Casual yet upscale neighborhood restaurant with dining on 2 floors, 2 bars & a lovely garden with koi pond & fountain. Eclectic American menu featuring tapas, soups, salads, pastas, steaks, chops, fresh fish & several vegetarian options. Conveniently located in the heart of Chelsea.
"We went for a Mother's Day brunch and found this brunch menu to be a bargain. They have a lovely garden setting in the back with a water feature. The service was very attentive. We would definitely return."

"Visited this place 5 years ago was great now a totally different, the food was huge in portion but totally lacked any flavour. The owner needs to improve this situation soon."

"I hadn't visited East of Eighth in a while. The food was just okay, not as good as I had remembered. Older crowd upstairs at the restaurant and younger crowd in the bar downstairs."

"I had a pre theater dinner with three guests at a prix-fixe $19.95 for three courses. Excellent choice of dishes for each course, and quality was way better than I expected for this price. We were all happy with the dishes we chose. Terrific value for money."

"Convenient and well priced. Nice helpful waitress. We went with a large group. Some of the dishes were good. Some of the dishes were bad. Others were okay. The bar on the main floor was packed but the dining room upstairs was quiet and uncrowded. We would go back if we were in the neighborhood but would not out of our way to there."

"I met up with two friends from San Francisco for lunch and decided to have lunch here. Was I pleased! The prices are fair and the food was good. I liked our server and she provided great service. The artwork on the walls was great and put my table in the right mood for gallery visiting afterwards. I will return."

"Nice restaruant in Chelsea which is not one of my favorite parts of town. The bar on the first floor is relaxed and fun. The second floor is a nicer restaraunt. The meatloaf was outstanding. My husband had the fork and knife chicken and loved it as well. I will definitely go back when I am in the neighborhood."

"Fantastic spot, very fairly priced menu considering the 'classy' food selection and more 'upscale' dining experience. The place was packed, and we were immediately seated with a table next to the window (we had a reservation, but I was still impressed we did not have to wait at all). I highly recommend East of Eighth."

"We've had several lovely birthday dinners here and look forward to many more. It's always a very nice meal with friendly and attentive service. The pre-theatre menu is an especially good deal, but the whole menu is good and reasonably priced."

"East of Eighth is a reliable local spot where the food is good and unfussy. We were having a reunion of cousins and specifically asked for a table that was not too loud, where we could talk. We got exactly that, in the upstairs back room and it was perfect. Everyone was happy with their food and the evening was a success. Not a special event place, but we will definitely be back."

"Went here for a nice Friday night dinner with my boyfriend. Walked in and the bar downstairs was hopping, but we got seated right away (with a reservation) upstairs and the mood was much more relaxed and great for eating a nice dinner.
We had fantastic wait staff. Never had to wait for drink refills or bread, etc.
The food was wonderful. My boyfriend said the duck breast was the plate of the night, but I loved my seafood ravioli. The only "miss" was the hummus/feta/guacamole appetizer for two. Nothing in that was great, just good.
The cornbread in the breadbasket was so delicious. The server even brought me extra!
For dessert we shared the cannoli and biscotta sampler. So nice!
I had a great meal and will be back."

"The restaurant was very cozy. I enjoyed the food for the most part, went here with a Groupon and it was an excellent deal. We had the ceasar salad, which was a little different then I was used to. Also, had the calamari as an appetizer. It was a big portion size and very delicious. For entrees, I had the lobster ravioli and it was delicious. On the other hand my husband had the lamb and it was a little charry tasting because it was burnt, but the meat was still tender. Also, whatever they served with the lamb was very dry, I'm not sure if it was polenta or what. The desert was an apple cobbler, it was good. Overall, nice place."

"Sorry, but worst food in 3 years in NYC and we dine EVERY Saturday night at different locations in NYC! Breadbasket included nice cornbread but OLD white bread. Matzo Ball Soup came - before drinks - in minutes (thanks to microwave we assume) and was just okay. Entrees: Pasta with meatballs was fair, Knife & Fork Fried chicken was horrible and let's you doubt whether you wanna see the kitchen. Service was okay and we felt sorry as it's not their fault. Their are million places in Manhattan which are worth dining out, but definitely NOT this place!"

