. Again, the food was great. The service was not bad, but for a $100 meal, I expected a little better. I think it is probably worth at least one more try."

"We had a great time sharing excellent food and visiting with friends. The drawback was being seated by the atrium which had a fashion show event. We frequently had models standing for extended periods very close to our table and noise that overflowed from event. Would definitely sit somewhere else next time."

"The reviews for this restaurant made me hope for a lot. I wanted to be more impressed with the food. The presentation was great, but I found it falling short of having the associated flavor and texture wow factor. I had the Tagine seafood dish, and although being rich in different spices, just did not find it a culinary adventure. Would I try the restaurant again - Yes, but I would opt for something more hearty where the Moroccan spices get to shine more."

"Mediocre food but the real negative was the indifferent service. Our waiter had to be flagged for drink order, then left with only getting part of the table. He never returned to see if anything additional was needed. He dropped the bill on the table without asking about coffee, dessert.... It has a lovely view but the service was sub par, particularly in a restaurant that wasn't busy."

"After several years of scouring for any remnants of the formerly great dining scene in downtown St Paul -- going back more than a decade after which it was ruined by the business climate created by the post-Norm Coleman mayors -- I find this. Yes, the St Paul, Pazzaluna, Kincaids, etc are nice, but outside of Heartland, the east side needs a new gem, and this is it. Clearly, they have had growing pains. But any restaurant that wants to attract customers in this part of town (that feels often like East Germany in the 1960s -- and that's during the DAY) has to do it a bit better than most. Mr Fhima deserves our attention. The food was way beyond my expectations and service was outstanding. Parking? Talk to the mayor."

"We really wanted to like Faces Mears Park, but after our last visit, we probably won't be going back there for food any time soon. We went there for the happy hour specials, and when my wife ordered a simple pizza with jalapenos and onions, she got a pizza with pepperoncini's on it, and told flatly by the waiter that the chef said they were jalapenos. That sort of response damaged the whole dining experience, even if it was just a simple happy hour appetizer. The customer service attitude is just poor and indifferent."

"Service was a bit slow for a Sunday evening and it was not all that busy. We had to wait to be seated and then also to be waited on. Only 2 servers were attending to tables. We ordered the Monte Christo and a burger with blue cheese and bacon. We asked for the burger to be medium...it was well done and very dry. The Monte Christo was wonderful and we would recommend that. The fries were great, but the side salad left a lot to be desired. I wouldn't go back necessarily. Good beer choices, but the food was hit or miss."

"The owner chef greeted our table of 6. My friends had not been there before so it was quite welcoming. The service was outstanding! The staff was quite accommodating and took time to answer all questions - very knowledgeable. The tangines were quite popular with all tables, not just ours. They added a lovley scent to the air. Two of my friends ordered the vegetable tangine and said the variety of flavors was amazing (they are not vegetarians either). We plan to return."

"This was the worst brunch I've ever been to. The ham was awful, it was mushy and tasteless. The french toast wasn't even french toast, the egg didn't soak in at at, it was just a hunk of french baguette quickly dipped in egg so it didn't have time to soak in (or soften up the crust). I couldn't cut through the french toast without a a steak knife. Bacon was mostly uncooked. The only decent part was the desert."

"Our Easter brunch was terrible: ham overcooked to the point of being mushy; empty containers; no vegetable dishes; only 2 egg options (Spanish omlette & scrambled); omlette significantly over-salted; potatoes lightly cooked in oil (not fried); salad greens not entirely fresh; only one salad dressing; no butter for breads; no jelly for croissant; ice in the orange juice; coffee not hot; all food at room temperature, including beef; no syrup for French toast; French toast was just big hunks of bread dusted with powdered sugar; far too many breads. On the plus side, this would have made a great dessert buffet as there were two full tables of tasty desserts."

"The food was very good. We had the Salmon Risotto and the Sesame Ahi Tuna - both were excellent. The tuna was seared perfectly. The mussels were also very good. The service was excellent. We were there late on a weekday so it was pretty quiet. The restaurant in at the base of a large apartment building. I felt as if I was dining in a hotel restaurant. Overall we had a nice time and I would try it again."

"Came for the fixed 5-course tasting offering with wine pairing. The first 3 courses were very good, were delivered promptly, and arrived with detailed descriptions from both the server and the chef. The fourth course took 35 minutes to show up. The spicy seafood tagine arrived with only two of the three described seafood items. When the chef was asked about this he brushed it off with "they must have forgotten". Found it curious that despite espousing sustainable, local ingredients they offered Chilean sea bass (aka, patagonian toothfish) and ocean farmed salmon. Both are on the "Avoid" list from Seafood Watch developed by the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Friends don't let friends eat farmed fish!"

"Worst Paella ever! Dry with a small amount chicken and extremely salty. I assume Fhima did not prepare this himself. The prices are way too high for the quality of food and service.

"This place was a letdown from the beginning. If you're swanky enough to be offering a $125 Valentine's day dinner, the hostess should not be wearing jeans while children manage the coat check.
The waitress was VERY friendly and courteous, but didn't know the menu. We ordered a bottle of wine and she struggled to open it in front of us for a couple minutes. You can't uncork a bottle with 1/2" of the corkscrew embedded and we feared we'd have to request another bottle expecting the cork to break.
The cheese plate was NOT worth $18 compared to similar restaurants, the pasta plate had NO presentation and was more soupy than saucy. We ALWAYS get dessert, but after the entrees we just had to give up on the place. This place will clo"

"Food & the presentation was excellent!!! Unfortunately, the service was surprisingly poor. Servers all seemed relatively new at the job (all under 25, I bet) and were visibly flustered at trying to keep orders straight and attending to the needs of the patrons. On a few occasions the waiter actually bumped into us as he rushed from table to table. The pre-dinner scotch I ordered from the list wasn't available, so I was served a thimble-sized portion of an alternate. Rather disappointing."

"My wife & I scheduled a last minute 9:00pm reservation on a busy Valentine's Day. It took quite a while to initially get attn to check in. Heard the owner snapping/cussing in kitchen-amusing but odd. We were given house champagne & waited an hour at the bar... Bartender was nice, but needs more training. I felt I worked too hard to get his attn for each round I bought! When we were finally seated, we appreciated the restaurant better. My wife sat facing Mears park & we were served by a waitress with a beautiful smile & very friendly spirit. The food was good, the drinks made the outing better, & desert was ok. I'm a tough critic & didn't appreciate the unexpected wait with a reservation, but I'd consider going again on a less busy night."
