Inakaya
Our original restaurant in Japan was established and opened its first door in the heart of Roppongi, Tokyo in 1970, as the traditional "Robata-yaki" restaurant. Since then, Inakaya has been loved by substantial numbers of distinguished personalities, comprising of former President of the United States, Hollywood stars, and other celebrities and the epicureans from around the world for more than 30 years. "Robata" is the Japanese term that stands for "around a sunken hearth" and "yaki" means "grilling". Families used to gather around the hearth for dinner, which evolved into "Robata-yaki" style. It is known as a type of traditional cuisine, which features fresh ingredients grilled in proximity of guests' own eyes. Foods are cooked on open-flame, its ancient but healthy grilling method of dropping excess oil has attained its popularity, and has spread throughout Japan. And now it comes to New York!

"Their standard sushi/sashimi bento box is solid. The salmon and other fish was incredibly fresh. I would definitely return. It was a bit noisy for a business lunch acceptable. The ambiance is similar to restaurants I have been to in Tokyo and Osaka, very authentic."

"The food was incredible. I had the yellowtail and my boyfriend had the beef skewers, and we shared orders of asparagus and mushrooms. There wasn't a single piece of food that wasn't cooked to perfection. The staff was wonderful as well. This may be our new favorite place"

"dining at inakaya usually takes me back to the edo-period. to me it means the virtues of the senses were cherished to the utmost. the atmosphere there does that to me. and the food is near to perfect in my humble opinion. too bad that a shabby service ruins such an experience dramatically. usually, the service is fine even though not great as usually japanese culture would suggest. however, yesterday, the service was an offense. if it was not for my guests from germany, i would have left and gone elsewhere to dine. sorry to say."

"it is an original way to serve people, all the staff behind the bar in japanese costumes, nice presentaiton ... though food wasvery expensive (2 very small brochettes of Kobe beef for 30$ come on ...) had to take other stuff cause i was hungry ... kids took lobster, nice to present them on the ice in front of u, though the taste had nothing special ... just grilled ...

"I really enjoyed this robata! It's authentic without appearing gimmicky. The food tastes wonderful and while its probably a little "Americanized" the large number of Japanese patrons suggests its a taste of home. Sit at the counter and enjoy having your food presented to you by the chef. If you've no idea what to order simply choose the tasting menu for 5 courses of new and delicious food. I'd happily return."

"Food was good, not great. First time dining at a Japanese barbeque. I would have wanted the waitress to do a better job explaining the menu. The most annoying part was everytime someone walked in, everyone had to yell, WELCOME in Japanese. Very, very, very disturbing and should be stopped right away."

"The food was quite good esp the grilled fish we ordered, and the sushi was quite good and fresh.
We ordered the 5 course tasting menu, with robata veggie and a chicken skewer, and sushi as main course, I would say only the 2nd course with grilled eggplant and one type of mushroom was good and moist, i didn't find the others too tasty and most of them were quite dry.
A side note is that after we got home, we have been feeling quite thirsty the whole night! Not sure how much MSG we've taken in this restaurant!? For the price of this restaurant, i think the food quality is not bad, but definetly has a lot of room to improve!"

"It was an interesting Sushi place. I was unable to initially enjoy the food because of the raw fish they were serving that did not look palatable. However, the waiter offered me another alternative which was far better than what my certificate offered. Then I enjoyed my meal! The place is clean, great concept, not your regular Japanese restaurant. My husband on the other hand enjoyed everything that was served him and is planning to go back there."

"If you come to Inakaya, be sure to sit at the Robata-yaki counter. It's a different and enjoyable experience to be served your meal on the wooden paddles of the preparers. As you enter the restaurant, you are greeted with the shouts of "irimashai-mase" just as you would be in Tokyo. The restaurant itself is lovely and vibrant. The staff is friendly and helpful. It's a unique and pleasant way to dine."

"This is a different dining experience and one we shall repeat. The food was heavenly - who knew that grilled veggies could taste SO good. The staff were welcoming, and explained how to order. "It's a tough neighborhood for good food and this place was okay. Food was very good, but the show, clapping, birthday songs are in contrast with the otherwise beautiful room. They were very slow in seating us even though we had a reservation (we waited about 20 minutes by the cold door). Can't say we'd go back but it was okay for what it was."

