A16 is a restaurant and wine bar that brings to San Francisco the delicious and hospitable traditions of lively Campania —the Italian region that is home to Naples. The chic rustic/modernist venue is named after the motorway that transverses the region of Campania. The restaurant features Wood Oven Fired Neapolitan Pizza and other specialties of Campania, such as Pork Breast Braised with Olives, Herbs and Chestnuts. The wine bar serves 40 wines by the glass and half bottle carafe. The list is 60 percent Italian, mostly from the South, and the other 40 percent is New World, celebrating premiere Italian varietals grown in California along with many California wines.

"All was great except the $30 corkerage fee ... Most we've paid anywhere, and we weren't even warned about it. But food, atmosphere and service were excellent."

"The food was good, we heard a lot about the pizza, we had just had Tony's Pizza in North Beach and when we compared pizzas, Tony's was hands down the winner.A16 dough was too chewy. The Pasta and mains we ordered were good but nothing to write home about.
Our eating companions were late and I could tell that the waiter was very upset, he never said anything but it was obvious. We drank and ate quite a bit so we rang up a bill but sometimes the desire to turn tables in a restaurant ruins an evening out.
I would recommend but don't go in with high expectations.

"The food had a fresh and clever take on Italian classics. The Margherita Pizza was outstanding and the gnocchi was light and different. Our server, Nico (sp) displayed great timing and intimately knew the menu, especially desserts. A wonderful dining experience that was not rushed!"

"I know A16 is a hot spot and I went there when it first opened. This Naples rustic Italian place is a cozy place to take someone for wine, but for food go somewhere else. Don't get me wrong yes their pizza is amazing, way better than Delfina's, but everything else lacks a certain presence and is compensated by over salting every dish. We ordered the Brushetta and Baratta to start. I love a good baratta but the consistency wasn't great and it didn't taste like good mozzarella cheese. The brushetta again very disappointed. Great presentation, but the chanterelles again were over salted and even though it looked appetizing,the sodium was too over baring. Go here for wine and to split a pizza if you are hungry. For Italian go to Italia."

"There was much hype about A16 and we anxiously awaited dining there....however the food was good....not up to the level we were expecting. "The parking washorrendous--had to drive around the area about one-half hour before we finally found parking about one-half mile from the restaurant. I ordered chicken that the waiter said was juicy. In fact, it was very dry. I mentioned this to him, and he did not offer a substitute. The waitors are very busy and there is not much personal attention. Overall, not a very satisfying dining experience."

"This was without a doubt the worst meal I have ever had in San Francisco.

The beet salad was inedible, it was as if the beets had been left to soak in salt water.

The pizza was below average. Very little cheese, and way too much garlic.

The pasta was undercooked, flavorless, and a very small portion.

Ou waiter said he liked the roasted carrots and parsnips the best so we ordered that as a side dish, and while it was the best of all the food we had, it was still incredibly bland."

"The chocolate/salt/olive oil desert was the best part of the meal. Other items - bruschetta starter and mozzarella were odd. My cheese pasta was good. Prices were reasonable. However overall we found the food to be only ok - great ingredients, but preparations/recopies which we didn't enjoy much."

"After all the press, I thought A16 would be better. While a totally different restaurant, Perbacco has far superior Italian (albeit Northern style) food and ambiance. To be honest, I found A16 to be pretty run of the mill southern style Italian. Maybe we just got a bad waiter, but to get service, I had to keep asking him for everything (e.g. may we get the wine brought to the table that we ordered 20 minutes ago, may we have the check we asked for 25 minutes ago?)."

"Had the best dish I've ever had here--"Scarola (escarole) Pizza" w. fresh ricotta, crispy pancetta, plenty (on request) of hot chile, and other, less-detectable ingredients. An app of roasted Monterey sardines w. sultanas, capers, herbs, fried breadcrumbs was also first-rate. Squid ink cavatelli (little dumpling-like pasta) w. homemade baccala tomatoes, chiles was pleasant. The fennel sausage on another pizza tasted a bit tired. Chard with undetectable pine nuts, currants, garlic would have been far better had it been cooked a few more minutes. One had to chew and chew! Roasted carrots and turnips were too hard to try to chew.
Servers didn't know who got what and even delivered our sides to the wrong table.
Music was deafening at 10:30"

"Food: Extremely disappointing. Service: Very good. Friendly and attentive.

