Opened in 1979 by world famous restaurateur Michael Chow. MR CHOW started in London in 1968 and continues to enjoy generations of devoted clients from art, fashion, music, and entertainment. Recently awarded the 5 Star Diamond Award by the American Academy of Hospitality Sciences for its excellence, service, and cuisine this restaurant described by Givenchy as a "Precious Jewel Box" is one of the most beautiful restaurants in New York City serving high Chinese Cuisine with impeccable service.
The menu at MR CHOW is a combination of old authentic Beijing, Original Recipes, and the signature dishes such as Chicken Satay, MR CHOW Noodles, and Ma Mignon. MR CHOW also serves one of the best Beijing Ducks in the world.

"The food was overly priced and the portions were tiny. They say it is family style and the plates are not even tapas size. When we got there they asked if we wanted sparkling or flat water. I said flat thinking they'd give us just iced water, nope they bring out a bottle of Fiji and opened it before I could say no. The wait staff was obnoxious and we had about 10 different waiters throughout the evening. I do not reccomend this restaurant!"

"Mr. Chow's is for those who love great chinese where price is not your primary Consideration. This is a great restaurant for people who appreciate great food and an energetic scene For special occasion I think it's perfect. The Peking duck is excellent, stuff crowd is moist and plentiful, and Sea Bass was perfect. Despite the price, I actually think it's a great value. You always have food to take back with you. Go Mr. Chow!"

"I absolutely despised the waiters standing a feet away while I'm dining. It was uncomfortable to eat with them standing in a single file line staring while I'm eating. I won't return due to this. No one likes to be hovered or stared while they are eating.
My only compliment was the bartenders Bloody Mary."

"While the food is really tasty, it was the worst service I have ever received. The Captain basically has a huge ego and had no clue how much he insulted his customers. From continuously recommending the pre fix (which we did not want), to essentially forcing us into it.. he also thought it important to let us know that "we are a fine dining restaurant and this is how it is" to "if you dont want to or cannot afford fine dining, you dont have to eat here". He also refused to listen to his customers and it was an overall disaster. Here is how bad it was... I have never left a tip of less than 18% in 30 years. I left $0 this time.
A real pity though as the food is excellent.."

"I'm a Canadian visitor and would never ever recommend Mr. Chow on 57th street to anyone. Last year I went to the Mr. Chow in Soho and it was fabulous!! Came back to NYC with my sister and her husband, we decided to go to Mr. Chow uptown since we were staying at a hotel closer to it an were sadly disappointed and very embarrassed to have out them through such an experience. Nothing about our experience was good...besides the very pleasant servers who filled our glasses and cleared our plates. Food was tasteless and dry, portions were horrendous and way over priced. I will surely go back to Mr. Chow Soho, just because it was a great experience but 57th street will never happen for me again... Don't go if you have choice...8 THUMBS DOWN!!"

"I requested a private table where a conversation can be had... (I hate in-line seating) and lo and behold we got exactly what we asked for. My friend has known the restaurant for 30 years so he was ready to order without a menu and he did not disappoint: the drunken fish and velvet chicken were amazing! He also ordered some appetizers among which the crispy seaweed was my favorite. The service was excellent and attentive. I will definitely return soon."

"I had been to the Mr Chow in TriBeCa and the UES location is a completely different scene and IMO not as nice. Food was more than great and made up for the other oddities. Waiters kep pushing the prix fixe menu and wouldn't recommend dishes off ala carte. They also wouldn't bring a cocktail or wine list. So only go if you are open to someone choosing for you and you are not on a limited budget."

"Not what I was expecting, first Chinese restaurant I've ever been to where there was not a chopstick in sight. The place was packed, it felt to me that they had squeezed a few too many tables in and I could hear my neighbour's voices more clearly than I could my guest sitting across from me. The food was good but expensive for what it was. I won't be hurrying back."

"What a disappointment! I had been there 10 years ago and had a nice time & meal. Went back with my boyfriend this past week while in NY. The service was "slick" as the waiters attempted to bump up the tab by offering only bottled or sparkling water and then trying to get guests to order prix fixe menu options instead of just ordering off the menu. Our order was incorrect and the waiter scoffed at us for sending back the crispy duck presented for what we had ordered. The replacement didn't come until we were almost finished with our meal. For $200 I can think of many other restaurants I would have rather visited. The ambience didn't match the prices -- sloppy customers with cell phones out and baseball caps and saggy jeans on!"

"Mr. Chow is a famous restaurant so I was expecting a fantastic meal. Possibly, due to my high expectations it fell short. The service was good but when I asked for a wine list the waiter brought me out a glass of wine instead, leaving me with out the option to choose my own wine and the price range. It was a house wine, so it was not expensive, thankfully. I did enjoy my dinner but my appetizer was less than desirable. My husband did not like his. I am still glad we gave a chance, but I do not think we would return on our next visit to New York."

"The ambiance it's funny, looks like you are at the 80's. But it's fine. The food is very good. The chicken satay is amazing, but need more cheese sauce. The duck, the shrimp and the lettuce entrance were very good. Wine was alright.
We've made a resevation for 10 pm, but we were the last ones, the music stopped for a moment... I recommend to make last reservation at 9pm."

"We have been visiting Mr Chow with great pleasure over a period of 15 years..Now it is very noisy,crowded and due to the menü when you order a package you get too much food that is wasted and the premise got old and tired.

"Once again, the 3rd time I have been there,...excellent food and service. We were a party of 8 ladies (4 of whom were 13-18), and ALL of whom were treated like royalty. It made the younger girls appreciate fine dining!"

"This was as much an experience as it was a dinner of dishes that we had never tried before. The atmosphere was very lively. It was also the most expensive Chinese food ever. A word of caution concerning the menus. The menu posted on Mr Chows website and the one presented is vastly different in offerings (restaurant menu much broader) and is vastly different in price (restaurant menu 50% higher in price for fixe price). There were many diners who "allowed" the host to "create" a menu for them based on their own tastes and preferences only to be horrified when they saw their bill.
The green prawns, lobster vermicelli , ma mignon and sorbets desserts were so delicious we plan to make them at home ourselves."

"Awesome food, highly recommend the glazed shrimp with walnuts and the Ma Mingon, both beautiful dishes. A little disappointed with the chicken satay, as it was highly recommended I guess we expected better of it, however the other food made up for it. Simply amazing! In the higher price range, but if you are looking for a high-end dinning experience then this is a good choice! Thank you Mr Chow for a wonderful evening!"

"My husband and I had our wedding reception here in the lower level in the private room. The food, drinks and service was GREAT!! So every year for our anniversary or a special occasion like Valentine day we come here.
I rated the service fair this time because the hostess when you first walk in was very unprofessional and even though my husband and I had reservations she made us wait close to 30 minutes to be seated and had other couples after us coming in seated before us and I had to bring it to the managers attention. After that he sat us in the best spot in the restaurant. As ALWAYS the waiters are PERFECT, nice and keep you smiling so despite the hostess my husband and I will continue to dine at Mr. Chow and refer anyone!!!"
