Urban Tavern is a fun exciting Gastropub in Downtown's Union Square. Our philosophy is to provide comforting & fun, tavern-style food, using only the most pristine, local, and whenever possible organic and sustainable ingredients. Most of these items are made in house or sourced from within 200 miles of the restaurant. Urban Tavern takes advantage of our local bounty not only for our cuisine but also in our bar, from our exclusive domestic wine list to our highly acclaimed beer selection. Fusing modern and classic technique with California sensibilities in a playfully fun manner, Urban Tavern has become the restaurant for Eating-Meeting-Drinking.
"Although in an odd location, Urban Tavern holds a candle to notable mission "local" restaurants like locavore and locanda.
They run an incredible number of deals (1000 pt table, restaurant.com), and I was concerned that the food would be subpar as a result. What appears to be the case is that a fantastic hotel restaurant simply struggles to get people to give it a shot.
All of the dishes we had were delicious, whiskey pork shoulder, veggie chop, and the fish pot pie. I would recommend any; we saw another table order the pretzels, which from their looks+smell, are worth a try as well."

"Urban tavern was a pleasant surprise. Located at the hilton, you might be initially turned off by the "hotel restaurant" status, but Urban Tavern more than holds its own with San Francisco "foodie" restaurants. A focus on local ingredients, the food is both fresh and well put together. We had the Veggie chop salad and whiskey pork shoulder, the former was deliciously fresh and the latter exploding with flavor.
It's a bit out of the way, but you can park at the hotel for free if you dine there. The staff are very gregarious and happy to recommend dishes. Certainly worth the trip!!"

"We went to Urban Tavern for our Girls Day out, moms and daughters, and then went to the theater. Amazing how they can take the most basic food and make it so good. I had the grilled cheese, which comes with high-quality bacon, pepperocini and arugula, it was great. Desserts were fantastic. Very hip ambiance."

"Risotto and French onion soup were very tasty. Small portions though. Small plate tacos were also tiny, even after upgrading from 2 to 3. Tiramisu was nicely presented, but the molasses chunks made it odd. Disappointed with wine list. It was more expensive than it needed to be. The cheapest bottle of red doesn't have to be $48 in a place like this. (I think there was a rose for $40.) On the plus side, service was attentive. If you do go, waiter told us they validate parking for 5 hours, so good for theater."

"We have been there in the past and been very happy with the food and serbvice. Not so this time. We were seated at 7pm and didn't order until almost 7:45pm. We didn't receive our food until after 8:45pm and finally didin't get out of the restaurant until almost 10pm. Not sure what the problem was in the kitchen but whatever it was affected the food and the service."

"The guys raved over their steak and pork dishes. LOVED the 14 layer chocolate cake with marscapone and chocolate ganache. The kitchen was quick! We wanted to make sure that we had plenty of time to get to the Curran and our party of four had dinner, dessert, and coffee easily within an hour be being seated."

"Very limited lunch menu, virtually NOTHING healthy on limited menu. No creativity at all. Had to ask for everything - water, tea. Was never served any bread. On top of that lunch for 2 people was $60!!!! Skip it. This is a busy hotel restaurant. I'll never be back."

"Food was okay. I had roast chicken, which tasted like cafeteria chicken; mashed potatoes were dry on top (maybe too long under a heat lamp) but moist and tasty underneath. Good location. The front of the dining room is quite noisy, less so as you go back."

"Convenient. Loved the free 5 hour parking. Convenient to the Curran. Food was average. Service good, especially considering they were super busy with a group that had left a conference."

"The service was terrible. The bus boy that brought us our water was a better server than our actually server. The food was alright, but very overpriced. I ordered the Duck Ramen. I could have gone down the street to Turtle Tower and getting better food for a third of the price. At one point the turned the lights almost entirely off. I was at a two person table with my fiance and I couldn't even see her."

"The food was decent, I was expecting better for the price, but I guess it's in the middle of tourist central. I don't see myself choosing to come back again, as there's a good number of places in the area for similar quality food at a much cheaper price."

"noise level was unsettling. conversation very difficult. the food was okay, but meat was served in metal pans, so it continued to cook after arriving at the table. using very hot metal pans is not a very thoughtful idea and needs to be abandon..."

