James Beard Award Winning Chef Michael Smith's latest culinary creation is Extra Virgin, located in Kansas City's historic Crossroad's Art's District. Open to rave reviews in December 2008, Extra Virgin serves Mediterranean Tapas and has an extensive wine list and full cocktail menu. We offer patio dining for 50 people & private dining for 30 people.
"Was highly recommended. Food was good, not great--partly due my preferences . Service could have been better. They were busy. Like to go back and try M Smith."

"This is our new favorite. Extra Virgin has been around for a while but we only think about it on Final Friday when there tend to be huge crowds. Friday afternoon my husband and I enjoyed dining on the patio. At first the music seemed a little loud but as soon as we got our drinks and first appetizer we no longer noticed. Hubby's favorite - the list of appetizers listed as "adventerous" octopus fetttuchini, duck tongue tacos, etc. I enjoyed the tuna ceviche tacos and stuffed eggplant. We also shared some spanish meatballs, delish. We haven't sampled the spec yet, but I am sure my husband will have some on a future trip. Sitting on the patio on a Friday afternoon at Extra Virgin felt a lot like being back in Europe."

"Extra Virgin is a great find provided you don't mind the noise. Like so many eating establishments these days, the "less is more" approach definitely applies to any sound-deadening material (e.g. carpet, acoustical tile). The outdoor tables may actually be more conducive to conversation. That said, the staff was very accommodating in moving us to a somewhat quieter corner and the culinary experience was excellent. A wide variety of tapas-like selections are available at half-price before happy hour ends at 6 pm, along with discounted drinks. So the two of us were able to enjoy a tasty sampling and two drinks apiece for around $60 and make a meal of it. Good stuff, but if you're sensitive to sound, bring the earplugs…"

"this has to be one of our absolute favorite spots. i was saving a gift card from my sis i'd received last summer for my birthday so we could sit outside. finally, after a snowy spring, the day arrived. bundled because it remained crisp, we enjoyed outdoor dining for a sumtuous meal. tried some new small plates and thoroughly enjoyed. must return soon."

"We loved out first visit so much we came back 6 days later. We had another show to catch at the Kauffman Center, and decided to have dinner at Extra Virgin.
Reservations a must on a Friday night. Without one, you will need to content yourself with a spot at the bar - which was hopping. We tried a few more menu items: beef heart and gizzard skewer (not dainty little skewers, but two good-sized ones), mussels (the sauced was too good not to mop up with the grilled garlic bread served along with them), scallops, crispy pig ear salad, and humus. All items did not disappoint.
We also still had room to split a dessert: the strawberry crostada, served with house-made basil ice cream. Winning combination!
Service is attentive, but not intrusive."

"I was in the mood for tapas/small plates, and Extra Virgin fits the bill.
We tried the duck tongue tacos (four in a serving, served with lime wedge). They were very tasty. Also tried the beef tongue and snails ravioli. Delightful, served with a wine-mushroom sauce.
Empanadas were good, but not our favorite of the dishes we ordered. Stuffed baby eggplants are also a wonderful addition to our selection that evening.
We tried the Turkish baklava, since I was not in the mood for a heavy finish to our meal. Delicate, and not too sweet.
We will be back."

"Great Happy Hour choices. Wonderfully unusual selections. Small plates so you can share and try several things. Loved everything especially the duck tongue tacos. A little loud, but very enjoyable."

"On many of my trips to Kansas City, a goal is to dine at Extra Virgin. The menu is broad and each plate or entree from every category is excellent. The wine list is broad and contains many reasonably priced selections where anyone can find a nice bottle they'll enjoy in the $50-70 range that will complement a diverse and leisurely tapas meal. Servers have always been A+ in terms of attentiveness and are knowledgeable about menu and fairly knowledgeable about wines-but are skilled enough to say "I don't know.." and find someone who can help you if you wish. The ambience is nice, very active, and promotes a relaxing and enjoyable dining experience every time."

