Scarlet Oak Tavern
We are located on Hingham's historic Main Street in a 250-year old colonial house that has been thoroughly restored and updated by the award-winning Niemitz Design Group. Our cuisine, led by Executive Chef Stephen Sherman, centers around great steaks and the freshest seafood, although we also offer contemporary versions of classic American comfort food. Our philosophy is that good service is never intimidating service; and that honest, freshly-prepared food can often be more of a luxury than something you can't pronounce.

"My husband and i brought our 88 and 89 year old moms to the Oak for a Mother's Day lunch. My mom, who is a picky eater had her salmon without the chili rub that was offered on the menu. She said it was the moistest and most tasteful salmon she has ever had. We were all very pleased with our meals and dessert was just as tasty! The waitress was fabulous, friendly and very attentive."

"The food is pretty good for tavern style. The staff was polite and friendly. However, in their drive to be efficient they lost the connection to dining experience. Our salads and appetizer came together. Wine, although requested with entree, came before cocktails were done. Main course came while still eating our salads. Good place but you may feel rushed if all service follows this course."

"This was my first visit to Scarlet Oak. Varied, appealing menu. A lunch meeting with 3 guests, my tuna salad was excellent. My companion reported that the chowder topped with fish was a favorite (she had been here numerous times). The restaurant ambiance was very nice, comfortable and not too loud for discussion. Waitress did not rush us but was attentive. I will return."

"I booked online and put a special request in for a birthday cake or desert. I didn't mention it to our server when we arrived but after dinner she brought a delicious chocalate cake with a candle. I was very impressed and the service was exceptional. Also the dinner was very good.

"We went on a Thursday night for dinner with our son, it was busy but mostly at the bar. We were seated promptly and given enough time to settle when the server came over to ask about drinks. We were given some bread and also corn bread which seemed like it was made on the premises. The clam chowder was great and the goat cheese appetizer went over well with the guys. Our dinner entrees were served all together and were very tasty, one in our group wasn't to pleased with the sweet potato and brussel hash."

"Dined with four people by reservation (of course). Good thing too, who would have thought on a Tuesday night this place would be PACKED, but it was. Anyway, we sat and greeted by our waitress, who promptly poured our water's and disappeared before taking a drink order. She came back and took and order for oysters. I mentioned I was looking for a bottle, and all she did was point out that their list was organized lightest to fullest... no recommendations or pairings here I guess. Anyway, the food was fantastic, I had the pork, my fiance had the chicken pot pie. I would have either again tonight! Our server finally did become a bit more attentive once we ordered our second bottle and then cognac. Don't order the S'mores."

"Maybe Easter Sunday was a bad day to go. My filet mignon was dry and overcooked. I jhad to as for bernaise sauce to get it down. Everyone else in my party enjoyed their meals, 2 lamb, 1 pork dinner, but no one raved. Service was good, but overall I thought it was overpriced."

"My wife and I went for Easter Brunch. The waitress was wonderful and the overall experience was very nice. However, I was surprised by the limited brunch menu. The special French Toast I had was excellent, but there were no "typical" breakfast items, like bacon. Our waitress assured us that the usual brunch was much more varied."

"Sadly, Easter brunch was a little disappointing, we had hoped for a couple of appropriate special dishes, maybe something featuring ham? The french toast was dry and over cooked, not a good value. Service was the only redeeming feature, fast and friendly. I think they could have made an effort with quality and a little more variety on a special day? "Have been here many times and always left very pleased. Two our of four of us left satisfied this time. My husband ordered a risotto dish with lobster, an entree item, and it came sized as an appetizer for $28. He ended up eating a lot of bread to stave off his hunger. The other spouse ordered the strip steak to be done medium rare and it came medium, at best, also $28.
The food itself was very good but with two in our party not too happy with their entrees, I don't know that we would rush back. there are many very good restaurants in our town and at these prices I would probably go back to those places next time over Scarlett Oak."

"We really wanted to like this place, but the Scarlet Oak Tavern just didn't measure up. None of our meals were all that tasty- generally under seasoned and bland. The pizza was severely overcooked to the point of half of it was inedible. There were some nice looking specials, but our server didn't mention them to us.
The place is very family friendly and they were accomodating to our kids which goes a long way. Too bad the kids weren't crazy about their meals either."

"Although our server Jessica was absolutely fantastic, I found the ambiance less than I expected (especially for the prices)and the noise level was to the point of making conversation difficult. The food was a mix of really good and really bad. The sirloin, salmon and lobster were great. Unfortunately, the side dishes were not. The macaroni & cheese dish was totally tasteless and was returned (our server exchanged that for garlic mashed potatos that were somewhat better). Overall, was not impressed and won't be returning."

"It's nice to be able to order from both the lounge and the dining room menu regardless of where one is seated. I had two of my favorites -- mussels, which were very tasty but a bit dry, and the beet salad, which was wonderful. "Service and ambiance was great, so were the cocktails - the food left me underwhelmed. My fiancé and I shared an appetizer (the crab cocktail) - that was pretty good, with a nice cilantro sauce. Our main dishes were a bit disappointing, though. We both ordered steak, and when the plates came out, it looked like something I cooked at home. I'm not a superficial kind of girl, but I think presentation is part of the restaurant experience. The plating was poor. The steaks were both on the dry side. Disappointing since my fiancé and I were excited about having a nice steak that night. It wouldn't take a lot for them to turn this B-minus around, but as is, not worth the $150+ bill."

"My husband and I had a 8:30 pm reservation on Valentine's Day. They called a day early to confirm our reservation, which was nice. It was busy that night, but they had a table ready for us downstair within a few minutes of arrival. The place was romantic and cozy, and the wait staff was great, although not much privacy as you can hear every conversation from the next table. Food was good, but not great enough for the price they charged. At then end of our meal we got a little box tie with red ribbon of homemade chocolates, which was a nice surprise.
Would I go back for the ambiance and service, the answer is yes. Would I go back for the beef with a price tag of $28 that tasted like a typical restaurant that charged $18, the answer is no"

"We enjoyed our February 14 experience at Scarlet Oak Tavern, Hingham. We had been at that spot many times when the restaurant went through its many changed hands. The food was exceptional and hit many flavor notes we found appealing. Next visit will be with our family.

"My husband and I, once again, were not disappointed with Scarlet Oak. We usually sit at the bar and order from the tavern menu but decided for Valentine's Day to eat in the dining room. When we got there we did not have to wait for our table and were immediately greeted by our server. The service was very good and the food was excellent. My only downside to the night was that a table seated near us had two small children, one who was loud and whiney and ruined the romantic atmosphere for us (that is no fault of the restaurants though). The evening ended with our server giving us a box with two homemade chocolate truffles that we enjoyed at home. Can't wait to go back for another filet mignon sometime soon!"

"I originally made a reservation for 2 for Valentine's Day. When the restaurant called to confirm it the day before I asked if I could bring a third person and was told that they were booked and could not change the party size to 3. When we arrived they sat us at a table for 4. I have been going to this restaurant for years and booking events with them. I am very disappointed that they did not allow the third person and then sat us at a table for 4. Whom ever handles the reservations should be more accomodating. They lost business on a night that turned out not to be very busy for the restaurant."
