David Burke Townhouse is the masterpiece of Award-winning Executive Chef David Burke, whose reputation for wildly creative takes on American ingredients is unsurpassed. Since 2003, David Burke has been serving provocative Modern American Cuisine in an elegantly refurbished Upper East Side space. The restaurant's design is inspired by the bold colors and lacquered surfaces on the 1930's, yet it has decidedly contemporary aesthetic. "Our first visit and not our last!From the minute we entered we knew our dining experience would be special. The townhouse is decorated in whimsy --wonderful art, beautiful decorations and lots of color. Even our dining plates had a prawn on them. The food was superb- the tasting menu was a must--two in our party raved about their interesting and well prepared selections. My husbands lamb and my veal was superb. Dessert was a treat--will definitely go again!"

"This was a business lunch and I made the reservaton for 1.30PM which was just right. An earlier and it would have been too noisy and crowded. Just one minor complaint, when I arrived the gentleman by the reception desk/coat check was on his cell phone, a personal call it seemed, and it took at least 3 miutes before he hung up and greeted me."

"superb in every way except the wone list. For an American restaurant its list was heavy with french wines and scarce on US wines. The prices charged for wine were far form being reasonable in evry way."

"food was oh so good. the chef here really takes risks and they payoff, the place is not pretentious at all. i had a female sommelier who was outstanding, she recommended an awesome rioja, i was nervous ordering the wine but it really change my perspective on youthful rioja's. i really want to go back, i just have to save up for it"

"Overall, our experience was enjoyable w/ a few bumps in the road. It took a while for anyone to get to us @ the front desk...I think they were busy w/ a bridal shower in the back room; one of the wait people didn't understand a request for jam for the yummy popovers offered before the meal & said it only came w/ the meal & my water glass was cracked around the base in a few places (but that was quickly replaced when we showed them). The food was good w/ an inventive menu, the decor Queen of Hearts & the signature dessert, a cheesecake lollipop tree was great fun."

"David Burke never lets you down. Consistently good food which is well presented. The only down size is the acoustics, one loud diner spoils it for all. The scallops benedict are to die for. Portions are generous so don't be tempted to eat all the delicious bread!"

"It was a packed Saturday night and we were shoehorned next to a large party, but honestly, our food was dazzling in its presentation and exquisitely prepared. the 5 course tasting menu was flawless and at 69 bucks an upscale 'value'. if it's still on the menu the lobster 'steak' is like no lobster we've ever had- it was intensely flavorful but also really tender- we fought over the last bite.

also, I had forgotten that I'd noted it was my wife's bday on the reservation- but the restaurant didn't! a special dessert was presented and the large party next to us all sang happy birthday!"

"A top-level restaurant with a whimsical menu that is somewhat marred by tables that are too close together. This is just not fitting for a chef who prepares his food with such obvious care. A few less tables would be the simple cure. Having said that, would go back but would insist on one of the corner seatings which are much more acceptable."

"The interior design of DBT is my favorite out of all NYC restaurants, thus far: original, whimsical, fun!
The prix-fixed is an amazing deal. The appetizers were the best. The entrees were still tasty, but not amazing. I recommend the crab cakes and tartare. It would have been an outstanding meal if we could have gotten the crab cakes as an entree. As for entrees, we ordered the calamari mac and cheese (mediocre), quail (delicious), and tuna (good). Unfortunately, they were out of our first two choices: short rib and dover sole (one of the specials). They gave us a free dessert as consolation. The sorbet was amazing! It was guava, raspberry, and passion fruit.
The service was fair because the waiter didn't explain the food components."

"We were there for brunch. Food presentation is great. Some dish were good - the salmon was perfectly cooked; others, not so good - the scramble eggs with lobster were overcooked. Overall, a bit pretentious. The service is not at the high end level of what the restaurant obviously aims to be with waiters mumbling and generally not being helpful. From our perspective, the brunch was overpriced compared with other dining experiences we had in New York. We will not go there again."

"I am very disappointed with my dining experience. The food, service, and ambiance simply do not justify the costs.

The food was slightly above average, but the food did not seperate itself from any other reputable restaurant in Manhattan.

The service was below average. We waited 30 minutes to be seated, with a reservation. Servers simply plopped dishes onto my table, gave descriptions of the dishes without care or concern, and ran off.

The ambiance was very noisy. Tables were too close to each other. The restaurant obviously tried to accommodate as many customers as they could. However, the impression was that the restaurant was more concerned with making money, rather than improving diner satisfaction.

