"The restaurant description is a "stylish take" on the on the steakhouse. It's a modern, contemporary setting and a cool place to take a date. We found the wait staff was attentive without being intrusive or hovering. I will say that upon leaving the hostess went far above and beyond to get us a cab on a difficult Friday night - running down the street and standing out in the cold to hail us a ride.
The food was good but not notable. The romaine salad, their take on a Caesar, was bland with the lettuce luke warm. We had the boneless ribeye and a bone in NY, both medium. The steaks were prepared as requested - slightly red in the center but were unremarkably seasoned and very average tasting.
In sum, cool décor but an average meal."

"I cannot speak highly enough of 5A5! My boyfriend and I were celebrating our anniversary and we requested private seating or a private booth. The request was met perfectly and set the tone for the evening. Our waitress, Leila, was knowledgable, attentive, and incredibly warm during the entire evening. We were given two or three plates, compliments of the chef, and the food was absolutely incredibly. We both got the filets and they were cooked perfectly, as were our other courses. The music in the background provided a wonderful setting without being overwhelming. I would recommend this restaurant without hesitation and will definitely be returning!"

"This was my first time to 5A5. I'd made a reservation for 8, but had a couple of extras decide they wanted to come. I called and they easily accommodated moving my group up to 10 by pushing my reservation back 15 minutes. When we arrived, we actually ended up with 11 plus a baby! The staff didn't blink. They were very accommodating.
I was surprised by the live pianist in the bar area and really enjoyed that while we waited for our whole party to gather.
The waiter was spot on and easy going with a group so large. The food was good. A little pricey for a slightly above average meal. But, it was fun that it was well worth it!
They even brought out a few extras for the table to nibble on. Plus they brought bday treats with candles!"

"I wasn't sure how to "score" this place, so it's best to read this instead of focusing on the actual scores. The menu did not have enough options for me in terms of the non-entrees. The food was very good but our experience was definitely soured by the CONSTANT interruptions from the wait staff. It was over the top. Too much attention. Great restaurants know how to service you without making you feel like they are on top of you every 5 minutes. Nuff said.
I did find the bartender to be super friendly and warm. And as I said, the actual food was very good. Lobster appetizer is amazing and the meats are excellent. Will go back again but I will warn the waiter in advance to give us some space."

"We took our son and friends to celebrate his 18th birthday. It's definitely an upscale restaurant and a great experience. The ambiance is understated elegance and contemporary with a great live piano as background music. The food is very, very good with an Asian touch and the service is excellent. They did a superb job of accommodating a special food need for one member of the party and in general, the service was exceptionally attentive without being intrusive. The quality of the steak was excellent and the a great choice for meat lovers who are looking for a contemporary take on a steakhouse."

"San Fran has no shortage of good restaurants. We went here based on the hotel concierge recommendation "with a vibrant ambiance". Glad we did. Our server was excellent - friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. The manager even came by a few times to greet us. I had the wagyu sashimi, kona kampachi cerviche. The table also had steak and tataki duo for mains, along with truffle fries, swiss chard and muushroom as sides. All were excellent - definitely beyond my expectations."

"Steaks were overpriced and they did not even have steak knives! I asked for a steak knife because it was so difficult to cut through and they gave me the same type of knife (butter knife) I ordered my steak medium rare and it came out medium well. Flavor wasn't great either. Service was great and they even brought a dessert over because they knew we were celebrating a birthday. I would not be back because the food was way overpriced."

"While we had a good time here at 5A5, I was a bit disappointed with the level of noise in the restaurant. It was very loud.So much so that at a table of 4 we had to scream to hear each other. Not the best combo for a nice dinner. The food was good, but not at the level I was expecting from and ex-Alexander's chef. I've been to Alexander's in Cupertino (many, many times) and while this was great, it was not on their level. I had to ask three to have our water filled up, the noise was out of control, especially with a large group of guys (around 12) yelling and screaming throughout dinner like it was their frat party reunion. Perhaps this was not the fault of the restaurant booking such a party and more on the patrons' behavior."

"5A5 is okay. I wouldn't avoid it if someone suggests going back but it won't be high on my list to suggest. The menu has good options, execution is good but not great in terms of flavor. I'm a big fan of salt, but most of our dishes had too much even for me. Perhaps the Wague steaks are fantastic but at roughly $200 for the smallest serving I'm unlikely to be trying them unless you are buying. The place was cold when we arrived (early dinner, 7 or so) and the A/C was blowing so hard it seemed like the doors were wide open.... had to wear my jacked for a while. The place is funky inside with round dinning area, super unique."

One table of loud diners ruined it for all of the tables around us and while the manager asked them several times to lower their boisterous noises the table continued to ruin conversation level talking for others. Management should have asked them to leave. Everyone in the entire restaurant applauded as the rowdy group finally paid up and left. If I had paid a babysitter to enjoy my evening out I would have asked management of 5A5 to pay for my meal AND the sitter. The experience was definitely not a good one."

"Started off with some great happy hour appetizers. Had a nice booth, and we all ordered rib eyes. This was the best RibEye in my life. It was tender, not too fatty, well aged. Our waitress was fabulous, and constantly filled our ice teas, wine glasses, etc. Everyone in the restaurant was very service oriented. We'll definitely be back!!"

"Wanted to try based on the Kobe beef. It's real, from Japan, not just the technique. Served @ $30 an oz in 4oz increments. DELISH!!! Appetizers were great as well. You're going to pay, but it's a great experience. I brought my own wine. 1st 2 corkage @ $20/bottle. Don't bring just any wine. Look at the wine list and see if you can get it cheaper and bring it in. That's the way to go. Got to see Fmr. Mayor Willie Brown dining in as well."

"I was simply not impressed with this restaurant from the beginning to end. I dropped almost $300 for two people and have spent half that at other restaurants and had a much better experience. The hostess managing the reservations was a total sourpuss. Our server literally argued with us the whole time about how our experience was going. He was trying to be pleasant but came off as overly aggressive. The hard up sell on the wagyu beef is inappropriate. I know what wagyu beef is. If I wanted it, I would've ordered it. Their wine list leaves A LOT to be desired. The cocktails were good, and the dessert was the best part of the meal. This place is way overrated. Spend your money somewhere else."

"My son and I ordered boneless rib eye steaks and were served what seemed to be rump roast; we sent it back. Manager came over and tried to explain that we didn't know our cuts of meat. He brought over two uncooked rib-eyes which were actually rib-eyes and they were very tasty.
However, trying to boost margins by not serving what was ordered is WRONG! Picked on the wrong guys...we've been cooking rib-eyes for decades. Watch out at A5A...you have to keep them on their toes!"
