A16 is a restaurant and wine bar bringing the delicious and hospitable traditions of lively Campania to San Francisco. The chic, rustic/modernist venue is named after the motorway that transverses
the South of Italy. The restaurant features wood oven-fired Neapolitan Pizza and other specialties of Campania such as Maccaronara with ragu napoletana and house-made ricotta salata. The wine bar serves 40 wines by the glass and half bottle carafe. The list is 60 percent Italian, mostly from the South, and the other 40 percent is New World, celebrating premiere Italian varietals grown in California along with many California wines.

"this is our go to sport for great Southern Italian cuisine. It never disappoints us. the food is authentic and well made; the ingredients are superb. And i don't know of anywhere in the Bay Area with this strong a collection of Italian wine from all regions.

"Have been to SPQR and loved it.
A bit disappointing experience at A16. Started with wine and beer. Asked to have a glass of wine paired with my dinner - didnt get the glass of wine until I was already half way done with my meal. Server was nice but didn't seem to know much about the wines but did go ask someone. Wines were great. Food was just ok. My husband had a margarita pizza and paid extra to add pancetta which came in a glob on one slice of the pizza. I had quid ink pasta - I've had better - it was very dry and not very hot - got the impression it had been sitting around. Overall, just an ok and probably wouldn't go back."

"Fantastic and friendly staff -- could not find a better crew. After glancing at the extravagant wine list I was preparing myself for a culinary feast, however I did not find that at A16. Food items were good but not spectacular. Presentation and food pairings need some work. Go for the wine/ambiance, but not the food."

"I was in the City for a conference and made a number of reservations on Open Table, one for each night, and invited a friend to dinner each night. As my friend and I sat in A16, I wondered aloud, "Why didn't I try a new place; why did I come back here?" Then the attentive service, great wine recommendation under our price point, the inventive and delicious food, and we both said, This is why! Every time I'm here, I wished I lived in the City so I could eat here more often. Of my four reservations that week, this is still my favorite."

"We found the food to be inconsistent...some was very good and other things were just not great. We also found the service to be inconsistent. Early on in the evening it was very good. As the restaurant got less crowded, it seemed the service got slower and slower. We were there for more than 2 hours and the last set of food took about 1/2 hour to come out. It seemed very slow at that point."

"The food and atmosphere at A16 are very fine. I enjoyed a repeat visit after so many years. One thing that I don't appreciate is how difficult the hostess is. This seems to be a tradition at this restaurant. Always trying to make you feel like you might not get a table, even when you have reservations. Just get past this and you will have a delightful and delicious dining experience."

"This place is overrated. My steak was ok, but the chard that came with it was so salty I could not eat it. Margarita pizza had good flavor. Service was generally unattentive and a tad pretentious. Someone brought my side 15 minutes before the entrees appeared. It is very loud and the tables are crammed together. You need to speak loudly in order to be heard. I spent the night hearing about the MBA classes of the guy 18 inches to my right. I won't be gack."

"Great food, great service, great venue, and the evening I went there was an opportunity to meet one of their purveyors (thank you). A salad of mustard greens was spectacular. "We had heard about this place for years and were very excited to finally see what the rage was all about. Sadly we were greatly dissapointed. Our party of 4 was seated upon arrival and the party began. The wine steward was helpful and knowledgable assisting us in our choice of wine. When our menu choices arrived we were a bit surprised at the very small plates. One of the entree dishes served was completely indelible. The server did take the meal off the bill, thankfully. All in all, we had a lovely visit with our friends despite the noise level and dining experience. I would have to go back again and try other menu items to rightfully suggest this restaurant.

"The over all experience I had for this restaurant is below average given the high expectation of good Italian restaurant. The service staff at the front door were ignorant. I had a reservation and we were almost the very first customers in the restaurant with many available tables at that day. However, they tried to sit us on the bar places as if we did not have any reservation or no available tables.
My wife's gnocchi with wood mushrooms was great but the Funghi pizza was terrible. The pizza chef made a mistake cooked/burned the green dandelions with the pizza. After we learned that he was supposed to put the green dandelions after cooking the pizza. My swordfish was average and the portion was very small."

Wanted some suggestions on Italian whites - something not too fruity or sweet. Was given nebulous descriptions like, "clean" and "not too fruity", thought I'd get palate descriptions, hints of something, etc.
We enjoyed the tuna conserva salad, savory. Didn't enjoy the escarole salad, thought its bitterness would be complimented by other components, on the bitter side for me.

