"Honestly, I can say only positive things about Japengo. The restaurant located very close to highway, but still facing the little quiet street. Service people were friendly and professional. Food was tasty. I also loved the decorations and our cozy booth. It's a bit pricey but really good choice for special occasions."

"the food is great. sushi is very fresh and not overpriced. the duck dish was great also. the fried rice was bountiful and delicious. the service was indeed slower; I think they just need more servers per tables, or the kitchen's slammed, or something. Anyway, I enjoyed this place."

"Server confusion - they didn't have the server responsibility areas defined well so at one point we had three different people asking to take our drink orders within a 3 minute time frame and later we sat with empty glasses for over 20 minutes before we could get someone to come over. Sushi was ok but have had much better elsewhere. Bass was too high, music wasn't that loud (although the playlist repeated three times while we were there) but you could feel the bass vibrations through the table."

"Coworker and I took a client to lunch. Good and location are great. Only issue was that our service was lacking. We sat outside for lunch and the bartender was both the bartender and our waiter which meant I had to walk back inside to get the refills we were promised 10 min later. But I will be back and just hope that this was a one off."

"the sushi was delicious, the the waitstaff was on point. my husband and I were there to celebrate our anniversary. Very casual and lots of kids (which made me think of my kids on my romantic anniversary dinner. the layout is a bit off, but after a drink the all the energetic noise went away. "Entire experience started off negatively. Hostess was not very friendly and did not welcome you to the restaurant. Permeated a bad attitude. She seemed put off by having to seat us. Ambiance is the best feature of the this restaurant with nice decor. Server was good but I'm not sure how responsibilities were divided between the server and busboy. Had to ask for a refill for coffee post dinner. When I asked for a refill the busboy looked at my cup as if to inspect it to see how much had been consumed. Dinner was good and had a sushi roll as an appetizer, but the fish did not seem that fresh. Roll tasted stale as if it had been pre-made or had been sitting out too long. Overall, this is a hip, chic restaurant with no wow factor."

"We had planned our trip around this dinner because of the rave review but our server was so rude. The food was really good, the service was bad. We felt he was so rushed he never stopped by to ask how our food was or if we needed anything. We actually had to flag down the busser and order things from him, we ended up tipping him because we felt he was more attentive.
Also, the original server was not able to tell us if the rolls we small or large. Thank god we ordered one each because they were large enough for one. We also asked how they compared to Station Sushi, a local sushi place down teh road, and he had no idea what it was. We expected more from the Hyatt, wish I would have gone to the other places next door."

"I have been a big fan of Cafe Japengo and their food for the last 10 years. But recently, things changed. I had friends and family visiting this past week and went there twice with two different small groups. The first time we sat at the sushi bar; the food was excellent but the service was terribly slow. The next time, the service was again slow and the food was poor quality. I've always felt that Japengos prided themselves in the high quality of their food and service. It has been the *only* place I go for sushi in the San Diego area because of quality so it's very disappointing to see that quality is no longer a priority. I may give them one more chance but if I have the same experience, I won't be going there in the future."

"Went for a girl's night out and our service and food was just okay. Definitely not worth the price. Plus if we hadn't looked at our bill closely we wouldn't have realized they overcharged us (in a big way) for one of our entrees - and the server was not very apologetic about it. I can't say I'll go back. I had way better service and food there over a year ago, so it seems like they are on the decline. I can't recommend it."

"I am a regular at Cafe Japengo. Though I almost always have sushi (thank you, Jerry!), sometimes at the sushi bar and sometimes at a table, the other food is great, too. Not the normal fare, but creatively prepared. At lunch I always have the Republic of Tea green tea with pomegranate. In the evening, drinks are generously proportioned.
This is a great place for lunch or dinner. If noise bothers you, especially on Thursday nights, try a booth in the back.
Lunch has self-parking in the garage (terrific!) and evening valet. Allow an extra five to ten minutes to arrive on time because valet parking is serving four restaurants!"

"I have been to this resturant so many times and even though the menu has changed significantly, the food is outstanding. Menu items have changed but the staff made the old items and that was a pleasure."

"They tailored some dishes to make it Vegetarian. The service was very good and the waitress that we got was very sweet. The appetizers and the main course was ok but the dessert was amazing. Overall a very pleasant experience on Valentine's day."

"Sat at the Sushi bar. Great service from the chef as well as the "side server" James. Tootsie Roll was my favorite. My husband got the Kama cheek. $8.50...it was HUGE. Best deal in town! Not sure if that fish just had a really big cheek or what! We ordered a ton of other stuff too...everything was top notch and they packed our left overs with ice since we were going to the movies."

"The number of the floor staff was far less than needed. I needed to stand up and walk to the counter, asking additional plates, e.tc. by myself for my table more than a few times. Some of the staff were helpful in arranging additional space to keep our tea pot, e.t.c., and answering questions. However, we needed to walk to the counter to get attention to us in the middle of dinner. I think their attitudes were all friendly (particularly the main waitress for our table), but NOT helpful (particularly the main waitress for our table, unfortunately) in terms of “serving”. Paying guests should not be "serving” for own table, but rather wanted to relax, enjoy conversation and food.... We missed that opportunity, unfortunately."

"I tried (according to the server) the two most popular dishes - the tomatillo hot and sour soup, and the miso black cod. Both were not that great and I wouldn't order them again. The soup was strangely flavored, and a bit bitter. The fish was bland and didn't have very much flavor. It was a disappointment, since I do not eat sushi. Also, the basil peach mojito had neither peach, nor basil, and it had mint in it - yet I was assured this was the correct drink. I wouldn't order that again either. However, my companions enjoyed their sushi, and felt that the sushi was excellent. I won't be back though, because the non-sushi food was quite lacking."

"We were there for the last day of the second week of Restaurant Week and really enjoyed the food. The waiter was very nice and accomodating. He was very firendly and gave us great advice.
Only negative was that we showed up 20 minutes early on our reservation and had to wait standing as they did not have a place to sit. The receptionist could have been more friendly in the way we were treated."
