"Headed to Max's Tavern recently for Sunday brunch with the family. The food was terrific - we all had something different so we could taste around the table. My server steered me toward a whitefish dish served w/ asparagus and a creamy sauce. I was in the mood for savory and that's what I got. Delicious. Service was great. We were brunching before a matinee at a nearby theatre so asked the server to pace the food within our time frame. She did exactly that, and we made the theatre without any stress on the time, while being able to enjoy the entire meal without rushing. I am regular at Max's Tavern for lunch during the workweek and they never fail to provide me a good meal, a good meeting venue and great service."

"Appetizers were unsatisfactory. Oysters were mostly all bread crumbs and the mussel's broth was not good. The garlic bread did not have a taste of garlic, but rather had small cloves of garlic inserted. Filet mignon was ordered medium rare and served well done. Overall very pricey and the food was not worth the high costs. We will not return."

"We asked if they had seating outside and they said they'd get a table set up. It took at least 15 minutes to get seated. In general the service was slow, but the order for the table next to us got lost and they were waiting at least an hour. Since it was mother's day and we were visiting, it was fine. At 2 PM, they had their dinner menu and about 6 brunch items. They said they'd make a burger, but not a turkey burger. I had the Tuscan Salad and it was very good. The dinner entrees were pricey, and heavy, for a lunchtime meal, but others in our party seemed to enjoy their meals, but didn't offer praise. Waitress forgot the sides for the Frittata, doubted it came with them so we had to show her the menu. More training needed for staff."

"We all had a really nice lunch after our morning visit to the Basketball Hall of Fame. It was as good as all the other Max Restaurants that we have been to before, and if we are in Springfield, we won't hesitate to eat there again."

"Had a 130p reservation for Mother's Day. Waited15 minutes, not unreasonable for the occasion. Service was excellent though both kitchen and bar were VERY backed up. Our server kept us abreast of the delays & apologized profusely. When food arrived, it was delicious and obviously had not been sitting around. Lobster gnocchi was wonderful & the lobster tail garnish was perfectly cooked. Fish and chips entree was excellent as well. No room for dessert but the special dacquoise sounded yummy. One complaint- 2 of us ordered a Hemingway which was essentially a daiquiri glass stuffed with consolidated ice with a very tiny drink poured over it-poor value at 9$. Bring back the old martini menu please! They were great."

"We've been going to Max's for years and always make reservations. We made reservations for Tuesday night @ 5PM and requested a specific table. When we arrived at 4:45 the restaurant was not busy however the table we requested was being used. The hostess told us they thought the party would have left by that time. When we asked for a different table we were told that it was reserved. Our question is... why wouldn't they have told the people who were seated at our table the same thing? The food was somewhat disappointing this time. My parents ordered the Dayboat Scallop dish and thought it was not up to its usual standard. I would still recommend this restaurant for dinner because every other experience we have had there was a good one."

"We wanted some place different & gave Max's a try. The food was a little fancier than I prefer (with sauces etc). But the night was very tasty with the sauces on the side. We are both on a diet & split the main entre with extra side vegies. The portion sizes were good. The wait staff was attentive but didn't hover. We went mid week and were seated right at our reserved time. I would definitely return here again."

"This place has a love affair with liquid smoke! Everything tasted like it was doused in the stuff. Two of us had mussels, they were sandy and bathed in liquids smoke. Another person had a a steak, which was nothing more than averag. That also tasted very smokey! Yuck! Very expensive for a below average experience. We wanted to avoid the chain restaurants, but we wished we hadn't."

"My boyfriend and I went out for our 2 yr anniversary to Max's. We received great service, our waitress was right there if we needed her and everything came out in a timely manner. The food was average. I wasn't wowed.
Overall it was a pleasant time, I wouldn't say the food was worth the price. We have better luck with steak at Texas Roadhouse than any other restaurant we've been too.
But the outdoor seating looks fun for groups going out for drinks? It was too chilly for us to sit out there. They had nice couches and lounge areas"

"Dinners of Hilda's meatloaf, the swordfish special, and the lobster gnocchi were delicious! The waitstaff were more than pleasant and friendly. Everyone smiled and seemed to really enjoy working there. Dinner was unrushed and enjoyed at a leisurely rate even though the restaurant was full. We didn't have to wait long for our meals and they were as pleasing to our sight as they were to our taste buds . A lovely evening!"

"Wife and I both had the filet mignon. I had crab cake and sauce on my filet over garlic mashed potatoes with asparagus. Both of us found the meal to be fantastic. For desert, we split the german chocolate bread pudding. That was terrible, dry and hard as a brick. Each of us could handle only 1 bite. After dinner coffee was very good and I had a couple of glasses of pinot noir with my meal which was also very good. Overall, great for dinner but I'll do desert somewhere else next time."