"Was it the Valentine rush? The food was great as always. The tables were so close together that I could eat off my neighbor's plate. The service was polite but slow. The noise level made conversation difficult. I specifically requested the rear dining area to avoid the crowds at the bar and the mid restaurant traffic. Considering that I had to sign a contract for a table one month in advance, I expected better."

"We enjoyed our late dinner at David Burke Townhouse. The ambiance and decor are well done and service is friendly. I ordered the ribeye steak and was disappointed with the quality of the cut/. I know that ribeye's are marbled but this iece had a fatty texture throughout the steak. I was disappointed but I'm sure it could happen to any restaurant."

"This was not a pleasant experience. An empty restaurant when we arrived, the hostess sat us in the casaul dining room rather than the formal. It was cramped - there were only inches between us and the table next to us. To get out you had to move the entire table. The dishes were served in a rapid-fire process. Four different servers would ask us if we were finished and if so, they would immediately bring out the next dish. The bread served came out warm and quickly turned to stone. I couldn't even slice it open with a butter knife. The food was average for the prices charged. The portions were miniscule. My wife's dessert was terrible and when she asked how it was prepared the server could not answer - andhe didn't offer to find out"

"We have been here for brunch several times before and it was always excellent, but in our eyes it seems to have slipped a bit. The delicious popovers they used to serve are no more, and the bloody mary wasn't as good as it used to be either. Even my lobster scramble was not a tasty treat. It was way too oily with not much flavor. The only excellent part of the meal was the always consistent apple dessert. We would think twice before returning."

"I had a reservation at 2pm during RW week and we arrived at the restaurant at 2pm. But the Maitre'D seated a group of obnoxious 10 middle aged men, who had a reservation at 2:30pm before us. We had to wait to be seated half an hr later. That was strike 1. When they eventually seated us after I asked them about why he seated the 10 obnoxious men first when they had a reservation later than mine, he squeezed the 3 of us in a tiny table that was only meant to seat 2, instead of showing us to a table that's more spacious and could seat 4. The only redeeming quality is the food. We ordered the lollipop tree in lieu of 2 desserts but I thought it was just ok, aside from the novelty of it."

"We had a family gathering and we had the restaurant week menu. The appetizers and main entrees were good but the desserts were unmemorable. The restaurant was uncomfortably crowded and loud. The waitress who brought the signature lollipop cheesecake tree tipped it and spilled water all over the table and my husband's pants. She apologized but it would have been nice if they offered us a compted cup of coffee, but nothing."

"We were pleasantly surprised by this dining experience. The decor was elegant and the service attentive- but not too over the top. The tuna and salmon tartare parfait is worthy of its illustration in the menu. The lobster steak was excellent as was the seared tuna. Save room for the cheesecake lollipops- best presentation ever and worth the caloric intake. We would definitely eat here again."

"Food selection for restaurant week was good; enjoyed the salmon entree and the desserts. Place was very crowded and quite noisy; tables were placed extremely close together. Service was fair and somewhat inattentive--we had to request refills of water glasses twice before we could get attention of a waiter. I'm attributing the lack of service to the large number of "restaurant week" diners; they were still "packing in the lunch crowds" at 3:00 pm."

"Everything was excellent, probably my favorite RW experience (out of 6, including 3 Jean Georges restaurants). Only thing was it was a bit cramped and small towards the back of the restaurant, but very nice decor and still a better option than sitting towards the front of the restaurant, right by the bar.

Everything was good from the bread to the humorous waiter and excellent guidance on ordering entrees and wine to go with."

The hangar steak that my friend ordered was better -- but is this the most inventive thing they could come up with? "The food was good, but the chef spent more effort on the presentation than the taste. Most importantly, I expect to be satisfied and full at the end of my meal, and my date and I were both disappointed and still hungry. To privide important perspective, my girlfriend weighs 100 lbs. To provide more detail, one of our appetizers was twenty dollars, and it consisted of a single shrimp with a one-inch long piece of tuna. This isn't France."

"Wonderful food and a creative menu. Small and narrow rooms, gets tight quickly, with loud background conversations drowning out quiet enjoyment of the dining experience. But the food saves the day!!! Best for couples and small groups. Remained crowded (popular?) until well after 10:00 PM. Restaurant week pricing makes this a steal, with alternative choices offered at a supplemental price means you have plenty of choices at different price points and comfort levels."

