Staple & Fancy Mercantile
Located in Seattle’s thriving Ballard neighborhood, Staple & Fancy Mercantile is the latest venture of celebrated chef Ethan Stowell. Housed in a beautifully renovated early 1900’s building, this intimate restaurant showcases Ethan’s simple Italian inspired cooking style. The popular “Chefs Choice” menu offers guests a one-of-a-kind dining experience with dishes created from uniquely sourced products, local seasonal ingredients, and house-made pastas. An a la carte menu is also available. The small bar is perfect for snacking and offers a tasteful selection of aperitifs and cocktails. The wine list is Euro-centric with a thoughtful selection of Northwest wines.

"WOW! What a treat. We deliberated before just going for the chef's menu (I lobbied for this all along) and we were not let down! One tip for you, come hungry! They continued to bring so much food, all of which was excellent. From the little starter plates to the pasta, main dish, and dessert... It was absolutely amazing!! Loved it and we will be back!"

"I arranged to pre-order dinner for my wife and I to celebrate Mothers' Day. I had talked with Jen from the restaurant office, who helped me with my order. She was outstanding at giving suggestions, and when we arrived, they were prepared for us. The waiter, whose name escaped me, was excellent, patiently explaining each course as it was served. My wife was very pleased, I was very pleased, and I picked up style points from my wife for the dinner choices I made. Thanks to all at Staples & Fancy Mercantile for a great dinner and a great time."

"This is one of our favorite restaurants. The food and service has always been great. We always order the chef's menu. The small bites are a perfect way of experiencing a variety of taste. We leave feeling content but not overstuffed. My only complaint is that it is somewhat noisy so we usually go on Monday nights when it is not so busy. Great food and service at a very reasonable price. Try it, you will like it:)"

"Went for Seattle Restaurant week. The fried oysters were out of this world delicious! The house made smoked ricotta w/honey was super tasty. I do wish that I ordered the pork loin because I had a bite of my friends and it was cooked perfectly and melted in my mouth. I ordered the gnocchi because it is by far one of my favorite dishes but the pork just stood out more in my mind. The chocolate terrine was by far my favorite dessert.
Our server was very nice and attentive without hovering over our table. He was great about spacing out our courses without making us feel rushed.
I can't believe I have never been to this restaurant before, but I will definitely be back! I really want to try the chef's menu where you can pay $45/pe"

"Went here with some friends and our child (10 y.o.) for my husband's birthday. We chose to enjoy the chef's tasting menu, which was the way to go. They modified it for our referenced dietary restrictions (one pescatarian and one no shellfish) and yet to food was richly varied and plentiful. We were brought plate after plate of interesting foods - fried duck eggs, fresh ricotta with honey, pea vine salad . . . and yet our offering were different from the table next to us."

"We love food and plan our vacations around Michelin restaurants. Knowing this, friends recommended Staple and Fancy. We'd been to "How...Wolf" several years ago and were not impressed with the food or service, but since S&F came so highly recommended we thought we'd give it a shot. We did the Chef's menu and I felt like I was at a picnic with food from a GOOD deli but a deli none the less. Our server was not helpful; any question we asked seemed to be an imposition; a definite "if you don't get it-too bad for you" vibe. The best things we had was salad with champagne dressing and strawberry sorbet. If you're a foodie and want good Italian food and good service go to Altura, Cafe Juanita, or Volterra."

"We were here during Seattle Restaurant Week and duly impressed. Although the restaurant was full, there was no compromise on the quality of the food. Appetizers ( 5 dishes to a table) were delightful and the flavours were well balanced and complemented each other well. For our entrees, i had the spanish mackerel with salsa verde and roast potatoes, and my husband, the pork loin. They were both delicious and cooked just right. Our desserts- a yummy chocolate terrine and ricotta cheesecake topped off a fantastic meal. Service was great and accomodating. Our server ( a pity we did not get her name) although young, was very efficient and friendly. We will definitely be back for more...totally worth the long drive!"

Our waiter was friendly and welcoming, but the rest of the wait staff (and in fact the kitchen staff as well) seemed very tight and too serious. Aren't they having any fun? Instead of ordering off the menu, we opted for the tasting menu. If you eat here, try the tasting menu! They accomodated my dairy & gluten free allergies and served the rest of our party dairy-filled treats as well. All-around it was a fun and delicious dinner."

"Four of us ordered the Fancy menu and we were delighted! Out of many dishes, there were only one or 2 dishes (garbanzo beans with cuttle fish and another fish dish) that we didn't care for. Otherwise, we got to taste dishes that we wouldn't have necessarily ordered which made for an dining experience rather than just going out to dinner.

"Fantastic food!! This was my first Ethan Stowell experience and we ordered the chef's special for $45 where they just bring you an assortment of whatever the chef decides. Best decision we could have made! We had 5 appetizers, 2 salads, 2 pastas, 2 meats and 2 desserts. We were stuffed and it was a great sampling of everything. That is definitely the way to go!"

"Our server had the perfect balance of responsiveness and unobtrusiveness. We went for the chef's 4 course dinner and were delighted with every course. The amount of appetizers was a bit stunning and everything was delicious. Our party particularly loved the smoked ricotta cheese drizzled in honey and served with grilled bread, the pork with wine soaked cherries and the beautiful and delicious sushi style appetizer served over tapenade with blood orange. The entire dinner was delightful, flavorful and worth the trip.
We will definitely go back again."

"We ordered the Chef's tasting menu and it was great. I loved all the appetizers, especially the beet salad, the home made ricotta cheese with smokey baguette and the fried oysters!! YUM. Entrees were both very good, duck pasta and grilled scallops...and oh my gosh, the dessert was perfect (strawberry rhubarb pie with mascarapone ice cream). Service was super, very knowledgeable server and the ambiance was perfect for my taste. Not too loud but not too quiet, lively atmosphere and just the right amount of lighting. I love the design of the building too."

"This is a very busy, trendy restaurant. We went there because it had been rated recently as providing the best food in town and I looked forward to that fabulous food. We had the "family style" dinner for $45 each. There's a lot of food, mostly misses and a few hits. The beef was dry, the chickpea dish bland and too spicy at the same time.The scallops were good.

"Creative use of original architecture. Old wood floors, existing old brick and soft woods are great at absorbing sound. Very welcoming seating arrangements. As for food, creative and delicious, like the smoked ricotta cheese with Honey drizzle. Not much of a bar, but a comfy place to wait for a table. Come here for the food, excellent service and great ambiance. All in all, a very FUN experience."

"This was our second visit and we loved the food. However, the service seemed rushed. It felt as if our server wanted to get us out of there ASAP. We ordered the chef's dinner --- just let the food come to our table, and the food was fantastic. But the last time we did this, the plates were delivered more slowly; not rapid fire, as they were on Saturday. We would have liked to have stretched out our meal more. What we were hoping would be a relaxing three hour dinner took under 90-minutes. At some restaurants --- that's fine. At a place like Staple and Fancy, that's not what we were expecting, and it will probably keep us from going back for awhile."

"I can't really comment on the overall menu (our menu was prefixe menu for valentines day) but i can say that from the prefixe menu the food was excellent. The plethora of items that we got to indulge in was overwhelming. Everything from oysters to beef tongue to beet and blood orange salad. i'll be sure to write a full review once i experience their entire menu."

"Staple and Fancy has a nice cozy feel to it and is good for any occasion. The service is wonderful - very attentive! Every time we go the food has always been presented attractively and is ymmy.
