A cozy and casual cafe overlooking bustling Tremont Street, in Boston's Historic South End. Offering our guests fine dining, hospitality and casual dining prices. We serve dinner nightly including a popular neighborhood brunch on both Saturday and Sunday.
"Metropolis is my neighborhood default zone. That may not sound like much, but for us, it is really important. We know that we can take out of town friends there when they want the South End experience, with good food and service all within a brief walk from our home. The menu never disappoints and the prices are reasonable. Without being pushy, Metropolis always holds its own among a field of ambitious restaurant offerings."

"Went to Metropolis for the first time this Saturday evening with another couple. The thing that attracted us to Metropolis was the exterior - reminded us of a small Parisian cafe! It is a small place, less than 15 tables, and felt intimate right away. We enjoyed the salads, fresh and simple but flavorful. Great bread with roasted garlic cloves and oil. Nice wine selection. We enjoyed the risotto and the steak specials, also got the "charred asparagus" and roasted Brussels sprouts for sides. Nice ambiance, lively enough but able to hold a conversation. We like the neighborhood, strolled around afterwards, and liked the casual feel but upscale food options. Service was fine but nothing special, no complaints. Would go again for sure."

"Everything about this place is wonderful. The atmosphere, the decor, the service and most of all the food was so very very good. Hard to make a choice since it all looked fresh and delicious. I was a bit under-the-weather so I chose the roasted chicken and it was the perfect choice, so good. My friend had the salmon (wow, beautiful), my husband had the rigatoni (remarkable). The mussels appetizer included some of the best, fat mussels I've ever eaten and I've lived here 25 years! Not a mediocre choice to be had. On top of that the staff is great AND the clientele around us were very friendly and eager to share thoughts on selections. This is a friendly and easy place to enjoy an excellent meal with anyone you care about. Just go."

"Once again The Metropolis Cafe is the perfect answer for dinner before the theater. Our entrees were quite delicious and everything worked out perfectly."

"Loved it.My second visit, my husband's first. For starters: fennel salad with smoked bacon, roquefort and parsley and a chopped salad with soppressata; the cod with gremolata (superb)for me, and the tagliatelle for him. The food was simply wonderful. The seating as requested. The place is cozy and appealing- maybe 15 tables and a generous bar where lots of folks were eating. Service: welcoming and professional. We will return soon: many more good things to eat!"

"The items we had were good - I had a fish stew which the kitchen handled well and my dinner partner had a swordfish special which he enjoyed. We ordered the onion tart as a appetizer -- unfortunately, the chef substituted heavy salting in lieu of a balanced taste. Management had not trained our waiter - he was distracted, absent-minded, and really, just a poor worker. I'd recommend the restaurant food-wise but don't go thinking you'll have a sophisticated dining experience."

"Just average food but good for light pre-theatre meal except for extremely slow service even though we told them we had the theatre. Entrees and salads did not come out on time for all diners and no one ever came back to check and see how everything was or ask if we wanted check or dessert or anything else."

"Went with two friends from out of town, and we all ordered off of the restaurant week menu. Three different dishes, three happy diners. If you want an intimate, down-to-earth dining experience in Boston, you can't do better than Metropolis."

"We had an excellent meal here recently. I had a superb gnocchi appetizer, very good duck breast, a great chocolate cheesecake, and a glass of wine, all from the Restaurant Week menu. My wife had an excellent soup and the tagliatelli from the regular menu. Prices are reasonable, especially for this quality of food. This is a small restaurant, and at busy times it could be crowded, since the bar and tables are close together, but it has a cozy feel to it."

"Small, intimate setting with outstanding, carefully-prepared food and a neighborhood feel to it. On a Sunday evening, several of the patrons seemed to be locals well-known to the staff. Good spot for eating at the bar, which has old-fashoned swiveling stools. Salmon in a tangy white sauce was light and buttery, the veal with a cauliflower-leek gratin was excellent. and the crispy chicken on mashed potatoes was rich and tasty. Hangar steak is on every menu; but this was a mouth-watering rendition at an affordable price. Creme brûlée with blueberries and the warm banana bread pudding with vanilla ice cream for dessert and both did not disappoint. Overall a fine dining experience in a casual, comfortable atmosphere."

"Dining at Metropolis is always a pleasure, whether you go with a group or just as a couple. The food is delicious and inventive, while the atmosphere is conducive to good dining. There are always other diners present and the place exudes a warmth and vitality without being loud or intrusive."

"Even though Metropolis Cafe is famous for the brunch, I think dinner is better than brunch. The place is tiny, but the ambiance is cozy and romantic and the food is outstanding! I've been to Metropolis several times and everything I had for dinner was great (I highly recommend ragu, veal and pork chop!) It is my one of the most favorite restaurants in Boston :) Love this place!!"

"Metropolis is an intimate spot which is why we went there to celebrate Sat of Valentine's Day weekend. Had reservations, Metropolis was full except for one other reserved table. From our window table, we could people watch and watch snow flurries turn to snow - got about 4" that night. The waiter was attentive w/o rushing us. Our meals were what we expected, well prepared ... very good. Our table was right by the door, but we felt no drafts because Metropolis has tiny enclosed foyer made of fabric - 3' x 4' and 8' tall installed for the winter."

"I've been to Metropolis before but was a bit disappointed in the food on this trip. I thought it was just okay.
Maybe it was what I ordered.....chopped salad, mushroom/onion tart, and the shrimp with romescu app. The tart was soggy. The romescu sauce on the shrimp was so garlicky, it overwhelmed the dish. I tasted it for days after. The crostini bread served with it was too big and a bit too crusty. None of us could eat it, fearing we'd break our teeth.
The rest of the people in our party were a bit underwhelmed as well. It won't stop me from going back.
On a positive note, the wines by the glass (Merlot, Rioja and the Zinfandel) were all exceptional!"

"This is a very small and romantic place. It's helpful to have reservations! We did, and we still had to wait for a little while on our table. The service is decent, but nothing outstanding. It was perfect for date night though. We were able to talk and enjoy each other's company without being interrupted constantly. The food was absolutely fantastic! The portions were a little on the small side for the prices, but definitely worth it. I would recommend driving or taking a cab. It's a pretty substantial walk from the T. However, if it's early in the evening and nice weather, it might be nice to take a walk with someone special."

"I took my girlfriend here for Valentine's Day. Couldn't ask for a cuter little bistro-esque restaurant. The staff was very friendly and the food selection was interesting and really tasty -- exactly what I was looking for, for the price and the reviews. I would highly recommend."

"Romantic, cozy and consistent. In a neighbourhood with pricey, precious, overhyped food that rarely delivers Metropolis always holds it own. While not "knock your socks off" food it is consistently good and satisfying. Service is outstanding. Ambiance is lovely. NO TV at the bar. be sure to ask for a booth."

"This is a small, cozy French-style bistro with friendly service and good food that is not ostentatious or esoteric. The space is small but not cramped, partly because the bar is used for seating diners, so there is no milling bar scene. A delightful gem in the South End."