Beet salad with homemade ricotta salada: Beets and lettuce so salty we couldn't eat it.

Pasta special with lentils and garbonzo beans: The pasta tasted like the kind of macaroni you'd get from Golden Grain to make mac 'n cheese.

Ricotta Gnocchi: Nice but nothing special

Pizza: Sad. Really sad. The crust was soggy and tasteless topped with splatches of vulcanized cheese."

"I like this restaurant a lot. However, for our Valentines Day special dinner, the prix fixe menu was quite poor and over priced. the rib eye tasted like something from an Applesbees - it was sliced rubber. We did enjoy the pizzeta primi, and the gnocci primi but that was it. the chocolate-orange desert was awful.

I will be back at A16 - their regular menu choices have been good in the past - they just ripped us off on Valentines Day with a poorly executed menu."

"Though the food was well prepared & innovative, and service was professional, we felt rushed and did not experience the relaxing dinner anticipated before a show at Palace of Fine Arts. Our entree order was taken immediately upon receiving our appetizers and cocktails, and then delivered approx. 10 mins later, with our wine poured before we had made a dent in our cocktails. Had to ask for bread basket, and felt extremely rushed, as though they were trying to turn our table quickly. Had the Funghi pizza (delicious), nettle gnocchi (tasty but too spicy), pistachio cod (delish) and pasta with pork-simmered sauce - good but overrated...definitely not memorable. Good food - but for the price, noise level and rushed feeling, won't be back."

"I don't live in San Francisco, and have made a special trip to the city just for a romantic dinner at A16. This was our second time at A16, and we were looking forward experiencing more of their wonderful cuisine. Wrong, as we were very unprofessionally explained by the general manager, we had no choice in altering the menu, it was set due to a special occasion. Instead of relaxing us with humor, or wit, or just plain kindness, the general manager explained how A16 was really only interested in turning a profit. What was on the set menu was not much of a choice, since I do not eat meat. Our first experince at A16 made us great followers, spreading the gospel of A16 with many of our friends and family, a mistake we won't repeat."

"I found the food to be kind of hit-or-miss. We had some amazing gnocchi but some buccatini with a walnut-meyer lemon-anchovy pesto that was just off the mark- kind of bitter, too much walnut and not enough of the other ingredients. To start we had amazing bruschetta with chanterelles (on really fantastic bread) and some buratta that was again just not right- too salty and served with bread slices that were really overtoasted and hard. The chard side was really good. Our server gave us great wine recommendations. So, overall, veyr good but not amazing."

"Whenever I read SF dining recommendations, A16 keeps popping up. Finally, on our last SF visit, we decided to try it. We were a bit wary of reviews and hotel staff comments about the excessive heat and noise and the crowded tables but were drawn by descriptions of great food. The restaurant was, indeed, hot, loud, and packed... uncomfortably so. Lucky for us, our table for two was in the back "patio" room where we were quite comfortable. The food was good, not great -- delicious Burrata appetizer, fair beet salad, and good pasta dishes. We were glad we tried it but would not hurry back."

"This was the second time we have eaten there in 2 years ( we live on the E. coast) and we were not disappointed. Excellent food...we shared 3 items, excellent service. "My wife and I discovered and booked online, and arrived on a night there was a special wine pairing menu prepared to celebrate the presence of a visiting vintner from Italy. The waitstaff quickly size us up and led us through the process of getting comfortable. The ambience in the main room was energetic, but where we were seated much more quiet and intimate. The waitstaff took the time to let us settle in and, despite the fact that it was obviously very busy, took the time to get to know us. In the end we ordered off the special menu with paired wines, and were absolutely ravished by the food. Both our server and the sommelier knew their stuff and the chef treated her ingredients with both love and imagination. An outstanding experience!"

