Seasonal Restaurant and Weinbar
Over the years together, Wolfgang Ban and Eduard Frauneder have perfected their own modern take on Austrian cuisine - one which combines traditional techniques, contemporary innovations, and updates to some of their favorite childhood dishes. The team behind the prestigious private catering group, Elderberry Catering, chefs Ban and Frauneder, together with a small group of investors, have opened Seasonal Restaurant & Weinbar, their first venture open to the public. Their goal is to provide elegant home-cooking in a sleek but welcoming setting.
The chefs at Seasonal pride themselves on maintaining the utmost quality in their cuisine, and therefore, consistent with its name, the kitchen uses only the freshest seasonal ingredients. The visual presentation of each plate is the final step in the process, and the chefs have ensured that the look of each plate matches the refinement of the food itself and the décor, creating an unforgettable dining experience.

"This was our 3rd time to dine at Seasonal where the food and wine always reminded us of the years we lived in Vienna, Austria. Very disappointingly, the Gulasch this time had a very weird lemon-like taste which we have never experienced in Austria, Germany or Hungary which are typical areas in Europe to serve Gulasch. The waiter was kind enough to ask the chef who supposedly said that this was the way Gulasch has to taste....I don't think so. Fortunately, NYC offers many alternatives, so we won't be back to Seasonal"

"From the dingy awning outside to the teeny, crowded tables and dinged drywall inside, this place really needs a makeover. The food was fine (tho certainly not Wallse) but the service was erratic, almost unprofessional. Have you ever been asked if it was OK to consolidate an empty table with yours you while you were still eating?
Could not possibly recommend this in its current state."

"The food was very good but the service was inattentive and did not match the level of the food. I was surprised that the restaurant was far from busy...many empty tables...but wait staff spent lots of time milling around. Perhaps others knew about the poor service and decided the quality of the food didn't make up for the service...or lack of it. To add insult to injury, they made a mistake on the bill despite being unbusy!"

"What a delightful find. A quiet little romantic gem that brought us back
to Vienna without the long flight and jet lag.
The smoked Artic Char appetizer was amazing as was the lobster and

"Seasonal's food is creative, tasty, and original. My beef carpaccio was delicate and flavorful. My friends tried the other appetizers -- also great. (The waiter finally approached our table after our entire party had been seated in an empty restaurant and ignored for about half an hour.)
The wine list is only so-so. (When my friend asked the waiter if there was a sweet Reisling, oozing haughty disdain, he responded: "I don't have sweet Reisling." After the waiter took our wine and food orders he never returned to our table.)
Each of us thought our main course and dessert were impeccable.
Please note: the men who delivered our food to the table and cleared the table were quite nice, and the hostess was also perfectly courteous!"

"Went there on a quiet Monday night. Wait staff was attentive and very polite, even encouraging us to stay longer to finish our wine.
Food was good. There are some bold combinations in their dishes which really reflects the chef's attempt to push boundaries. Every thing was cooked very well and the flavors, though new, seemed to work. A foodie would definitely enjoy."

"Shockingly mediocre, with bland and unimaginative food. "Spring Onion Soup" was tasteless consume with a few scallions. "Flat Iron" was like version Pot au Feu, but the meat was flavorless and cooked in the same bland consume. Goulash was red from the paprika but no peppery zing. The service was inexplicable: it was almost empty when we arrived, but we were largely ignored."

"The service was atrocious. Very bored servers with their noses held high in the air definitely detracted from what could have been a very nice dining experience. We will not return, which is sad because we love Austrian food and were willing to pay the premium that this restaurant charges for it. Alas, the service was terrible . . . . ."

"So, I say I'd be back, and an old college roommate thought going to an Austrian place in nyc would be humorous, so we went.
Weihenstephan isn't something you see on draft everyday either, which was appreciated. What I realized when I was there this time, is that I've been here twice, and while I have not worked my way through the whole menu yet, it will only take a few more trips to do so. I'm wondering if there is "the other menu" like in southern Germany that occasionally will have nothing but asparagus dishes on it. I'll have to ask next time I go, still a great spot."

"We opened the place for dinner because we had 7 PM show tickets, so it was very quiet. Wine list is almost exculsively European wines. We went with the waiter's recommendation, which was fine--an Austrian wine akin to chardonnay. We both got teh Wiener Schnitzel, which was very good, although not as good as we've had in Vienna at Figmuller's (sp?). This is a good option if you have early Broadway show tickets since it's in easy walking distance."

"Wonderful presentation of contemporary Austrian cuisine. Every dish was perfectly crafted and presented. The white asparagus salad was outstanding as was the masterfully prepared "Tafelspitz" (boiled beef). From Kaisergoulash to the Kaiserschmarn for dessert everything was as good as could be had in Vienna and possibly even better. Wine slections paired perfectly and a wonderful, relaxing time was had by all."