"The appetizers of scallops topped with an egg and crab cakes topped with a prawn tipped us off that we were going on an amazing culinary trip. The food was spectacular, the mustard crusted tuna and braised short ribs making up the main course were both fall apart tender and the desserts at the end sealed the deal that everything they did was excellent. The lively decorations and everyday UES feel leave this place with the unique feel that you should be a regular here, even thought it's not really cheap enough to do. But boy that crab cake was good."

"Another fantastic meal at David Burke Townhouse! This place never lets diners down with their excellent service, quality of food and pace. We arrived before our reservations and had some cocktails at the bar (highly recommended). The bartender mixed some great cocktails and surprised us with a complementary appetizer! Nice. Our meal was well paced even with the house filling up quickly. Food was...again, amazing. It seems one of the constants on the menu is the pretzel-crusted crab cake which is a must, along with saving room for the cheesecake lollipops! Fans of short ribs also will rejoice at the excellent preparation that DB lavishes on the dish. Highly recommend going!!"

"David Burke's $24.07 lunch offers more choice than any others who offer a prix fixe lunch.Of course, the $6 supplements on the best choices rather defeats the special lunch price.

"My hat goes off to the interior designer. This place is so surprisingly stunning from the candy colored glass blown ballons hanging in the foyer to the diamond shaped checkered carpeted floor, it was truely a wonderland experience for adults. Moving on to the food. I think the appetizers was really the show stopper. I had the pretzel covered crab cake. Who knew such a small dish would be bursting with so many flavors, it was like a symphony in my mouth! For the main course i had the hanger speak with whipped potatoes. I got to say, it was my least favorite of all the dishes, in terms of creativity. For dessert I had the apple tart. it was warm, crisp and chewy, and everything an apple tart should be! I will definately be back again!"

"The festive atmosphere of David's Burke Townhouse was perfect for a girlfriends' birthday lunch. The food was elegantly prepared and delicious and the price was reasonable. The salmon was cooked perfectly and the cheesecake lollipop tree was a fun way to prolong the afternoon and end the celebration. One piece of advice though - DO NOT order coffee refills, we were charged $6 a cup (even though one of us had asked for a one inch refill!) for black coffee - absurd by any standard."

"I was not that impressed with their dinner prixe fixe selection. The lobster scramble 1st course was not very flavor full and the dish had no textural dimension. The toasted brioche bread that came with it was dry and bland. We were not given a choice with the 2nd course, it was an automatic soup course. I was expecting better flavor combinations from DB, although the presentation was lovely as usual. This meal was not as memorable as past. I will think twice about dining here again for special occasions."

"Reserved it for the restaurant week for a Saturday lunch. No limitations were shown and no indication when reserved that it wasn't going on weekends. Turned out that restaurant week was Mo-Fri only and that this had to be full priced brunch. The only thing was that certain lunch items were not on the menu. Overall food was decent (pan seared crusted tuna, cornflakes crusted salmon over sauted spinach and a really good, but way overpriced, french toast), but nothing left me wanting more or to come again. Even the "lollipop cheesecake" didn't seem nearly as opulent from what I remembered. Anyways, no major harm done, but there was a very little value in this meal."

"The food was much better than I was expected. But the service was rude include a phone call for confirmation. The decoration was nice, but there were too many tables. Everybody was too close each other, and I saw waiters were almost hitting each other several times while they were carrying dishes. Finally, it was SO noisy that I gave up having conversation with my husband. Impossible to have a business dinner or a special occation dinner due to the bad service and atmosphere."

"Will definitely go again and again and again! Food was amazing, staff was attentive and the peach martinis were perfect. My only area of improvement would be the proximity of the tables to each other. We were so close to the guests to our left and right we could've eaten from their plates. Removing 1-2 tables would definitely give a little elbow room. But, even that couldn't ruin our dining experience. Try the pretzel covered crab appetizer -- you won't be sorry!"

"I was honestly a little disappointed with David Burke Townhouse. I made a reservation for my birthday dinner and I left wishing I had made it elsewhere. The food was good but honestly not phenomenal. Some of the dishes were creative and presented very nicely, but my main course was pretty standard and not worth the price. The waiter was cold and dropped a rather pompous, rude and frankly inappropriate comment to me halfway through my dinner that left me with a really negative feeling about the whole experience. When you spend a decent amount of money on a dinner like that, you deserve to be treated well and not made to feel out of place."

