Avenues Bistro - Brookside
Avenues Bistro offers an array of selections for every palate and features many regional European specialties. Chef/Owner Joe Birch, voted one of “America’s Top 25 New Chefs” in 2007, comes from a diverse European ancestry and has for the past 20 years traveled across and studied the cuisines of Europe. These travels & experiences, his vast culinary training, & many of his own family recipes are the inspiration behind both the concept and the creation of the dishes at Avenues.
Birch’s kitchen is led by Executive Chef Mario Galan, a rising star on the Kansas City culinary scene. In 2007 he & Birch earned Avenues “Best New Restaurant- Kansas City”.
Followed up in 2008 as being recognized
by Ingrams Magazine as one of "Kansas Citys Top 3 Overall Restaurants".
Equally impressive is the wine program at Avenues. Recognized as having both great value & selection, the restaurant was recently awarded Wine Spectator’s “Award of Excellence” & also Wine Enthusiasts "Award of Distinction

"Disappointing. I was anticipating an award winning meal from restaurant's web-site. Maybe they WERE that good in 2011, but no longer unfortunately. We made reservations for the lunch buffet on Father's Day, and I was surprised and somewhat nervous when we arrived and found a 3/4 full room. On Father's Day? Oh-oh.
And my suspicions were justified by the food. I ordered the House Specialty, the Crab Fritte which arrived promptly. But it was strictly average, edible, but just that and no more. Bland, not what I was expecting, especially for the price. I wouldn't order it again at $1. I should definitely mention that the buffet is included in the price for the meal. However that didn't stand out either. My wife had the buffet, thought it poor."

"overall the food was very good. six of us. Seated right at reservation time. The two steak entrees were superb. Likewise the short ribs and ravioli. All sides were excellent. Do not recommend any fish - over cooked and under-seasoned on the two entrees ordered at our table. Noise level was almost unbearable(Saturday night). Could not talk across the table and be heard. Left with a headache from the noise. Recommend that people avoid the weekends here. Have not had that problem during the week on other visits"

"This was a deliciously flavor-filled dinner with great variety of choices (which we 4 took advantage of). We ended up taking enough home for another meal apiece. They placed the food in foil containers so reheating was a dream. Server Jessica was very, very good. Our drink, appetizer and food orders were perfect done and served with a friendly smile. We will definitely go back again!"

"The Avenues Bistro is our favorite place to dine when we travel to Kansas City. Brookside is a quaint little neighborhood just south of the Plaza. The food quality and service are always consistently good. Prices are reasonable and one does not have to spend a fortune on wine to get a decent bottle.
Yes, there is energy in the dining room....it can get noisy. But, I look at it as people enjoying themselves out for the evening...just like us.
Do yourself a favor and try this place if you haven't already. You will pat yourself on the back for making such a wise choice."

"It was a wonderful happy hour experience which led to our $20 dinner before 6pm. It was an amazing time. We really enjoyed showing Avenues Bistro off to our friend in from out of town. "I loved every aspect of my trip to Avenues Bistro. The restaurant was clean and well-decorated. Our waiter was both friendly and knowledgeable, and recommended some great drinks to us (get the strawberry lemonade cocktail). Our appetizers were amazing (Bacon-Wrapped Dates and Crab-Stuffed Mushrooms) and arrived quickly. My girlfriend ordered the Seared Ahi Tuna and I got the Surf and Turf with 2 crab cakes (very little breading, absolutely delicious) and an 8oz Filet Mignon that was perfectly cooked. For such a nice restaurant, the portions were larger than expected. We got the Creme Brulee and the Creme Brulee Bread Pudding for desserts and they were flawless. Go to this restaurant ASAP - you won't be disappointed."

"I can say I like the new colors but I think the original colors were more dramatic and gave it a more elegant look. But no question this is lighter and nice. The food as always was good but the service was definitely off. It took a long time to get service, drinks, etc. I waited nearly 10 minutes for sugar for the ice tea and when she did put it on the table she literally reached behind the curtain, picked it up and set it on the table - about 5 seconds worth of effort. They were about 80% full but I've been there before when it was nearly full and had quicker and more efficient service. I also think the wine list has gotten pricier. There really aren't any bargains unless you go at happy hour."

"A wonderful brunch that included a prepared (not buffet table) entree. The buffet itself was well presented and tasty. Having a fresh-prepared entree ordered off the menu in addition to the buffet was a pleasant surprise. The entrees were perfectly prepared and delicious. And, seriously? $12.95 per person? Where have they been all my life? More appropriately, why have I not known about this, the absolute best value in Kansas City, my whole life?"