"Came here on with the 7 course Bloomspot Special for 2 (which is also available on their regular menu for $50 each). The ambiance is very nice, authentic Japanese. I had a chance to look at the menu online before the meal and I told our waiter that I wanted to opt out of the egg dishes. They still brought them anyways, the food was alright my favorite was the Yakimono or grilled course. The sushi was pretty delicious as well, it come as part of the rice or Meshimono dish. Judging by the live lobsters, you can tell the seafood is fresh."

"Was pleasantly surprised how authentic they were. Huge casks of house sake on each end of the sushi bar was interesting. Very good sake selection. Plenty of Japanese patrons which is always a good sign. Whole fish on ice waiting to be prepared. One customer ordered a whole big eye snapper which was roasted on a long skewer. All in all a very nice dinner. Will go again!"

"Rarely do I not find some positive with almost any expreriece. So at Inakaya I can honestly say I loved the Spicy Shrimp Sushi. That was about it. The staff was "cold" and really did not engage us at all. The food was marginal at best. Disappointed."

"I bought a Robata deal through bloomspot, and I can't wait to try it. It was a very fun environment, my friend and I sat at the bar, the chef pass the food to us by using a long tray. When we take pic, they pose for us. It was my friend birthday, and the whole restaurant had a small ceremony for her, what a pleasant surprise. The service was excellent and the manager kept checking on us, make sure everything is well. Love this restaurant and will definitely come back!The grill is outstanding, simple and tasty. The sushi is normal standard. I'm coming back to kaiseki next time."

"The prix-fixe menu was excellent- fresh and very tasty. I had the Kobe beef skewers, which were outstanding. GF had sushi, which was also very good. The service is slow."

"Tried their tasting menu. It was very little and quite boring food. But what was worse, was that they gave us the next course before we had finished the last one. We finished of 5 courses in approximately 45 minutes and then we really tried to eat slowly."

"The restaurant was different and very enjoyable. The service was different. When your entree was ready the cooks put it on a plank and passed it to you..All were friendly except the lady who seated us. Her snappy and unprofessional answers to a simple question upset me but I calmed down and spoke to the the manager about her. He was very polite and his explanation for his workers behavior was typical but it did not spoil my dinner. ..I plan to return someday. I really enjoyed myself."

"The glass wall on one side makes the restaurant look much bigger than it is. The 3 of us sat at the Sushi bar (my 9 year old loves watching her meal being prepared). The waiters & staff were absolutely helpful with the questions my child had. In the middle of our meal the staff broke out & thanked the diners, I missed that (thought it was only done in Tokyo). The was also a Mochi making demo which though was a wee bit touristy, made our child smile. All in all a good place for not just the Sushi but also a traditional Japanese meal. Yes, the sake list is also extensive."

"Went with my boyfriend to try out their winter restaurant week menu.The place is nice with very high ceiling.We sat by the bar,which was special because the sushi chefs will deliver the food to you by their giant spatula from inside the bar once they finished cooking.It was kind of interesting and special.They also had a 5 minute "rice/mochi pounding ceremony" where guests can go up and try to pound the rice. The mochi will be given to all customers for free in two flavors:soy & greentea.They were sooooo good :) the appetitizers(seared tuna salad and grilled oyster) were beyond my expectation. however the entrees (kobe beef and grilled salmon w/king crab) were little diasppointed.Overall I think it is pretty good but prob wont go again."

"Food is outstanding and the small plates approach wonderful. I prefer not to be entertained, however, when i am eating, esp when it is this expensive. It's like being at a suburban mall restaurant where everyone has a birthday every 10 minutes, and on top of it the maitre d walks around literally SCREAMING "welcome" constantly, regardless of how close he comes to your ears as you dine. Fairly ridiculous but disguised as "our culture" when you ask about it. New York culture is loud and in your face. That's why i like to get away from it by going INSIDE. Would NOT go back despite wonderful food."

"I had a good experience dining at Inakaya. The food was fresh & served appropriately. The atmosphere of the restaurant was pleasant. My friend & I enjoyed the dining there.