"Such a disappointment. Having dined at Max's previously we were anticipating wonderful food. Our expectations were quickly dashed. Over-priced, over-salted, over-cooked, bland sides with poor texture. One of our party noted that they had the worst meatloaf they've ever had that night. Two of the party had the strip steaks - neither were cooked the desired temperature and both were terrifically over-salted. It was a very expensive poor meal."

"We went primarily for the Prime Rib special. They had the regular cut and the Kings cut for $5 more. My wife had the regular and I had the King's cut. The piece of meat I had was fantastic. It was cooked as I ordered and was a high quality piece of meat. My wife's on the other hand was very disappointing. It was cooked properly but the quality of the meat was not what we expected. There was a large amount of fat and my wife was turned off by it and trimmed up the remaining to bring home. Strange that there would be that contrast in the meat. The drinks were great and the dessert was delicious. I was happy with our server Sean. Sean recommended a nice petite syrah that went well with the meal."

"I had the fish and chips. It didn't taste a better than some that I've had at less expensive places. Fries were good. My guest has the crab cakes and a salad which she liked and it was prsented nicely. I wouldn't hesitate to go again, but I find it pricey."

"We celebrated our 23rd anniversary. I had pre-ordered flowers to be delivered to the restaurant. I spoke with the reservation desk and I arranged what time they were to be brought out as well as pre-ordered a couple of appetizers. I even requested a certain booth. Everything went off without a hitch. The staff even gave us a signed anniversary card from everyone. Very friendly server and hostess desk."

"My boyfriend and I wanted to try out a new place for dinner. One of my co-workers recommended that I go here so I made reservations for Friday the 15th. The atmosphere was quiet yet moderate. It was not too noisy. It was a very romantic setting. Our waitress was extremely nice! I had the Pan-Pressed Murray’s Chicken and he had Steak Au Poivre which was in a Brandy peppercorn sauce. His steak was a bit spicy because of the peppercorn but he said he enjoyed it very much. My chicken was slow roasted and very tender. It came with Brussels sprouts, local Honeycrisp apple, dried cranberry and bourbon apple cider jus. It was lovely. I would recommend Max's Tavern to anyone looking for a delicious romantic meal."

"Everything was great except to people to close together. Can hear everyone around conversations because you need to speak so loud to be heard.
Bar tender very friendly and knowledgeable. Waiter was very good and very helpful in helping us decide what to order. I would not recommend the prime rib as there was more fat then meet and not worth the price."

Overall, poor restaurant performance. Six customers left not happy."

"The waitress we had (I don't recall her name) was very friendly and provided excellent service - very attentive. We were celebrating a 70th birthday and not only brought over a dessert with a candle, she also presented a card with all the wait staff's signatures. A very special touch!"

"Max's Tavern is delish, it is on the pricey side.... however totally worth the price.. my mom and I had the filet mignon and it was cooked exactly to our liking... melted in my mouth and was 10oz.. def a big size. my husband and dad both had filet a la oscar and they both polished their plates!! We go on special occasions, and always make reservations first..."

"I have been to Max's Tavern and most of the other Max's restaurants many times. I have a Max Vanatage Card. I am normally a big fan of theirs, but on this occasion, I was amazed at how poorly I was treated. We had out of town guests and had a 6:30 reservation, but did not get seated untile 7:00. We couldn't even get a drink at the bar while we waited, b/c it was very crowded and they had only ONE bartender. We simlpy couldn't get his attention. I understand running a bit late on reservations, but a half an hour?! Based on my years of going to Max's I'd still recommend it but this was disappointing."

"I absolutely love Max's Tavern. The food is delicious and there are menu items for everyone's price range. I have been to Max's Tavern several times and the experience has always been great; the waiters and waitresses are friendly and not overly attentive. However, the restaurant does get loud, but I suppose that's just because it's so popular!Overall, I would definitely recommend Max's Tavern to anyone who is looking for an amazing meal."

"This was our second time to Max's - and our first visit was less than a month ago. While the food was just as good as our first visit (try the chicken), the service was not. Granted our server the first visit was exceptional, but the most recent serverwas a disappointment. We will definitely go again - the food is that good, but had this been our first visit instead of our second, I don't know if I could confidently promise that, based on the service."

"The food was excellent and the service was amazing and accomodating. My only complaint is the lighting was very dim. Our group of five in the corner was certainly in a dark place. This should not color your impression of the restaurant in any way, just a note to be aware of."
