Bar Breton Reviews List

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"I haven't recovered from the loss of Fleur de Sel, and am so happy to see that chef Cyril didn't leave Manhattan (although he can open a branch down here in DC any time he wants). He's been repositioning his labor-intensive French cuisine (from Fleur de Sel) to create a homier, but still superb, Northern French bistro atmosphere. His talent for creating remarkable dishes with overlooked ingredients (a delicious pork belly special) is on display here. I'm leaving out an extra star because I don't think Bar Breton has quite reached its zenith yet--but I'm sure it will. NOTE: my guests were happy and intend to return."

Review 2 for Bar Breton

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"Everything was excellent. Creative, savory dishes; good ambiance. The only one complaint was that the server neglected to return to check to see that everything was served. The busboys were very energetic and refilled water glasses constantly. The seating was a little tight though. It would be nice to have coat hooks to free up some bench space that's tight to begin with."

Review 3 for Bar Breton

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"The food was good, though perhaps nothing exceptional. I was generally satisfied with the restaurant until it came time to get the check. My friend and I split the bill on two credit cards, signed the receipts that were brought back to us and left the restaurant. 10 blocks later we realized they hadn't brought us our cards along with the receipts. We had to go back to the restaurant (missing the start of the concert we were going to see) and when the cards were retrieved the hostess wasn't even mildly apologetic!"

"Some of the best food we have had. The two of us shared 8 dishes, two dessert dishes and six savory. Of the six savory dishes three of them had the same sauce, which was a very very good sauce but it was a bit of a repeat. Wait staff could have / should have warned us."

Review 19 for Bar Breton

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"I'd heard Bar Breton was good for brunch and thought it would be a good place to give a try for Valentine's Day. Unfortunately, it wasn't. The galette (with poached egg, spinach, and parmesan) had all the makings of being delicious, but was not salted at all. I could say the same for the burger (which but for lack of salt would have been quite good). The "fresh squeezed" orange juice, however, tasted like Tropicana that had gone bad. The french fries were too snappy, probably from potatoes that were too new (and therefore not yet starchy at all). I was really hoping to discover a brunch place in the neighborhood -- but unfortunately this wasn't it."

Review 20 for Bar Breton

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"For Valentine's day we went here for dinner because we didn't want to celebrate V-day with crazy pricing and 4 course menus. We usually share an appetizer and dessert.

We were very, very happy with the food, the ambiance, and the service and greeting at the door. However, the waitress rushed through our entire dinner, from the appetizer to the dessert. It was chop-chop, eat, pay, and get out to leave room for others.

Will go back sometime to try the galettes, and take our time...

Review 21 for Bar Breton

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Absolutely superior food! The chef is a master and we found the food to be simply marvelous.

However, the entire experience was marred somewhat by overly loud music and a clueless, ineffective busboy. He never came near us in the beginning and we had to beg the waitress for bread when we were already done with our appetizer; then he suddenly appeared when we were finishing our main courses and started clearing the table while we were still chewing. Too bad, because everything else was great.

Review 26 for Bar Breton

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"It is a good found for brunch in the neigborhood. I randomly picked this place for my sunday brunch with a girl friend. Ordered a brunch special:Flatiron Galette (smoked salmon wrap over french buckwheat crepe) and a oringe mimosa. The mimosa is neglectable, but the Flatiron Galette is very good. Bonus, it is gluten free. The crepe is very thin, as well as the smoked salmon. The texture is very complex: the softness of smoked salmon, the sligt chewiness of the crepe, and the chunkiness of radish salad inside the crepe.

The decoration is very cozy. Great for brunch on a cold yet sunny day. The price is very reasonable for New York standard. I will definitely come back for another try. But will not order mimosa any more. It yucks.

Review 27 for Bar Breton

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"We went to Bar Breton on the recommendation of a foodie friend. I took my twenty-something kids. We had a great time sampling the bar-snack menu and each had a gallette. I was prepared for a bigger bill having been to Fleur de sel many times. Glad to see that there is room for a place like BB in NYC. A nice simple, tasty and well prepared menu in a relaxed atmosphere. We did have a great waitress even if she didn't get our obscure jokes. We'll be back."

"I almost don't want to write how good Bar Breton is, as I'm afraid I'll never be able to get in again! The savory galettes are absolutely fantastic. My husband had the eggs en cocotte and is still talking about them. Though I've never had dessert at brunch before, the apple crepe is a must...unlike any crepe I've ever had before. We tried to go back for brunch again the next day but the restaurant was full. I can't wait until we can return."

