"AGR is opened for Sunday brunch on a few special holidays. My wife and I have been to all of these openings this year and are thrilled to be able to enjoy Chef's Joe Clarke's unique blend of flavors. Every offering at AGR surpasses our expectations ,whether it is a brunch or evening menu. This restaurant provides a thoroughly divine dining experience on any occasion. "The food was average...I gave it a "fair" because for the price and what they taut as "gourment" food it should have been outstanding. I ordered the ribeye...my food--the vegetables, the potatoes and meet all came out at room temperature...as if it was waiting for the other food to catch up. Unacceptable."

"I took my wife there for a recent birthday celebration. It is a small place so you have a nice feel to it. Service was good and the wine list is excellent. However, the menu varies and that night it had mostly items that my wife did not really wish to pick from. Nonetheless, would repeat, but not my top selection for places to eat in that immediate area."

"If you are a foodie, hie thee to American Grocery. This place is awesome, from its top shelf creative cocktails (they infuse their own liquors) to its carefully curated wine and beer list, to its lovingly and meticulously crafted plates. I am a picky diner from Atlanta, eating far and wide, always in search of the finest foods and most innovative and delicious combinations, and this is one of the top places I have dined this year. Who knew Greenville, SC, had such a gem? I would make the 2.5 hour drive again in an instant just to eat here.

"My wife and I have been frequent visitors to AGR since it opened. AGR is always worth a visit. Over the years , we have submitted our comments and frankly , our dining experience is always the same: SIMPLY SUPERB . Our last visit was for the Mother's day brunch. "We went to Greenville based on a national article that described it as the new culinary destination in the Southeast. After eating at various recommended restaurants, it was so nice to eat at a restaurant that was owned by a Chef and not part of a multi-unit Corporate chain.
The space is warm and intimate. Drinks and wine list are excellent. Our server,Justin was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. I found the app section to be so interesting,I only had apps. My charcuterie plate was obviously made in house, my sweetbreads were fire grilled which gave them a very interesting flavor,yet still moist. Our favorite dish was a deep fried hard boiled egg. OMG...
My wife had the soft shell crabs over grits and they were also wonderful.

"Our past three visits were OUTSTANDING.Not to the fault of AGR, the place was Extremely busy with the pre-PEACE Center crowd, this fourth visit was disappointing. The noise was so deafening that we did not hear a word of conversation.The front window table is a NO for us. The kitchen seemed overwhelmed as the food service was slow.Sea scallops overcooked.More wine offered by the server to take up the time. Kindly asked the owner to find our entrees. She was great. The dessert tart shell shortbread pastry was soggy. The tart was a show-stopper just the week before! I'll check the theatre schedule and choose another night.

"We had a LONG dinner at AGR. Seated 20 minutes after 8:30 researvation, finally got meal around 9:45/10pm. Food was good, but many things were out...I'd definitely go back with my husband on a date, but not with a group larger than 2."

"I had been wanting to try this restaurant for quite a while and am extremely glad I did.We tried their tasting plate menu which was interesting to say the least. Ox tongue?? OK, I'm willing to try.The food came in smaller servings- four courses The salad was OK, It was tasty. Next course of scallops on basil risotto was absolutely amazing. Grilled over hickory, they were extremely tasty.Next came the biggest surprise of the night- ox tongue which was beautifully presented but the taste sensation...thats what threw both of us. This was an absolutely spectacular tasting sensation created by a chef who very obviously knows what he is doing..Desert of fruit was tasty

"Had a wonderful dinner at American Grocery on Saturday night. Our waiter was excellent and answered numerous questions regarding the specialty cocktails and menu items.
Definitely try the Sweet Potato biscuits - the bacon adds a really unique taste! Also loved the halibut and my husband thought the steak was one of the best he's had in Greenville! I tried the Smoking Barrel cocktail and it was definitely intersting!"

