"The food was great and innovative. The service, for the most part, was fine. Note to the MOD: please don't have the waitstaff ask you in the beginning (before you even had drinks) whether you'd like some olives and almonds with your bread. That is gratis in many restaurants, and the way it was phrased was very misleading. And I can't help wondering if my unfinished bowl of olives and almonds were going to be thrown out or just refreshed. I've worked in enough restaurants to know that recycling does occur. I probably wouldn't recommend this place if you've got some conservative eaters in your group. But if you guys are adventurous, a very nice restaurant to try out. The sonhos were fabulous."

"Sevice is out standing, Food is excellent, especially sea urchin, potato soup, black squid ink etc.. as well as the presentations. Thanks for the chef's choice of igredients. Also, we tried the first time Portuguese's red wine. It was surprisingly wonderful and resonable.I will go back Aldea again for the appetizers & small dishes which my favarits things to try like a testing menu w/lovely services. If you are really appreciate the delicate's small dishes, I highy recommend!!"

"For our first visit to New York City we specially booked a table from Europe (Netherlands)on february 17, 2010 because of the good reviews about the kitchen chief Georges Mendes. The dishes were one for one super delicious! Great cuisine! First class food products harmonized with careful choizen flavours. Excellent service. Good wines! We will recommend this adress further to friends!!

"Aldea was a very delectable find. I celebrated my 4 year anniversary there and they were more than accommodating making sure a flower delivery I had scheduled was in place before we arrived.
The wait staff was knowledgeable, accessible and amiable. The food was appetizing to both our eyes and satisfying to our palates. The portions were just the right size from the small bites to the deserts.
Aldea was a great experience all around."

"The concept behind Aldea takes us on a voyage through the different flavors of Portuguese cuisine. The meticulous preparation of each dish shows us how much attention the owner and Chef George Mendes devotes to each of the "experiences" coming out of his kitchen.

When going there, try to get a seat at the Chef's bar, which overlooks the kitchen. You will have a great experience and learn a few tricks by watching how each plate is prepared."

"The late lunch worked out perfectly has we got a chance to see the kitchen in action thru the glass screen.It reminded me of a recent trip to Galicia to sample some of the food from the new chefs of this region,seeing them work like busy bees is a gem to watch.
The food was excellent starting with the shrimp salad followed by the roast duck "paella"dish which was so tasty.The menu is very small but the pastry chef made it possible for me to have a gluten free dessert!
Highly recommended."

"My ratings reflect a restaurant week meal, not their normal menu. The lackluster dishes disappointed on every level: limited range of tastes, one strong flavor that dominated the dish, no flair, presentation boring, and the dishes flat. The highlight of the meal was dessert where we ordered on the regular menu, the prix fix dessert is not worth mentioning. The sonhos were tasty and wonderfully sweet. We also had the Arroz de Pato (reg menu) which had more distinct flavors but again it was not complex, just separate flavors (meats mostly) that did not create an interesting whole. I cannot recommend Aldea for rw but it might be better during another month, but I am not wasting my money on trying again in a city with too many options."

"What a find! We went out of our way to try Portuguese food for lunch in preparation for a trip to Portugal. What we found was absolutely first-rate, new Mediterranean food: simple plates with complex, delightful sauces. What flavors!!! Service was very good. We arrived at 1:30 and had plenty of space and a quiet table. We plan to return next time we are in NYC."

"7pm Bday Dinner w/Kerry. 5 course tasting. Fingerling potato amuse. Foie Gras w/cocoa nib and pear. Shrimp Alhinho. Cod w/tomatoes and a parsely coulis. Arroz de Pato. Pre dessert of lemon curd, pine nuts, vanilla foam. Gianduja dome w/passion fruit. Pear gels, chocolate caramels, Mini beignets. Overall pretty good but spotty service. Would certainly just go a la carte next time, portions looked very large and could easily be shared, and would likely get to see more things for the money, plus ahve the option to get what we wanted. Still, enjoyable meal."

