"My wife and I splurged a little bit on this restaurant, as it was a little pricey, but not outrageous. For a spot to take someone for a nice meal, it certainly delivered. The hotel it is housed in is actually a little dated; it isn't new and hip, but don't let that stop you! The live music being playing just a few feet away really helps make dinner an event, and the patio has a nice view. Ambiance aside, the food was worth every penny. It had nice presentation without being so chic that you don't know how to eat it, and the Ono & Mahi Mahi we had were fresh and done to perfection. If you weren't looking for seafood, they also have a nice selection of other dishes."

"We are regulars at Hukilau Lanai and have our menu favorites. But we tried three new things this visit that were all heavenly. The sashimi stack was a yummy alternative to our usual Adam's Poke Nachos, the Fisherman's Miso was to die for, and we topped it off our meal with a fabulous chocolate mousse with a chocolate crumb crust and crumbled toffee on top. You really can't go wrong at Hukilau."

"We had to wait for our table for about 20 minutes.We were asked if we wanted to wait longer for a more prime table, and we said we would wait.We were seated at the back of the restaurant next to the fire extinguisher and the glass doors leading to a Kapaa Rotary rock and roll party.Out of one ear you could faintly hear the live Hawaiian music that was offered in the restaurant, but blasting in our other ear was wedding type dance music like"Superstition".That said,our waitress Sandra was very good,and the food was good too. The manager offered to move us, but our meal was almost done,so she gave us an extra dessert. It was our first time here-not sure we will be back.Ask for a table near the live music."

"This restaurant was 'okay'. They seated us away from the main seating area, which I thought was weird considering I made the reservations months in advance plus the place wasn't crowd/full. Got the set fixed menu. But only found some of the sections tasty."

"Last dinner on the island and we apparently saved best for last. We ordered Opah and swordfish and my wife and I actually passed the meals back and forth because both were so good. Our server took time to explain everything to us and even pointed out that meals come with soup or salad (did not say this on menu). They had a great wine selection of 20 some wines for 20 some dollars. What a great deal in a restaurant. Since they probably mark them up 100% I bet my $22 bottle of Wrongo Dongo is about $10 or so in the store (which is what I buy anyways) and it was very tasty! If you are on Open Table then you are already booking reservation which is key as it seemed pretty full (Friday night just before peak family vacation season)."

"Overall, this is a good value for dining out in Kauai. The prices are relatively low for high dining and the portions are generous. The service is nice and the dining room has a pleasant ambience (though not as nice some other resort restaurants such as Red Salt or the Beach House). But the menu and cooking just feels dated - about 10-15 years dated. The fried items are just a little too heavy and oily, the fish just a touch overcooked, and the saucing lacks finesse."

"We had a wonderful dinner at the Hukilau. I love how all the entrees incorporate healthy vegetables. I loved the Opah and my daughter loved her Ahi.
I do have to say that "Ocean view dining" that is in their advertising is deceiving. I thought that the restaurant was on the beach. What it is, are tables outside and you can see the ocean from afar.
The waiters are very polite - would have loved more personal service. Our waitress never introduced herself and we overheard another waiter approach a new table without introducing himself either. That personal touch can go a long way."

"We always eat at Hukilau our first and last nights in Kauai (we grill the other nights). The food this time did not disappoint, it was very good. We had never had the poke nachos before - excellent! Also the barbequed ribs - really tasty! The fish is always good, we have been disappointed in the meat, so stick to fish now. Sides are creative and good. This time we managed to have a dessert, the Creme Brulee, which was great texture and taste. Service both times was excellent."

"The food as always was delicious. Our waiter was great to the Caucasian guests at our table, but it was pretty obvious he's not used to nor does he enjoy serving people of color. He was a poor reflection of the friendliness of all the other staff; I guess it was just our luck of the draw to have someone narrow-minded like him."

"My Husband's birthday dinner was fantastic! He loved the meatloaf-and it was an ample portion! The wally's salad that came with dinner was good. I ordered the veggie lasagna and it was delicious and a very generous portion which I really appreciated! We shared a chocolate mousse that was creamy and light! The lava flows were the best we had on the island! We will definitely dine there again!"

