Macao Trading Co. covers two floors offering both a spacious dining room upstairs and an intimate lounge downstairs. The cuisine represents the blend of Chinese and Portuguese cuisines found in the once independent colony of its namesake. Located on Church St, at the edge of Tribeca, Macao’s décor is a dramatic composition of lighting, relics and industrial iron work. The high ceilings and tucked away location provide a fitting setting for the restaurant’s 1940s portside warehouse feel, recalling the adventure of Macao’s "red lantern district."
"I came for my dinner, everyone was confused and we were seated downstairs bc of a burlesque show?! Hello, I was wearing cdg abd saw the weird doorman who worked at yohji?! Food was meh, drinks weak as seltzer! Come on now, 15 for a drink and couldn't catch a buzz? Food was pricey and meh? Waiter was super nice and funny. Don't know name but we were downstairs. Host was was helpful. Would I come back? Sure but not my first choice and I'm out 4 nights a week. Oh, octopus was yum, squid salad ok, steak was pricey and big but for 39 dollars? Darn, I could buy a better steak at dickson for similar?"

"Being of Portuguese decent and having an uncle live in Macau I was pretty excited to try Macau and Macanese food. The mussels were DIVINE! Also, I wish my piri piri chicken was a wee bit spicier. Having said that, what a great vibe at Macau and the bar scene is STELLAR."

"Great vibe, interesting and hip decor. Food was creative, well-seasoned and reasonable for the servings. African Chicken and Pork Belly Steamed Dumplings were a hit. Great 'mixologist' with a grand assortment. Service staff went out of their way to please...no bad attitudes here. ENJOY!"

"the red kale salad was really excellent, almost enough to overcome the unfortunate experience of the waitress spilling a glass of red wine on my brand new white sweater... Beyond that, the vegetable noodles, which the waitress (yes, her) had said would be sweet, had quite a bit more kick to it than sweetness, but good (kind of drenched in the sauce though--a little more balance would have been great). My friend had the climbing ants and she loved it. I'm hoping the drycleaning will work on the stains; the waitress assured me it would because her parents own a drycleaner (um, what?); will find out on Tuesday. Accidents happen, and she was totally sorry and the manager came right over with her card, but still..."

"Hot & vibrant spot in Tribeca, you can find yourself in Macao with a great NY bar... Gets busy with a nice crowd even Sunday night! A good place for dinner as well, so you can start with a nice apperitif, have a romantic dinner (ask table upstairs), then join crowd at the bar downstairs when it gets busy and noisy for a long night out. Better for a small group dinner -party or night out with friends: quite affordable + great ambience + good drinks + quite good food."

"I had high expectations for this place. I loved the mood lighting and decorations but the seating is awkward and the music is WAY too LOUD. THe noise level forces people to scream in order to hear each other. It was so loud i couldn't hear my waitress or my date!!! i don't recall it ever being that loud at a concert. Totally ridiculous. One good thing is the food which was exeptional.Too bad we we had to rush through our meal so we could get out of the restaurant as quickly as possible and nurse our splitting headaches."

"Macao has an intriguing dining menu and really, really robust drink menu--one trip will definitely not be enough to try everything that catches your eye unless you go in with a large group. We ordered the African Chicken, Chili Prawns, Ants Climbing the Tree (glass noodles w/ minced pork) and a side of green beans. They were all good, but the African Chicken and the green beans were the real standouts to me. I would recommend getting some cocktails while your there--the bartenders are really top notch. For drinks, they have just about anything you could think of asking for.
We went for dinner at 6:00 pm on a Friday and the place was basically empty. By 6:30-45, however, it was transformed into an lively, chic bar scene."

"The room is pretty spectacular - very atmospheric and probably romantic if you're looking for that. The food is good, not great. Mushroom croquettes were mushy croquettes - not very flavorful and no sauce or dip came with it. Service is indifferent. It's all about the mood."

"Not a good place to spend a good time with friends. Too small and noise. Several of us lsot their voice due to the screaming. Music was loud and too crowded. Food was ok. I was expecting a better menu options. Appetizers tested muc better than entries. As of the entries, just the NY Strip was decent but small (6 - 7 oz). Is agood place to hang out in the bar, good mixers and ambiance."

"Always hate to wait more than a minute or two for a table when I have a reservation, but after waiting for almost 15 minutes on Friday night, it was an amazing dining experience. We had a great table (downstairs), a waitress who seemed a little distant at first but came around with a lot of excellent recommendations, and some spectacular dishes. Two appetizer musts: 1. grilled octopus 2. short ribs off the bone. Amazing entree: The prawns. Dessert: No matter what you select, get a scoop of the cream cheese ice cream."

"I came here with a group of 6 for a post bday dinner party. It was perfect. Great hip vibe, great selection of cocktails, and the food was good. We tried a bunch of their cocktails and they were all really good. To eat, we started with the bacon buns, and dumplings-both were good and I'd recommend them to others. Then we shared the cod, haka noodles, prawns, black rice and brussel sprouts. The haka noodles and prawns were my favorite. The prawns were just the right amount of spicy. The cod was good but unmemorable, I probably wouldn't order them again."

"Owner took the time to not only greet my table and introduce himself but he also engaged my sons in conversation about karate and gave them a free bowl of ice cream. Burnt wine cocktain was excellent as were the bacon buns. We will come back."

"Food was excellent and service was prompt. Great place for sharing plates for fusion food with an exotic twist. Not overly authentic "Mecanese" but great food regardless."