"This was my second visit to A16. Maybe it's because I'm a few years younger than the average age of its patrons (about 40), but on both visits I have waited for my table for over 30 minutes. Both times I was also told, "They are paying their bill. The table will be ready in just a few minutes." The first time (last September) we were given a complimentary glass of prosecco for our 45 minute wait. This time my date and I got a murmured apology for our 30 minute wait. This is one aspect of A16's service that needs to be addressed.

"Even though it was good, we came away disappointed. I never thought I would complain about the food coming too fast, but it seemed to take about 5 minutes between ordering and delivery of the dishes. They arrived before the wine! At that point we felt like they were more interested in turning over our table than our dining experience. When it's full it's very loud, and the lineup of tables along the wall makes it easier to hear the people at the next table than the person you're dining with.

Food-wise, the lamb chops were fantastic. A chard dish was uninspiring. Squid ink cavatelli wasn't bad, but made us think of slugs. At best an off-night, considering the reputation of A16. I would like to try more things here."

"Finally dropped by for a meal here and was pleasantly surprised. A16 always seems busy with people jammed around the bar at the entrance, but it's actually a very large restaurant w/an open kitchen and dining tables all the way from the front to the rear. People w/reservations are seated in the rear and "walk-ins" at high bar tables in the middle and at the counter facing the kitchen at the rear. The wait staff and busboys are in constant motion and service was very good. There is a very limited selection of entrees, but a broad selection of starters, pizzas and pasta. Had grilled sardines and a rabbit terrine (pate) with a fennel sausage pizza along w/a carafe of 2006 Turley Old Vine Zin which was all very good. I'll be back."

"Service was inconsistent and spotty, although very cordial. I had to ask for bread three times. I had the veal dish which was very disappointing--nearly the entire portion of meat consisted of fat. The pizza, which we ordered as an appetizer was quite good, but too big for two people to have as an appetizer--a fact the waiter should have pointed out. The wine was a hit though. "Confirms my theory that there just isn't good pizza in SF! Hopes were high after reading stories about A16 in Wine Spectator, but crust was flabby and didn't deliver. Overall dining experience was very nice, staff very professional and the wine list really delivers on it's promise of a deep-dive into Southern Italian wines. Both whites and reds have unique offerings and a great selection at different price points. For anyone looking to learn more about this relatively less promoted region, A16 is the place to order a bunch of bottles and get started. "Snobbish reception was incredibly off-putting, food was solid but unexceptional, service spotty, wine service seriously flawed, corkage rates very high, snooty atmosphere not warranted by quality, dining space or service. "Less than stellar given the reviews and hype. Maybe the pizza's are good but the pasta, sashimi and steak we both had was far off the mark of a good resturant. It was probably the worst steak I have ever had...period. Given it was New Years Eve and we where paying $90 per person plus the $70 wine paring (which was very disappointing as well) I would have expected much more. Don't think I would recommend this place to anyone given the incrediable resturants all on it's door step."

"Some of my friends rave about the food here. The mushroom pizza I ordered was good but nothing spectacular and a bit overpriced at $16. Wait staff was slow and not helpful at all (at the least the gentleman who was assigned to our table). Ambience is good for business lunch - probably a nice resto for a romantic dinner. A16 did not deliver the "goods" that I was expecting. Will probably give it another try and hope the dining experience will be more memorable."

"We had an amazing meal at A*16. the food was good and the service as well.
The fresh Burrata we had for an appetizer is always amazing! We had a small Salumi plate that included beef tounge, although hesitant I tried it and it was so good! It tasted like Corned Beef, and the texture was that of thinly sliced Carpacio, I am a texture person and I was a little weary not sure what to expect it was great!
I have have had a few meal here and have never had a bad meal
Oh and for sure try the pasta with Anchovy paste, walnut and Meyer lemon, I couldn't get enough."

"We tried a variety of dishes and found them to be uniformly well prepared and interesting. It's a major league restaurant. The chef has studied Italian cooking down to the granular level and the results are impressive. Dishes are creative but not overly complex. "I was disappointed with our experience. It took almost 30 minutes to be seated (with a reservation for an early dinner), I had to ask for my water glass to be filled multiple times, had to ask for bread and the food was very forgetable. The salad was ordinary, the meatball appetizer was O.K. but the vegeables were over cooked and the pizza was so boring that I had to ask for pepper to spice it up. The macaroni neopalitano was good but nothing extraordinary. Each time I eat at A16 I wonder what the hoopla is about. I believe this will be the last time I eat there voluntarily."