"I wanted a good restaurant for my anniversary dinner, the concierge recommended the Hukilau, I was not disappointed. From the appetizers to the desert... the food was amazing. "Whenever we visit Kauai we make a point to have a special dinner out and always choose Hukilau Lani. Be sure to make reservations and ask for a seat on the outdoor patio for the best views, ambience and lower noise levels. On this particular night there was a wedding reception being held on the grass area and then in the back banquet room. It was quite loud and took away from our usual relaxing dinner but the food was excellent! You will not find better prepared fish on the island!!!"

"Tonight's visit was off the chart ! As repeat visitors, we always look forward to what new ideas Krissi, Manda & crew have come up with. Joseph, our waiter for the evening, presented us the answers after bringing us the islands BEST MAI TAI's. We started with the standard cheese focaccia bread and balsamic dip-then moved right in to Candied Ahi (2 orders, please! )--followed by lobster bisque and a Wally salad. The crowning entrees of the night were: 1) Seared Ahi ,dressed with pesto,presented on a bed of goat cheese laced polenta and 2) Mahi Mahi, dressed with a dollop of salsa, laying on a bed of fettuccini noodles laced with spinach, corn, red onion and homemade sausage bits and accented with a chipotle drizzle. After this, LIGHTS OUT"

"We went to Hakilau Lanai for an anniversary dinner and sat outside on the patio. Patio overlooks grounds, pool and farther distance, the ocean. The restaurant is located in the Kauai Coast resort.
Food, service and atmosphere were excellent. Good menu with good selection of entree's. Surprising good wine selection. Probably one of the best restaurants on the island. Tried Westin Nanea, Gaylord's and St. Regis on this trip, but will definitely come back to Hakilau Lanai on next trip."
Food, service and atmosphere were excellent. Good menu with good selection of entree's. Surprising good wine selection. Probably one of the best restaurants on the island. Tried Westin Nanea, Gaylord's and St. Regis on this trip, but will definitely come back to Hakilau Lanai on next trip."

"Our meal was delicious. I had the opah and my husband had the Mahi. The fish was sooooo fresh and the preparation was wonderful. It came with a salad. It was also very fresh and lightly dressed just the way we like it. We will be going back at least once, maybe twice before returning to the mainland. Can't wait!"

"My wife made reservations for my 60th Birthday dinner and it was one I will always remember. We enjoyed the 5 course tasting selection for dinner. The food was outstanding! Our waiter was very attentive and we were not rushed at all. It was a very enjoyable evening and will always be remembered. Will return on our next visit for sure!"

"Didn't expect much as we drew up in the car but wanted to try this place as we had read many good reviews. Despite our expectations, the food was wonderful. "We've been goiing to Kauai for 30 years and have yet to find a restaurant that is as good, in so many ways, as Hukilau Lanai. From the food, (each serving better than the last), to the service, (Tim), to the view, H. L. is unsurpassed. We will return often. The value is remarkable-we had an entree and the food-only wine/food pairing and spent less than we have at any comparable eatery on the island. We were celebrating our wedding anniiversary and could not have been more pleasantly surprised. We stay in the Princeville area when we're on the island. The H.L. is much closer to Princeville than the Beach House, for example, and the fare is equal to the Beach House, if not better. The wine list needs better descriptions or pre-dinner tastes"

"We are foodies and this place is wonderful. We each had the Happy Hour Tasting menu. That title short changes what it really is - a full 5 course meal, paired with wines from around the world. The wine pairings were spot on. Each of the courses offered something special. Service was right on and with a smile, and each course was timed perfectly...not too soon. "Based on many online reviews, we had high expectations for this restaurant. It was very hard to get a reservation. Pretty setting. Food was OK. Too much sauce with the fish dishes and the sauces were not that good. Plates were too busy. My mixed grill had a skewer of shrimp which detracted from the other 2 local fishes. Fish was good but we had much better on the island. Restaurant was too precious and full of itself. The wine is list cheap and eclectic but that does not make it a good wine list. The wines included many oddball varietals but were not wines to complement the food."

"We were on our 2nd trip to Kauai, but our 1st time at Hukilau. It was a great experience because of the wonderful food, wine (Nani Moon) & service. Make sure you have reservations in advance as there was a very long wait for those without one. Definitely will come again on future vacations."
