"After having a wonderful dinner, I pinched myself because I felt I am in heaven but still alive to enjoy the food next time. We were at Vatan Dec 2010 and promised ourselves " Whenever we will visit NJ/NY , we make sure to have a dinner atleast once at Vatan ." Our hostess Maria was great, being Turkish , pronounce each dinner item perfectly."

"" Now we have gone for the second time in the last 3 months...first I took my family to celebrate my wife's birthday and now the second time to celebrate Mother's day and also my kids birthday....we all enjoyed the sumptuous vegetarian food, great ambiance, very friendly service...certainly recommend for others..go with lot of appetite we could not finish entire servings"."

"Purely waste of money. Heard a lot about this place for its quality of food. $30 for buffet + 20% mandatory gratuity included in your bill takes the cost to $36.. Don't mind paying so much money but the quality of food is below average. Only quantity and variety is good. Felt miserable spending so much.. would have gone to another place. This hotel is on my banned list.
If you want to have a thali - please have it in the Gujarati place @ Desi Food Galaxy - worth the money $12 for maha thali and food is far superior.."

"Food is delicious and plentiful. Service is prompt and professional.
On the less attractive side, decor goes all the way to tackyville. Huts, trees, waterfalls, dancing Indian beauties... It's all there. Even a wishing well. We had such a great time, though, that we barely noticed. For me, the food was mostly too spicy, but I compensated with triple serving of desserts. All you can eat in the most strangely magical environment -- I'm coming back for sure!"

"Once upon a time this used to be my favorite restaurant to indulge in vegetarian Indian food. But not any more. Either the main chef has chained or they are cutting down on the quality of their food/ingredients. The last time I went the food was just ordinary(not bad!) and nothing to rave about. Each pre-fixe dinner plate costs $30 + taxes/gratuity. I did not feel that it was worth it!"

"Terrible experience. This used to be a nice authentic Gujerati restaurant with unique ambiance. Now it is just an over priced mediocre restaurant. The service is very poor , the menu never changes and the staff have never heard of 'the customer is always right". We mentioned that one of the dishes was very salty and our wait staff told us she had tasted it and it was ok. The samosas were the kind you can buy frozen in the store. No variety in the bread just one kind. We asked for tea without cardamom and were told it is already made and there is no choice. A normal Indian restaurant in Little India would offer better fare for far less. the dishes were all very bland,just very spicy not tasty. Save your money!!"

"I love the ambience and decor at Vatan. The painted tables and rural touches really add to the atmosphere. The food is authentic, gujerati food and the varity means that everyone finds the perfect bite. The appitizer thali has just the right bite size for trying everything. My favs are the sev puri and muthia. The crunch of the puri with the yogurt and tamarind sauce is addictive and the muthia are pure comfort food. The entree thali is divine, the channa are perfectly spiced, the ful gobi cooked just tender but not mushy and the hot puris are, again, addictive, especially when you dip them in the aam rus(mango pulp). The khichidi rounds the meal off beautifully and then you enjoy the tea and ice cream. Will be back soon with more friends!"

"Heading to NYC for a weekend trip, friends of ours recommended this restaurant. My fiancee had been to the restaurant before and wanted me to experience it myself. We had just arrived in NYC, first rushing to the hotel to check in and then to the restaurant. Going inside, the headaches and stress of "running late" disappeared and we were transported, via the decor, music and general ambiance of Vatan, to a quaint Indian village. Our servers brought out each dish, presenting the various delicious entrees to us and explaining which sauce complimented each item. An excellent restaurant and, as our friends did for us, we will definitely be recommending Vatan to any of our friends who are in NYC! Oh yeah and... Best Mango Lassi ever!"

"We loved vatan! They have a set prixfixe menu... Varied, plentiful, and a choice of mild, medium, spicy. It was relaxing to have the food just come, without any ordering. The waitress was super nice and explained the food and set up clearly. best of all is the delightfully hokey decor. The restaurant interior is tricked out to look like a village square where you can eat in thatched roof huts or under the banyan tree, murals all around. Perfect for a nice dinner out."

"I booked a party of 9 to get a memorable Indian dining experience, and it exceeded our expectations. I had been to Vatan some years ago, but I did not expect to find the ambiance more impressive and welcoming than when I had first visited it. We all loved the food (gorgeous portrayal of Indian cuisine, and it was delicious), but the staff really took things to a wonderful level. They were charming, helpful, and accommodative, even when our last guest arrived rit in the middle of the main course! I could not have asked for a better experience that night."

"We returned to Vatan after 9 years. Decoration changed. Food was great. Every one had a smile on their face. Not having to choose what to eat was a blessing after a busy day, as they offer fixed all you can eat Vegetarian Food.