"Surprisingly poor. The presentation is lovely but the food other than the appetizers was a disaster. The short ribs were dry and our waitress forgot the sauce that is supposed to go on top. When I pointed this out at the end of the meal when another customer's short ribs were sauced, she said, "too bad." The chicken was tasteless and served on frozen vegetables. All in all, it was a r=great disappointment. The kitchen should be ashamed of what they served that night. The table next to us sent the tuna back it was so tasteless. I had high expectations since I know his cookbook well and thought the experience would live up to its undeserved reputation. So much for great expectations."

"On a recent visit, our group stood inside the front door, while staff ran around and basically ignored us. Then, we were forced to check our coats- no coats allowed in the dining room. Many of us had valuable things in our pockets - keys, cameras and so this necessitated stopping and clearing them - all done in a small confined area-confusion entailed. The gentleman who seated us seemed to need if our party was complete and again, in in somewhat confrontational- first impressions! The main dining room seating is tight- we were too close to a wait staff station and every time they needed flatware, two of us had to shift a bit in our seats. I really wonder if the place meets fire codes- very little room to get in/out of seats."

"The service was not good. We had to ask for bread- it took a goodly amount of time to receive it. I had to ask for fresh pepper from 3 different people befor i finally received it. That is unheard of in a fine restaurant I should not have had to ask even once. I suspect this had to do with it being restaurant week but it clearly does not send a good message and i have told many people not to bother going. In addition the portions seemed quite small the men in our party were not satisfied. Having come off an extraordinary meal at Avra just a few days before this was quite a let down."

"I had a LOT of issues with the service at this restaurant. The hostess made our group of 5 stand and made no effort to seat us. She then DEMANDED that we check our coats. She wouldn't allow us to keep them! How strange is that?! Even better, all the waiters were on their blackberries rather than actually serving us. Our waiter was the worst. I asked for the wine special of the week, which I thought was 32 dollars/bottle. I made sure to ask the waiter again when he brought the bottle to our table whether this was the 32 dollar bottle and he said yes. Turns out it was a $32/GLASS of wine, but he made no effort to correct us and we paid almost $200 for the bottle. I will NOT be going back."

"The food is innovative and beautifully plated. The service could have been more attentive and tables are tightly packed into a room that is very loud when filled wioth opther diners. "We booked David Burke townhouse after the restaurant we originally booked was closed for the night. We were going to a good restaurant to celebrate my sister's 21st birthday while we were on holiday in New York - and we weren't disappointed! "I was dissapointed but will probably give them another try on a non-brunch, non holiday. We were 15 minutes early for our 2:30 reservation and we were not seated until after 3 -- and they seated a couple of walk ins before us. We had confirmed our reservations the day before, so they should have managed their floor better and seated us more promptly. In addition, the tables are SO crammed that everytime the waiter walked by he bumped my seat. I think that we should have been comped a drink or something for our wait. I also didn't realize that they would only be serving a brunch menu on New Year's Day (a Friday). I really didn't want breakfast at 3:00 in the afternoon but had no choice. They never refilled the coffee or water either."

"The meal started out beautifully, with an amuse buoche (mini appetizer) given to us before we ordered our meal. It was foie gras, which many people may not like, and I didn't eat, but was served very delicately. We were given a choice of the pre fixe menu or a la carte, of which we chose a little from both. I ordered Braised Ribs and they were absolutely amazing. The cream sauce had such a buttery flavor, I couldn't put my fork down! The service was impeccable, not a detail left out, and the whole experience was one to be remembered. It was expensive, but well worth it."

"The staff was very friendly and helpful. We enoyed the food - preparations were innovative and delicious. Our only reservations are that we were charged for water (tap water was not offered as an option) and regular coffee price ($18 for two) seemed high.

"Overall it was a good choice. We have had brunch there before and have had a nice experience. The food is good and dependable.Perhaps because it is so busy at that time the service is somewhat rushed. You get the feeling they need to turn the table not that they are taking care of you. "Our first time at David Burke's Townhouse was for Christmas Day dinner. We liked the sophisticated yet casual feel, and the food was mostly delicious. The amuse, a seafood mousse, and the grilled quail salad appetizer were particularly excellent. Unfortunately, maybe because of staffing problems on the holiday, service was poor: it was never clear who our waiter was, the maitre d' who took our wine order forgot to bring it, and then we had to request the amuse, which arrived *after* the appetizer. No one ever apologized for these oversights, and on top of it my skirt steak, which was ordinary and tougher than it should have been, arrived just barely warm enough to eat. All in all, a disappointment."
