A collaborative effort of Chef David Bouley and Japan’s Tsuji Culinary Institute, Brushstroke presents an inspired modern adaptation of Kyoto's kaiseki cuisine: seasonally focused tasting menus that change throughout the year.
Kaiseki menus in the main dining room showcase a wide range of Japanese cuisine, from delicate use of vegetables to sashimi, rice and wagyu. Options include the chef’s artisanal kaiseki menu ($135), the shorter tasting menu ($85) and the fully vegetarian tasting menu ($85).
Sushi is offered exclusively in a separate area, where Chef Eiji Ichimura presents omakase ($150+) sushi dining. Reservations for sushi are not available online.
"Let's talk about the food, I had ordered the Tasting Menu. Compare what my pervious Kaisei experience in other japanese restaurant in NYC & Japan. The presentation isn't reach to that level yet, it has rooms to improve. For the sashimi we upgraded to Chef's special it definitely needed, as the regular one it only come with 6 slides, with stand fish. One thing is their ingredient is fresh. Among all the dishes, I was only impressed by the dessert, it was a interesting dish, Shoyu Icecream & Mirin Icecream. I feel sad that is the only dish i can remember. For the money i had spend on my dinner, I dont feel satisfied. If you have been to Kyoto or Japan for Kaiseiki, you will understand, and it just cant compare to it."

"Sashimi is excellent, as are the soups and salads. However, they missed with the tempura soft-shelled crab: uni sauce made it mushy, and crab had a strange metallic taste to it. Also, the rice lobster dish was way overcooked."

"ate at both- ichimura is amazing and second to none- go there.
Brushstroke itself- overpriced and subpar food- will not return. also insulting when the "supplement" to a tasting menu after all is said and done is effectively 100% of the tasting menu price- just add it all up and raise the tasting menu price- it just creates an unpleasant dining experience when there are only 2 dishes on the "regular" tasting menu
go to Ichimura- a unique gem"

"Food is not percfect, just degustation menu. From 6 dishes, we did not 4 of them. Not a good rice, not a good beef, some good sushis... I mean. At the end, 400 dollars with a 120 dollars sake botlle. Day before we have spent same 400 dollars at Bouley (just in front and same owner) and was perfect."

"I was expecting Japanese, but it was more an Americanized version of Japanese. Maybe it didn't have the zen one might have been expecting, but in the end this is all good. It's better to try to stand out, be unique, etc. than try to copy something else. I had the kaiseki with wine/sake pairings. Comparing it to the kaiseki I had in Kyoto, I think it missed the mark in being appealing to all five senses. That being said, it did hit the mark in the most important sense -- TASTE! But it varied. It ranged from awesome to mediocre, but the good far outweighed the mediocre. Or in other words, mediocre was the exception rather than the rule.
Bottom line, I'd recommend it."

"Unfortunately my experience was very ordinary to say the least. It started with being sat at the closest seat to the entrance at the sushi bar and finding that my view into the open kitchen consisted of a a huge stone pillar that completely obscured my view.
Is this how you usually treat single diners in New York who have booked a month in advance? Is this really giving the full dining experience given that the whole idea of an open kitchen is to have an insight into the theatrics of service?
Service was hospitality 101 at best, and it certainly appeared like someone was in a hurray for me to leave. The food was bland.
Food was equally disappointing, most dishes lacked flavour and were boarding on bland. Not a great experience at all."

"We had a very enjoyable dinner. The tasting menu and the Spring special are both excellent. The food is delicious, the taste is extraodinay. the prsentation is exactly what a kaseiki is all about. Cold sake is to die for. We will be back."

"I picked the restaurant to go with a colleague for a food-night-out who had a preference for Japanese, and he came out grinning from ear to ear after our kaiseki dinner (not to mention my own smiles). The staff were commendable - professional yet intimate and friendly. The menu is well thought of in my opinion.
He's going back again - and so will I."

"Amazing service and beautiful atmosphere. Not sure if we were expecting too much but the tasting menu did not have a lot of memorable dishes. The food was good, but out of 6 or 7 courses only 1 was really memorable so that value wasn't great after going in expecting to be blown away by dish after dish."

"I was hoping for a special experience, as i've come to expect from Bouley's restaurant. Unfortionately, Brushstroke fell short of the mark. The experience wasn't bad - just not particuarly special. Certainly not worth the price."

"The service was excellent (almost too good- barely started to eat course when they came by asking if they could take dish). But portions are very small. I get its a tasting menu, but for the price I think not worth it. There are far better sushi spots in NYC"

"It was our first time there since it change from Danube. My wife and I were there to celebrate our anniversary. The wait staff was very professional and was very attentive to our ever need. We were even offered items that were not even on the menu. I guess it was our lucky day. Overall the food was delightful and creatively done. Well worth a return visit if time and money permits."