"We had not eaten here since right after they opened. The food is very good and nicely presented. Definitely one of the better spots for very well prepared food. My gripe is that they are adamantly opposed to making any changes, such as substituting one vegetable for another. I find this frustrating since it seems trivial and while I may really want to try a certain dish, the side may be a non-starter for me. As with most of the partrons in a restaurant like this, I know my food and know what I like and do not like; and do not need a chef -- no matter how good -- playing mother and insisting I stick with their conception."

"American Grocery Restaurant, or AGR for those in the know, is a great place to find something a little different, superbly prepared with local ingredients. It is a bit pricier than some other places (but not so much so that you can't go for a special night out every now and again), especially as portions are sized just right to allow you to have an appetizer, main, AND dessert - all of which you will definitely want to have. We sat at a quiet table by a window overlooking the street, which is summer would be a great way to peoplewatch as you eat. They have some unique and extremely tasty cocktails, an ecclectic selection of beers, and a great wine selection (even the "by the glass" selection is outstanding). Try the wine pairings, too!"

"A memorable dining experience! Delicious,local and organic food in a beautiful restaurant with a knowledgeable server, unique wine list and proprietors who loves serving people and making them happy, costs more than eating at a chain steak or seafood restaurant. The prices were in keeping with this genre of fine dining establishment. Will return next trip to Greenville. When you go, leave room for a delicious dessert and after dinner drink!"

"Growing up in Greenville in the late 60's-70's there were few if any decent restaurants to choose from and the part of town where American Grocery is located was no-man's land. Today Greenville has an incredible selection of great dining establishments including American Grocery. Dinner was interesting "in a good way" if you are open to a different take on dishes. The Pork Belly appetizer was outstanding. Fried devil egg was fun. Wild King Salmon was cooked to perfection. Darlene who runs the restaurant with her husband John hit upon something special in a truly vibrant and exciting new part of town. Very nice wine selection but that night I stuck with the Palm beer."

"We had a fantastic time at AGR. We chose to go with the 4 course prix fixe and chose to include the wine pairings. The wine pairing were perfectly matched and enhanced the meal exceptionally. Our server was very knowledgeable and friendly. Even when I realized that we weren't going to have enough time to make it to the show, he jumped on it and quickly got the desserts out so that we didn't miss it. Definitely top notch service (I don't remember his name but he had a great mustache).
I had never had beef tongue before so I didn't know what to expect, but I definitely did NOT expect something as wonderful as that! If you choose an entrée I would definitely recommend it."

"Well worth the time to try. Waitstaff is very well trained and can answer questions about wines that very few can. Food was outstanding as well as creative. The beef tongue was a surprise favorite dish of the evening. Wow."

"Great service and even better food. The waiter was very knowledgable and helpful. I had him explain several items on the menu and he really helped me make informed decisions. I had the braised beef tongue and my wife had trout and both dishes were outstanding. For a nice casual atmosphere and delicious dinners I would recommend the American Grocery Restaurant to everyone. AGR is not your average restaurant, they are really a cut above."

"While I felt that the food was good, the attitude of the staff was very icy and unfriendly. To spend that amount on a dinner out, I expect a warm reception and didn't feel that's what we received. They were also out of at least two signature menu items, which was very disappointing."

"The food at American Grocery is of high quality and imaginatively designed, prepared and presented. Locally available products are emphasized and result in interesting and enjoyable regional meals. Service is professional, courteous and responsive. The restaurant itself is a pleasant, attractive place with tables comfortably spaced. We consider American Grocery one of the most distinctive restaurants we have ever been to and we do a fair amount of traveling into different parts of the country. On our trip south to Georgia this year, we made a considerable detour on the way back home north to visit Greenville just to have dinner at American Grocery."

"We visited AGR for the first time on Valentine's Day when we enjoyed the V-Day 4-course "special event" dinner. Free parking along the street just 1 block away was no problem, but there were also few $5 pay parking lots. The restaurant is decorated beautifully with craftsman-style appointments. The lighting includes a few harsh "spotlights" but those are high in the ceiling and not obtrusive. The service was cheerful and our waiter was happy to adapt to our needs. The food was superb. The dishes were well-planned, beautifully presented, and very flavorful."
