Max's Oyster Bar is the fourth creation of restaurateur Richard Rosenthal and his partner Bob Cooke, formerly of Legal Seafood Restaurant Company. Located among unique shops, coffeehouses, and several restaurants, Max's Oyster Bar compliments West Hartford Center's charming and growing shopping district. The understated atmosphere of muted colors and comfortable seating allows diner's to focus on the truly important, the food. Featuring modern renditions of classic American seafood, Max's Oyster Bar menu has something for everyone. While seafood is the focal point, there are selections for even the most land bound. "service and appetizer were great,and we are big fried calamari critics.However the lobster mac and cheese was terrible.It was dry and we were told it would be creamy.Try using basic cheeses and don"t get so fancy.Baked cod had no life to it.My sons paella was fair but I think he was just being kind.My daughters steak was the best dinner(really in a seafood place) Shellfish is probably good but how bad can you mess that up,"

"A bit on the pricier side but good quality all around. The soft shell crab special was good, but the Vietnamese noodles were not! Stick with the fries. Service was spotty - maybe a new waiter? Waited 20 minutes for cocktails and there were only a few tables filled. Espresso was okay - don't think Europe here. But a lovely experience on the whole."

"We all know that the Max group is not a place for a thin wallet, but the food and service were worth the $$$. Service that Sunday was not up to par. Simple requests like lemon for a glass of water, was received after 3 attempts, as the server breezed past us to other tables. We had to ask for bread and where are the wonderful bits they used to serve while looking at the menu? Our server offered to bring some over AFTER we were served our first course...I recall the early days of Max Oyster Bar when the servers not only introduced us the delicious Max carrots but gave us a printed recipe! Those were the little touches that hooked us.
Overall the food saved the day again and we will return for that.."

"Food perfect as always. Service correct and relatively unobtrusive. Wine was tremendous. Sea bass excellent, as was the paella. However, it was Mother's Day, and the place was packed with loud and less than well-behaved kids, which significantly detracted from the overall experience. We will of course return, but may be a bit more discerning in choosing the time frame."

"Through Open Table I requested a table in the main dining area, I was sat by the front door next to the hostess station. It's primarily a seafood place, but since we started with the seafood sampler and then a bowl of clam chowder, I ordered the rib-eye steak as my entree. So blame me for ordering steak at a seafood restaurant but as this is an upscale establishment I assumed they would prepare and present a good cut of beef, I couldn't have been more wrong. The rib-eye was laced with connective tissue, I couldn't cut it or chew it. My dinner companions did enjoy their seafood entree's, but our side order of mushrooms, which we noted to our server were not presented with our entree's were never served."

"We hadn't been here in a while so I had forgotten how loud it is. However, we had a table back by the raw bar and I was pleased that it was more quiet than out on the main floor. Will request a table there the next time. Our waiter highlighted the featured wines and we started with a glass of rosé. I was getting the baked stuffed lobster so didn't want an appetizer. We split a Caesar salad. It was good but you could taste the anchovy parse. The stuffing in the lobster was heavy on breadcrumbs and light on seafood. The lobster was very good and next time I'd try the herb grilled. My husband had the NY Strip and thoroughly enjoyed it. Finished with the creme brûlée and a biscotti. Very nice meal."

"Max's Oyster bar is a very good restaurant. It would be a great restaurant if they put a wall between the bar and the restaurant like Max Downtown has, so that it wasn't so loud. Perhaps they think that it adds something to be loud, but it isn't a good restaurant to go with friends with whom you want to have a conversation. If you want good food, and don't need to talk, this would be a perfect choice."

"We've been frequent visitors to this excellent seafood restaurant, but this time stopped in at 10 pm after a nearby concert and discovered a late-night "happy hour" menu, valid Saturday night from 10 pm to midnight, with reduced prices on some of our favorite items, including fresh oysters for $1 each and a yummy tuna burger and fish tacos for just $2 or $5. Have to sit in the bar area for these specials, which makes the experience a little noisier, but great value!"

"The food was very good. I had the trout which needed some more seasoning, but my wife's paella was wonderful. Our guest had the tuna which he liked very much. The waiter was nice, but he spilled wine and water on the table and just added a napkin over it. This resulted in us eating with a wet tablecloth during the entire dinner."

"It wasn't great. The fish was $30 and when it came it was way overcooked so I couldn't really eat it.
Our waiter was good but the hostess was extremely rude. We had made a reservation but the table wasn't ready until 15 minutes after we got there. We don't drink alcohol so we just sat and waited in the bar so the time passed extremely slowly. There were open tables but the hostess wouldn't seat us until a smaller table for 2 opened up. Finally she sat us at the worst possible table in the middle of a lot of foot traffic.
It was Friday night but there really isn't any excuse for this. I was a huge fan of this restaurant but this experience really turned me off!"

"Outstanding raw bar selection with delicious seafood. Superbly prepared hot entree (sauteed cod). Creative and tasty cocktail for oyster lovers, the Max's Shucked Oyster with a fresh raw oyster shucked into a tasty, minimalist Bloody Mary with Absolut Peppar. Service was crisp and attentive but not overbearing. The environment is loud, bustling and busy, a little too energetic for a relaxing dinner but not unpleasant. But the food is really the highlight."

"My fiancé and I love the food here enough to overlook the ever declining service. I understand that Friday and Saturday are busy nights, but the snails pace our servers have operated at in the past year is ridiculous. Fortunately the food is great, just be prepared to linger for a long time."

"Max Oyster Bar is like the very best of the big city restaurants. It is amazing. Food was outstanding - I don't know how they do it. From the colossal white shrimp to the chopped salad to the sea scallops, filet mignon and desserts - all were perfect. Two person tables are not too close to each other so that others conversation is an annoyance. Service was attentive but not disruptive and timed perfectly between courses. I would recommend Max Oyster Bar to anyone looking for a night of fine dining."