"We did a pre-Mother's day Sat lunch and were very pleased overall. The only negative is that the Sat lunch menu is rather limited, but the three of us all found something we liked and were happy with our choices. Our server, Kaitlin, was excellent and very personable. We have eaten at Avenues several times and have never been disappointed. And the location allows you to enjoy other businesses in the area."

"This is one of our favorite restaurants. The food is excellent - creative, flavorful, presented well, and constantly improving. The staff is always friendly, helpful, and attentive. "It was a wonderful, low key evening, this is it. The service was impeccable. Our bottle of wine was amazing and reasonably priced. We had the crab cakes, lobster mac n cheese and the tuna. All three were perfect. The atmosphere was designed for intimate groups of older adults."

"This was our first visit to Avenues Bistro. We made a reservation and arrived to a 15 minute wait for our table. The dining room was full and brought the noise level to "energetic." This is nice if you don't want to feel like other people are listening in to your conversation.
The food was good, the menu is not very long, so it helps that everything on it is a winner.
Our waiter was not interested in helping us navigate the menu or with anything else really, he seemed busy and preoccupied, I assume he thought we knew what we were doing. He was never rude exactly, but it was not around much and had no opinion about any of the dishes when asked. When I told him I was considering a salad, he said, "So are you having it or not?""

"My experience at Avenues was GREAT! I enjoyed the atmosphere, food and drinks. This place really knows how to sell quality food ans service. I took my girlfriend there for her birthday and it had been her first time. She felt special and raved about the bacon wrapped dates... Would recommend this place to any of my friends and already have...lol Check it out and ENJOY!"

"The service there was mediocre to poor and this was from multiple people, so I see it as a management problem. The host seemed stress out and confused while we waited for our table. He made it seem like he was busier than what they really were. There was only 3 couples waiting for a table and he forgot about us and had to ask us a few times what our name were again and again. He had a computer right there with our reservation on it! Once we were seated, it took the server exactly 25 min, to get our drinks (a beer and a cocktail.) We ordered an appetizer that the server wrote down, but never entered into the system. As our drinks arrived, our entrees came shortly thereafter."

"Avenues Bistro has a nice menu. Highly recommend the Ceviche and the Braised Shortrib Strogganoff. A nice bonus was that they carried Red Breast Irish Whiskey. Had a reservation and still had to wait 30min. Our server was excellent, but food was VERY slow - 45 min dinner took almost 2hrs. Willing to give them another shot on just an off night because the food was very good."

"We always dine there for early dinner, this past Sunday was the first time we try Brunch and no disappointment. Everything was excellent. price is great. Service was really nice . Is not a huge Brunch but so selective and eggs are made to order, Omelett, Eggs Benedict, French Toast, Waffles and Eggs any way. We will go back. I recommend this for or any time Brunch"

"We sat down at 5pm...so well before what I would think would be a busy dinner rush for the kitchen staff. It was a mostly full restaurant, but not what I would think a busy weekend night would be. Our server didn't get our drink orders for 15 minutes and we didn't get to order food until 10 min after that, even though we were ready! It took 40 MIN to get our food!!! I'm sorry, but that is unacceptable, and it seemed that people who came before us and just after us were running into the same issue. By the time we ordered my birthday dessert I had to leave, so the others at my table got to enjoy it! No one ever came to the table and our server never said a word about it taking so long. Seemed like it was the norm."

"This was my second dining at Avenues. I had hoped reading reviews that my first time was an anomaly. I am surprised this has not been mentioned in other reviews of there beef dishes. Hopefully someday the "chef" will realize that there are ways and herbs to season beef that don't involve massive amounts of SALT . My wife had there "best seller" lobster pasta which tasting I found very bland. Service very good but too many restaurants out there to go back to this one"

"While Avenues used to be my once to twice a month restaurant, it has been over a year stuck in Leavenworth since was last here. Peter, Giovanni, and Tim are still making it feel like home. My friend had a delicious meal, as did I. Glad to hear Joe was back there in the kitchen working hard. Next time, I will not take that long to return."

"Superb. I took a couple of friends who'd never been to Avenues Bistro, and after having drinks at the bar while we waited for our table, we were seated and ordered from the small plates menu. Two of us were celebrating birthdays, and the third happened to mention it to the waitress, who brought out our desserts with candles atop them. What a great touch!!!"
