"Surprised restaurant was crowded [a good sign] but it was also very noisy. Their bread is, of course, so wonderful and comes to the table hot. Dishes we had were all very good - carpaccio, beet salad [though a bit overdressed], salmon [we asked for medium rare but it came out medium, it wasn't dry but it wasn't as moist as we wanted], seafood risotto [regional dish] was to die for! [would order again!], and my husband loved his seafood mix grill [another regional special]. The chocolate almond cake dessert with salted caramel ice cream was to die for. I like my coffee really hot. It was just nearly hot. Service was very good. Will definitely come back for a special occasion."

"We had a very poor server--had to ask for water several times, more bread, drinks, etc. This has never happened before and we have eaten at this Il Fornaio many times. That is why I put that I would recommend Il Fornaio to others. The food was good, but not great, again this is unusual. I had the same soup there three days before and on this visit it was so waterly and flavorless, that my son said they must have run out and had to thin it with chicken broth. Again, because this was so unusual, we would go again. The other thing that was very out of character, is that the manager did not come by our table. When we left he was sitting at a table with another server just talking and laughing--seemingly unconcerned with patrons, etc."

"My son met me there for a Mother's Day dinner. It was very delicious and a great choice for a special day. Waiter wasn't the best. Wine list is really over the top as far as expensive. We both wanted a glass of "house" cabernet. The waiter claimed they did not have any "house' wine, which we found unusual. We arrived half hour early due to my son's flight coming in early at SFO. The restaurant was very cordial and seated us as soon as possible."

"I'm not sure why I keep going back to Il Fornaio, because the same thing happens every time we dine there: we get seated and then proceed to wait 10-12 minutes before finally having to flag down a waiter--who then says he's not the waiter for our table but will send ours over. We then wait another 10 minutes til the actual waiter comes and by that time our young kids are fussing and we are kicking ourselves for thinking the level of service would ever change at Il Fornaio. Which is too bad, since the food is quite good, prices are reasonable etc. And there always seem to be a zillion people in white coats running around--just few actual waiters. Anyway, we believe we've finally learned our lesson this time and won't return there again."

"It seemed like there were plenty of waiters but no one helped each other, certainly not ours. Our table was not ready until almost a half hour after our reservation. It took a long time to order. Not all the drinks or plates came at the same time. All in all, good food, bad service."

"The braised short ribs had an excellent flavor, but the beef was slightly dry and the sauce would probably benefit from less bay leaf. The Pennoni alla Vodka was perfect. The Moscato d'Asti was a very balanced sweet wine that seemed to complement everything. The Crespelle di Mele is a light, tasty desert that has a wonderful variety of flavors and is light enough to top off even the most filling meal."

"Il Fornaio made a late lunch for a party of 8 seem easy. The selections were broad enough to meet everyone's needs and wants. Nothing was so special that it stood out, but my experience is that big groups present challenges for restaurants and we never experienced even a hiccup. All the food was presented timely, and hot meals were served hot and cold salads served cold.
The waitperson picked out an assortment of cookies from the front counter for our dessert. That's a very nice finish to the meal and made the coffee/tea that much better."

"I usually like this restaurant for lunch but I didn't particularly like the food I selected off the menu this time. I took a friend and her lunch was about $27.00 for the entree. I wish they would just print a lunch menu to choose from. That would sure make it easier when you take someone for lunch. They did have a few items and a single page insert but I find all the Italian confusing. The menu is very pretty though.

"i've been there for dinner before and it was serviceable. Took my family there for lunch--omg, won't go back. The Calamari fritti was overcooked and dried out (like they made it a couple of days before) My caesar salad was wilty and kind of dead. The chicken on it was tasteless. They forgot to grill my nephew's grilled cheese sandwich. The service was very slow. The pizzas were good. I complained to the manager on the way out (after getting zero response from the waitress). He didn't seem to care either."

"Wow...what a pleasant surprise...we had not been to Il Fornaio in months and we were pleasantly surprised...the inventive menu provided us with several good but light choices...the only minus was their "special" wines...one my wife ordered was undrinkable...at $9 / glass...please! ...and the hostess seemed overwhelmed by the "challenge" of getting patrons seated...these comments aside, we had an excellent meal!"

"This was a work function lunch that we decide to have at Il Fornaio. The food and the service was good which I would expect, but I definitely thought that the service could have been better. The server seemed nice enough but he didn't interact with us much. We concluded that perhaps he was fairly new to this job. Again, nothing was bad or terrible, just certain elements could have been better which would have enhanced our lunch experience."

to need work. I ordered a special Prawn and Rock Shrimp Risotto that
arrived with a single (large) prawn and two small rock shrimp. Kind
of pitiful quantities of seafood, I sent it back. Instead I ordered a pasta dish
with broccoli, chicken, and sundried tomatoes that was just uninspired
and mediocre. My wife ordered cannelloni that were also not very exciting.
Generally I find the cheaper items on the menu are the best -- the pizzas