"I love this place! We have eaten here many, many times and will keep coming back. One important attribute of Seasonal is its consistency. The menu changes only slightly, so you can reliably expect to always find the Wiener Schnitzel, the Tafelspitz, the poschiertes Ei, etc, etc. There are some seasonal additions (eg, we had a white asparagus salad), but mostly we are talking about superbly executed Austrian cuisine."

"My friend's filet mignon was outstanding, perfectly prepared as she requested, medium rare. She's tasted steaks in many of the best steak houses, but said this was the best she's ever been served. I ordered the wiener schnitzel and thoroughly enjoyed it. The coating was light and not greasy and I could taste the veal which was tender. The sides that came with each of the orders were not typical and they were delicious plus well suited for the entree. Cucumber and potato salads at Seasonal are prepared so they are light. The staff was very helpful and appropriately attentive. The owner came by at the end of our meal to ask us about it and share a glass of sweet wine. Have to say that added an exclamation point to a wonderful dinner!"

"Seasonal serves up authentic, modern, and classy Viennese food perfectly executed and, for their $30 lunch pris fixe, really reasonable! My meal: spring onion soup (the broth was like an onion soup but much more floral, reminiscent of spring; the peppery beef at the bottom of the bowl gave heat and warmth, a reminder of the winter just past), flat iron cooked in an oxtail consomme (the flat iron was fall apart tender and juicy and consomme was amazingly flavorful; it came with a little potato cake, lightly fried and three sauces - spinach, apple, and horseradish), and the sacher torte (rum soaked, not too sweet and completely delicious)."

"Fantastic Food, service and atmosphere. The service is prompt without any delay. It offers a formal dining experience but with a very friendly down to earth atmosphere. The staff are very friendly and the service is outstanding. The food was spectacular and the presentation immaculate. We had a question about food and were amazed to find that that the Chef (Wolfgang) himself came to your table to answer any queries you have. He was gracious answered all our questions patiently and we ended up spending almost 2 h after our dinner just enjoying the drinks and atmosphere. We will be back for a culinary delight again very soon."

"We had an exceltopnql experience at Seasonal Restaurant. Food was superb. Light and elegant version of traditional Austrian-German fare. Schnitzel had flaky light crust and spaetzle was in lightly flavored white sauce. Appetizers were beautiful and tasty. Poached egg with lobster foam and arugula salad both top notch.
Service was responsive and informative about ingredients and menu and wine choices.
Setting was white and black and gray simple. Nothing fancy but focus was on food and service.
We will definitely go to seasonal on our next trip."

"We chose this restaurant based on its reviews and its proximity to our hotel on Central Park South. A smaller dining room with questionable artwork (not relaxing/pleasant to look at). Service was terrific, and only lagged a bit as the evening went on...even after dessert service I had to ask for the check. Traditional items such as Weiner Schnitzel and Spaetzle were delicious, and I particularly loved the Bellini with Elderflower liquor and Pear Puree, and my salad with paper thin shaved beets was very tasty. I liked the way the present their cucumber salad as well. A pleasant experience but not sure if I'd ever feel the need to go back...too many other great choices in NYC."

"My friend and I, who I had met many years ago in Vienna when we were in college, found Seasonal a perfect place to reminisce. A minimalist decor, but comfortable and intimate interior combined with a welcoming and attentive staff made for a lovely dining experience. We shared the Spatzle entree to start and this, along with the apple streudel for dessert was the highlight. I found the Wiener Schnitzel tough, though my friend had no complaints. Will try again."

"The service and food at Seasonal remain as good as they have been for years, though the menu options seem a little more limited. (More fish & poultry entrees would have been appreciated.) The wine list, with such depth of Austiran choices, is unusual and interesting, if pricey, and the sommelier was personable and more than helpful.
The ambiance is seriously downgraded by the musty smell that pervades the space. There is a large water stain on the ceiling, suggesting a past problem left too long unattended. There's no excuse for this in a serious restaurant of otherwise high quality."

"I loved the atmosphere. Elegant decor, music playing low, great for having a civilized conversation. Grown-up in a good sense.
Traditional Viennese dishes are here but reinvented, not always successfully. Cucumber salad was shredded, spun and rolled into a dense cylinder like green shredded wheat. Rinderfilet looked like it was conceived by Frank Gehry. Also, why boring cold potato salad on the same plate with the post-modern weiner schnitzel?. Seemed like a mistake.
Weirdest was the "deconstructed" schwarzwälder kirschtorte -- chocolate filling in a glass tumbler, cherries and sorbet on a separate plate. Would have been delicious if someone had made a cake with these ingredients!
Flavors were all good, throughout."