"The food is absolutely delicious here. I brought a potential client here for a business dinner. We tried their 8 course tasting menu which was very tasty, fresh and unique. The waitstaff was very attentive. I would definitely come here again. This is a great place for a business meeting as it is not too loud either. If you love sake, they've got a wonderful selection. And if you drive, parking around this neighborhood was easy."

"We have found the (regular) brushstroke menu to be wonderful-- so good that we rarely deviate from it. But we opted for the Spring menu and it exceeded our already high expectations. Every course we delicious and a pleasure to all the senses. This is one of our favorite places for celebrating anniversaries, and we will return for our next anniversary!"

"Can't go wrong. Everything is good. You pay the price, but then you don't have to worry about anything. This is what quality means. I recommend it. On top of it, no horrendous TV anywhere, music super quiet, which makes people behave quieter and talk quieter too. Great.
I strongly recommend it."

"Went to Brushstroke for my girlfriends birthday. Had the 8 course tasting menu which was $85 per person. I figured I'd splurge and see how the other side lived. Got a 300ml bottle of Sake also. The food was very creative and the service was impeccable. The total bill came to $220. Overall it was a wonderful atmosphere, good food and great service. Not somewhere I would go often, but maybe once a year for special occasions."

"It was great, the service was good, a little too up tight but I like that sort of dining experience sometimes. I found it to be overrated though, I ordered a dish in the end that came with rice. The rice tasted like plastic, no kidding! But their sushi was good."

"Enjoyable vegetarian tasting menu, but occasionally shaky service and a "too warm" room detracted from the experience. Even though I'd indicated I would have veg. kaiseki on my rez, I was still presented with menu of meat/seafood options & didn't appreciate position I was put in/way I felt by not ordering larger menu with $upplements. I would've ordered more beverages during dinner were I asked, but I'm guessing they wanted to flip my seat ASAP for someone who'd splurge on the longer format (i.e. more $) menu. Even if this wasn't the case, the fact that I feel this way probably doesn't speak very highly of my experience. I can't imagine being in any hurry to return, in a city (and neighborhood) full of world class options."

"We tried the $85 (smaller) tasting menu which was excellent and a good value. Sashimi, fish, meat and rice like no place else on earth. Creative and inventive doesn't begin to describe the flavors and textures. It isn't really food; its whatever comes after food in the evolution of the planet. Elegant room and service. Must try at least once if you are lucky enough to get a reservation."

"Very good innovative Japanese food. Serene surroundings with uncomfortable seating. Service is the problem. It needs a lot of work. It should be superb in such a high level restaurant but it's lacking in many respects. The servers are confused, wait for some dishes feels extended, one server even squeezed through a tiny space between table and wall behind a dining couple!, to pass through in a hurry, some servers speak with such a heavy accent tha I had no idea what they were saying. I will stick with Bouleys amazing restaurant across the street. I will not be coming back here as the service was simply not on par wi the high level of this restaurant."

"After we were seated, no waiter appeared for at least ten minutes. Never were we asked if we wanted to order a drink. We ordered some sparkling water. The server poured the entire bottle into three of the four glasses so he had to open yet another bottle. No sommelier ever appeared to discuss sake or wine. We ordered the food which was interesting and good although a tasting menu is always overload and we ordered the smaller of the tasting menus offered. When the food was brought out, it was served in a unison with great fanfare. This theatrical service seemed silly in light of the fact that we had never seen a maitre'd or a sommelier or had been offered drinks initially. Service was amateurish and made of a long, dismal"

"This was the second time I have dined at Brushstroke, and we had the Kaiseki menu. Every course was delicious and lovely. The stand outs were the chef's sashimi selections, the lobster with uni sauce, and the waygu steak. It was a terrific dining experience, and the service was excellent."

"Went to dinner on 2/23 for my boyfriends birthday. Everything at brushstroke was like clockwork and they really did everything in their power to show us a special time. We are frequent patrons of the city's nice establishments and have been lucky to experience recent meals at Le bernardin, Marea, eleven Madison, the nomad, and others of their ilk. Brushstroke definitely ranks up there in term of service, presentation and stands out in terms of creativity. Major props for the mirin and soy sauce ice cream duo for dessert. That, along with some of the other dishes including (excuse my spelling) the chawan mushi, the donubi rice bowls, and others made this a dinner to remember. Cannot wait for our sushi dinner at ichimura next month"

"One of the best meals that we have had from the food to the service. Neither my wife nor I had ever had Kaiseki cuisine, and we found it to be a wonderful blend of flavors that often started in one delightful fashion, ending in a terrific surprise. The textures and presentation were wonderful. The quality of the food was matched by the outstanding service. The waitstaff were unobstrusive, present exactly when they were needed, knowledgeable and absolutely friendly. A gem."

"The food was creative and the tasting menu at $85/person was reasonably priced given the quality of the sushi. The service was very good up until the end when for some unknown reason our waiter disappeared. We ultimately had to ask another waiter for our check and some extra food that was to be packed for us never arrived. A strange and unpleasant end to an otherwise excellent meal."
