Chef Brian Clevenger will dazzle guests using creative house-made pastas to create seasonal, Italian-inspired dishes.
Opened in January of 2007, Tavolàta is Chef Ethan Stowell's second restaurant, located at 2323 Second Avenue in Seattle’s Belltown neighborhood. House-made pastas, simple Italian cuisine, and a 30-foot communal table (tavolàta) are the focal point of this urban Italian-inspired eatery. Tavolàta offers a full bar and a wine list featuring Italian and Pacific Northwest wines. Tavolàta serves dinner seven nights a week from 5pm to 11pm. Tavolàta has a semi-private mezzanine for up to 35 guests and a small patio for seasonal dining.
"My sister and I took my mother to Tavolata to celebrate her retirement. I didn't think to request a table on the main floor of the restaurant and we were seated on the 2nd level loft area, directly above the kitchen. It was ridiculously hot and occassional plumes of smoke would billow up from the kitchen. While it was really cool to watch them cooking and preparing the food, due to the 75 degree temperature outside it became sweltering on the second level. Only one of the three windows could open, and was cracked about 5 inches maximum. I would highly suggest they invest in a fan system up there or don't seat people up there when the temperature increases. It had to be 85 degrees or warmer up there. The food was amazing as usual!"

"With all the Ethan Stowell hype I had high expectations and we had a good, but pretty average meal. The fried artichokes were very very average and unremarkable. They were served with a bland a pretty flavorless sauce. My raivoli was good, but not noteworthy. Belltown is a destination for me me, so I wouldn't return and won't recommend the restaurant to anyone."

"Very good meal for a group of 7. Seating that we requested was available when we arrived. Service was very, very good, and other staff were efficient and helpful. Food is always good here, appetizers, pastas and desserts. We have been here numerous times, and have never been disappointed. Someone is doing something very right!"

"Date night after a SIFF film. Nice ambiance at first...but too loud and uncomfortable by the end of the evening. Seats are hard and the food is sub par...dropped $200 for two of us. Ordered the pork belly to share for our appetizer and watched it grow cold when we asked for salt. Memorable wine. We will hunt it down."

"What a great find! My wife and I had dinner there on Saturday evening and discovered a terrific Italian restaurant with hand made pasta -- some of the best pasta I ever had. We sampled the rigatoni (a must have), the potato gnocchi and the pappardelle. All we excellent. The Salumi board and Burrata appetizers were also delicious. Finally, our server, Reva, did a great job of pointing out some of the specialties. She was cheery and professional and added to the great experience. This restaurant is a must do over for us."

"We waited several minutes after being seated before our waiter stopped by to greet us. At one point we had wondered whether the hostess informed the waiter that we were there since it had taken so long. We ended up ordering a $50 bottle of Barolo that the menu indicated was a 2006 vintage. When it arrived (and without showing us the label), the waiter uncorked the bottle and I inquired why the bottle was a 2007 instead of the 2006 we ordered. He said they must have just recently changed the vintages they were carrying in the restaurant. The wine tasted fine and we ended up keeping it (and paying the same price as the 2006), though the whole process was a bit disconcerting and appeared like they were trying to get one over on us."

"This is my favorite place to eat in the city. The food is amazing and the atomsphere is always fun. The only thing that I do not like is, it can get really load and it makes it hard to hear people. I took my parents and they love the food but it was to loud for them. Other then that we had a great time."

"Excellent pastas and some interesting, tasty first plates. Small venue which was intimate, casual and fun. Uncomfortable seating on hard wood booths. Personal, upbeat and informative service. We were seated by 2 very large parties and couldn't hear ourselves talk but good bustling vibe."

"My wife and I have been to Tavolatas several times and the pasta here is really superb. The appetizers seem fine but not as special as at their sister restaurant, Staples and Fancy. The service has been consistently good and very friendly and helpful. The wine list is Italian focused, consistent with the theme of the restaurant. The place has a trendy ambience with a poured concrete look to the walls, etc, which is fine aesthetically but tough on the ears when the Back Street Boys are blasting forth in the background."

"Food was great. Only complaint was that our food was (very) late to be brought to us. The manager came and personally apologized and offered free appetizers and a drink to make right on the delay. The three-star rating for service is uncommon in my experiences here. Still, the response to such delays were a step above and I would have no problem coming back again."

"Went here for restaurant week. Some great hits - who would think pork belly with kumquats would be fantastic. It was. On the down-side though pork belly is pretty unhealthy. The pasta is great here, too. Had a mix-up in which we were promised a booth in 5 minutes that never materialized We had a rez, too, and this mix0up slightly hurt the mood of the evening."

"We dined the last night of restaurant week so I understand they were busy. However, we ordered the gnocchi with crab and a side of the carrots and the broccoli rabe. Our gnocchi and broccoli came out promptly but the kitchen or the server had mis fired potatoes instead of the carrots. The server immediately realized the mistake and told us the carrots would be right out. We finished our gnocchi and broccoli, 25 minutes after our food arrived, still no carrots and we had to leave to return to work. Our server promised that by the time we paid the bill the carrots would be boxed to go and ready for us. Alas, bill paid, no carrots. so we had to leave without them."

"How did I miss this neighborhood gem! I have lived seven blocks away for five years and last weekend was my first visit. We enjoyed our Saturday evening dinner so much we returned for the happy hour on Sunday.
This place is so much fun and the food is fantastic! You must try the crab gnocchi, in may opinion, it is far superior to the best selling gnocchi alla romano. I am a very picky person and I have never in my life had such light, airy, perfect gnocchi, the flavor was superb.
Thank you, Tavolata, I will be back frequently."