"ExtraVirgin has been one of my favorite restaurants for a few years now. I take all my out of town visitors there; the food is great, never too crowded to enjoy. I have never had a bad meal there and I think the "small plates" are perfect to try new things and share with others."

"One of the better restaurants I tried while visiting KC on business. I found the seating a bit cramped but if you're going for a lively vibe, you won't care. Food is inventive and tasty - which is most important! Our server was super nice."

"What a great place to try a lot of food choices and ingredients while sipping on inventive cocktails. My wife loved mine (Hot Mess) so much that she set her order aside and ordered another Hot Mess to sip on during our meal... knowing we'd be able finish her original cocktail for dessert;]
The small plates menu was eclectic and showcased different options for fare ie - hot, cold, adventurous, salad and so on. So much to choose from, you just have to stake a claim here and there on the epicurian landscape and let food do the rest.
Service was effective and attentive (if maybe a little too soft-spoken... my wife and I had a hard time hearing/understanding our waiter sometimes).
Definitely a worth a return visit."

"We have been to Extra Virgin many times. This was the worst experience ever. We had some complaints: not getting all the food we ordered, then being charged for it; slow, slow service, and having to ask more than once for the smokers to not be right by us, but the required feet from the building, didn't have the wine we wanted and made us wait 30 minutes to tell us. The manager gave us excuses, then thought taking the server's gratuity away from him! Way to back up your employee. She should have done what other nice restaurants would have done: brought a gift card to the table, say I'm sorry this was not a positive experience, please come back again. Instead, she made us feel uncomfortable. Never going back again."

"Was excited to try this place out. Excitement dimmed when we had to finally ask the hostess for some service. That request was met with an attitude by our server. After another few minutes we went to the bar to order our drinks. Not a good start. Chips and devil ed eggs were ok. Meatballs were buffet worthy , ceviche tacos in hard shell were a miss, and the empanadas were fried ...too long, and were hard. Wine was good though, as was the company."

"It was great until Open Table cancelled my reservation 20 minutes AFTER I already dined there. Then Open Table on their website tells you to call a busy restaurant to work out the issue. Way to own up to your mistake OT."

"I forgot how EXCELLENT the food is here. We opted for the hanger steak, brussell sprouts, fig chicken legs, and the mac and cheese. The wait staff is attentive and cool as is the venue. KC is lucky to have EV!"

"Great food if you're in the moody for something fancy/adventurous (I'm a meet-and-potatoes type but still thoroughly enjoyed the meal). We ordered the tuna ceviche tacos (5/5 stars - shell was too brittle but taste was amazing), the Spanish meatballs (4/5 stars), the tostones (3/5 stars - too much oil), and the hummus (5/5 stars - fantastic!). For desert we had the crostada and vanilla ice cream (5/5 stars) and the churros (3/5 stars - churros were great but desert was meh overall).
Top notch wine list; although $30 corking fee for BYOB is high IMO. Cocktails were unusual and fun - I let the server pick one out for me, and he made a great choice.
Place is pretty small, but there is a patio for warmer times. Will definitely go ba"

"We ordered the tuna ceviche tacos and duck tongue tacos. Both were mediocre. The tuna tacos were essentially small chunks of tuna and guacamole. The duck tacos were interesting but not memorable. Both had overpowering crunchy shells and might have been tastier in soft corn tortillas. The cocktails also sounded more interesting on the menu than they actually tasted. Our server was not around much. We sat in the bar area which was upbeat, but strangly decorated. The dining room did look more elegant. I might be pursuaded to try Extra Virgin again in the summer when the outside patio is open and the menu has changed. Otherwise, I can't see myself eating here again."

"A very interesting menu from safe to daring selections. The wine list was extensive and the feel was trendy. The only drawback was the noise level. The restaurant has A lot of flat, hard surfaces that do not absorb sound making it difficult to converse."

"We just returned from a weekend in Las Vegas where we ate at some fantastic restaurants. Extra Virgin could hold its own in Vegas or any other city for that matter. You have to have an adventurous palate to fully appreciate the menu but just about everything we have ever tried is delicious. In our opinion, they have the best happy hour in the city."