"Aldea was a superb discovery. Of late, I had been reading about this restaurant in several publications and I was curious to sample some of the listed dishes, especially since it was being promoted as having a Portuguese bent. I could only score a Tuesday 9:30pm reservation (perhaps because people had been reading the same reviews I had), but that wasn't really a problem. The restaurant itself has a very intimate feel; low lighting, tight 2-seater tables and an open kitchen on the first floor (I never got to see the dining space in the upper level). The food was all very good, although I expected the cod to be cooked in the traditional bacalao style, which it wasn't. Will go back to sample tasting menu next time."

"As soon as I was served with my appetizer I could see that the chef, George Mendes was an artist. He paints the white plates skillfully with his own style of food combinations. Satisfying the palate as much as the eye. I ordered the ORGANIC CHICKEN BREAST (perfectly cooked and moist) with baby bok choy, mushrooms, coconut-curry which was excellent followed with BANANA AND PASSIONFRUIT TARTE with Appleton’s rum and raisin ice cream which was equally delicious. I tried my companion's SKATE “A LA PLANTXA” with zucchini ribbons, pea shoots, caper-brown butter equally very good. I look forward to trying the other dishes the next time I have a chance visit this restaurant."

"We sat at the chef's counter. Everything was excellent, from the bread to the dessert. "the modernity of the design is striking, the charcuterie even moreso! Impeccable ingredients wonderfully put together... the Hanger steak and shortribs were outstanding, the lamb tenderloin was perfect, and the lamb belly (prepared to look like pork belly) was and exciting addition. "We found the food to be low-key with subtle flavors. It's a perfect match for the nice selection of reasonably priced Portugese wines on the list. An excellent choice for dinner. Was recently recommended by Daniel Boulud as a place he likes to go in NYC. I can see why."

"An unique and fun dining experience. Portuguese with a twist. A few minor quibbles, but still worth trying again. The sea urchin appetizer was disappointing after all the raves, but the duck with rice was outstanding. Cute, attentive waitstaff. "Definitely try the paella de pata...it is excellent. Also in the so-delicious-already-thinking-of-when-to-come-back category are the Bentford Ham (sliced like prosciutto and served with French bread lightly coated with tomato sauce), foie gras terrine (served with perfect accoutrements: cocoa seeds, quince paste and dried green grapes and toasted brioche slices, in my opinion a must have when eating foie gras terrine generally) and the monkfish. The place gets hopping later on. I had a 7p reservation, but the place really fills up around 8p."

"We selected Aldea because of friends raving over George's creative, flavorful, mouth watering
dishes, and you know what? They were 125% correct!!
The food, the ambience, and the wine selections were fit for a
casual midweek dinner date and the celebrity table just nearby.

We opted for the dinner scallops as an appetizer which were out
of this world! I had the duck and he had the steak which both melted
in your mouth like food from a palace.

Desserts are to die for. Sorbets so original you'd think you
were eating fresh fruit or a newly cracked coconut."

"I was only in the city for the day which leads to difficult decisions for someone who enjoys good food but the menu sounded great so I made reservations for lunch. I wasn't disappointed by the Jamon Serrano or the Duck confit. My server was friendly, helpful, and appropriately attentive especially considering I was having a leisurely lunch by myself (which often doesn't go so well). Overall, a lovely dining experience I would absolutely recommend."

"My Wife wanted to take me out for my Birthday, and also requested for a tasting menu. The Chef and his staff went out of their way to prepare us a 5course tasting meal that was just sensational!@!! Service was spot on, and We loved the attention to detail, focus, balance of flavor, and respect to ingredients used in each dish. We had to order the Sea Urchin Toast as an extra since it sounded sooo good... Oh my god! Easily one of the best dish I had in NYC, in a while. Chef Mendes came out and greeted us as well, and he was very friendly and engaging as well. Thank you for making my Birthday a delicious one, and yes. We will be back!!"

"My wife and I had our anniversary dinner here, and the detailed service matched the occasion. They paid attention to my reservation note by greeting us for the occasion as we entered, and they wrote a note on our dessert plate. Although somewhat played out, the modern ambience fit the occasion; sleek lines, spare appointments, and dimly lit spaces muted the high key painting scheme. We enjoyed the short rib and hanger steak dish. My wife didn't like the accompanying smoked mashed potatoes, but I thought they tasted great with the plate's sauce, beef drippings, scallion garnish. Arroz de Pato - not extraordinary, but good and filling. Cuttlefish - delicious. Pork belly & apple slices - tasty, but not worth the price. Sonho dessert - FUN."