Review 31 for Bar Breton

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Our waitress was very friendly, attentive and offered great suggestions when prompted. I am so glad I went with her recommendations. NY Mag was right about the burger and perfectly seasoned bistro-style fries-- amazing! Also, they seemed to have homemade mayo which was a nice touch. Totally unlike the gooey consistency I usually associate with mayonnaise and much more flavorful. Wine was chilled to 53 degrees (really unusual in NYC) and even though I ordered the cheapest red on the menu, it was still one of the best wines I've had in a long time (Domaine la Fontsainte, from Longuedoc). I liked it so much, I'd buy a case of it. The bacon and chicken croquettes we ended up orrdering melted in your mouth. I cant wait to go back."

Review 37 for Bar Breton

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"Unfortunately, the food was not good. I went to the restaurant based on a glowing review from the New Yorker magazine. They specifically identified the "Parisien" fries as a reason to go. The cheeseburger that my husband and I ordered was tasteless, and I actually had to send the fries back for further cooking so they would be crisp. Who sends fries back? That's how bad they were. I would expect the hamburger to be grilled on the outside and slightly pink on the inside. There was no evidence of grilling, and the bun was too much bread for the hamburger. Would not return."

Review 38 for Bar Breton

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"A nice casual atmosphere. The food is great. The service is not up to the prices, though. And we always seem to be getting rushed out, even when it's early (11 pm): Clearing the plates before everyone is done, bringing the check before being asked (or ready), etc. This means that even though I like the food, I'm not sure I'd go when it really matters, since the service is so unpredictable and usually flawed."

Review 39 for Bar Breton

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Bar Breton's specialty are its galettes, buckwheat crepes. The brunch special with choice of galette or omelet and a mimosa, bloody mary or fresh OJ was a draw. The crepes were very good, although they were served lukewarm. The service was attentive and friendly and the ambiance was relaxed and allowed for conversation."

Review 42 for Bar Breton

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"I have been there 3 times. I am a professional cook in NYC. I think that outside their specialty (buckwheat crepes), Bar Breton has some serious work to do on their dishes and the execution. I had the burger, which they claim is ground on the premises and has 3 different kinds of meat in it. It honestly had absolutely no flavor what so ever. It also felt like it was pre-seared and then reheated on pick up. Dry, no juice. My wife had the Pork loin which was well cooked, but the mushroom sauce tasted like it was out of a can. The dessert could have been great but the execution totally failed, caramelized apple crepe; the apples were raw and the caramel was burned.... It's too bad because I really like the ambiance and the restaurant..."

Review 44 for Bar Breton

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"I went her for an anniversary with my boyfriend and the individual little booths were really fantastic. The menu was interesting. I had the foie gras sliders and the salmon with lentils, both of which were great, although i didn't taste any pineapple in the foie gras. I had the lemon crepe cake for dessert which was outstanding! My boyfriend has the burger, which was great according to him. overall, great place BUT the drinks they have on their menu are no longer there. they just have a full bar."

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Great gluten free restaurant - delicious food that is tasty! Smallish portions don't take away from the deliciousness, from appetizer to dessert! The lamb gallette was just scrumptious. We'd reserve for a large party, many of whom failed to show, and they were SO gracious about it. All in all, a great experience."

Review 50 for Bar Breton

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"We went to brunch at Bar Breton on a Sunday several weeks ago. Our group consisted of 4 adults & a baby in a stroller. The staff couldn't have been more accommodating and found us a quiet table (the baby was sleeping) in a corner and with a 'built-in' parking spot for the stroller. It was perfect! The food was fantastic as well - I don't think I've had eggs benedict this good in a very long time, maybe in ever! We also ordered the Salmon Galette (I think called the "Flatiron") - incredibly tasty however very very small portion; I'm definitely for quality over quantity any day but have to say that portion was more appetizer size than entree. I will just have to order more food next time I go. And we will all definitely go back!"

"All around very pleasant experience. The gallettes were great, burger was decent, service was very pleasant and accommodating even to a toddler. I'd go back for sure. (A better experience than the one I had at Fleur de Sel a couple of years ago). I also like the decor. Very pleasant place."

"Surprisingly good food, in fact I felt like the menu did not do justice to the actual food, which was way more interesting than described in print. Review 56 for Bar Breton

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"Visited Bar Breton after a wonderful meal in Fleur de Sel on our last New York trip. I can understand the owners' fears that fine dining may not be appropriate in the current economic climate, but while the food at Bar Breton was excellent, the bar and soccer on TV was less so. If you can swallow the distractions, you won't be disappointed - it's just I miss Fleur de Sel!"

"The pulled veal sandwich was very tasty. Really good, hearty and different. That said, was it worth $16? I'm not sure. It was still just a sandwich on a bun.
They make a big deal about their homemade hamburger buns, but I was not the least impressed. It was doughy and had no great flavor.