"Very good service, low prices. Convenient to subway. Food was ok. I liked the guacamole appetizer, but the salmon entree was nothing exciting although at least it was moist. Skip the dessert. I had the creme caramel which was a jiggly strange tasting thing."

"LOVE THIS PLACE. White-tablecloth restaurant that's also informal; cozy bar and (in season) garden downstairs, high ceilings and spaciious upstairs space, plus private room. Great choice of interesting (reasonably appetizers, varied vegetarian and fish dishes, along with burgers, salads, meat entrees, everything super reasonably priced. Pleasant service -- a terrific neighborhood spot. Everyone I take here wants to come back."

"It took a while to be seated, despite our reservations, but once we found our table the wait staff was professional and attentive. We were seated on the second floor across from the bar, and the high ceilings and picture windows provided a sense of space and comfort. Our entrees were delicious (pork chops and harvest platter), and the brownie sundae was the perfect size for two to share. It is located right next to the Clearview Chelsea, which makes this a nice start (or continuation) of a date night."

"When we got there, it was 11 AM. I made reservations for 11 AM on OpenTable.com. Although I was on time, the people in charge acted like I was early and they weren't ready. They did not ask me if I made a reservation. They asked me to stand over on the side. Eventually, they took me to the table. Since there were 2 of us, they assumed that we wanted a table for 2. However, the reservation was for 4 people. They sat us at a table for 2 until I told them that I had a reservation, and that it was for 4 people. Then they sent us a table for 4. When the other 2 people arrive, no one asked them if they might be with the party who were already seated. The food was good. From a service point of view, it was a disaster for me."

"I go to East of Eighth quite often and over all they are a very stable neighborhood gem...food is always good (never GREAT) and the service and atmosphere are always above par. However, their wine and bar service in general,is terrible...both at the bar and at the dinner table. At the bar, completely over priced for, quite frankly, swill. Not a lot better at table service, though you have more to choose from. 2 different beers were stale and wines were undrinkable. I always forget this when making reservations for special occasions, but will have to remember in the future...its too bad too, great place otherwise."

"East of Eight has always been a good standby. However, this time the service was just okay and I would recommend NOT to order off the prix fixe dinner menu. Ala carte is the way to go."

"My wife and I were in NYC to celebrate her birthday. When we arrived, we were brought to our table which was out in the 'garden area'. It was quiet, but I was not fond of the plastic lawn chairs and the dead garden which really ruined the mood. My wife ordered the shrimp which she described as average, and I ordered the fork and knife fried chicken-this was NOT fried chicken, was watery and just didnt taste right. I pretty much ate just the mashed potatoes-on a more positive note tho, I do have to say that the waiter ( service )we had was exceptional and even put a canlde on the desert and wished my wife a happy birthday which was a really nice touch! I had a Groupon, so I didn`t have to pay full price - but even still I wouldnt return again"

"This was a perfect place for my reunion with an old friend allowing us to catch up. The service was great giving us the time to tell stories of our 20 lost years. We could actually hear each other because the dining room was upstairs, away from the lovely and lively bar downstairs. We were also surprised with a pre-fixe theater menu that was a great deal of three courses for $20. But even without that, the prices were decent."

"Went on a Tuesday night with a friend. The staff was very attentive and friendly. We were not rushed at all which is very important to me. The menu has a nice variety of meats, pastas and desserts. Appetizer and dinner were served nice apart. we were very happy with our visit. Wine was a little pricey, but hey, it's the city. Will definite go again and recommend."

"This restaurant is neither romantic nor elegant; the decor is plain and a little tired. But there is a reasonable trade off: the food is reliably good; service is polite and gracious; the room is quiet enough to converse; and the value is excellent. So if you are interested in a meal rather than a dining "experience", this is a good choice. I ate there on a recent Sunday and ordered their three course dinner for $20 - an ample portion of gravlox with marinated cucumber, mussels in a white wine sauce and a solid if unspectacular creme caramel laced with tiny bits of orange rind."