"Dinner for two on a Tuesday night. Worth noting that the restaurant was very gracious about moving back our reservation 60 minutes because of a scheduling conflict. Staff is kind, discrete and knowledgeable. We each had three courses, all seafood. Overall fish quality was exceptionally high. The only complaint is a common one about kitchens at night - at 9:30 on a weeknight, the composition was a little sloppy. (e.g., the farm egg served in shell was slopped on the side of the shell somewhat, too much oil was plated in the sauce for the shrimp starter, toast point with the sea urchin was cracked and fell apart.) Unacceptable, regardless of the hour. If Aldea wants to move to the A-list, the staff must make every plate special all night."

"We drove into the city to dine here. When we were seated, you could feel cold air blowing from the vents. We ask the hostess if we could be moved due to the draft. Her response was she had a table located outside of the dining room that is used for walk ins. Not too appetizing description, so we sat with our coats on. The waiter was nice enough to find someone that could atleast turn the fan off. I believe the heater broke, but no one wanted to deal with the situation. Not good when its 20 degrees outside. The food had some hits, some misses. Reasonably priced. Not worth a second trip, however."

"My boyfriend and I had early dinner last Saturday. Everything that we ordered was absolutely perfect. Food here is amazing. They are light and yet very tasty. Service was excellent as well. Considering the quality of the food, the prices are very reasonable. This is probably the best restaurant that we visited in recent months. We have been trying different restaurants every week, and we are trying not to repeat. But, we made a reservation again to go back in a few weeks. We are looking forward to having dinner at this restaurant again."

"I read the reviews for this restaurant in the local time out magazine back in July and have been wanting to try it ever since. Every dish tasted as amazing as it looked. I felt as though I was in an iron chef episode and the chefs came out to the table with each course to describe the ingredients and the perfect bite. The service was wonderful and they were very accommodating given that one person in our party canceled at the last minute. It was no problem for them. They also checked all of our coats and bags so that we could just relax and enjoy the delicious food. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants a nice, little bit more upscale night out."

"The restaurant is long a narrow with the kitchen at the back. We booked this restaurant after good reviews from the various food boards and was not disappointed. My main was the supposedly one of Mr. Mendes' signature dish, the 'Arroz de Pato,' a Portuguese paella. It was simple and delicious. The wine list is fairly priced though woefully short on Vintage Port wines which is surprising for a Portuguese fine dining restarant. For dessert, we shared a 'Spiced Yogurt Panna Cotta' which was an excellent dish to cap off the evening. Overall, this restaurant was very good and we would go again. If you're booking a reservation for table of 3 or less and want an interesting view, ask to sit at the bar at the back looking toward the kitchen."

"The presentation may be less fussy than at the best-known cultinary cathedrals around town, but it's very good, and the food is top-notch. Have dined here several times and never been the least disappointed. A wonderful restaurant."

"One of the best meals we've had - anywhere! The chef clearly has an excellent set of culinary skills, deep experience with mentor chefs and most important, vision - and is a rising star for sure. Service and attention to detail equally stellar. One in our party must eat gluten-free (I noted this on the Open Table booking form) and restaurant manager, Heather, called ahead of time to discuss and assure me that they could accommodate our dietary restrictions. Once we got there, she introduced herself and was just great. This place is going places - book it now, because a year from now it'll be a tough ticket to get!!"

"I went with my mother and father for my father's birthday. Everyone enjoyed the food thoroughly, especially the hanger steak! The atmosphere was soothing and comfortable. The service was knowledgeable but not pretentious. Our server overheard us wish my father a happy birthday and brought as special dessert with a candle without us asking. I would definitely return!"

"The service was excellent. Our waiter was knowledgeable about the wine list, and helpful in assisting us to make a selection. We were less impressed with the kitchen for two reasons: the portions were smaller than expected and the menu selections was not all that numerous, at least, we felt like there was more restraint shown in providing entree alternatives than the prices at this restaurant warrant. Having said this, the service was prompt and the food served enjoyable."