"Even with an advance reservation, we we still put in the converted backroom alley, with the drain and sloping floor. All that was missing was the water hose so we could rinse off our own dishes! "The food and service were very high quality. The wine list is quite extensive, but does not provide any description, which would've been helpful. However, the bartender was very knowledgeable at describing the wines. The layout of the restaurant and tables is a little cramped and the noise level was very high, which did not make for a very private or romantic setting, as I'd hoped it would (celebrated an anniversary). We will return for a more casual occasion. The pizzas looked amazing! (we had pasta, which was okay, not fantastic)"

"Things didn't start well as we were seated 20 minutes late with no apologies and waiting means enduring the thunderously loud bar up front. Once we were seated, all was well. The food was excellent, Italian with refinement and finesse. We had an appetizer of whole roasted fava beans. My wife enjoyed a pizza from the wood-fired oven and I had terrific chicken meatballs. The server recommended a fine bottle of red sparkling wine. She was especially helpful in recommending dishes that worked for my lactose intolerance, which wasn't a tough challenge in a restaurant that depends on olive oil over butter and cream."

"This was our choice for a nice evening out during our recent trip to SF. The only bad thing about our A16 experience was getting there. Once there, however, we were seated immediately (with reservations, of course), and treated to a fantastic meal. We started with wine and burrata (so delicious), split a salad, and then each had a pizza. The server said that each of us could finish a pizza on our own, but we easily could have split one pie and saved room for something else. Either way, we left full and pleased. There's so much going on in the Marina District, but A16 stands out from the crowd."

From the hostesses to the floor manager, it was all about us and our experience. Everyone working was tuned in to meet our needs and did so in a fun, kind and knowing way.

"This was my second visit to A16. On the first visit we were seated at the "bar" overlooking the kitchen. Frankly it was too hot sitting there as the open ovens were a little too much to handle. On this visit however, we were seated in the back room where the ambiance was wonderful, as well as the food, and the service was positively excellent. I would highly recommend this restaurant despite the fact that parking is extremely difficult in the "Mission District"."

"The food was excellent, the staff were knowledgeable and attentive - The arugula salad was crisp fresh and a great medley of flavors. the pork chop was thick juicy and flavorful with a gorgeous fruit compote garnish. Our server was very helpful with wine selection. The restaurant was lively and packed without being overly noisy. Just a great place for nice food."

"I have been to A-16 twice so far and both times have been absolutely outstanding ! Everything is wonderfully flavorful and visually appealing. The service is very kind and even when the kitchen backs up the servers stay calm and helpful. The open kitchen is wonderful and validates the feeling that they truly care about perfecting every dish. I do not drink but they have a beautiful bar and a full wine list that is sure to make any wine-lover happy. This Italian dining establishment fit for a new age is the perfect trip for a group of friends, family, or a romantic evening."

"We only waited a minute or two after arriving to be seated. It was very crowded even with a 9:30 PM reservation so I’m glad I made it.
We started with the braised octopus, my husband’s choice. I was worried I wouldn’t like it but he was excited to try it so I told him I wanted it too…and I’m so glad I did! It was amazing…we cleaned the plate…I even ate the olives that came in it and I don’t like olives!
For our entrees; I had the Salsiccia pizza and the hubby had the squid ink tonnarelli…we shared which was awesome…you get to try more things this way!
Finally for dessert we tried the almond pound cake with strawberries and whipped cream…super d-lish!
We’ll be back for sure!"

"This is our second experience at A16 and we really love it. Great atmosphere, warm welcoming staff and tasty food. Sadly at this meal, two of our party (including myself) put a small amount of the A16 Chilli oil on our pizzas. The waiter warned it was hot but not this hot. It was unbelievably potent and sadly ruined the meal. I am used to hot curries (have lived in the UK for 6 years) but this stuff made your eyes water. I am a little surprised they serve this stuff without a strong CARE warning.
Alas we'll go back and just avoid the chilli oil. Otherwise nice evening."

"My out-of-town friend and I dined here last Friday and had an EXCELLENT time. We split a pizza, a pasta dish, and a side (roasted asparagus). The Salsiccia Pizza (mozzarella, fennel, sausage, roasted broccoli rabe, grana padano, garlic, chilies and olive oil) was really good; the 14" size was generous, the crust was thin but robust enough for the ingredients, and the combination of flavors and textures was terrific. The pasta dish looked sort of like a crepe burrito, filled with duck and ricotta (delicious). The roasted asparagus was really delicious, but of all the dishes the "value proposition" ($7 for about 7 pieces) was terrible. But with 3 glasses of prosecco, the entire bill (B4 tip) was $40 apiece. A GREAT DEAL."

"I have wanted to try out A16 for 2 or 3 years. We are huge fans of SPQR and were staying in the Marina for our anniversary, so we decided to go to A16 instead of SPQR. Unfortunately, we were disappointed by the food. First though, I want to say the staff is outstanding! Our server was one of the best I've ever had. We were seated in a very busy section of the restaurant and watched the servers work together beautifully and with skill and grace. All of them were kind and exuded excellent customer service. Now for the food...
We started with the "Tuna Panzaella with fava beans and meyer lemon". It was good, but not great-lacking any taste of the promised meyer lemon. Each course "missed" on some ingredient. Wished it wasn't so."