"My wife and I went to A16 on a busy Saturday evening. Noise level was higher than I expected from other reviews, but that could be due to how busy it was. When we walked in, people were stacked 2-deep around the bar.

Food was very good. We ordered 3 starters and split an entree. For the starters, we chose the "Roasted chanterelles..", the "Calamari and butter beans..", and the "Minestra maritata..". All were excellent, with the calamari being to-die-for. Highly recommended. For our entree, we chose the "Beef stufato..", which was good, though not as spectacular as the starters.

Wine is sold by the glass or half carafe (perfect, as we could order a red and a white and 2 bottles of wine would have been too much for us). Great service"

"Extremely consistent high-end Italian food. The menu is dominated by dishes that can be turned out of the wood-fired oven: from perfect pizza to roast mushrooms to shellfish. The pasta is all handmade and extremely delicious and mildly inventive. While they won't dazzle you with a five-star artistic presentation, I would suggest that that's hardly the point. The absolutely outstanding Italian-centric wine list features many wines from Campagnia around Rome and leaves off many of the usual suspects from Tuscany and the North. "Expectations were high due to all the hype, and I have to say that we were pleased but not blown away.

For appetizers, we shared some olives, a simple salad and a small bowl of pasta. The pasta was terrific, and if we return to A16, I will stick to that. Pricey though- a very small bowl was $10. Large bowls were $18.

For entrees, I ordered the Cod with pesto. It was fine, but actually a bit bland. My partner had the lamb sausages which were more flavorful, but a little chewy. Our vegetables were chard and potatoes. Simple but good.
The bread was terrific.

Atmosphere was festive, albeit a little noisy. Service was good.

This dinner with a small carafe of wine was about $115. A bit pricey for the meal, so we're not sure if we'll"

"A16 came highly recommended. I anticipated an amazing meal and i wasn't disappointed! I started with a simple tomato basil pizza. the crust was amazing! It was both crunchy and chewy with a small amount of char. I loved it! The pasta was also cooked to perfection. I also tried a selection of house cured meats. Im not a real meat guy but i loved the selection i was presented. I was also very impressed with the wine list. The only thing that detracted from the experience was the terrible service. The server was terrible! I had to flag him down several times, once while he sat at the bar counting tips with another server. The remaining staff was very good. The water and wine glasses were never empty and the empty plates were promptly cleared."

"I had the Maccaronara. This takes nothing away from the flavor of the dish - it was very good. However, the dish was $16 and when it was placed on my plate I was almost embarrassed about small the portion was. I understand the need for nice restaurants to not gorge their customers with piles of food, however it is quite another thing to leave your customer feeling unfulfilled. I mean, we are talking about pasta here, which is incredibly inexpensive to produce, not to mention that there weren't any ingredients in the Maccaronara that would warrant a $16 price tag. Either drop the price and serve smaller portions to induce customers to purchase multiple dishes (like an Italian tapas idea) or give the customer a larger plate of pasta."

"Went to A16 for lunch. Nothing special. Liked the dinning area and decor. The waiter was not with it this afternoon. More engaged with the wine salesman next to us. He even had several tastings during our meal. Forgot several things I had asked him to bring to the table."

"It was okay. Sometimes 'legitimate' regional cuisine is too legitimate. Chard was so undercooked (al, al dente) is was inedible (didn't expect chewing gum). Duck meatballs were rare and excellent, pork chop was tender, yet presentation with more fat than meat was not good. Mushroom and squid appetizers were excellent. Calamari was prepared perfectly, not overcooked and very tender. Best I've ever had. Sauces were light, understated but very complimentary.

Excellent, eclectic wine list!

Difficult to hear my guest across the table...we had to get within 2 foot eye contact to talk. Waiter was excellent.

Things were hopping on a Sat night...restaurant and bar was full at 5:30."
