"Food was good, steak was chared on top which i'm not a fan of, MR was a little too rare for me...server didn't know his menu, had to go back and check a few times on ingredient list. Desert was good-creme brule and chocolate cake (we each had one as well as a steak and ap). Enjoyed the fact the meat was grass fed."

"Took a group of 7 business colleagues. The food is very good with a good mix for everyone. Excellent wine choices. They were not busy. Our server was very nice but not very attentive. Drink service was slow. She could have sold more and received a better tip with a little more attention."

"We had a reservation for Sat. evening at Rare and after reading the mixed reviews prior to coming in, I wasn't sure exactly what to expect. However, from the moment we walked in we were promptly seated and our server was with us almost immediately. She was very attentive throughout our entire meal and the food and drinks came quickly, so perhaps they have made some positive improvements, given the amount of reviews citing slow service. The food was excellent as well. I had a variety of sushi items and my husband had the NY strip steak. He thought the steak was tender and flavorful and cooked perfectly. The vegetable medley side with it was very good as well. The sushi was excellent and well priced. I would not hesitate to come back!"

"I really enjoyed our appetizers. We had the salmon cakes, calamari, seafood ceviche, and tuna tataki. My least favorite of them all were the seafood ceviche (kind of bland) however it was also next to one of the best calamari I have ever had (lightly breaded, thick tender pieces with excellent sauce), the salmon cakes were delicious as well, and the tuna tataki was wonderful (nothing extraordinary, but tuna tataki is always good). For dinner we had the crunchy spice salmon roll and the duck breast.
Our server was very nice and attentative. The only thing that I thought would make the night better is if they had some sort of outside seating but only because it was the first 70 degree day in Minnesota :)"

"Friday lunch with customers. The Hangar steak and sides were great,done perfectly and exhibited great knowledge of the meat and veggies..( I didnt tell them but it is my meat they use..) The burgers were a disaster, all four of them..all overcooked, lost the flavor totally, the buns were old, hard and only two of us could eat them or would eat them.
Parking is a downntown dilemna of course and their valet system worked fine. but given how they prepared the food and used old bakery goods I would not recommend this ."

"Best option is the weekly happy hour - a generous 3:00 - 6:30 PM (M-F). Unless you are staying at the hotel, I would go for drinks and apps only. Nice vibe. Frankly, you can get a better dinner at many other downtown restaurants. Decent wine at HH - $3 and the $5 sushi rolls are a good deal."

"Excellent sushi! If I could afford to I would eat off the sushi menu every day of my life, it is incredibly fresh tasting and I could keep going on and on but you just have to try it to understand. Make sure to eat all of your wasabi too, its the best!!"

"Go for Happy Hour....it was the best!! Fantastic food and wine in a beautiful atmosphere for super cheap! You can get Happy Hour prices in the whole restaurant (not just in the bar) and it goes until 6:30 PM....WOW! It was a little noisier in the main dining/bar area. But there is a quiet room at the back with about 10 tables that is super quiet and romantic. We just did sushi and it was very good. Service was just fine....didn't take forever as some have mentioned. We will definitely be back!"

"The food is good, without tasting amazing. I think the waitperson intentionally ordered one thing that was double of cost of what I really ordered. I didn't notice the mistake until I got home! In addition to ordering a larger sushi roll for me, than what I had really ordered, she also brought us two of the hot saki. That was too much for us! We should have had two cups and one carafe of saki. So, I believe she did what she could to raise our total bill."

"Calamari. This place had the best calamari I have ever had. It was salty and spicy and perfect. The brussel sprouts were just okay, and I would not recommend them to someone who does not particularly like cabbage. Barbette's are much, much better. The sushi was good but not great. I would recommend other places like Kona Grill if that is the only item desired on the table.
However, Rare had a far superior atmosphere than most other places I have been to. For this reason alone, I would recommend it. They have great "flights" of drinks that, for me, made the night fun. You can easily get away with spending $20 for yourself, but if you go crazy, it is easy to spend $50 as well."

"We went for a small birthday party. We are sushi addicts but some in our party are not so it was nice for them to have steak and other options too. The sushi was good and fresh with some new rolls we had not tried before but the selection was pretty limited.
It was a Tuesday at 8pm and it was not crowded but one table in the corner made plenty of noise for all. People ranged from workout wear to suits and dresses.

"We went here with a Groupon and it was great! Drinks, appetizer (chicken potstickers), entree (filet mignon, ribeye), dessert (flourless chocolate cake) were all amazoing!!! The steaks had great flavor, I had the glazed carrots and my hubby had the brussel sprouts, and we both had the whip tatoes and everything was really good! The brussel sprouts were a little burnt on some sides from sauteing, but they were still good."

"Great grass fed steak at a reasonable price! Service is always friendly. This restaurant is in a hotel, and not always very busy. We go with our kids (ages 11 and 14) for special celebrations and they love it and are always treated well. Thursday nights are busier due to happy hour specials."

"We love the food here, particularly the salmon, BUT during our past two visits the service has been non-existent. Prior to this visit, we waited 45 minutes between our drinks and dinner with no one coming to our table. When we asked a busboy to send over our server he returned several minutes later saying the server was too busy to see us right now.
On this visit, we waited 15 minutes after being seated and no one showed up to take our drink order or even say they would be with us shortly.
We have removed this restaurant from our list."

"We truly had a wonderful experience! Our server was very good. The sushi was so fresh. I went out of my box...and tried teh sea weed salad, so glad i did! Most of all, the steak was perfection. We have been to a number of steak places and have been disappointed over and over. We both prefer a rare steak and find it amazing that it is so difficult to find.

"Service was excellent, food was excellent. Lighting was poor, many people were using their cell phone lights in order to read the menu. I would recommend this restaurant to anybody, just look at the menu online before you go so you have an idea of what you want if you have troubles reading in low light."

"We had a reservation on a Friday night and were seated promptly. The bar was hopping since it was happy hour, but a bonus is that you can order happy hour specials throughout the entire restaurant (and you can use a groupon on happy hour specials too). Our server was very attentive and friendly. We only ordered sushi and apps, so I can't vouch for the dinner menu, but the sushi was very good. The fish was fresh and the flavors very good. They have excellent happy hour deals ($5 rolls, $3 drinks, etc) so I will definitely go back for happy hour very soon."

"My wife and I have considered this our favorite restaurant - the food is very good. However, on the visit the service was disappointing. We were left alone for more than 30 minutes, despite efforts to get our server to come to our table.
We will probably not visit Rare as much as we used to."

"Rare is a great restaurant for groups as well as couples. It has a great atmosphere and the music is at a level where you can hear the person across the table, which I always like. We started off with the wine of the month, Justin, and the 4 of us in the party really enjoyed it. We ordered several appetizers and sushi rolls for the middle of the table for our dinner. The appetizers we enjoyed most were the calamari and the salmon cakes. These dishes were absolutely delicious- light and crispy, full of flavor. The sushi rolls, crispy and crunchy salmon and tuna sushi rolls were full of flavor as well. Rare is a great place to have a wonderful dinner."

"We dined at Rare downtown on 2/17/13. It was our first time there. We both chose the all-you-can-eat Sushi for $30. We ordered a couple of 2 Gingers drinks, Miso soup and pot stickers to start. It was a long wait for the drinks because they withheld them until the pot stickers were ready(why?). The sushi rolls were average. The nigiri was excellent. However, I've been to other AYCE sushi places and there are far more choices at places like Kyoto. No dessert selections - not even green tea ice cream. Only three Maki rolls to choose from. Service was slow. It took a long time for each order to reach the table. Our reservation was at 6 and we didn't leave until 8:15PM."
