"We periodically come to Splash for an outstanding meal and dining experience. Based on the price point and location, these are our expectations. Our experience this week, with three in our party, was average food, but the same exceptional service and ambiance. We go to a restaurant primarily for the food, in this case, exceptional food. The shrimp/calamari appetizer was exceptional. The main detractor of the evening were all our entrees were average, is Splash on the decline or was it a bad night for the Chef?"

"My husband and I went to Splash on Saturday May 18th for my birthday. I requested through Open Table for a table near the tropical fish tanks. Not only did I get my wish, Splash had the table decorated especially for me. They even had my name and a birthday wish printed on the menu. It is those extra touches that elevate a good restaurant to a great restaurant.
My husband and I are foodies. Splash never disappoints. The fish is always cooked perfectly. The risotto was sublime and trust me, there are many, many restaurants in Des Moines whom can't get risotto correct . The Key Lime cheesecake is the best that I have ever had with just the right amount of tartness. Simply a stunning meal."

"We went for my wife's 40th birthday and Mother's Day combination. My wife was DELIGHTED with the personalized menus and the wait staff all wished her a Happy Birthday. Being out of towners we weren't really familiar with the Des Moines restaurant scene so we were delighted that several locals recommended Splash. We were even more delighted that the food struck a perfect chord on our foodie strings. We also thought it was very reasonably priced. The wait staff was very knowledgeable about the entire menu, even on the cocktails, and very enthusiastically answered all of our questions. We'll be going back."

"Overrated for Des Moines. I sent the salad back twice (2 different types) as they both appeared 3 days old and brown lettuce. I sat there for 10 minutes without a waiter. Ultimately they took the salad(s) off the bill, but no other compensation for the bad service or poor food quality. I had the scallops which were ok. Temperature a little on the cool side, but after 2 salads I did not want to deal with sending it back. Personally overpriced for the food and service quality and the place was almost empty."

"What an excellent way to spend a quiet friday evening with my "boyfriend"!
We started out with Oysters Rockafeller and on the half shell, followed by PEI Mussels. We both had grilled scallops which were done to perfection! The mashed sweet potatoes were just as tasty and brussel sprouts divine!
We ordered a higher end dry red wine (A Petite Syrah I believe.) and were not disappointed. It was fabulous and the wine list was extensive! We did get a little help with our selection...
The thing we discussed later, was that it would have been nice to have had a salad with our entree'. It was available for purchase, but thought that maybe it would be a nice addition--a small dinner salad. ; )"

"We've been to Splash numerous times and are never disappointed. This trip was no different. In fact, our daughter's 4th birthday dinner (and first "fancy restaurant dinner") there was easily our best experience yet. Our table was not only exactly where we requested (near the fish tanks), but it was adorned with ocean confetti and personalized birthday menus. What a treat. Service was exceptional, patient, and kind. The food was glorious, memorable, and perfectly executed.
Splash just gets better and better. Bravo!"

"My girl friend and I ate at Splash prior to an event at the Civic Center and evidently the evening prior to a review in the Des Moines Register's Datebook. It was a really enjoyable evening with outstanding food and service. After reading the review in the Datebook I wondered if this reviewer had eaten in the same place as we did. There is nothing we could say that was anything but excellent about our experience at Splash. I would recommend it to anyone wanting an outstanding evening of very well prepared seafood. After reading several recent reviews by the Datebook "expert" it is obvious he/she is interested only in being controversial believing it will further their career. Too bad."

"Splash has always been one of our favorite "before show" eating spots. Just the fact that it's so close to the Civic Center so we can be parked and good to go is great. We all had clam chowder and salads at our most recent visit - all was delicious. Over the many times we've dined with you, the wait staff has been efficient, attentive and friendly, the food is always delicious and if we have special needs those are accomodated promptly. This time I asked for romaine instead of iceberg lettuce with my Louis salad and really liked it that way. Thanks!"

"This was the best yet. The oysters were especially fresh, and the coarsely grated horseradish in vinegar perfect. We had the roasted calamari salad--the calamari was sweet and tender, not rubbery, and the mix of vegetables and amount of tangy dressing well balanced. For entrees we had the swordfish in mustard sauce and the opakapaka, a Hawaiian pink snapper I tasted for the first time. Delicious, and the vegetables--an Asian slaw, Brussels sprouts, and asparagus were well-prepared as always. We skip the potatoes. Our waitress was new to Splash but experienced and a delightful person."

"We went to Splash for my birthday following Jekyll and Hyde at the Civic Center. Started with grilled calamari and king crab cocktail, both of which were delicious. Our server was Iris, and she was phenomenal and honest, helping us decide what type of fish to order and in what fashion. Her taste was spot on, and I absolutely loved my Chilean Sea-bass with mashed sweet potatoes per her recommendations. The next time we are in Des Moines we will definitely be dining here again."

"Went for Valentine's day for the third time since October. We've always had great experiences at Splash. This time did not disappoint. We were seated in the Oyster Bar, which wasn't quite as romantic as other seating areas, but it was the perfect vibe for us. Shrimp & Calamari app was great as was the cup of Clam Chowder I had and the Scallops meuniere that my date had. I tried the Sriracha scallops for the first time. The jasmine rice and veggies were great. The sauce was nice, but the preparation method ruined the delicate scallops, in my opinion. They were char grilled and bitter (one was entirely inedible). Oh well. We'll be back; I'll just know not to try that dish again and to stick with my usual scallops meuniere."

"The surf and turf dish was underwhelming. The steak was very thin and the potato croquette had a strange spongy texture and an "off" flavor. Hard to describe. The scallop main entree was very good. Service was good. We both thought overall that although the food and ambiance was enjoyable, it wasn't worth the price."

"Very mediocre....on the edge of tacky....huge fish tank with no fish in a center focal point??? Ordered the tuna...coming from Florida I have really missed my seafood so I was excited to find this place upon moving to Des Moines but the tuna, tho presented nicely was a big glob of sinew. I found it strange the waitress didn't ask if there was a problem when she cleared my plate basically uneaten."

"Being right across the street from the Civic Center is a great draw. I found the food good, but not outstanding and the cost relatively high. The waitress suggested the bass meuniere. It was mediocre. My husband had the blackened bass which was much better to our tastes. The mashed sweet potatoes were the highlight of my plate. We were seated in the basement room. I think I would have liked being on a higher level. I felt like I was in the dungeon. It is not a restaurant that I will quickly go to again."