"Heard about Urban Tavern from a foodie friend. My father and I went for lunch before the theater. We were very pleased. The menu was very interesting and what we ordered was very good...we even had dessert which is very unusual for us to do. My father is somewhat hard of hearing and although the resturant was fairly empty the room echoed. The decor is very attractive. Give it a try!"

"Our initial impression was a bit weird-the server we encountered as we entered through the hotel and could not find the hostess stand-was a bit rude, the host seemed overwhelmed and distracted. We had a change of servers mid meal due to his break. We also had an issue trying to use a living social voucher which we ended up not using. Over all the food was good not great. but, the service and ambiance feel almost on par with a Denny's fast food chain. Seems like it might be the watering hole for a busy touristy hotel."

"The appetizers were good....had a limited time due to theater reservations...the mussels and the kale caesar salad were very good. It was difficult to get the attention of the waitstaff, including just to get menus, place an order and get bill."

"Went here with a friend after going to a show on O'Farrell. Not going to lie - we judged the book by the cover: I was intrigued by the design/decor and the menu read really well. Unfortunately the food didn't live up to its description. Everything was fine but completely uninspired.
Ultimately, Urban Tavern is better than a lot of those tourist diners near Union Square, but there are so many terrific restaurants in SF that I wouldn't spend time coming here."

"Location is great and our waitress was wonderful. The service was excellent and when we told her we had to leave for the ballet, she expedited everything. We had a dining coupon that they honored with no problem. We had Fish & Chips (Excellent), French Onion Soup (very, very good), Garden Salad with pumpkin seeds (sparse) with a green goddess dressing that had an unpleasant anise under taste, Arugula salad (very good), vegetarian beans and polenta dish (not good), and Beeramisu, a vanilla pudding concoction with cinnamon/brown sugar lumps (not good). Somewhat pricey ~ (1) fish & chips, (1) vegetarian bean dish, (2) French Onion soups, (2) salads, (2) Stella beers, (2) Beeramisu desserts ~ $140 plus $20 tip = $160 total. Overall~ Very Good."

"Hot spot in San Francisco did not disappoint. Service was excellent and food was incredible. Smoked turkey leg while sounding boring came recommended and our server was spot on with that recommendation. Great fish selection too! Highly recommended"

"Some co-workers and I were going to the theatre and chose the restaurant due to it's proximity to the theater and the fact that they offer 5 hrs of validated parking! We really enjoyed our meals and the vibe was good. We all work in the restaurant industry so we can be very critcal, but we found nothing to criticize! I plan to take my husband back at a later date!"

"It is a little hard to know how to review this restaurant because we were there during the Super Bowl. Of course it was noisy and there were a lot of people. I ordered a spinach salad and asked for the cherry vinaigrette instead of the bacon dressing. I am sure it was bacon but the server said she asked the chef and it was the cherry. Mmmm, no. The spinach was a little sandy. The peel 'n' eat shrimp was good, and my husband's meal (burger and fries) was good, we had tator tots and they were good and the sauces were good. I would probably try it again and order something different. We made a note of it because they had "snacks" on the menu - a good thing to remember when you don't want a full meal."

"The food was very tasty, we liked the small plates idea. The menu, while not extensive, was fine for what we wanted. It's location made it very convenient as we went to an ACT play after eating. The waitress was very good, efficient and friendly. As it turns out, we should have parked in the Hilton garage as they comp 5 hours of parking when you buy a meal. The only downside, it that the dishes are more expensive than comparable dishes in other restaurants. For example, $22 for fish and chips and $8 for a soup (not in a large bowl) - $2 more if you a a bit of chicken. But the convenience and parking perk will probably encourage us to return when we go to ACT."

"Delicious, delicious, delicious! My only complaint is that they were out of the Venison Tartare, but the good news is now we have to go back to try it. My parents had read reviews before coming that weren't very good, and they couldn't believe anyone would write a bad review after having had our meal. The ambiance was great, the service impeccable, and every single dish ordered was divine! We will absolutely be back, and we will recommend to our friends as well! Keep on rockin' Urban Tavern!"

"If a meal out is supposed to be about having a good experience as well as having a good meal, the Urban Tavern is a good bet. Service was good and attentive, welcome was pleasant, the ambiance was bustling, friendly-feeling and somewhat chic, and the food was special and well-prepared. Urban Tavern is going out of its way to attract the theater-going crowd with free 5 hours of parking in the associated hotel parking garage and a special menu on request for timely service."
