"We came to celebrate a 50th birthday and had the tasting menu with wine pairings. The food was terrific, the wine pairings very nice, and the service attentive. Sadly, they ran out of bread by 8 pm. Would definitely recommend this place for a special occasion."

"Very small entre portions for the price charged, especially the black cod at $34.00. Coffee was $5.00 for one small cup (served in an individual container, but the beverage hardly filled the coffee cup). Herbal tea was also $5.00, served in a larger tea pot. The weekly Sunday price fixe menu had a few strange combinations of salad items for the first course; the entre was good, and the dessert was adequate. Service was very elegant and food was graciously presented. Parking is very limited."

"We were very excited to get a reservation for dinner because we had heard so many nice things about the restaurant. When we arrived for dinner our table was waiting for us and the staff was very pleasant. I should add there were 7 of us for dinner. Our waiter came by to check on us for drinks and to tell us about the menu. I was very surprised that the corking fee here was $20.00. Come on this is wine country ! After we placed our order and the food finally made it to the table we did not see the waiter until it was time for him to bring the bill. I'm not sure what the problem was, but I feel as though because we were a party of 6 or more and since he was guaranteed a 20% gratuity he did not have really worry about our table.

"After reading many favorable reviews of the Applewood Inn, my husband and I were eager to have a wonderful meal at this establishment. Unfortunately we were extremely displeased with our experience and would never recommend this place to anyone we know. I ordered the Bass. The serving consisted of two small bites of fish in a bland broth. Not enough substance to be considered an appetizer let alone a meal at $34.00. My husband ordered the Halibut. Overcooked and again a very small portion. We left there having spent $100.00 and still hungery for dinner."

"The only reason why I am not giving five stars for everything for this place is because the server and cooks did not know that farro has gluten in it.I have Celiac Disease, let the wait staff know this, and the server ensured me that the main course I ordered was gluten free and even said he asked the chefs to make sure. However, when I got my meal there was a huge pile of farro- a grain that is definitely not okay for me to eat. Everything else was perfect though. They gave us these delicious olives instead of their usual bread and were otherwise very helpful and accommodating. Their scallop appetizer was one of the best things I've ever tasted and the espresso gelato was awesome. My fiancé was equally impressed!"

"This restaurant is absolutely amazing! For the price and location I wouldn't recommend anywhere else. I would highly recommend staying at the Inn as well! The food in the morning for breakfast was amazing as well!
For starters we had the scallops (potatoes, uni and scallop) and Crispy Pork Belly which were both a wonderful blend of flavors and perfect size portions. For dinner we had the Cocoa Nib Crusted Rack of Lamb and the Miso Glazed California Black Cod, Crispy Black Trumpet Mushrooms. Both were perfectly cooked to order, were a nice portion size and were amazing in flavor! I will be coming back!"

"This was our first visit and we opted for the Prix Fix menu. While some items on the menu would not have been something we would have selected on our own, the presentation and flavors were exceptional! The staff is attentive and professional. When our "medium-rare" meat came out too "rare" they immediately took it back to the kitchen and quickly came back with it done to our liking. The location and buildings (it has lodging too) are lovely, and while the restaurant is a tad formal the food is definitely worth having to dress up a bit more than usual."

"We drove up from San Jose for a day trip in Sonoma, ending the day with dinner at Applewood because of a travelzoo deal. The restaurant was never on my radar because of the distance and we likely won't return as it is so far, but we're glad we went. all of the members of my party enjoyed their food but no one was particularly blown away by any particular dish. maybe our expectations were not set correctly but they do have a Mich Star which kind of confused us. however, their tasting menu price looked very reasonable for what they were serving. our table was in the corner of an enclosed deck, facing the courtyard of the hotel. very lovely. our server was great and the overall service was good tho not super polished."

"This was a wonderful restaurant ... from the time we spoke with a sweet lady by the name of Sandy through the dinner experience. It can't be better than this. The location was ideal, even though we had to drive close to 2 hours to get there, it was worth the trip. Sandy even came to our table to say hi.
The food was superb, basic yet presented so appetizingly. I had the signature dish, lamb chops and my husband had the halibut. We gave each other a taste and both entrees were excellent.
If this restaurant were in our neighborhood, we would go there more often, but since this is somewhat of a 'destination' place, perhaps a couple of times a year would be great to go and enjoy the delicious food and explore the Russian River area"

"I work in the wine industry and have been lucky enough to est at some of the best the Bay Area has to offer including the French Laundry, Meadowood, Chez Panisse and others of that caliber. I would have to say that Applewood Inn is right up there with the best dining in Northern California. If this is what a typical "One Star" Michelin restaurant is, then I need to dine at more of them. It was simply superb. Great food and service. A fairly compact menu and wine list, but very well put together with a range of dishes. The wine list was outstanding. Not too big, but it again had a range of styles and price points made all the more impressive by the emphasis on local wineries."

"Worth the drive. The Applewood Inn was not on my radar until I received the offer from Travel Zoo.
Warm and inviting atmosphere. Professional, pleasant service. Excellent food. A wonderful place to retreat and be treated to some of the best food Sonoma County has to offer.
My husband and I enjoyed a special evening out at the Applewood Inn. It's always a treat to take my husband somewhere that excites or inspires his culinary prowess. The cocoa nib crusted rack of lamb was excellent. A pleasure ~ Thank you"

"An oasis in the River area. Would have given 5 stars for food, but halibut was noticeably over cooked. Fantastic butter lettuce salad; beef cooked to perfection. Will definitely go back. Great Waitstaff."

"The food, with the exception of desserts, is fantastic - great combination of flavors and extremely well-executed. Unfortunately, desserts are good but nowhere near the caliber of the rest of their food and are commonplace in comparison. Even so, for any foodie (or not), it is worth the drive for just the food, because it's that good. Service and decor are befitting for the area."

"The Applewood Inn deserves the Michelin Star that it has receieved. The food was simply Amazing!! Full of wonderful flavors and appealing to the eye and nose as well.
The service was first class and our server Jeremy was superior.
It was an evening that will long be remembered."

"Applewood is a delightful experience from start to finish. The staff are very present and available, but the service is never fussy and you never feel rushed.
The grounds, the restaurant, the building, everything is very comfortable and inviting.
And then there's the food! It's truly one of the top restaurants in the entire area. In fact it's one of the very best restaurants that I have been to anywhere in the San Francisco Bay area the past several years.
The duck confit and the scallops appetizers are to die for.
Beef tenderloin was outstanding, and the lamb was very good. Particularly delightful was honey cannoli, and the profiteroles.
The place is definitely pricey, it was $200 out the door for two people with one bottle of wine. B"

"Wonderful stay and we're quite particular. We chose the room with the covered large balcony nestled among redwoods, very nice. Some highway noise but not really annoying and quiets at night. Room charge includes a wonderful morning breakfast 2 courses served. We ate dinner here first night--the five course sampler with recommended wines for each course (5 + dessert)--exquisite presentation and flavor with each course and well worth the price. Everyone very friendly and helpful. Location good for Russian River Valley wine tasting and sightseeing--including Redwoods and the Pacific coast. We'll be back!"

"We loved everything about the restaurant except the portion size. My husband ordered halibut and literally had two bites of it on his plate. For $36 it seemed pretty ridiculous. I had cod and it was a bigger portion, but still not really enough for a meal. If we had not been on a Living Social Deal that took $50 off we would have been even more disappointed!"