"The food was amaizing from start to finish. Its def. cheaper than Metropolotin grill and the food is better. The ambiance is casual, but nice. Not a Olive Garden! Truely authentic Italian food and thats confirmed...you ask how I know this? Well Im not Itallian, but the people next to us were and they barely spoke english, but it was apparent that the food was to thier liking. When the local Italians eat there its authentic. Lots of laughter, smiles and smells. The only Neg thing I can say is that the tables are a little too small for my taste."

"Interesting, high quality appetizers/small plates/primi. Didn't try the secundi. I found the appetizers to be priced a bit high, to be honest. 12-14 dollars for a small taste of one thing or another, although the flavors and presentation were quite good. Nice wine list, emphasizing Italian. Come here ready to spend for a wonderful meal (Ours was over a hundred for a low-end bottle of Italian Montepulciano D'Abruzzo and some small plates. A word about the service -- very friendly and gracious, efficient and tolerant of my companion's tardiness (sat at my table waiting by myself for nearly an hour and the servers kept repeating "no problem," which I appreciated.)"

"Went there for restaurant week. Had the smoked Spanish mackerel that was PHENOMENAL! The flavor of the fish came through with just a tinge of smokiness to give it some zing; its texture was perfectly cooked - melted in your mouth without being mushy or rubbery. Since there were 3 of us we ordered one of each dessert - all terrific. I especially liked the chocolate terrine which had nougat and hazelnut. Didn't care much for the stark concrete grey walls and long tables. The wait staff kept knocking my purse to the ground as they sped by. A terrific gastronomic experience but the decor and table set up could be much improved. Would return - but not bring a purse!"

"The food was lovely but they played the worst and most intrusive music I have ever heard in a dining environment which made conversation almost impossible and completely ruined the ambiance for me. They were not responsive to my requests to turn it down. I will not return for that reason. Music if played at all should provide BACKGROUND and not overpowering. It made me feel like I was in a cheap bar despite the lovely surroundings and fine cuisine."

"I usually find it hard to order steak at a restaurant. When I order a steak medium rare, it usually comes out medium and I'm just upset the steak was ruined. If it is actually cooked right, then it's usually tiny and not worth the money paid. The Tavolata New York Strip came out perfectly medium rare and was an actual full steak. I highly recommend it.
On the other hand, the short ribs came simply drowned in balsamic. I was expecting some sort of balsamic reduction; something with a little refined taste to it. Instead, they simply upended a bottle of salad dressing onto the short ribs and polenta. Waste of a meal."

"Very poor service. The server had no idea about the food. We asked that she explain to us how the food is cooked and the only answer we got was that "it's good". We asked to be seated st a booth and we were refused even though we had reservations. An older couple walked in after we did and was seated at one of the booths without a reservation. We will never go back there. Lots of noise, uncomfortable seats....definitely, not the place to have a quiet, peaceful dinner. Food was OK but definitely overpriced. We asked for sparkling white wine and was given flat."

"We went for the $75/person Valentine's day dinner and ended up spending $300 w/ a bottle of wine and tip. The cost didn't bother us, as dinner was a delight. I had the lobster risotto, and my boyfriend had the steak, which he did think would be a better cut, considering the overall cost. I was happy with my dish, though!
I would give it 4 starts, overall. The wine was incredible, the candle lit loft beautiful, and I didn't feel overdressed in my fur coat.
I hear the happy hour is phenomenal, so I will be going back!"

"This was my first time to the restaurant, it won't be the last. I took my wife there for our Valentines celebration because of her love for gnocchi. The atmosphere had a warm depth to it upon sitting down making it feel like we had our own little room. We warmed up with the Macrina baguette and our drinks which were both good. Personally I prefer warm bread, which it was not, but it was still enjoyable. She had the semolina gnocchi and I had the potato gnocchi. We were both in love with our food and each other. At the end of the meal, they sent us home with a couple bags of fresh pasta which was a nice touch. Thanks for helping us have a great night."

"Enjoyed a wonderful dinner on Valentine's Day. The special menu was interesting and let us enjoy a variety of tastes and textures. Loved the presentation of each course. Read the raves about the hand crafted gnocchi and was not disappointed. Our server was attentive but didn't hover which was great since our meal lasted for over two hours. Will definitely return for dinner again - hopefully sometime soon."

"Not our first time visiting Tavolata and not our last, but not our best visit. We decided to go out for Vday day and chose Tavolata because of the great time we had before. I had spaced checking if there was a special menu for vday, so I was pleasantly surprised with their paired down menu, which was excellent. We were sat in the upper back space at a long table, which initially rubbed us wrong because we were hoping for some privacy, you know it being vday and all. We got over this after a few glasses of wine, but if they had sat anyone directly next to us, it would have soured the rest of dinner. Our server seemed a bit distracted and busy but was otherwise on point and friendly. Overall, good food and a good time, will be back again."

"Overall a fine restaurant, stripped down, simplified italian. Service was good, back service was good too. The restaurant had a rockin' vibe to it. Upstairs would be my preference if dining there again. Although I'll likely try other pasta places first as our pasta was under-cooked (two steps beyond al dente) and the ravioli while good, was the same you'd expect most anywhere if you frequent restaurants throughout the nation. Brownbutter, sage, cheese, and X ingredient. Kudos in this case as X = chestnuts, but because of the butter, the chestnuts were difficult to discern on the palate. The idea is at least a welcome departure from butternut squash. Btw,Bread = chewy
Attractive room, good lighting, pleasant service staff (including host)"
